UPDATE: I was playing on the Steam version for this review. I just bought the Xbox One version this morning, and the double flips are much, much, MUCH easier. I beat that challenge in two tries. In fact, every flip trick is faster. It may be a controller issue? I'm not sure.
You ever get the tre double flip? Just got to pop with both sticks & hold the right stick in position until literally right about hitting the ground. Edit: you might have to hold the left & not the right I can't remember. One does a double tre, the other does a 540 tre.
A tip for manuals too, you can use the other stick to modify the angle of your manual, and it makes landing in Manny much easier. So for a regular manual, hold down all the way on the left stick and down center on the right stick as you land
Tip for double flips. In XL, if you want to flip fast, you have to sacrifice pop. So with you nollie double. You front foot i noticed you never actually had the most pop. Try pop the stick from top to the bottom(go up and then pop by bringing it right down). For the flip, dont pop at all just bring it from right to left as you pop, then hold and let go to catch 😍 = fast flips. Good luck, definetly share the clips. ❤ u radrat 😍😍
Nobody released a worthwhile skating game this whole console generation, then all of a sudden everyone releases one around the same time when its already about to end.
But before that there was nothing for a long time thats what I'm saying. All of these are coming out close to each other now that its been like 6 years since a worthwhile skating game.
@@Rav_Ram because of greed.. EA is only making the skate 4 game because they seen the hype that got built up from these 2 skate games, and they wanted in on the cash. They have a way bigger development team too, so itll be easy for them to design a "better game quicker" I quoted it because it's not necessarily going to be better, but I think the concept was understood.. they took a hit on skate 3, which is why they didnt want to make skate 4.. but now that the demand has risen, they want to cash in on it.
that is sooo true, i feel now that varial is impossible like seriously.... i can sometimes get 540 flip but cant varial anymore, i just made comeback and will have tre's unlocked next time i go skate it is just the backfoot that must be on the board not 5 cm of the board hahaha. but varial nope did my first 5 years ago but then i stopped doing them just like heelflips but can get the doubble heel flip just by accident well thats good.
I love the game but I Skate goofy and there’s literally no point of me doing the challenges because they’re only in regular, what is the point of learning all those tricks in regular if I skate goofy? Wish they’d fix this in the future
@Nekaneka15 thanks! :)) And yeah I was thinking the same thing as they add and update more stuff it's going to get waaay better I've been playing for a few hours now and have started to learn how to move more and it's becoming funner :)
Best part about this game for me is that I live and skate in LA so I’ve been replicating tricks I did in reality and recording it with the same angle it’s like I opened my third eye lmaoo
so when i first started playing i also complained about the massive ollies in this game, especially when popping out of grinds and mannies. but one of this game's massive strengths is the modding community. there's a mod called XXL mod which includes in it an old mod called StatsMenu, which allows you to have granular control over stuff like that. you can increase the gravity, decrease manny and grind pop out individually, flip speed, scoop speed, and several other things. on top of this, the mod allows you to do new stuff like forward flips and one foot grabs, and even adds a third ollie height called baby pop which allows you to pop extremely low, which is nice for things like hopping up small curbs without jumping like 5 feet in the air. it's great for getting very realistic footy. you can also save your stats so you can quickly swap between presets you've created. what i do is have one preset that i use for more realistic skating, and then tweak it if it will help me make a particular trick i'm trying look believable.
@@eyelove4206 true, but the mod makes it much easier. It also allows you to do more vertical shuvs, hard flips, and tre flips. I don't even use it for literal forward flips.
Grant Park is surprisingly accurate! They got the bridge going to the metra station and the skyline is pretty close to the real thing. The only thing that was missing was the statues without arms right behind where the player starts the level hahaha
considering all the time i've gotten sucked into while trying to perfect my 3 trick lines on a game i spent 20 bucks on for early access, yes this game was very worth the investment. this is the skateboarder's skating game, the others are good but are more for the general market
Literally just bought the game today on Steam, and I love it, I love how one of the biggest parts of the game is finding a cool spot, lining yourself up and seeing what you can come up with, just like real life skating. Hope they release some more new maps soon, but really glad that the School and LA levels are so large, there's tonnes of things to do there.
My favorite thing about skater xl is it makes me feel like I do when I'm skating. There are times when it will take 30 mins to get a trick, and not because it's a hard game, but because the board is acting like it does irl.
