I’m worried about longevity of the drive train. The v8 easily went to 300k+. Add a turbo and hybrid system these won’t touch the reliability that the LC badge is pretty much known for

apparently the hyrbid power in the 4-cylinder covers most of the low-end power and the turbo-engine and hybrid work together on the rest. This is so that the engine technically doesn't get too stressed. I think even Toyota themselves said that the engine had been tested for 1 million miles.
@@faheemabbas3965 that’s awesome to hear! I think all this turbo/hybrid stuff I’d much rather trust Toyota than ford or any others, they seem to get things right and make cars that will last!
I like it, and would definitely be interested in buying one. However, by the time the Southern Toyota Distributors, and the dealers in my area get through with their add-ons, plus the Dealer mark-up, the MSRP will be irrelevant. So, I really don't see a new Land Cruiser in my future.
True. I always order without the rear seat and that is a hassle for many model. Third row pretty much defines a drug store vehicle. (One you drive to the store and not offroad)
The question is how much does it cost to repair or replace the hybrid drive train when it does go bad? We all know this model will likely have longevity issues compared to previous editions.
Jeff, My first concern is the placement of the spare tire. Just about every serious off road SUV you can name places the spare on the tailgate for ready access and that is not an option as it was on the last Prado. My second concern is the current absence of a 2 door model with manual transmission. For decades the mid-size (Prado) Land Cruiser offered these options.🤔
@@TheRayDog The 4Runner is the exception that proves the rule. Land Cruiser 70 Series, Wrangler, Bronco, FJ Cruiser, G-Wagon, Defender and the new Ineos all place the spare on the tailgate where it won't be caked in mud or slathered in road salt and grime. The last generation of Toyota Land Cruiser Prado also offered a tailgate mounted spare across the globe. Buyers who chose that option got upgraded fuel capacity of nearly FORTY! gallons. 🤩
I'm sure the aftermarket will have an option available pretty quickly. That'll free up space for an extra tank underneath for longer range touring. I'm sure the Australians will find a solution.
I mean I agree with the cloth seats pricing arguement. It takes some mental gymnastics to understand how I can buy a $55000 4Runner and get everything Toyota has but a car starting at $55k doesn’t even give u auto seats or top trim stereo. It’s confusing.
This will be made in Japan on the “famous” land cruiser line, and Toyota will guarantee parts availability for 25 years. That’s what the words “land cruiser” mean.
I drive a 2017 turbo diesel GX forturer 4WD in Australia, very basic with cloth trim & manual seats. It has a factory/stock 2 inch lift & rear diff lock. Love it on and off road. 🇦🇺🦘
My dad had the '76 and later '78 Land Cruiser, with the straight 6 and 4 speed manual in both, the only power window was the rear window. Good times. Now those were Land Cruisers.
I would have gone way smaller. If it was up to me, Length 186, width 72, height 66, wheelbase 108, ground clearance 10, weight 4,000 lbs, a 4 litre 340 horsepower inline six cylinder for simplicity and reliability. Dual injection, Solid axles so you never need a wheel alignment, swichable 2wd, 4wd high and low. Eight speed automatic. Mild hybrid option. Seats that adjust to fold fully flat. Headunit that is integrated into the dashboard not sticking up. A price point just under $50K. A wheel/tire package with real sidewalls and better ride quality like 275/60/18.
Hi Jeff, those prices you mentioned are MSRP. Real world prices are $5-10K more. The new LC's are basically glorified 4Runners. For that, I'd stick with my 5th gen 4Runner.
@@user-tb7rn1il3q Wrong. Show me a dealer in California that is charging less than MSRP for a Rav4 Hybrid or LC. I'll even give you Sequoia, 4Runner, Tundra and Tacomas. Go. Spoiler: there are none. The Dealers and Wholesalers still have prices pegged at MSRP+

Yeah I asked about Turbo lag on TRD Jon page. I get that the electric motor increases torque. But when and where? If you’re fully loaded and driving to say Heber City UT in the middle of July. Or in Arizona in July at S.L. With Hi temp. Are you gonna have serious turbo lag doing a simple drive up the hill To flagstaff or Prescott? I had a 2004 Audi 1.8T twin turbo the lag was horrible in summer months trying to get up to speed. I ended up installing a cold air intake to aid in performance. But I’m not a fan of any 4cyl twin turbo. Most of the TH-cam poster talking about not caring don’t understand that 200 series LC are going strong and were built before most of them were born. These cars will go 300K if maintained properly.
The only concerns I have is the dealership ADM. Why can't you guys just do MSRP (Monroney) and not add an addendum sticker. These rigs will be modified as soon as they leave the lot. Therefore, I'm out and will find a 1958 several years down the road from a private party and pay cash. That's what I did with my FJC TT, which is still my daily driver. Thanks Jeff!
