This song is in Take a theif, almost word for word on the street laws in the end of the book.
it's based on what Guildmaster Vatean says to Skif during their fight
I think it's the other way around: this song is over a decade older than Take A Thief (lyrics being among the ones found at the end of Arrow's Fall), so Lackey probably wrote this as a sort of sketch for Skif's backstory for herself, sort of a bit of idea of the character's mindset, and then worked it into the dialogue of Take A Thief when she wrote it

The Law of the Herald is love? LIE! One among a host they are taught. The Law of the herald is Sacrifice. They are born but to die , only to be reborn.
Now that's a special kind of hell all on its own. I know of no daemon that does not envy, the one who came up with such a curse.
Oh well! Humans can inhabit even hell it seems,, and be content to do so , never knowing they need not suffer.
Except that they're not forced into doing any of it. They aren't forced to be Heralds, and they aren't forced into re-birth. They CHOOSE to do it.

A psychic child, is bonded to a more powerful herald ,in horse form. An emotional bond , that transcends everything they will ever feel.
Taken away from family and friends , wards of the state from then on, taught selectively, from Valdemars' point of view.
By the time they are adult, they are so indoctrinated, any notion of choice is a bad joke.
We set the police, against cults who behave like that.