FYI the challenges are only in regular stance, so it really excludes half of the audience, you probably didn't notice as you skate regular, that makes the game really bare for all goofy skaters
"the game did not have that many glitches" ...we must be playing 2 different versions cause I ran into a lot of glitches lol. But it's definitely fun and I mainly bought the game to support the devs cause they seem like they actually care about the game and I'm pretty sure it'll be even better as more updates come out
Bxch4r that’s because your still turning with thumb sticks. As soon as u put upward/downward input on the wrong stick you’ll pop a trick. Not a glitch just how the mechanics work
I have the PS4 version and I had my fair share of glitches. Examples: -When I respawn back to the starting point, my skater's back foot is stuck to the middle of the board and it won't unstick until I pop a nollie -When I do big gaps, the skater would land the trick but the half of the board is stuck in the ground until he eventually bails -When I try to do challenges, the frame rate drops, hard, and the game lags -Sometimes when I try to do small turns with the left joystick, even with just barely nudging it, the skater pops a nollie -At the mega ramp when rolling straight down the ramp, my skater would start grinding even though there is no rail or edges
@@Hunne2303 here's the glitches I've experienced while I'm playing, the screen goes black for a few seconds (but the game continues to play) sometimes my skater's legs won't push wheels go through the ground game freezes and I have to restart weird graphical glitches where the surroundings flashes white sometimes the wrong trick name is shown, if I do a shuvit ...it'll just say "Ollie" or if I do a Tre Flip, it'll say "kickflip"
@@ruffles886 definitely! I think people are hyped for it because there's been such a drought of skateboarding games, particularly on the more realistic side. Look at the animation for switching to nollie, you just teleport to the other side of the board! No actual foot movement. THPS had better animations 15 years ago. It's more like a demo than a game. But I suppose if people enjoy it, I'm not going to be a snob and condemn them. It's just not for me.
@@Monkeypole yeah same I've been bashing this game alot particularly in rad rats comment section and I feel bad because people seem to like it. But it just makes me a bit upset to see people excited about a game that has worse physics then skate-it on the Wii which came out over 10 years ago. We have to expect more, not less. And when I look at this game, I see way less then i want to see. Especially for all the hype it's getting.
This review is SUPER helpful! I just bought this game on a amazon discount and it has not come yet. I was scared when I saw the low ign review (it was done by luke riely who is usually more credible than igns reputation) it concerned me. After watching this I can tell this game is appealing to skaters a lot more than gamers so I am excited to try it!
That’s really weird. I went to the store on what was supposed to be release day and they didn’t have it and all the other stores in the internet didn’t have it either. Did they all just have one copy and already sold it or were all copies lost? Was it delayed but still available on the PSN?
I absolutely love this game and have certainly already gotten my money's worth, and yet that doesn't blind me to the fact that they really could've and probably should've spent a few more months in early access. The UI in particular is just kind of ridiculous and amateurish for a forty dollar game in the year 2020.
I love this game, but the gameplay as it is feels like an easy/learning mode. I really want a "hardcore" mode for it: lower pop, quicker flips and spins, manual catch.
It’s a good game as it is right now on pc (with mods), can’t ask for too much since its very recent and this isn't a huge company to my knowledge. no story or multiplayer officially but I could spend hours hitting lines and spots while filming. such a great game to just relax with while listening to music and if you can mod it then it becomes even better obviously. for console its lacking ofc. if you dont mind having less features then its a cop, if you dont like that then its best to wait a little longer.
@paula that's my favorite part about Skater XL fanboys. They all think it's acceptable to pay $40 for a beta and then have to wait for PC features. I was told this so many times on reddit lol
@@akiratoriyameme3352 i play on pc so i have access to mods, it doesn't matter for me tbh but for everyone else i get it. games refreshing for what it is and i $40 is only $40 better than $60 :/ im assuming a lot of people wanting it released and they just did it without multiplayer to get it out. its gonna get implemented eventually so you dont have to buy it right now until you feel like it anyway.
Even with the glitchiness and shortcomings, I’m actually hooked. The difficulty makes it so satisfying when you finally nail a trick or a line you’ve been trying. And the replay editor has personally sold me lol. You can get the most amazing clips, it’s crazy. Can’t wait to see what they continue to do with the game going forward. 🙌🏻
I picked this up on the whim (I had been playing Session as well) and I've been very much enjoying it; it honestly reminds of playing the first Skate and just attempting to do lines and constantly attempt to pull off the best one possible. While I do think the game is somewhat limited (and the fact that the challenges can only be done in regular stance is annoying) and that people who are looking for Skate 4 may be disappointed, I do believe that anyone who just wants to skate around a level and do lines will more than likely have a good time with it
This game needed to be in early access for more time. I have it for PC and love it with all the mods and stuff but id be pissed if I bought this on console...
To be fair if you had a console you'd have Tony Hawk and no other option, even if its a bit of a rip off at least you get a skating game that'll be updated lol
None skater here: XL is a little rough around the edges but I’m confident the devs will support the game. I think it will really take off. XL makes me want to learn to Skateboard 🛹
Def worth it. (For the double nollie heel and double flip challenge, I feel like when you hold both sticks up to get that extra height it makes the rotation on some tricks slower. So for double flips or heels I usually do normal Ollie/nollie instead of the high pop. I do hope they make the difference between how you do 360 and 180 flip tricks more clear because it’s very inconsistent imo.)