Truth, land cruisers were top of the line power train, interior, and reliability. This has a poor interior with cheap plastics, a tiny engine being forced through turbos to make up power… that won’t last. Landcruisers were generational, now they’re a 5 year car.
I just bought a First Edition model right off the showroom floor. At first I was skeptical about the hybrid drivetrain. After driving it and getting great gas mileage and plenty of power, I'm sold on it. Toyota wrote the book on hybrids. The only complaint I have is the lack of front seat storage bins and cubby holes. A place to store sunglasses would be nice. I could do without that console cooler box and have just a big bin to hold my stuff. I don't carry passengers or tow anything so I'm OK with that. The fit and finish is exceptional as I would expect with Toyota products. I love the driving position and visibility that the Cruiser offers me. She's a "keeper".
I am glad they went smaller. They were getting too large for trailing well. The smaller engine will probably not be as reliable. Hopefully it's better than the ecoboost in the Bronco!
Better in the 4cylinder? Yes maybe for the first two years. That is a lot of stress on the 4cyl. The old land cruiser was a 300k to 400k vehicle in mileage life. Doubting this one will do the same.
I love the new LC. I think Toyota nailed it. The 200 series didn't exactly sell like hot cakes. Why? Too expensive. Deplorable gas mileage. Useless 3rd row. And huuuge... (although not that much bigger than this one). Honestly, like you said, this slots perfectly above the 4Runner price wise. I personally hate leather seats, so I'm thrilled about the cloth seats on the 1958 edition. I have been waiting for the new 4Runner, but seeing how close they are priced, I may wait a bit more, wait for the guaranteed dealer markups to die down and just get an LC.
Except the 200 doing so poorly in the USA *didn't make sense* in the grand scheme of things. The 200 sold like hotcakes in Australia, Asia, and especially the Middle East. Toyota in their infinite wisdom, however, did ZERO ADVERTISING for it and instead pushed the mall-crawler-only Sequoia because "more space" instead of pushing the same suv the UN deploys to warzones and natural disasters...
i really like it and like the cloth/tweed interior. i don't want leather anyway. hopefully the turbo/hybrid engine lasts and the prices don't ridiculous.
That's not a real Land Cruiser, it's a 4-runner with a four banger, it's made by Toyota but it won't last like a real one. We have a 200 series and I'm willing to bet that the 2024 will have more troubles than ours will over the next 300,000 miles. I'm glad to see that it has a body on frame and not a uniboby but the rest is sad.
Putting the iForce-Max (or the 4-cylinder dog of an engine if you don't get the hybrid) power train in this truck pretty much made it DOA for me. The numbers Toyota are putting out for this drive train won't be met in the real world and, if they are, will only apply to those going back and forth to Walmart. Considering all the problems Toyota has had with their iForce-Max lineup, the twitchy electronics, poor reliability, and lack of a manual transmission and transfer case, I wouldn't take this thing across someone's front lawn, much less off road anywhere. I come from a long line of die-hard Toyota fans (my parents literally won't drive anything else), so I was excited when I first saw the new Land Cruiser design. It looks awesome!! Love the design!! But literally everything else about it is junk, IMO. It shows how Toyota has continued to ignore fans and produced yet another overpriced, cheap-plastic-clad mall crawler with dubious reliability. And $55K for a base model? Idiotic. Literally not worth the money...and that's before the ridiculous dealer markups, tax, tags, registration, fees, etc. In the end, you'll be lucky to get off the lot with your base model for less than $75K. Corporate greed at its finest. I know, I know, the cult of Toyota will adore it regardless because it has a Toyota badge on it, but I really wish Toyota would actually build something I'd love to drive, both on and off the road, instead of just building a dozen versions of the same minivan. And seriously, don't bother quoting MPG numbers to people who're looking at off-road rigs. Nobody in that crowd cares. They only care about power, durability, and reliability, and this thing has none of those. The name "Land Cruiser" has been a legendary marque, but they've ruined it with this thing, the same way Land Rover did with the new "Defender." And nobody's worried about the 4Runner going anywhere. Toyota dropped the 4Runner body on the same frame and drive train as the Land Cruiser. It's literally exactly the same. The Taco is a little longer, but not significantly, and is otherwise exactly the same. I wouldn't own any of them at this point.
This and the new Saquoia are Frankencars. It's hard to comprehend how a new ground-up design can have the batteries simply suck in the back rising 5+ inches above the tailgate opening. It's like the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing. I understand that integrating the batteries into the floor will take time but I'll pass on these until they get that done.
I wouldnt hold your breath on that mpg comment. The lexus gx came out with similar set up and the mpg only went down a whopping ONE mpg from the previous model.
