Assassin's Creed Mirage Is EXACTLY What I Feared... | Review

  • Going back to the roots of Assassin's Creed was a fantastic idea after much of the fanbase was fatigued due to the bloated content found in Odyssey or Valhalla. However, Ubisoft may have gone too close to the roots of the original Assassin's Creed instead of evolving upon it. The ideas are sound, great even, but it all falls apart when these pieces come together.

See one thing that they did away with in assassins creed that I’ve always viscerally felt the absence of is the puzzles and mysterious subject 16 files that you had to “decode” and find through out the world. I miss that kind of stuff. It feels like assassins creed has lacked that sort of mystery for such a long time and it really shows. I remember back with the failed Thief reboot, that during development there was a huge backlash from fans that there was going to be a leveling system and so they ended up removing it because "Garrett is already a master thief", fast-forward to today, every single triple A game has a skill point system, even Doom, it's just a part of the checklist for what to add to a modern big budget game.

    • @frenchfriedbagel7035

    • @mattallred
      @mattallred 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

Have you ever played a game that starts you off with everything unlocked? I've been playing Castlevania: SOTN lately and it starts you briefly with everything before taking it away. Games have always had progression and sequels have often poked fun at this or theorized why the character is reset. Whether its levelled skills or items/weapons which grant you new abilities, this isn't really anything new. I'm 99% certain that developers understand through millions of hours of playtesting that players get overwhelmed if given all abilities immediately. This is why most games always start you off by instructing you how to move or look around.
You can argue about how it should be paced, but NG+ ultimately seeks to solve this by letting you replay the full game with everything. Do you want lots of skills and abilities? Then the trade off is unlocking it over time and hopefully getting NG+. Triple A games are developed for audiences of millions, it's in their interest to make their product accessible. Granting abilities without explaining them isn't accessible. So we get tutorials and unlockable progression.
The system itself isn't the problem, it's the implementation. If it affords you gameplay options, totally unique mechanics with trade-offs, then it's fun. If it's simple incremental stat boosts, yeah, that sucks... but if it is giving you new gameplay abilities and allowing you to engage with the game world in a better way, then what's the problem? Would you really be happy to start the game as an unstoppable force? Even in the original DOOM you start with just a pistol.
It's a flimsy criticism. It's basic game design and it's up to the devs to make it work... to make it make sense... to make it fun.

I feel like there is an underline problem in gaming industry atm.
Some people who are very active on social media and some very active social influencers comes out as face of consumer. Just because they are very active on social media. Such people usually have strong opnions and want shorter games, action oriented, fast paced because they play a lot of games and newd time for social media.
Developers are taking such people feedback which I believe is ruining some franchises.
Just for example Valhalla is unanimously criticized on social media yet the game is best selling ubisoft game ever.
Developer need to understand social media users arent the majority of consumers. Games are played by people of all ages genders in 200 countries. Social media is usually a face of young, busy, western people.
When I saw mirage the first time I knew it will be critically praised but wont sell that well.
This is also why I feel MrMattyplays is a better face of consumer in the industry.
Most of youtubers have to review 10 games a month. There is no way they can be voice of consumers. Most will always say they like shorter games. Because they have to review 10 games or have to make videos have to do things etc etc.
That is also why starfield is rated lower than mirage.
General consumer like me only buy 20 30 games a generation of 7 years that is 84 months 🤔

Maybe AI will be the thing that helps the design and coding side be easier. I feel like it's difficult to innovate new gameplay, implement it bug free, test it, and make it fun within the deadlines they set. -Instead of just unlocking a skill and suddenly we can just use it, we have to actually LEARN it, either via challenges/missions

AC is such a conflicted series and you can see it in allcthe comments from multiple reviews. So many people begged for a return to form here and yet they still want more of the larger more fleshed out mechanics of the more recent titles. It feels like a lose lose situation

As someone who’s unapologetically a huge fan of Odyssey and Origins, I was curious if going back to the roots would appeal to me. Of the older games, Black Flag is my favorite. While Valhalla definitely suffered from some filler, grind, and less satisfying side quests, the new action/rpg focus sounds way more appealing to me than what Mirage is offering.

yep I have no interest in the classic AC playstyle. Give me a huge open world rpg, let me specialize and gear my character for melee, range, or assassination and let me explore and do side content if I want to. I want more like odyssey/valhalla or I have zero interest.

Honestly Matty, the things you’re describing as a criticism of the game actually sound really cool, especially the historical codexes. Valhalla was a debacle, most of all because they threw historical authenticity out the window (biker gang Netflix Vikings, really Ubisoft?). I’m just glad we’re getting an authentic, respectful depiction of Baghdad in its golden age.

I loved the pacing in Odyssey. Every few quests you were introduced to another layer. First you get your ship, then you meet your father, then you discover the secret cult, and finally you get to meet mythical creatures. This pacing was lacking in Valhalla. The main story was super heavy and more important than getting rid of the secret cult. I enjoyed Valhalla for it's incredible size and stories in each region.
I'm only 5 hours in Mirage and I do notice you only have two options: Whistle guards to assassinate them, or end up in a brawl. I do hope that after finishing Mirage, you'll have a better understanding of Basim and that the next full game will be 60 hours again.
Oh, I bought a month of Ubisoft+. I'm not intending to play this game again after finishing it.

I had my own thoughts though. For context, I've been an AC fan since AC2, and sure this new RPG series is different and not my favourite but fun nonetheless. When I played AC Mirage (it was a gift) I felt it was the stealth option I wanted Valhalla to have and with a few updates and tweaks, I feel that Valhalla can do it only if Ubisoft enjoyed making games.

Spot on… I was feeling like I doomed myself because this is exactly what I imagined when I heard it was returning to the roots. Not sure why people were so quick to forget how sick of the old AC format we were. Origins was such a breath of life into the series and it peaked with Odyssey. Day 1 with mirage I had already had to force myself to jump back in every time since just to justify the money spent. Such a disappointment.

It weirds me out how no reviewer seems to mention the fundamental issues I have with this game. Maybe it's just because barely anybody actually played more than 10 hours of Valhalla. Basim is an antagonist in that game and I literally had no desire to play as him, which you were also forced to do in Valhalla for dumb reasons. Also, nobody thinks it's lazy that they barely changed the UI from Valhalla? This "game" literally still feels like the DLC it was meant to be. Like, come on, you can't at least pick some new fonts or something?

I have every iteration of AC, from the first to Valhalla, and will obtain this one eventually. But not on day 1. One thing I think people forget about the AC franchise is that it had stagnated dramatically. That was the whole reason for the reboot of the series with Origins. Which, by the way, is my second or third fav from the franchise behind 2 and even with Brotherhood. To simply "go back to the roots" will likely be to repeat that stagnation. Time will tell, I guess. In any case, good vid

Well that’s Ubisofts fault. The story hasn’t gone anywhere in over a decade because they killed off their next big bad in a book. Every games modern day story has been reduced to “we want the shiny thing because we don’t want the other guy to have the shiny thing” and that’s it. There’s no greater purpose for that shiny thing it’s just gone forever now.

I haven't found Ubisoft games fun in a while, which is a shame since I used to love all their franchises. When they started to blend all the unique mechanics and adding them to every franchise the worlds became set dressing to the same gameplay loops over and over and over again.
I know they tried to break from that here, but frankly, too little too late. Zero interest in playing this one.