Bruh mine doesn’t even have the option for challenges. And half the settings aren’t there along with the maps not being fully finished and some gear is missing.
Great video. Try letting the kicking foots analog stick go to the center briefly before flicking for the double flips. Instead of going from the crouch position directly to the kickflip position. Also for the double tre flips. Just flip it like a varial flip.
Yeah I usually let both sticks go to neutral (back to center), then immediately "flick" straight to the left or right depending on if you are reg. or goofy. Doing this I didn't have much problem with this challenge, doing it within 3 tries or so.
I finished my 2 hours on Session and I can’t decide if I should get the full. I really like the control scheme, it’s just annoying falling over everything you touch by accident
to do double flips and flick hard you have to do this. 1. Pop the board. with one or both sticks 2. let go of the stick that you kick with. 3 flick it to the left or right fast. do NOT pop the board and then kick the board in one motion. you have to let go of the kicking stick and then flick it fast. this is how you do double flips , triple flips or fast flips. like you would do in real life. if you wanna do a high fast good looking kickflip, kicking the board the second after you pop is not the way to go. you have to do it ollie. so drag your foot up the board, like you would do when doing a ollie. when your kicking foot is almost at the top of the board then you kick out. ollie kickflip. not just a kickflip that gets no air at all.
Hey man, I’ve been with ya for a while. I am SO FUCKIN GLAD YOU STUCK AROUND! You are starting to receive some respect in the bigger skate scene. I’ve heard a few big boys say some good things mate! Just wanted to say thanks man! This is a niche aspect of a niche space in life. Not too easy! But you are the man!
The game is good but has many flaws. At times the tricks feel amazing and others you see how fake the game can be. I've had plenty of times where I land in primo but my board teleports to where i land on it. Just one of many flaws I've found
I’ve never got as bored as quickly as I have with this “game”. I say game with quote marks as, to me, this is not a game. I get that it’s going for more of a simulation vibe than arcadey fun, but some challenges would be nice (not just do this trick here, now do this trick here, now do this trick here, etc). This is more of an experience than a full game. It doesn’t look finished either. Shit.
@@Twuntt when was the last time you saw mods for a ps4 other than skyrim? This game is destined to fail on console because it's the community that's already making the game better not the developers. This game is straight ASS. Yea it can be fun but how long can someone actually enjoy doing the same thing over and over and over with no real objective other than do some tricks in a game that looks like shit
Dude that footage you recorded and edited is so good, i love the realistic hard tricks you picked to do and it had good style, and filming style. props
Nice! Those were the cleanest lines I’ve seen on this game so far. Thank you for explaining that a skateboarding game only needs to let you do one thing: SKATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think I have to get this today.
Why do none of the reviews for this game talk about how bare bones the customization options are? There are practically no gameplay options. You just have to deal with it. Session has an insane level of depth to deciding how you want to control your skater.
I bought this day one, mainly to show my support to the developers. I appreciate that they made this game. I hope they keep pushing updates, new tricks, new maps & new content.
Nah 40$ aren't worth it at at all, There are no goals or Story mode you get bored easily. It would be good it were 20$. But 40$ no way I wish i could take my money back:/ I bought on console by the way.
Honestly if there were a story mode I probably wouldn't even touch it anyway. The way I see it, this game is just a virtual version of skating in real life. You don't really have a goal outside of the trick you're trying to land, and there certainly isn't any story mode. Just depends on what you value in a game, and what you were looking to get out of this one I suppose.
The keyframe thing confused me so much for the first couple days... and I'm a video editor in real life. The Keyframe off/on thing is so confusing. Other than that, I really dig the game!. My only other wish is that there was a way to get more community maps. Maybe in the future?
@Alexander Harris what do you do w life every single day. Kind of the same thing, so do you go off yourself cuz you hear a song you heard earlier. No!!!! Funny how the ones hating are still watching other ppls vids on it. Hmmmmmmm. Your stupid tony hawk game will be out soon, then it can be more realistic to you while collecting the letters for skate 😄😄😄 can it get lamer then that?!?! Cant imagine you just dealing w life if you cant even handle hearing a song you heard 10 mins ago. Sounds like you need therapy
@Alexander Harris do tricks? this isnt a game for normies that want to get to the ISS in a mini ramp, this is a sim, you do tricks and make them look legit and if u want u film them. is it rly that hard to understand?
