@@skateboardingiscool1 They definitely saw the success of the first and pumped out the next two because of it. I did like the park editor in #3 but feel it could have been made a lot better if you could just resize objects. Besides that, the graphics feel cartoony and the physics are either way too loose or too stiff, depending the difficulty. The city feels like someone just copy and pasted 20 real life spots into a mini-Pangea. Don't see them ever topping the skate 1 map.
In a game of S.K.A.T.E, you can do 540s using both sticks and the NPCs can’t do that. I do like the follow missions like if I was hanging out with another character. I also believe having other characters in a contest wether transition or street was a good choice, if it was real life I would like to see multiple skaters skate at once in a contest, besides you’ll be out of your comfort zone skating with others forcing you to adapt. Sure NPCs also blocked me a decent amount of times but eh, you win some lose some. I saw your gameplay, when I saw you going down that ramp with Jason Dill, going only straight bumping into him was suicide you should have gone left a little to gain more space or take the different ramp. But I’ll get it if you can’t do so. Deathraces are more different than you think, I loved the races myself, but just a few tips I can give for you, pushing doesn’t make you go faster unless you are below the 3 pushes, the timer is there to indicate if you still qualify for the race, skipping too many gates while being allowed, it can result in you being disqualified only if the timer reaches 0, keeping up speed is also important so I usually focus on my grounds, the slope I’m on.
the rail challenge is meant to make you learn to use session markers. if you bailed on the 51 ft grind, you are supposed to teleport back to your marker. the grey gates in death race are because you missed the green gate before it. not hitting the gates hurts your time and their placement shows you the fastest route. crouching just lets you grab your board for faster turning.
the rail challenge is MOST DEFINITELY not teaching you markers, it is WAAYYY too late in the game for it to still be giving you tutorials, and matrix plaza is a no skate zone, so you cant even set markers there in the first place.
Skate 1 is an experience of its time and a mindblowing one too To sit down as an adult in 2021 and finding errors just for the sake of it is bs of course there are many but i rememember as a kid coming from thps that game blew my mind i didnt care how weird transport was yes i remember that no walking f... up big time because you could walk in thug but aside from that i dont think any game ever hit like skate
i had to the same experience. it blew my mind and to this day is the most fun i’ve ever had with a skateboarding game. nothing has ever hit like it. but i have my hopes up for skate 4!
Me and my buddies would chill and play skate 1 and just find a random spot to set a marker and play a game of skate handing the controller back and forth haha. Best game to kill time on and create realistic lines.
I would honestly consider this to be my personal favorite Skate game if you could get off your board and walk around. I liked the design of the map much more in this game than in Skate 2, and then soundtrack was better too. It would be nice if we could see a rerelease where you can get off your board and walk, similar to how Metal Gear Solid 3 was later rereleased with a controllable 3D camera that the original version lacked, which improved the game drastically.
I absolutely LOVE the original skate's art style, it's my favourite of any skateboarding game alongside the original Underground and Proving Grounds. I have a very personal and obsessive attachment to mid-late 2000s culture so I'm biased but this is my favourite skate game purely because its art style is SO strong and reminiscent of my favourite era. Not to mention that soundtrack, Band of Horses - The Funeral is so so so so so perfect for the menus. Even the map design is somehow nostalgic, and I'd say it has better graphics than any of the other skate games (compare it to skate 3 with the san van pack and it's obvious). But I'm DEFINITELY looking at things with rose tinted glasses and I understand why this is the least favourite of most people. Love your channel man and I'll always keep watching you 💙
Here in Brazil I have never been able to play Skate 1 or 2, by pure luck I found Skate 3 to buy from a collector, I really wanted to have the opportunity to play 1 and 2, very well done video, congratulations!
The first game is good if not for a primer for number 2. 2 doesn't have a detailed map like 1 does but if you're familiar with the city by playing 1 then you'll notice all the changes and all the things they added in 2. If I had to choose only one of the titles to play, then it would be 2
"But I think Skate just wanted to show off their NPC skater engine or something because the contests are always jams... have more fun jamming a fork in a power outlet." holy fuck aron went nuclear there
I missed so many classes because of this game. To me it was perfection, everything I could ask for in a game at the time. I loved that after a long, grueling day of skating in the streets, I loved being able to come home and relax with some street skating.
