I’m probably just a history nerd but one of the best parts of the rpg ac’s was the discovery mode. Loved that shit.

    • @lakingsgeek
      @lakingsgeek ปีที่แล้ว +35

Discovery mode is all I care about these days. I feel like AC games have always had a ton of potential but rarely rise above even a mediocre game. There are some decent entries in the series (AC2, BF, Origins) but even the best of them could get repetitive. The recreation of historical cities is amazing, the gameplay and secret society story lines not so much. Discovery mode gets rid of all the distractions and focuses exclusively on what is, in my opinion, the best part.

Honestly I hope to see more titles focus on a smaller map with increased density. Open world is cool and all but I feel like most of the time it results in 80% procedural generation, repeated outpost/cave/dungeon whatever design. And then like 20% underwhelming cities/towns. I would rather see a smaller map with more hand designed elements that makes the world feel more immersive and alive. I think that sometimes it's good to give the writers and designers a box to fill, rather than a blank canvas. Because often times a blank canvas results in a bunch of good ideas but most of them end up half finished and unpolished. Constraint breeds creativity.

    • @lakingsgeek
      @lakingsgeek ปีที่แล้ว +8

I think this is the right idea. I like the idea of a Hitman type game set in a historical city. There should be a number of high density areas and buildings where the main missions take place. They could still use an open world to make the place feel more alive and let you explore daily life in the ancient city.

@@ReikiMaulana Both Unity and Syndicate precisely suffer from those things too if you think about it for more than 5 seconds. Sure, smaller dense world... but what's the actual content like? It's the same generic icon-riddled map repetitive crap that Ubisoft are known for(like, how many useless collectibles were there in each game?). And the story and characters? Two great settings totally wasted with a very poor narrative all around.
I still love Unity, and had my fair share of enjoyment with Syndicate, because at the end of the day those games still provide the power fantasy / mindless entertainment I look for in an action franchise like Assassin's Creed... But to put it in a weird way, there are more "M;eh" and wrongs than "Nice" and rights with those games.

Been saying since Odyssey, please split the franchise. Have "Assassin's Creed" go back to the original style like Mirage is claiming to do.
And create a new franchise called "Odyssey" that does the open world RPG stuff with only minor references to the assassins existing. Odyssey 2...Kassandra in Rome. She lives 2400 years, afterall. Let's follow her RPG adventures throughout history.

I'm happy to see signs that studios are open to the idea of building games that are more tightly aimed at a specific experience instead of trying to be the one game that absolutely everyone should play. I'd truly love to have more options to buy games that take more of a Sekiro-approach in terms of being willing to limit player options in order to make the options that are there extremely good.

This is why I feel like Mgs have the best stealth system. The reason I say this is because the A.I are actually smart. If they see a little bit of you they send people to search the room you are in and even if you are hidden they search around the room and look in lockers and door’s just to find you. There is so many ways to deal with them from placing a playboy magazine on the brown for them to read and get distracted or just pointing a gun to their head so they will surrender. I don’t like stealth games because I’m a very impatient person especially the stealth games we get now. But Mgs is one of the only ones I play and I actually like because how smart the Ai are and how they actually feel like real people.

I don’t really care much about the branching decisions on how to eliminate a target. If my objective is to kill x templar, even if I do it differently than another player the result is that I killed x templar. So usually this only matters when a game wants to have multiple choices to give you multiple endings, but in this case Basim is alive and we know what happened on Valhalla, so I would ditch the multiple endings and choices when the story is already going that direction.

If this underperforms, it probably wouldn’t cost them a whole lot in comparison anyways. Which could also leave AC Red in some sort of limbo until the numbers are in on Mirage.

I would never tell anyone what to do with their money, but for me personally, I see this as a teaching/learning opportunity for Ubisoft.
Mirage (even though it’s essentially a slightly more traditional version of their last few RPG titles) is Ubisoft’s olive branch/Hail Mary for the original fanbase to prove that tradition really does sell. If Mirage tanks at launch, I don’t think they’ll ever return to tradition again… if it succeeds, I believe they’ll at the very least have an A and B team, one for the icky RPG games, and the other for traditional experiences.
I won’t be touching any extra cosmetics/content for Mirage, because I want to make a statement to Ubisoft that tradition shouldn’t rely on modern add-on’s and micro transactions (even though that statement won’t matter in the grand scheme of things). I don’t want to sound like a lap dog for Ubisoft (which I in no way am, since I’ve trashed their last two games since their respective releases)… but with that being said… ultimately, Ubisoft didn’t have to take a step towards tradition. Even though the step may be small, it’s still a step forward, and in good faith. I’ll be purchasing Mirage, but if I don’t see any changes (the og fans have been asking for) going forward with at least SOME of their AC titles, than I’m backing back out. That’s just me though.