Great great review, I hope that the devs see this and work on the points you mentioned. One thing I noticed is that the skater often doesnt really touch the board when catching the trick, which looks weird because the board just magically stops :)
I honestly have had so much fun with this game, is it worth $40? For being the best skate game on PS4 I would say yes but its up to you! I surely don't regret my purchase.
I think what makes thps so good is the little Easter eggs, secret unlocks, and secret levels. The music is also a plus,I’m excited for the remaster version next month.
I guess Skater XL put itself in a weird spot, especially coming out a whole year or two before Session (or more, since it's still in pre-alpha as of the writing of this comment). I guess everyone can understand and appreciate that it's for skaters, by skaters, but that ultimately alienates a non-skater audience that's very much interested in a game that pushes the genre forward. But that audience would probably need more than what 1.0 has to offer, which is one of the reasons why there's so much complaining about the price. Even a lot of people who bought it in EA agree that $40 is steep for what's in the package. Had it come out close to Session or afterward, perhaps there wouldn't be such a heated discussion around its lack of content cuz Session is aiming to be that content-heavy skateboarding game everyone expected from Skate 4 before EA said it was happening not that long ago (if it's Skate 4, which I really hope it is). Of course, they can always add to it, but that would probably bring up the question as to why they didn't keep the game in early access for longer when those supposed core features that everyone wants right now (e.g. native online multiplayer) are implemented. And why hike up the price when it still feels like beta? Are they THAT short on money? Who knows in what state it will be when Session comes out of early access, but looking at the two right now, it seems like SXL is perfect for those who just want to free roam and do what they want while Session is going to have a story and missions and whatnot, much like Skate. And the next Skate game might as well come out in the same window as Session, which, as a fan of Session, I think will be a very interesting situation.
Well, considering the state of game development these days where games are released in an incomplete state and expanded through major updates coined as “seasons”, its not surprising that they released it this early. This way, they can keep the hype up through every update, while getting more time to develop. Plus there’s the advantage of market share during a scarcity of skateboarding games. The downside is that future skateboarding games can learn from the shortfalls of SkaterXL to release a better product, IF they take advantage of the opportunity. I personally believe they should’ve taken more time, tho.
I get what your saying about skater xl alienating non skaters, but i don’t think was even trying to be the NEXT genre defining game in the first place. So yeah it is a bit daunting for non skaters, but I think with the support of the skating community I think that this game is gonna be just fine
Session will never attract the casual audience simply for the fact that the gameplay mechanics aren't fluid at all. They are extremely clunky. You have more trick options in Session but executing them properly feels more difficult than on a real skateboard. Session has been in development for 5 years now and they haven't been able to nail down the core gameplay mechanics yet. Simply put, in its current form, Session isn't fun to play.
Really good review, Rat! I like it for messing around on and I can go for quite a while but I am hoping they give us more tricks and maps in the updates and hopefully some better solutions to the problems you outlined.
It’s 100% worth it in my opinion. Multiplayer will come later, and I’m sure the physics will get way better and customizable. It’s the beginning of a great game.
I think what your problem was with your nollie double heel and nollie double flip was more your timing with when you flick left or right on the right stick after you let up on your left stick. I've experienced what you were going through through the beta and found that timing practice cleaned up my double flips to not go completly dolphin on me. Once you get the timing down, it all relies on how long you hold the right stick out for the double hell or flip to happen. Hope that helps you out. Loved the review!
You really think it's the most realistic skateboarding sim ever released? I'm honestly having a hard time considering it a "sim." Coming from Session, which feels much more "sim" to me, I'm really enjoying SkaterXL as a more casual experience.
It's always come off as a more arcadey type game to me, but having now spent 15 minutes actually trying it, it plays way better than any clips I'd seen especially ESPECIALLY the official trailers
To be fair. Session it's not fully released yet (not 1.0 version yet) so it's technically skaterXL is most realistic skateboarding game right now. It may be change after session fully released or maybe not if skaterXL update the gameplay with adding modded physic option like they have in pc.
I feel the opposite. Session feels stiff and unrepsonsive compared to sxl. To me, session has good graphics, a nice selection of tricks and a cool character customization feature. But none of that matters to me when the gameplay feels bad and the animations look... lets just say awkward. For me it seems session = tony hawk compared to sxl = skate 3.
I bought this one it came out for Xbox for the full price and I absolutely think this game was worth the price. Some of the challenges are definitely annoying like you said but I've been having a blast just learning the system and making my own lines here and there.
Hey Aaron, thank you for the review. I absolutely agree with you, the gameplay and physics are absolutely great. But it is lacking content, and I don’t mean a story (maybe some more challenges). I haven’t even discovered everything yet, but I am already noticing the flow of the maps aren’t as good. I’ve played skate 3 one and a half times, because I never play the story at all, I just skate around the entire time.
