  • Today we're comparing the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 OS HSM lens and the Canon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 STM lens! The kit lens has an awesome focal range, but is lacking in a lot of ways. Hopefully this video can help you decide if the 17-50 is a suitable upgrade for the Canon kit lens!

    For landscape the basic kit lens is perfectly fine. Because you’ll need to close your f stop. That’s why comparing the two in a landscape scenario is a bit pointless. The main difference comes when you compare them under low light. In low light scenario the 17-50 will provide double the light at the widest focal length and 4x times the light when zoomed at 50mm, leaving the basic kit lens in the dust.

    • @harrison00xXx
      @harrison00xXx ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, in fact the "kit" lens with F3.5-5.6 and the "better kit lenses" with constant 2.8 are more or less uncomparable.
      I was a long time EOS 400D user with a 18-55 non IS kit lens and later i didnt even had for years a regular focal length except a 50mm 1.4 prime, first on APS-C, later on full frame.
      Since i got back to APS-C again (for affordable video/hybrid cameras, the EOS R7) i just looked for a good replacement/full frame comparable stuff.
      The Canon EF-S 17-55 2.8 was pretty perfect on APS-C to replace a 24-105 lens on full frame with even the same bokeh/DOF.
      With the change from FF to APS-C and F4 to 2.8 lenses (but SAME High ISO performance of the bodies!) i got even better low light performance than on full frame.
      In fact with modern cameras and IBIS considered, there is not much way around a Canon 17-55 2.8 IS USM.... best stabilizer (and works with IBIS!!!!), best IQ out of all 17-50/17-55s. In fact the Canon version is nearly (or is...) "L-Lens" quality when it comes to optics with 2 or 3 apochromatic optics, but only "EF-S" build quality standards sadly.

    I bought the Canon 77D with kit lens for $655 in total off of B&H and I love the camera but the aperture of the kit lens just makes it all feel not worth it. This lens is definitely something I have been looking at for quite some time and this really helped give me confidence about the motor noise and how it wont affect to much when shooting video. Thanks man!

    Just want to say thank you again, Josh. The camera I purchased was 80D, because I really liked your videos. The first lens I bought was Sigma 17-55, as you suggested it, and it got me into photography so much! Love it. And just today I received EF-S 55-250mm lens, as you suggested in one of the earlier videos, and I LOVE IT!

    Just an FYI, the reason the pictures look so bad at 7:49 is because the images are cropped in like 1000%. Without cropping in, it's pretty hard to showcase any difference in a 1080p video 😅

Pair it with my sony a6500 and the LA-EA5 adapter that just came out for native AF, and this thing rules. Super, super sharp at all focal ranges and fixed 2.8 aperture. My only problem was I had to upgrade my ND filters since I didn't have one big enough (77mm)

    If budget is a concern I'd go for the 18-55 and add a prime like a 50 mm 1.8. You're going to enjoy those two a lot more than the differences between the 18-55 and the 17-50. That said, if you want an all-rounder the 17-50 sounds like a good deal. If you don't need stabilisation, you could look at used analog EOS lenses. They're amazing value and often excellent in optical quality. I have a 35-105 mm that's incredibly sharp and has quick autofocus.

      That's a tough call. It totally depends what you're shooting. If you're shooting video handheld with no form of stabilization, I think the 17-50 definitely makes sense. If you shoot video on a tripod, the f/1.8 aperture might be more valuable than the stabilization. Both have their pros and cons, it really just depends what you shoot!

