In this video, I take a look at some watches that were long considered definitive points of value for enthusiasts. However, with the ever-growing hype surrounding watch enthusiasm, many of these former icons of value have ascended in price, making them a more challenging proposition than ever before. Which previously value-packed watches would you say have ascended in price in recent years?

It is ok to buy a watch that doesn't hold value as long as you really love it but just make sure you buy it at the right and reasonable price and don't look back. Enjoy the watch.

    Two lessons:
    1) Influencers and the internet community destroys a watch/brand by creating unnecessary hype. Almost all of the watches here are victims of their own hype.
    2) People don't want something if they can get it easily.

On Xmas day, 1985, I received this watch as a gift. Back then, it was called a Seiko Monster. For the first 20 years, it never gained or lost a second. For the last 17 years, it has run about 15 seconds slow. I recently changed the battery for only the sixth time. Now, all of a sudden, it's now running fast! It is quartz and made in Japan. They haven't made it in quartz for a long time. I was 18 when I got it and I'm 55 now. It will be 37 years old on Xmas day, 2022. I'll probably have it until I die. Fantastic timepiece.

Great high end quartz watches, costing thousands in the 80's, a few hundred bucks now. Seiko VFA's cost as much as a Corolla in the 70's, and finished almost as nice as a GS, few hundred bucks now. If you want something funky, the vintage Seiko Advan's and Vanac's. Yet no TH-camrs are talking about any of these watches.

In the US the watches were available for years close to $1,000 and were commonly labeled as the best do it all watches for $1,000 which I would not argue against. Now on a bracelet, they sell for over $1,500 dollars in the US. I would still say it is a good watch for the money but no longer the no-brainer that it might have been years ago. In the last 2 years, there's been a gold rush in luxury watch industry, not unlike what's going on in stock and real estate market, fueled by all the free money. In my mind, there's no question luxury watch market will be deflated in a big way now that tide is ebbing. The question is who, or if everyone, will be caught with pants down. To paraphrase Warren Buffet, it's only when water is low, you will see who's swimming naked. Also, when Rolex and all the wanna-be's tried to move up the food chain, who will step up to fill that big gaping hole left behind delivering quality at reasonable prices. There will be many for sure. Leading suspects are innovating Chinese brands and small upstarts. My two cents. Enjoy your channel a lot.

As always, solid analysis. That Sinn is gorgeous, but like their entire line, not to mention all the German makers, I could never justify/rationalize their prices. Other than the basic Junghans Max Bill, my 1 dress watches.
I hope your straight talk on Rolex doesn’t get you sent to the WWPP - Watch Witness Protection Program. 😀

Sinn needs to make the 556, Tegimented, and upgrade to the sw300! Especially for over $1,500!!! For just a couple hundred more you can get a 856, fully tegimented, with an SW300... It makes no sense anymore to ever buy a 556...

I'm really into having a few day date Rolexes and I personally don't need to overpay when it comes to a watch, which 3 years ago was triple less in price as it is now but on the other hand you see them increasing their value and you're willing to pull the trigger before they double the current market value. I know it's a dilemma and kinda controversial opinion but perhaps following your own insticst is the best choice!

I know..Sounds like I'm asking if you can look into the future and if you can GREAT, but the real reason is to see if any are worth grabbing for a few years down the road for something like a retirement account type investment..

Best bet on buying any lower end Seiko is at a Macys or other department store when they have a sale. 35% off a Prospect the last time I was looking at one.

    • @alexlilano1931
      @alexlilano1931 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I will say Macy's watches are the best watches in general. They usually mainly quartz or solar quartz. Quartz are by far better than mechanical in time keeping, toughness, and maintenance. Quartz are Way way better value. The Macy's quartz watches are better watches. They look the same as mechanical except for the sweeping hand too. High end watches are treated as more like art pieces jewelry. It matters more on the history, the way it looks, and who made the piece then objective utilities of the watches. I mean they still need to work as watches since we are spending a lot money to tell the time, but these watches cant hold a candle even the cheapest quartz watches when keeping time. Citizen quartz, G shocks, and smart watches are the best for utilities purposes. High end watches are really niche. Talk to people on the street. 49 out of 50 think you're crazy spending that much for a watch and that much for the servicing fees. I dont want to discourage anybody because watch collecting is an interesting hobby. A lot of history, engineering, and design. Objectively Macys watches are better watches as watches and sell more because of it.

To be honest, Stowa was charging way too less for a company based in Germany. I got my Stowa with in house hand made hands, 925 silver and very nicely decorated movement (better than in Omega Seamaster 300, for example) for only 1600 EUR. That price was not feaseable on the long term and I expected some changes.
Nonetheless, even with the raised prices, I think Stowa still offers value. I would still buy the second time even for the newer prices.

I'm new to the watch game, but an avid sneaker head, so maybe I can do a comparison of the 2 just to test my understanding? Basically anyone that is make X amount of money is buying these watches/sneakers at Retail/reasonable prices with the motive of driving these prices up, to buy more of them and drive them even higher, leading to a cycle where nothing is obtainable nowadays. When most of them don't even have the same appreciation for the piece and are just profit-driven first. Leaving those longing for them to have a higher demand and continue this vicious cycle. Sound familiar? Rolex=Jordan 1's lol

Having watched All is lost movie, I’ve bought Seiko SKX009 for 550 usd (new old stock). Despite the outdated movement the watch has such a charisma, such a balanced look, so much heritage, that I can’t take it out my wrist for already two weeks. Despite the fact that I have around 30 watches in my collection, some of which are by far more luxurious and expensive.
By the way, I love my Orient Kamasu, which is mentioned in the video as a great value for money, too. I bought the one with green dial for 200 usd. Still the enjoyment not always depends on how good was the bargain.

It is kinda funny with the SKX because I always thought I shouldn’t buy it nowadays because it isn’t good value anymore. I went back and forth, almost bought the Seiko 5 but then said to myself I love the design of the SKX and nothing can substitute it (there are so slight differences between all those other models, they are just not a SKX) so I bought it for 380€ new and unworn. I know it sounds ridiculous but it just so happened that I started collecting Automatics a tad bit too late. 2 years too late to be exact. But to come to an end, I still think the watch is worth 400 bucks. Yes no hacking and handwinding but the 200m WR plus some unbelievable accurate movement (mine runs 1-5s+- per day at most) and it is durable as hell. I even bought a watchwinder for 200 bucks just for it. I hate paying over retail but for the SKX it was totally worth it.

Exactly my point... better made. And better bracelets than anything from the Swatch group in a similar price range. You'd have to be touching Omega to get better bracelets, even considering the clasp. At the same price tissot and longines for example still use pin held bracelets and friction clasps.