Regarding your "pop out" comments. It just seems like you're popping way too high on everything. For a game where you just record footage on a couple aspect seems meh. Like you easily nollied over a picnic table longways.
The game is very floaty to begin with and there is a high pop option where both sticks are held down instead of just the back foot you get mad air. If you want something with a realistic pop height and play on pc/XBox try Session
Yea , that’s why I got mods on my pc version of the game. You can set how high you wanna pop and high pop to make it look more realistic and many more options. I would say the pc version is the best way you can experience this game. Also you can download tons of custom maps and clothes and decks, trucks and grip
To the double flip you don’t do a high jump, when you are going to do a double kickflip put the joystick to the side of the heel and then flick it fast when you ollie again same for the double heel
Before writing this, let me just say that I know I’m in the minority with this opinion. When I play a skateboard game, I don’t want to play a sim where I’m doing tricks in the game what I can almost do in real life. Obviously I’m not a pro and can’t do everything, but still. I find games like the Tonk Hawk Pro Skater series much more entertaining because they represent, for lack of a better term, the fantasy side of skateboarding. Skate XL looks great and plays great, kudos to the developers, but I’m much more looking forward the release of THPS 1+2 coming out soon.
its the best skater sim out there. you got tons of maps in the discord. its not a game for non skaters for sure, its not tony hawk. And for double flips try moving the flipping analog diagonal and downwards
Have you seen session, crea-ture knows how to handle a development of a game, easy day even had experience with an app game, but I guess they only wanted our trust so we would give them our money and then do the biggest AWOL in recent gaming history
how far a game has come doesnt mean shit if the game just isnt ready for launch. you also shouldnt put a game on console if you need pc mods to enjoy it lmao
Soon Forgot you are 100% correct. I bought this the day it came out on PS4, huge disappointment. Skate was a million times more fun than this tech demo.
@Soon Forgot this isnt a skate wannabe. there are some tricks you cant do in skater xl thats in ea skate, but the controls and level of intricacies in order to style your trick out in subtle ways is so much better in this. its also much more satisfying to learn these tricks than ea skate. i playeda lot of hours in ea skate 1 and 2 and they were amazing but you reach a point where the tricks just dont look good because they are preset animations and not physics based. might not be for everyone but they have reached a level of complexity and user input freedom when it comes to the tricks that far surpasses ea skate. although it still needs a lot of work and polish in certain aspects like the need for an open world, bugs, multiplayer, etc. but "wannabe" is such a lame reductive perspective on something that was clearly made with passion.
Bought it on launch day? I've had this early access since last year! Because when you can spend only $15 and have the best skateboarding "simulator" on the market... That's what you do
I'm sure you get this comment every now and then but I gotta tell you i remember watching your freestyle clips over a decade ago and its kinda cool to see you still at the youtube game, a big achievement!
actually it is worth it for some people, it may not be the funnest game right now, but they'll update in the future. Also multiplayer is going to happen. The reason skaters love it is it's realism.
The answer is yes buy it and do what a real skater does, skate. There's no need for a story when you're looking to create those lines and get better at it every try
This game is for skaters, it's about progression and not giving up. If they add the online I want to play games of skate. When I play skate I didn't care to much for the challenges. It was all about skating.
Thankfully the devs have been so supportive of the morning community, even making modding way easier than any other game (literally dragging and dropping files in most cases.) Really happy about the official release, but more glad I got it in early release so I only spent $15 instead of $40.
I don’t like this game to much glitches don’t like how grant park looks don’t like the camera angle the list can go on I’m waiting for Tony hawk & skate 4 coming out
I was specifically waiting for your review before deciding to pick this up. It's the exact kind of game I want right now while I wait for Tony Hawk. Thanks for doing an awesome review. Btw that Go Go Hypergrind game you reviewed in the past is crazy expensive now. Looking forward to your future content.
"nothing to do" lmao what? it's a game about skateboarding. you skate. that's what you do. kids these days need 'achievements' to be motivated to play the game, rather than just having fun with the game mechanics... you skate, find spots, shoot videos, just like in real skateboarding. granted, I admit $40 is a bit steep for the console version in particular. on PC, the limitless additional content of mods makes it a much better value. vert does kinda suck, but almost nobody actually skates those kind of ramps in real life anyway outside of the olympics and xgames skaters. all this said, the game is only barely in "1.0" which is really more like it's still in early-access.
streets was designed by Jean Olive, I remember this guy from the skate 3 community, made great videos and create-a-park's so no surprise his modded level was good enough to be ported into the official S XL game
14:15 - This challenge is super easy. How fast you flick decides how fast the board spins. It is possible to do double flips on flat with low pop. I think your mistake was doing high pop. Low pop and fast flick (not possible to flick as fast with high pop) would'a done the trick. Watching your whole video, all of your flicks and scoops seem super slow. Use the high pop less, it grants you a bit of air time, but you will flick/scoop 2x faster (if not more) with low pop which is a far superior technique.