Maybe it’s not the best idea to do a review of this game right after a play through with reversed controls 😂 The initial online Motes and multiplayer were not touched upon other than the skate-real aspect. The fact that you can play this game in so many different ways depending on your style and skill level is what has made players stick to this game for more than 10 years; perhaps, more freeskate and online play than what the career could ever offer. Glitches are also generally a thing which has made most of if not all of skateboarding games more interesting for a lot of players. It’s the same with improv in the Tony hawk games. Appreciate the video regardless RR, but I hope you won’t judge a game by letting your frustrations of a single mode such as death race have such a large impact on your overall evaluation.
Yeah alot of what you said in the first two minute had so many inaccuracies. For instance. You ollie high by holding the analog down for a sec. Not flicking it faster. And also the controls being flipped is on you, and the emulator. I hate people makimg reviews and getting so mucj wrong. Shows how much research you do and how much you understand.
You do realise you can fast travel to most challenges? You just click on them on the map and it's loads you in like 5 foot in front of the pro or challenge spot hahahaha
I still have Thrasher's "Skate and Destroy". I remember that everyone of my friends didn't like it and couldn't handle it. I actually liked it even though it didn't make sense in a lot of ways and got really goot at it. I definetly have to play it again.
I went from Skate 3 to Skate after playing for a while and got bored of the map. I had no issues whatsoever transitioning and the game runs great on Xbox One!
I'm telling you, if you want to have a lot of fun skating in a game without spending three months learning just how to do an ollie, like in Session, then you should definitely try Skate 1 on PS3 or Xbox 360. Honestly, this game is amazing. It has literally the best controls-very smooth. The difficulty level is just high enough to be fun without the total frustration you get in Session where landing a simple grind seems impossible! If you want to relax and land tricks like Jamie Thomas or do gaps like Jaws, play Skate. It’s graphically stunning, the spots are incredible, and there are so many places to spend hours trying all kinds of tricks. Honestly, even the sound of the wheels is perfect. personnaly best game ever of skate for me and same again in 2024. Honestly, who thought it was a great idea to put steering on the triggers in "Session"? Who? It’s seriously the worst idea of the century. after in skate one i loved litterally the city , the city in skate 1 is very original and very nice realized really the spots are realist and very fun a mix betwen boston nyc SF and the banlieux US classic ! very Skate One remains the best.
I recently played Skate 1 for the first time and maybe it’s just me loving Skate 2 and 3 but I absolutely did not see the hype behind Skate 1. Fast travel helps a lot but the weird yellow hue, not being able to get off your board, the challenges, the map. I didn’t really like any of it. I know that it launched Skate 2 and Skate 3 but I just wasn’t into it. I did like how you worked to get sponsored. That was fun. The physics were pretty good and I liked those better than Skate 3 physics aside from transition. I also hated the whole getting put into the wrong stance thing though
I only played the EA skate demo and thought it was good, i played alot of skate 2 and i thought it was the best. Skate 3 is fun but the most unrealistic of the series
When this game first came out it blew my mind. My friend and I played the DEMO all night long. If you have that much fun playing a demo then you know the game is good
Each skate game has its own argument for not only best game in the series, but best game of all time 🤷♂️ Skate 1 is its tone and atmosphere. Skate 2 I'd say is the map but they're all great. Skate 3 with the online and the online team activity. You could JUST make film AND post it it was such a good time. And the creative stuff. I feel like it had the weakest map and tone but marginally. Sick soundtrack though. Session is almost there for my favorite. But the difficulty settings weight on skate so well that you can get a good sim feel. Session is so close even if it was just slightly less glitchy I'd be soooo on board constantly. But between that lack of grabs. Im still tackling the learning curve the freedom of the tricks you can do and with tbe experimental settings are just prime. Its i don't mind spending 40 minutes to get a challenge correct, i do mind when after an hour and half ive done it 3 times but the game wont accept it. Its 95% to being the best skateboarding game ever though i do love it. Um... love you a ton you can fast travel to the challenges though you gotta zoom in on the map but it lets you. I kinda just enjoy skating around enough that if it's not uphill im skating to it still.
