This gentleman needs his own television show. The clarity about how he explains the most complex things is almost an art form. Let me go and get my kit lens and leave some of these expensive lens home🤣😎. Lol

He is probably not that much wrong in some cases.
I had for years a 18-55mm kit lens (the time before IS or STM was in them!), all the other lenses i had were prime macros, a telezoom and so... not really a lens which could replace the "standard" focal range of the kit. So despite having a few more expensive lenses, i often used only the kit lens because the other ones had more or less special cases i didnt need at this events.
But looking behind - i guess its still (next to a fast, cheap 50mm prime) somehow needed at the point you know you like photography that you search as fast as possible for a kit lens replacement. Doesnt have to be any 24-70 L or so, but at least something with better IS and proper USM, bigger aperture (with probably more blades) and if possible better imaging quality than the kit.
I personally still am looking (since nearly 10 years, lol) for a proper "universal" lens with a useful variety anywhere between 15-80mm and GOOD imaging quality, upgraded already twice (first to a 28-105 USM, then a 28-135 IS USM) but these lenses are barely better than the kit lens (when it comes to image quality, anything else is "superior" like superfast AF, more zoom, bigger aperture, etc)

I watched a video by a very famous photographer recently where he was asked about portraiture for beginner photographers, and he used a 100mm 1.8 lens in his explanation.
The only thing I thought throughout the video was: what new photographer is going to own that lens right off the bat?
Your video is much more sensible, and it deserves more views.

During this quarantine is good to hear your voice. On top, a realistic approach to investing is new lens. First walk, then run. I notice that Canon is your choice, I've just bought a new Sony A7III, perfect pictures but lack of that creativity touch Canon brings in my opinion.

The kit lenses can be great. I've actually used them to successfully photograph an entire wedding. I can't wait till I have enough to purchase a 24-70 F2.8 for better quality what I was able to do with the kit lens was still great. No I am not a pro and likely never will take that step but still I am enthused enough to have shoot over 100,000 photos over 14 years.

ALL lenses loose sharpness below f/8 or f/11. Diffraction. BTW, you could have used f/5.6 or f/8 for the wide field city shots for ultimate sharpness, as depth of field would have easily compensated for any out of focus blur, and the higher shutter speed would have made for a sharper picture.

Man, I wish I watched this video when I was first starting out... he dropped a lot of knowledge, in an easy to understand way. As photographers, we can fall into the trap of wanting 'better' gear all the time. Invest in learning before splashing the cash... but when it comes time to break away from the kit lens, I'd highly recommend (depending on what you shoot) to invest into a 24-70mm - and ideally a continuous aperture lens. I'd only advise people to pick up a prime once they know what their favourite focal length is, and perhaps why they like to shoot with it.

A Rolleiflex is a cracker of a camera. I had a Yashica 635 TLR which had an adaptor to allow 35mm film to be used as well as the 6X6. I even tried using a polarising filter on it which is a bit complicated 😂. Then there’s the first time I tried to take a photo of a moving subject and seeing it disappear 😂😂. I love their whisper quiet leaf shutters and the shutter buttons so light and easy to press that camera shake is reduced. They draw a fair bit of attention too.

Today's kit lenses equal many premium lenses of yesterday in image quality, IMO, the primary lacking of most kit lenses is a relatively fast aperture. However, when shot at f/8 of so (especially tripod mounted) and in under good lighting - the results with these inexpensive lenses are excellent...
Do I own one - No! But. I did own the Sony 28-70mm f/4-5.6 OSS lens and the image quality at f/8 was satisfactory.
OTOH - it could not hold a candle to the all around results of my Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 lens in quality and all-around versatility...

Most kit lenses aren't all that bad to be honest. Now there are some that have gotten a bad rap in the industry (like Sony's 16-50 PZ kit lens and a few others from other brands) but then there are the really good ones like those from Fuji (like the 18-55 f/2.8-4) which is actually quite good considering it is considered a kit lens as it is sold with some of their camera bodies). I think the term kit lens often times gets equated to bad image quality and that's not always true. For example, my Nikon Z 24-70 f/4 is about as sharp as the newest 24-70 f/2.8E lens for DSLRs from Nikon, except for that it's missing that extra stop of light, but as far as sharpness, it's quite sharp and I've used it for things like landscapes and portraits in some case with very good results (good enough, in fact, that I've talked myself out of needing the 2.8 version). But like I said, there are some kit lenses that are truly not that great (or that sharp) but on the other hand, there are some that are excellent performers for general use.

Great advice and tutorial. Most people skip their kit lens without knowing what its capabilities are. I take wonderful shots with my 15-45mm on my M6.

Great advice. I've always been amazed by the quality out of some kit lenses. I've gotten some really great long exposure shots at night with my canon 18-135mm. They were cityscapes

I use a Sony a5100 as a gimbal cam. The 16-50mm kit lens is one of my most important video shooting tools. People poo-poo the kit lens because it's essentially a freebie. If it fulfills a purpose in your workflow, it can be an important asset. Your topic is on point.

There is nothing wrong with a kit lens.
.....before upgrading to a more expensive lens ......
    Never UPGRADING, but buying:
    1. a set of Close Up lenses
    to reach 1 : 1 magnification
    2. a wide angle lens
    at least 25 % shorter
    than your kitlens 18 - 55 mm
    might be a manual lens
saves $$$ + gives more fun
    3. a tele lens
    at least 50% longer
than your kitlens 18 -55 mm
    choose a auto focus
    no Fujifilm
    TAMRON !
    4. a longer auto focus telezoom
    no Fujinon
    TAMRON !
    5. a lens adapter to mount old analog
    lenses on your digital camera.
    6. an old macro bellows + mount adapter
    + old enarger lens
+ a set of old spectacle lenses
    and construct your own telelens
    7. a pola filter
    8. a graded ND filter
    9. a library of old books on photography
    10. a visit to a photo expo

Nobody really said ever that a kit lens is really bad, its just... like a VW Golf with the weakest engine setup, it drives, but better dont think about HOW it drives if you need performance.
And when we talk about performance when it comes to lenses its pretty obvious.... smaller F-Stop number and better optical quality cost a lot, especially both in combination.
And here comes in the situations we luckily didnt see in this video - low light situations, where the 18-55mm kit lens shows how bad it is - Just think about that: My iPhone 12 Mini shoots better photos in low light than a beginner class Canon DSLR with the kit lens!
Something like a 50mm 1.4 or 1.8 prime lens will make a cheaper DSLR as useful in low light as good smartphone camera, but still, im not even very impressed about the EOS RPs low light performance somehow, but at least A LOT BETTER than my Eos 550D which is finally my 2nd camera mostly with a telezoom and as astro camera.