Speaking of the double heelflip/kickflip situation, you dont have to pop high, meaning you dont need to press down on both sticks to complete the two flips or if you do, just dont hold the back foot stick after you start flipping so it doesn't manipulate the board.
To flick hard and do double flips, pull the left stick to the right and as soon as you Ollie pull it to the left to do double kick flips. Reverse the directions for heel flips. I got that difficult challenge first try using this technique.
to do the double flips you have to move your stick to the opposite direction, so when would you like to double flip you will move it to the right and then flick from right to left as fast as possible. It is very consistent.
Tip for landing in manual start pulling the stick back before you land as long as it’s not all the way back it should land each time if your stance is right
That Nollie Double Heel to Nollie Double Flip. As a few others have commented, just hold up on your front foot only. Even though the preview tells you to hold both sticks up, just do your front foot... The challenge that took me forever was the BS 540 Mute off the Qtr. That shit gave me carpal tunnel.
When I played it, it felt like the equivalent of playing with Tech Decks. It's not perfect and doesn't have a whole lot but damn, it's so satisfying just flipping the board around and roaming with it.
X360 controller on pc dude
I use a PS3 controller for the PC version and double flips are easy, even on flat.
When that skater falls it looks like he's completely giving up on life.
I hope that’s not a complaint the bails are clean in this game
@@absolutelypro4612 They look hilarious.
Would be nice if they added some bails were they are on their feet instead of falling on the ground each time!
Unreal and Unity games tend to do that especially when they're not optimized enough.
Aren't we all

You brought back a memory I forgot I had

Xl is on steam
Skater XL and Sessions have been out for over a year on Steam. Also Sessions was released a bit ago on xbox. Plus Skate 4 will be on next gen.
They have a way bigger development team too, so itll be easy for them to design a "better game quicker" I quoted it because it's not necessarily going to be better, but I think the concept was understood.. they took a hit on skate 3, which is why they didnt want to make skate 4.. but now that the demand has risen, they want to cash in on it.
this is a very pc game that's just being ported to consoles though... this game isn't made with consoles in mind atm.
This game realistic AF!! When I mastered tre’s I lost my varials just like irl 😂😂😂
Same for the varial
that is sooo true, i feel now that varial is impossible like seriously.... i can sometimes get 540 flip but cant varial anymore, i just made comeback and will have tre's unlocked next time i go skate it is just the backfoot that must be on the board not 5 cm of the board hahaha. but varial nope did my first 5 years ago but then i stopped doing them just like heelflips but can get the doubble heel flip just by accident well thats good.

so when i first started playing i also complained about the massive ollies in this game, especially when popping out of grinds and mannies. but one of this game's massive strengths is the modding community. there's a mod called XXL mod which includes in it an old mod called StatsMenu, which allows you to have granular control over stuff like that. you can increase the gravity, decrease manny and grind pop out individually, flip speed, scoop speed, and several other things. on top of this, the mod allows you to do new stuff like forward flips and one foot grabs, and even adds a third ollie height called baby pop which allows you to pop extremely low, which is nice for things like hopping up small curbs without jumping like 5 feet in the air. it's great for getting very realistic footy. you can also save your stats so you can quickly swap between presets you've created. what i do is have one preset that i use for more realistic skating, and then tweak it if it will help me make a particular trick i'm trying look believable.
Can you link me? Thanks! Also share preset
Wish i saw this before commenting! Lol great stuff

U can do forward flips in vanilla
@@eyelove4206 true, but the mod makes it much easier. It also allows you to do more vertical shuvs, hard flips, and tre flips. I don't even use it for literal forward flips.
Grant Park is surprisingly accurate! They got the bridge going to the metra station and the skyline is pretty close to the real thing. The only thing that was missing was the statues without arms right behind where the player starts the level hahaha
Can you skate across the street to the sea wall?
I was thinking the same thing. It’s so dope to be able to skate one of my local(ish) parks in a video game and do all my dream tricks
I visited there and skated it last summer and I was so surprised how accurate it was
considering all the time i've gotten sucked into while trying to perfect my 3 trick lines on a game i spent 20 bucks on for early access, yes this game was very worth the investment. this is the skateboarder's skating game, the others are good but are more for the general market
Literally just bought the game today on Steam, and I love it, I love how one of the biggest parts of the game is finding a cool spot, lining yourself up and seeing what you can come up with, just like real life skating. Since you got it on Steam you should check out the modding scene

My favorite thing about skater xl is it makes me feel like I do when I'm skating. There are times when it will take 30 mins to get a trick, and not because it's a hard game, but because the board is acting like it does irl.