I beat the entire game. Then a couple days later I started a new career. As I was playing I couldn’t help but recall how you didn’t know about fast travel. 😂. I feel like you should replay the game so you can give it a 2nd chance. After getting somewhat familiar with the controls and what the missions requirements are going to be from my first play through it was much easier on my 2nd play through. It actually got me loving Skate. Though the X games mega ramp part is kind of annoying. I feel like the judges are not scoring my tricks high enough. It basically just means in order to win I have hold L2/LT and Circle/B while spinning then hit the 2nd ramp and hold R2/RT and Circle/B while spinning the land then trick to win. I feel like those tricks are too easy. The tricks that I think are better and much harder to do end up not coming close to winning. So i basically hate how they did the x games part. Another thing I would criticize the game for is the lack of manual tricks. I think the only trick you can do while in a manual is revert. The game lacks a lot of tricks. I am not familiar with a lot of names for tricks. As I kid I knew a lot. Anyway the few I can recall that I see missing is Impossible, Boneless Ollie, darkslide grind. I don’t know the name of the trick but it’s basically where the skater goes up a quarter or half pipe and does a one arm hand stand while doing a grab trick. Anyway on my 2nd play through I realized I didn’t actually have to do everything to unlock it. I unlocked it halfway through the game. Whereas on my first career I had done everything 😂. Makes me think when I was a kid in 2007 I beat the x games and then just stopped playing. In my defense to why I can’t remember beating the game as a kid is one it is over 16 years ago. Two I only played the game for a short while. I didn’t even get to keep that Xbox 360 for that long. Three I played the game with my brother and we took turns. I don’t remember how we decided to take turns and for all I know he beat the game for us. Though then again I was always really good at video games. I might suck at the beginning but I usually am able to adapt. Makes me wish I was able to record all of my gameplay.
So I'm playing this game on Game Pass right now and I'm able to fast travel to challenges and to subways. Maybe this is a feature they somehow added in for the Game Pass version of the game, IDK.
This game has a certain charm compared to the Skate 2 and 3. Aside from the fact that it was extremely groundbreaking when it came out, it’s like a time capsule of a special time in skateboarding. The map itself isn’t just jam packed with skateable spots. There’s suburbs with strip malls with random rails out front. Makes it look a lot more relatable as opposed to everything being super polished. Lastly, it has one of the best video game soundtracks of all time. I don’t think Nirvana has been in any other non music video game soundtrack.
Hell yeah! U mentioned some things about this game that always made it stand out to me that I don’t really see others talk about. There are things in this game I loved that they left out or changed in the sequels that I wasn’t happy about
I'm the kind of person you're reffering to and I don't agree with your conclusion. 1,5 year ago I bought xbox 360 and played through Skate for the first time and had best time of my life. What distinguishes this game from the rest is focusing of "micro scale" of skateboarding where every curb or small bump matters. You can set your camera low in other skateboarding games, but they aren't build around this idea so it doesn't feel the same. Of course it feels kinda stiff and annoying compered to skate 2,3, skater xl or session but none any other game gave me experience so close to real skateboarding as Skate 1. Now I rather play modern skateboarding games because they are more "user friendly" but Skate 1 for me is still number one. I loved to play something newer with this design approach but I don't think this will ever happen.
it’s number one for me too. i’ve never felt so much like i was the skater before or since. i really hope they take how this game feels for skate 4 and improve it with all the advancements that have come since.
This game was the reason I bought an Xbox 360! Then I played the demo for weeks until I could afford the game because I was a teen and barely had money lol
I love having other skaters in the jam challenges. It feels more alive to me and I like the extra challenge of avoiding them given how easy it is to make the points if you practise.
10:00 i fast traveled every where. When I had to follow this guy I messed up 1 time near the end because I didn’t clear the gap and went left thinking I could go around and meet him that way. I then messed up a few more times. I hated this mission before the guy fell down too much. It was too long of a trip and the reward sucked.
I believe these missions would have been fun if there was dialogue and no distance meters or at least not a strict meter. 2,000 feet would have been reasonable
Uhhh you know on Pat Duffy’s challenge you can just skate up the ramp on the left side of the matrix to get to the second floor? You didn’t have to do anything fancy 😂
Fun fact, I never owned this game. I had the timed demo on my PS3.. and played it for HOURS. I had the tutorial bit memorized, would knock it out in a minute, then play in that little locked down community center. I would time out, restart, and repeat for hours.. not sure why I never bought the game?? But I got a lot of fun from it :)
Today i wanted to start with Skate 1 campaign on Xbox One (Skate 2 was best skateboarding game ever longtime) but i figured that was only from nostalgia. I play SXL and Session and after that is too hard go back to Skate series… so i will play only new skate games … SXL and Session have great controls and it makes no fun to play Skate with its controls….