Yeah, the reason that “nothing really feels like an action-adventure RPG” is because developers have created what I would call the “Melting Pot” genre of video games.
It’s where to take a bunch of individual, scattered pieces of all different types of games, and you just mash them together to create a blobby mass of stuff that you then stick into an open world setting.
It doesn’t work because they don’t fully commit to any one thing. They’re trying to create the mythical game-for-everybody formula by shoving all of the mechanics and ideas into one package, much like if you were to try and cook a meal that would appeal to everyone by throwing every single spice and seasoning in your rack into the same pan of meat.

I asked my buddy how long it took him to get back into the MAIN story missions after doing all the extra crap and he told me 50hrs. I just don't have another 20hrs in me to put towards grinding. I loved how they handled origins and the way they did missions. You didn't have to absolutely grind side content just to be able to do main quest missions, now if you wanted to do end game raids/boss battles then yeah you had to do the side content to max Bayek out. If you're not a big end game kind of person though, Origins gave us a straightforward campaign that was actually a lot of fun. Granted the parkour was subpar but just how much of Egypt you could explore, and all the hidden Easter eggs and lore were definitely worth it.

Whether it's worth it remains to be seen but if it is a huge hit hopefully it will convince Ubisoft to split the IP into separate entities rather than trying to pass Assassins Creed: Valhalla type games as a game that has any relation to Assassins Creed. Also a real shame Ubisoft took the decision to tack the Tom Clancy IP onto The Division because that basically means we'll never see anything remotely interesting there.

Hard disagree on the historical accuracy stuff you were saying about recent AC releases. By far the most consistent aspect of every AC game is the very clear very obvious dedication to historical accuracy. It’s the series’s entire identity, and they’ve stuck hard to it all this time. I get it if people don’t like Valhalla for one reason or another, I don’t like it either, but pretending the problems with Valhalla stem from the one aspect of Valhalla that is objectively cool and easy to appreciate - participating in the countless and infamous Viking raids on England, which is indeed historically accurate - is very weak.

I wouldn’t care about less variety as much if stealth was very challenging to pull off and AI was intuitive. Unity’s stealth and missions were fantastic. Not only do you have many options available but it was challenging to pull it all off without being see while also completing the extra objectives for 100% synchronization. The first mission I had to retry 3 times in order to steal the keys, kill the side dude, sneak into the cathedral without being seen, complete 2 hidden assassinations, and kill the guy in the confessional lol. It was frustrating and I cursed at my game several times but once I actually pulled it off, wow was it satisfying! I was really hoping Mirage would be a return to moments like this.

While I’m at it some cool aspects such as the sound of enemies falling could also trigger suspicion.

What i want from these big worlds is more depth. To be a sandbox where the world feels alive, to have a real economy, to have factions that pass the mantle of power around. So you as a equalizer type can be a boon or a wrench ion their gears. To have deep diplomacy and politics too. But from what i have seen that will happen when pigs fly.
Because this is like Valhalla but with a bigger focus on stealth i think it's kind of bad specially. Like they wanted you to get the feeling of old AC games but all within the systems of new AC games. Which is not that good. Like where are the double assassination moves? You know, the double hidden blade stuff.
I didn't mind it that much in a game like Valhalla where i prefer to focus on noisy brute combat. But if it's about stealth then traps, poison, berserk, double assassinations and long chain assassinations are a must. Valhalla wasn't that good in this regard.
Like to some extent you could take that road but the traps in general and booby traps are not that powerful, berserks as well too, specially when compared to going all in where you can deal more damage and is overall more fun. Also the environment combat is not that varied and commonly available either. So setting some trap domino chain to watch from afar unfold, kind of like in Hitman, is not really possible. How about stealth being also influenced by light and gear brightness too? Sound and actual vision, to make the sneaking more realistic and believable and of course more exciting.
So overall it doesn't seem that this "DLC" for Valhalla can be something of a deserving and good come back to the roots tribute. If it's about assassin's, "hassasins", then it should be about making rulers and breaking empires through manipulation, politics and sneaky murder. And Valhalla definitely lacks the proper systems and mechanics for that, i said it already, it needs to be an alive world, a living and breathing sandbox. And way more believable sneaking and murdering, way better "police", social hacking and witness systems.