Yeah. I love how you are actually doing the tricks rather than just inputting commands
Sounds so fun
FYI the challenges are only in regular stance, so it really excludes half of the audience, you probably didn't notice as you skate regular, that makes the game really bare for all goofy skaters

what glitches?
@@Hunne2303 sometimes you just random pop an ollie, and some fails look funny
Bxch4r that’s because your still turning with thumb sticks. As soon as u put upward/downward input on the wrong stick you’ll pop a trick. Not a glitch just how the mechanics work
I have the PS4 version and I had my fair share of glitches. Examples:
-When I respawn back to the starting point, my skater's back foot is stuck to the middle of the board and it won't unstick until I pop a nollie
-When I do big gaps, the skater would land the trick but the half of the board is stuck in the ground until he eventually bails
-When I try to do challenges, the frame rate drops, hard, and the game lags
-Sometimes when I try to do small turns with the left joystick, even with just barely nudging it, the skater pops a nollie
-At the mega ramp when rolling straight down the ramp, my skater would start grinding even though there is no rail or edges
@@Hunne2303 here's the glitches I've experienced
while I'm playing, the screen goes black for a few seconds (but the game continues to play)
sometimes my skater's legs won't push
wheels go through the ground
game freezes and I have to restart
weird graphical glitches where the surroundings flashes white
sometimes the wrong trick name is shown, if I do a shuvit ...it'll just say "Ollie" or if I do a Tre Flip, it'll say "kickflip"
Seems real floaty in the air.
And for a 'sim' it looks too easy to land tricks with a bad landing

@@ruffles886 definitely! I think people are hyped for it because there's been such a drought of skateboarding games, particularly on the more realistic side.
This ain’t free to play and the game is 40 bucks you should have ask for more content day one.

I have the PS4 version and when I try to do challenges, the frame rate drops and the game lags. Anyone else experiencing that or is that just me?
I took garrets gaming advice and changed my settings to make it super realistic and I like it it makes even a board slide challenging
I finished my 2 hours on Session and I can’t decide if I should get the full. I really like the control scheme, it’s just annoying falling over everything you touch by accident
I have over 150 hours and yeah I’d get the full. You get used to it and once you get hella comfortable with the controls you don’t hit anything ever
I think that'll get fixed it's in early access and there was a post about revamping all the physics
to do double flips and flick hard you have to do this. 1. Pop the board. with one or both sticks 2. let go of the stick that you kick with. 3 flick it to the left or right fast. do NOT pop the board and then kick the board in one motion. you have to let go of the kicking stick and then flick it fast. this is how you do double flips , triple flips or fast flips. like you would do in real life. if you wanna do a high fast good looking kickflip, kicking the board the second after you pop is not the way to go. you have to do it ollie. so drag your foot up the board, like you would do when doing a ollie. when your kicking foot is almost at the top of the board then you kick out. ollie kickflip. not just a kickflip that gets no air at all.
i think Session's physics are better because everything looks like slow motion in this

Why do none of the reviews for this game talk about how bare bones the customization options are? There are practically no gameplay options. You just have to deal with it. Session has an insane level of depth to deciding how you want to control your skater.
I believe session was in development way before SkaterXL

Honestly if there were a story mode I probably wouldn't even touch it anyway. The way I see it, this game is just a virtual version of skating in real life. You don't really have a goal outside of the trick you're trying to land, and there certainly isn't any story mode. Just depends on what you value in a game, and what you were looking to get out of this one I suppose.

I'm honestly having a hard time considering it a "sim."
Coming from Session, which feels much more "sim" to me, I'm really enjoying SkaterXL as a more casual experience.
It's always come off as a more arcadey type game to me, but having now spent 15 minutes actually trying it, it plays way better than any clips I'd seen especially ESPECIALLY the official trailers
I didn't know session was out yet?

It's really nice seeing him review something that's not bad for once

That's what you do
It looks like Skate but dull, lacks charisma and everything feels empty and lifeless.
@@michaelruiz3883 still gonna need a lot of work
@@michaelruiz3883 don't want to hear that bs don't put a price tag on a half ass game
Just like your one sentence review
its a simulator that relies on mods.
@@luitsatrap the control scheme is the star of the show.
I'm sure you get this comment every now and then but I gotta tell you i remember watching your freestyle clips over a decade ago and its kinda cool to see you still at the youtube game, a big achievement!
I just hate how everything looks so slow and floaty.
Yea thats why i had bought Session instead awhile ago, but i regret it because it seems like Skaterxl is rising to the occasion
Yong Gun same lol
Maxim Saelens i just bought it and installed xxl mod and its so good
Just found your channel and I love your videos man. Got me thinking about games I would've otherwise never thought about picking up.
looking back at this video this game has gotten way better importing mods to console and releasing a mp in the month or so
Wow, very thorough and great review. Hopefully the devs see this because there's a lot of good comments and feedback here.