Honestly I could not stand session, not sure if it updated enough to be better or made the map better but it feels incredibly unnatural and there was hardly anything to actually skate in the map, nevermind that it was the size of a parking lot. I also found using the triggers to turn to be absolutely bizarre and you land at ridiculous angles like nothing happened. Why have 2 sticks and use triggers to turn? Not sure any other game has ever done that.
I mean to say "who would have the time to do that" when talking about the film challenges just goes to show the issue is you and not the game. The whole point of the film challenges is to explore the map and find the best spot for the job. Got a long grind challenge? Search for a long rail to get the best vid! Got an air requirement? Find a bowl or half pipe to get some killer air. Got both? Then sesh the bowl and with the speed from the transition hit the coping and grind round the bowl! I've found so many spots that look like they are litarally designed for the film challenges, the whole point is exploration!
I think this is the best game for free skating. There’s so much room for creativity. It doesn’t feel like everything is intentionally placed. I’ve found so many cool spots and gaps that just don’t exist in the following 2 games.

Deathraces are more different than you think, I loved the races myself, but just a few tips I can give for you,
pushing doesn’t make you go faster unless you are below the 3 pushes,
the timer is there to indicate if you still qualify for the race, skipping too many gates while being allowed, it can result in you being disqualified only if the timer reaches 0, keeping up speed is also important so I usually focus on my grounds, the slope I’m on.
I loved death racing, I used to do that my skate friends so it was a cool feature.
the rail challenge is meant to make you learn to use session markers. if you bailed on the 51 ft grind, you are supposed to teleport back to your marker. the grey gates in death race are because you missed the green gate before it. not hitting the gates hurts your time and their placement shows you the fastest route. crouching just lets you grab your board for faster turning.
the rail challenge is MOST DEFINITELY not teaching you markers, it is WAAYYY too late in the game for it to still be giving you tutorials, and matrix plaza is a no skate zone, so you cant even set markers there in the first place.
You can fast travel to challenges.
I figured it out halfway through my playthrough, but you can do it
"I'd have a lot more fun jamming a fork in a power outlet" lmao
Skate 1 is an experience of its time and a mindblowing one too
To sit down as an adult in 2021 and finding errors just for the sake of it is bs of course there are many but i rememember as a kid coming from thps that game blew my mind i didnt care how weird transport was yes i remember that no walking f... up big time because you could walk in thug but aside from that i dont think any game ever hit like skate
i had to the same experience. it blew my mind and to this day is the most fun i’ve ever had with a skateboarding game. nothing has ever hit like it. but i have my hopes up for skate 4!
Love your channel man and I'll always keep watching you 💙
Dill!! *Shakes fist*
8:38 which two skaters are you talking about?
I forgot about his beef with jason dill LMFAO ahh the memories
Here in Brazil I have never been able to play Skate 1 or 2, by pure luck I found Skate 3 to buy from a collector, I really wanted to have the opportunity to play 1 and 2, very well done video, congratulations!
The first game is good if not for a primer for number 2. 2 doesn't have a detailed map like 1 does but if you're familiar with the city by playing 1 then you'll notice all the changes and all the things they added in 2. If I had to choose only one of the titles to play, then it would be 2
"But I think Skate just wanted to show off their NPC skater engine or something because the contests are always jams... have more fun jamming a fork in a power outlet."
holy fuck aron went nuclear there
I missed so many classes because of this game. To me it was perfection, everything I could ask for in a game at the time. I loved that after a long, grueling day of skating in the streets, I loved being able to come home and relax with some street skating.
Very dumb points. You can fast travel by clicking on the quest area and you can also set a spot marker so you don't have to redo getting to a rail.
That shot at Ali wasn't necassary dude. Not very funny at all.
Maybe it’s not the best idea to do a review of this game right after a play through with reversed controls 😂
The initial online Motes and multiplayer were not touched upon other than the skate-real aspect.