    First of all: I would avoid the 3rd party lenses nowadays, especially the ones with stabilizer. The Canon 17-55 2.8 is already very affordable 2nd hand
    I had also for long a similar setup:
    18-55 kit lens (non IS!)
    EF 50 1.4 USM
    EF 75-300 IS USM
    But i was super annoyed by the 75-300 (slow and problematic AF, very bad IQ, zoom creeping), the 50mm 1.4 i loved for nearly 10 years until it got replaced by a RF 50 1.8 (pretty huge difference in look and colors! RF is clinical/sharp, the 30 year old EF 1.4 somewhat classical and heavy CA/noticable less sharp etc)
    I had for a while full frame too with the EOS RP (+RF 50 1.8, dream combo just 650g!) but as i got back to APS-C with the EOS R7 i just tried the EF-S 17-55 2.8, WOW! good stabilizer, its definately supported a bit with IBIS aswell despite being "adapted" (unlike canons official statement which is the reason many people refuse to buy the R7) and the image quality is superb. By watching some other comparisons with Sigma and Tamrons aswell the mighty 18-35 1.8 Sigma... it was clear, the Canon 17-55 is the best option.... in the middle ground of price and the best image quality out of all comparable zooms (except the Sigma 18-35 1.8 which is just "perfect" in IQ)
    Especially the best stabilizer out of all 2.8 APS-C zooms was the reason to aim towards the Canon version and all its drawbacks (build quality, dust pump, zoom creeping, unpleasent sticky MF ring,...)

    i have another question which one is better to have 50mm 1.8 or the 50mm 1.4 or do i buy the both of them or i only need one help me out cause they're cheap. my next door neighbor have a camera bag with 10 lens in it and he said he spend over 25,000 dollars and i was holding my head i think i only need 4 lens and call it a day. i can buy an expensive lens and don't know how to use it then i'm screwed and i don't waste money like that. here's what people are telling me they said i need a 24-70 f2.8 17-50 f2.8 and 50mm 1.8 and 18-35 f1.8 cause i already have a zoom lens. remember now my camera doesn't have video so i will get another camera that can shoot video and i will have lenses already.

    Hey I have a question, I already have 18-55mm kit lens, 55-250mm, and 50mm prime lens, I am looking for upgrading my gear. Shall I go for Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 or some wide angle lens like Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8. Please suggest me. I am basically interested in travel and nighttime photography. Great video btw.

    • @JoshWiniarski
      @JoshWiniarski  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It totally depends! The 17-50 is essentially just an upgraded kit lens (you probably won't even notice the difference in focal range). Do you feel like you want a wider focal range? For astro/nighttime photography, I really like the 17-50, but it's not quite as wide as something like a Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 which I primarily use for astro photos. I'd say the Tokina would give you more versatility (essentially 11mm to 250mm), but it just depends on how much you'd use it. When I'm hiking/backpacking I pretty much only bring the 17-50 because it's just such a good focal range for capturing people, places, objects, etc. and almost never feel like I need wider. This sort of turned into a long answer haha but the 17-50 is soooo much nicer than the kit lens I'd say it's a better investment unless you really wanna shoot wide a lot. Hope this helps!

      "Tack sharp" is a little bit relative. This isn't the sharpest lens ever made, but compared to entry-level lenses it's sharp. If you just want a sharp lens stick with prime lenses. If you want a sharp zoom lens though this is a good buy.

    • @JoshWiniarski
      @JoshWiniarski  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Never used it. As a general rule though, the greater the zoom range of the lens, the lower the overall quality both in terms of sharpness, depth, and amount of light let in. If you're looking for 1 lens to do everything, it might be perfect for you, however I personally wouldn't use it since a fast aperture is something that's super important to me.

    I have the 18-55 mm, and im starting to look for a replacement and i really love this sigma 17-50 (im a nikon user). I already own a 50 mm 1.8. If I buy this sigma, the next lens that would be amazing to have on the future (to complete like a trio of lenses) is a telephoto lens, the thing is that the 70-200 2.8 or f4 is like $1300 from tamron, and is way too much for me, which not-garbage-but-cheap telephoto lens would you recommend? Thanks!!

    • @JoshWiniarski
      @JoshWiniarski  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So admittedly, I don't know a ton about Nikon lenses, but I'd look for something with a reasonably fast aperture and image stabilization if possible. For Canon users, I always recommend the 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS because it's pretty sharp and the IS helps a lot if the sun starts setting or if it's a cloudy day and the subject isn't moving too much. With telephoto lenses you're typically going to need a faster shutterspeed since every little shake gets pronounced, so if you can find a cheaper lens with IS it's definitely worth considering. Hope this helps!