"You have access to basic strikes and parries"
"They want you to sneak in, get to the vantage point and take out your target, just like in the old games"
This is literally not the older games, except AC1.
In every game past 1 you are an invincible god who can go 1 versus 10.
What you might be talking about is how the older games had a ton of "can't get detected or game over" missions.
The combat was literally never clunky, you were always allowed, enabled and encouraged to fight a bunch of people.

True but tbh i love this new direction. But as you said AC1 is an older game ;p

When Ubisoft did the very last update to AC Valhalla, and after your kill all of the targets, you get a couple of extra missions. I haven't even done have of those targets to get those extra missions.

I haven’t preordered a game in a long while. I wait til it releases and check to see if the game is worth spending money on immediately, wait, or not worth it to me at all. I got tired of getting burned by unfinished games. I didn’t even preorder Tears of the Kingdom, and I’m a major Zelda fan.

Am I the only one who finds it completely off putting and borderline stupid that Mr Assassin can just magically walk on suspended loose cloth and there's literally no reaction, either from the cloth having the weight of a whole ass person on it, or the people below who would very obviously notice someone's foot stepping on it directly above them?

Recently discovered you through JorRaptor and been going back and watching a lot of your content. Really like your take on games and your humor, and agree about not getting hyped about games until you see reviews... But I'm dumb and hyped for Mirage haha. I was hyped for Origins and was disappointed, was mid-mild for Odyssey which became my favorite AC game of all time, and was not looking forward to Valhalla and walked away mid-medium from that... So, what do I know haha. Who knows what I'll end up thinking about Mirage, but for now I'll continue to be hyped.

I don’t care if it’s stealth or agressive, I just want some kick-ass finishers; I’ve played enough Sifu and Absolver to be able to handle combat if I come across those bounty hunters. Hopefully get good enough, and it will feel like Assassins Creed 1 and 2, you were if not more unstoppable in those games than in Valhalla, granted much more calm and slick.

Assassin's Creed just hasn't had that same sense of style since about Unity, I'd say. It sounds vain, but I honestly feel llike the cooler, stylish animations were a big part of the series' identity back in the day (anyone remember Beautiful Lies?). Mirage seems to be a step in the right direction with some nice, albeit not amazing, combat animations, but running animations, parkour animations and even idle animations all just seem so...bland. Like you could slap them onto some random guy, as opposed to how Connor's animations and Ezio/Altair's seemed uniquely tailored to their playstyles and followed a specific theme.

@@eternalpain7762Facts bro. I loved playing as Connor and just effortlessly and smoothly carving up an entire platoon of redcoats. Makes me wanna replay the game just talking about it.

Several excellent historical cities in Valhalla fella (Paris, London and Dublin stand out), don't sacrifice accuracy for the sake of rhetoric. It'll be a mild remix of the formula, let's not kid ourselves.

Ubisoft had a non functioning game for a long time, I remember my friends and I all buying Uno on Xbox because we all thought it sounded like fun to just chill and play. Little did we know that it LITERALLY didn’t function, you couldn’t even play the game because as soon as you’d try to actually get past the start screen by pressing A it would just instantly crash. I reinstalled it about a year after I bought the game just to see it still never had been fixed, I get its Uno and doesn’t get much attention but pretty much anyone who paid for it dropped about $15 for a non functioning game developed by Ubisoft.

The game kinda looks like what i was expecting. I knew it couldnt be an old school AC game like i really want since its based off Valhalla but it looks fun. Baghdad looks gorgeous and if i can at least RP in my head as an assassin like the old days ill be happy

I think it’s just very telling that Ubisoft just had a multi-year stretch where they didn’t follow their namesake: ASSASSIN’S CREED - hardly any assassinations that were cool, no stealth, no creeds that were feuding, etc.
Stack that on abandoning most things that made them popular - dense worlds recreated from history, responsive parkour that funneled you to partake in it and not running in straight lines, telling an alternative history story that translated to current day, and had budding combat mechanics they tossed away for bare-bones RPG damage sponge enemies with bad AI - to begin with and you get a very divided fan base putting tons of pressure on this release.

This series just doesn't have an Identity anymore. It started off with as coherent dual narrative between Past and present about a conflict waged between two factions with differing ideologies on the human race and the principles of freedom. Now??? It's just a historical simulator about people with super-human abilities who take drugs and hallucinate full other worlds. You haven't been an assassin the last two games and the last 3 haven't even mentioned the word "Templar". The threads interweaving between each game are completely gone, and instead have been replaced with in game purchases for the benefit of Ubisoft and Ubisoft alone. Done with this franchise.