The game is backwards compatible if someone is asking
How many takes did that double case hand flip take you
Yeah alot of what you said in the first two minute had so many inaccuracies.
The trick with doing jams is to wait for the npc's to drop in or whatever, it only takes ab 5-6 seconds and it doesn't affect your line
I still have Thrasher's "Skate and Destroy". I remember that everyone of my friends didn't like it and couldn't handle it. I actually liked it even though it didn't make sense in a lot of ways and got really goot at it. I definetly have to play it again.
It's really fun after some practicing, and has far superior analog steering than any Tony Hawk game I've played (only played 2, 3 and 4).
@@ultrairrelevantnobody1862 Yeah, it was way more realistic ... in most ways ;)
I went from Skate 3 to Skate after playing for a while and got bored of the map. I had no issues whatsoever transitioning and the game runs great on Xbox One!
Skate 3 is awful imo
@@HonkeyKong54 ok but who asked?
Dills from Long Island not New York?
Haha I love your reviews of skateboarding games. Always fun to watch with good perspectives
Yeah you would've had to play skate 1 before the other two to have a love for it. Otherwise it feels like a very downgraded version of the game
if you pressed the triangle you would be able to change the missions between magazines and if you press on the missions you can fast travel
I never played skate games for the challenges. It's all about free skate and in skate 2 and 3 film
Skate was that game where I had no THPS games due to my brother having them.
I remember that day where my mom gave me a copy of Skate.... good times.
What are your thoughts on the freestyle world-round up?
That skit with “corporate” was hilarious. I loudly laughed in my quiet house.
I only played the EA skate demo and thought it was good, i played alot of skate 2 and i thought it was the best. Skate 3 is fun but the most unrealistic of the series
When this game first came out it blew my mind. My friend and I played the DEMO all night long. If you have that much fun playing a demo then you know the game is good
Same with the Heavy Rain Demo back in the day played it 20-30 times
9:15 You only can't repeat the last 3 tricks. After that you're allowed to repeat
Thank you, Rad Rat! You rock, bro!
You can fast travel to challenges
Jason Dill is comming for you
Each skate game has its own argument for not only best game in the series, but best game of all time 🤷♂️
Skate 1 is its tone and atmosphere.
I really think the Ali Boulala Comment was wrong and you‘re better than that.
It's Radical Rodent.
I didn't know Harry Kane reviewed skateboarding games
That intro! The man kickflipped two games at once !
I loved to play something newer with this design approach but I don't think this will ever happen.
it’s number one for me too. i’ve never felt so much like i was the skater before or since. i really hope they take how this game feels for skate 4 and improve it with all the advancements that have come since.
yep, skate 1 for me 2 :D
10:35 lol same thing happened to me at the same spot. I too almost lost the challenge.
I believe these missions would have been fun if there was dialogue and no distance meters or at least not a strict meter. 2,000 feet would have been reasonable
Hi. I'm aron.L and I used to make trick tips.
Anyone remember Gflip late kickfliping rails in skate2???
Rather jam a fork in a power outlet lmaooo
Rad rat will you be covering skatebird?
Yo you can fast travel by clicking on the challenge on the map and clicking A/X btw
Getting on top of the overpasses in the map was a good past time
The method or grab and bail glitch was beyond entertaining
Uhhh you know on Pat Duffy’s challenge you can just skate up the ramp on the left side of the matrix to get to the second floor? You didn’t have to do anything fancy 😂
Fun fact, I never owned this game. I had the timed demo on my PS3.. and played it for HOURS. I had the tutorial bit memorized, would knock it out in a minute, then play in that little locked down community center. I would time out, restart, and repeat for hours.. not sure why I never bought the game?? But I got a lot of fun from it :)
dude playing that demo when it came out was its own whole experience for me before i got the game! it was such an epic experience
Love the corporate soundtrack during the death race segment, lol
Skate 2 is the best by far. Way better than skate 3.
Bought skate on release , it’s now on gamepass also if people missed out 👍
The skate 1 close camera was a lot better than the skate 3 close camera!
There is fast travel in the game right from the start. I guess you didn’t find it?
U can just press A or X on the challenge icon and it asks u if u want to fast travel
yes
Excellent double flip in the intro
I don't like the map design when you press start to look at where you're at. Feels really ugly to look at and control.
