2024 Toyota Prado review: Kakadu | 4WD test for LandCruiser 150 Series before new LC250 arrives!

  • The 2024 Toyota Prado - or LandCruiser 150 Series - still has some life in it yet, with its LC250 successor not set to go on sale in Australia until the middle of next year. Point being, buyers are still paying for the privilege of owning the tried-and-true 4WD - but should they be waiting for the new model instead?
    After all, the LC250 is promising to be the generational leap that the Prado series has sorely need for years now. However, buyers Down Under won't be getting the full hybrid option some other markets are getting, meaning the 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine carries over as the sole choice, albeit with the addition of mild-hybrid technology.
    In this expert review, CarsGuide Contributing Journalist Marcus Craft puts the current Prado's Kakadu flagship through its paces on- and off-road to find out if it's still a good buy with a presumably improved replacement on the horizon.

    I still love this Prado 👌

    The prado does not have front lockers, that is incorrect. They have centre and rear diff locks no frontm regardless if the model or country. I have a prado, bought brand new last year so I know for sure

    Gxl is the best spec for touring and off-road use.

    Shame the 550 Nm Hilux GR-S motor didn't eventuate in the Prado 150 Series as a swansong edition. @ 5:49 mark, this Prado has front diff lock? Surely this is incorrect information as there is no mention of a front diff lock in the specifications! Very hard to get decent 19" offroad tyres. Would be better to get the 18" wheels when shopping for LT spec all terrains.

      Get a micky thompson class 3 wheels and then add big fat 275/70/17 all terrain and you will have a luxury sedan like ride quality along with extreme off-road capabilities. Not to mention increased ground clearance as well.

    Can you answer me: I was planning to buy Toyota Prado but there was one who told me that it turns over when it has a flat tire,is that true?.

    • @carsguide
      @carsguide  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We're not aware of any instability issues in the Prado related to flat tyres (or anything else). Can only imagine the person you spoke to is referring to a one-off incident caused by a flat and erratic driving. Cheers. 🙂

      There is no need to be concerned about that, I've toured along norwegian fjords, the alps, british b-roads and most of europe at a good paste - there is no need to be concerned.

    Looking for a new chariot - shopping in the $100k luxo SUV market but I think this might tick the boxes given its off road durability. Probably won't off road much other than the missus going over kerbs at the local Woolies but I like the idea of a comfortable luxury wagon that can traverse geopolitical warzones if it needs to.

      Buy this with the beige interior and spare wheel at the back. 150l fuel capacity. Add good tires and accessories and you will have a tank on road. One of the best looking suvs.😊😊

    Why do jurnos only review top spec vehicles rather than more sensible, for off road use, GX or GXL models, my GXL does 9.5L/100km, 1400km range, i agree the are a bit dated, but are super reliable and they can be repaired, if required, just about anywhere

    I got the Kakadu for $88k d/away, delivered 6 weeks ago.
    Average economy of 9.0 litres after 4,000km of driving.
    I rejected them for years, but I can see why they are so popular.
    It’s brilliant. The centre fridge is awesome!!

    • @oggyoggy1299
      @oggyoggy1299 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think it was MotorScout, on the web.
      Complete a quick online form (no obligation to do anything) and they go out seeking bids from dealers.
      In 24 hrs I had received 3 bids (you log on and see the bids coming in) and I signed the contract with the cheapest.
      I don’t think it cost anything. I think the winning dealer flicks them a few hundred dollars.
      I change cars every few years but have never used one of these “brokers” before. I’d try it again for sure.

      And itll be worth $70k in a few months. Why not wait for the new model?

    • @tempestv8
      @tempestv8 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If used prices of old 100 Series compared to new 200 Series is used as a reference, the older model became more valuable in the first few years of the new model.
      Who is to say this isn't going to happen during the first couple of years with the 150 & 250?

    • @tonyt50
      @tonyt50 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@tempestv8 Because the current Prado's are already so far behind the rest of the market (SUVs) and the new Prado brings many upgrades that are on par with the rest of the market, thus the current Prado falls further behind.