The answer is: No
Saved you 23 minutes.
actually it is worth it for some people, it may not be the funnest game right now, but they'll update in the future.
Im glad you brought up how frustrating the manual system is. Its def what i struggled with the most
$20 on Steam, at least a few weeks ago . Definitely still in development , it will get better! so go ahead and get this game 👍
Its 33 euros now because of the 1.0 release
1.0 release changed to 40$
Cheers man. Appreciate the vids from over here in London. Gna download now skate rat!
It just feels Incomplete, and definitely not worth 40$. :(
you do realise its a small studio right
Troy Aladi and it’s not a complete game yet
@@WhoopEaterz if its a small studio, then the game should be no more than 20
what made you buy this game, do you do research?
@@ashleyjohansson230 how does that make sense
Thankfully the devs have been so supportive of the morning community, even making modding way easier than any other game (literally dragging and dropping files in most cases.)
Really happy about the official release, but more glad I got it in early release so I only spent $15 instead of $40.
I don’t like this game to much glitches don’t like how grant park looks don’t like the camera angle the list can go on I’m waiting for Tony hawk & skate 4 coming out
Try Skater XL with mods if you are playing on PC. Highly recommend to try atleast, gaming experience changes dramatically!!
this is a low brain capacity comment
I was specifically waiting for your review before deciding to pick this up. It's the exact kind of game I want right now while I wait for Tony Hawk. Thanks for doing an awesome review. Btw that Go Go Hypergrind game you reviewed in the past is crazy expensive now. Looking forward to your future content.
"nothing to do"
lmao what? it's a game about skateboarding. you skate. that's what you do. kids these days need 'achievements' to be motivated to play the game, rather than just having fun with the game mechanics... you skate, find spots, shoot videos, just like in real skateboarding.
granted, I admit $40 is a bit steep for the console version in particular. on PC, the limitless additional content of mods makes it a much better value. vert does kinda suck, but almost nobody actually skates those kind of ramps in real life anyway outside of the olympics and xgames skaters. all this said, the game is only barely in "1.0" which is really more like it's still in early-access.
Game feels like a big tutorial .. Needs more to do, events and challenges to open up new locations, skaters, outfits etc etc ..
streets was designed by Jean Olive, I remember this guy from the skate 3 community, made great videos and create-a-park's so no surprise his modded level was good enough to be ported into the official S XL game
“Nothing to do” 😂skate! Plenty of spots..
I agree. I think people want more challenges, things to collect.. But I am happy they got the skating feeling good and realistic.
Hey! Nice video!
To do double flips you can put your front foot's stick to the right before you pop, it helps A LOT.
SKater Xl is NOT the most realistic game. Session is.
Lol

14:15 - This challenge is super easy. How fast you flick decides how fast the board spins. It is possible to do double flips on flat with low pop. I think your mistake was doing high pop. Low pop and fast flick (not possible to flick as fast with high pop) would'a done the trick. Watching your whole video, all of your flicks and scoops seem super slow. Use the high pop less, it grants you a bit of air time, but you will flick/scoop 2x faster (if not more) with low pop which is a far superior technique.
I did double tre flip 2nd try on flat xD. I'm playing it and watching the video. Sweet review!
Hudland looks like the skate park in the very first tony hawk demo...can anyone confirm?
Speaking of the double heelflip/kickflip situation, you dont have to pop high, meaning you dont need to press down on both sticks to complete the two flips or if you do, just dont hold the back foot stick after you start flipping so it doesn't manipulate the board.
nice review my dude! very honest and not just hating on the game. Keep up the good work :)
To flick hard and do double flips, pull the left stick to the right and as soon as you Ollie pull it to the left to do double kick flips. Reverse the directions for heel flips. I got that difficult challenge first try using this technique.
I'm a diehard for Skate's control layout, but I'm glad Skater XL exists and offers a new avenue for skating games.
Skating transition in this game is as fun as trying to stroke an angry bull.
to do the double flips you have to move your stick to the opposite direction, so when would you like to double flip you will move it to the right and then flick from right to left as fast as possible. It is very consistent.
Tip for landing in manual start pulling the stick back before you land as long as it’s not all the way back it should land each time if your stance is right
For double flips: just don't use high pop, if you've used only low pop you'd have it in first try
Sick skills already, radrat!
It's not perfect and doesn't have a whole lot but damn, it's so satisfying just flipping the board around and roaming with it.
you don’t have to pop out a ledge or rail, you can click both sticks to exit the grind in the direction you’re moving :)