That was for the TTV6 which I believe isn't a hybrid. The GX550 has been confirmed by Lexus to get the new Land Cruiser's hybrid turbo 4-cylinder engine sometime next year, most likely late 2024. It will not be available at the GX550's initial launch.
Jeff, On the positive side, the price came way down and the styling is terrific especially the two tone paint. It is thrilling to see Toyota finally got the memo on providing ample leg and headroom. 👏👏👏👏
Don't really think price really came down, because this is basically what the next gen 4runner would have been. GX has always shared the same platform as the 4runner so not a true Land Cruiser like the last gen that was discontinued in 2021. 2024 GX = 2024 4Runner/LC in true terms
@@gotcoke795 That's funny, people around the world who drive a Land Cruiser 70 Series consider it to be the 'true' Land Cruiser. They think of the Prado or 200/300 Series as overweight, over complicated station wagons*. The fact is, the 200 Series sold in appallingly low numbers because Toyota inexplicably priced in on par with the Lexus LX. This more affordable Land Cruiser will sell as fast as Toyota can build them.😁😁
My excitement ENDED with the motor !!! Not a fan of the techy interior at all. Was excited to see Japanese QUALITY again, so I guess the 2024 4Runner will be my last model Toyota. I'm good with that!!!
I am not sure why Toyota is presenting this as the "Land Cruiser" in the US. Around the world in the majority of countries, it is and has always been called the Land Cruiser Prado. Also known as the 250 Series. The previous fourth-generation Land Cruiser Prado was the 150 series. The Prado version of the Land Cruiser has always been smaller, less powerful, and at a lower price than the full-size Land Cruiser, which again this is not. Another interesting fact is that in other countries, you can buy this new Land Cruiser Prado with a petrol or a diesel engine, in other words non-hybrid, and with a third row. Lastly, the 200 Series you mentioned was the full-sized Land Cruiser that was in production from 2007-2020. The current generation of the full-size Land Cruiser is the 300 Series and has been in production since 2021-present. From a price perspective, a full-size Land Cruiser that is fully equipped with a turbo engine will cost the same or more than a Toyota Sequoia Capstone.
I’m all for preference and criticism, but what gets me is the number of people commenting with completely irrational hot takes. “It has a tiny 4 cylinder…!” That makes more torque than the V8 “I don’t care because 4 cylinder!!!!” The LC is freaking awesome. Way to go, Toyota!
Couldn’t disagree w/ you more Jack! Half the cylinders and half the KDSS system, doesn’t compute to better. As John Vernon (Fletcher) said in ‘The Outlaw Josey Wales, “don’t piss down my back and tell me it’s rainin’”!😂 I’ll stick w/ the global standard and UN vehicle of choice, my ‘16 LC.
@@bobbyb.1743 And there is tech on your 2016 LC that people in the 90s would have scoffed at. And people in the 70s would have rolled their eyes at the tech in the 90s. @@jax1079innovation is good but let's not act like all tec is good or is better for us. There a reason why many companies are putting buttons back in cars. These new engines are solely for emission restrictions and that doesn't necessarily make them better cause in large vehicles like these they hardly make any real difference
The fundamental data used in this video needs to be corrected. LC250 is not the "new LC200"!!! LC200 is now LC300. The old LC150 is the new LC250. In the Middle East and Australia, we have two Land Cruisers, the large full version and the small brother. The LC300 is large and comes with a 3.5 V6 Twin Turbo and 409HP or a trusty V6 4.0l naturally aspirated. The LC250, or Prado as it is known in some markets, comes with a 2.4l Turbo petrol 267 HP. In some markets, you have a diesel and hybrid version available.
I think it looks amazing. The only SUV I think looks better is the new 70 series. If dealer mark ups aren’t criminal (below 10k) then I’ll buy. I don’t hate the 4banger but I am concerned about longevity of a high output 4 cylinder. Chevy went the extra mile and integrated diesel tech into their new 4banger for durability but Toyota hasn’t mentioned any details on their new engine. Time will tell.
Just on principle, I won’t pay a dealer markup. Looks great, but I’ll wait until the market softens. But I know people that want that capability now, and if they’re willing to pay markups, power to them.
@@vincebadagnani181 in my experience, all new vehicles are marked up. Buying new is never a pleasant experience but I hate it less than buying used…. Unless it’s a vintage vehicle that I plan on restoring.
My only complaint is honestly the hybrid system. I just feel like the washboard roads will destroy internals cells of the batteries. Like I hope I am wrong but that amount of shaking and voibrating makes me nervous.
Let's be clear...the Land Cruiser is a vehicle that was NEVER supposed to have a third row. Ever. Some troop carrier configs sort of made sense for the Japanese military back in the day, but that is a whole different configuration. For civilian POV use, this is not primarily a soccer mom tike carrier or similar concrete jungle taxi of whatever sort. It CAN be used for that, but that isn't the focus. That back end is meant for the utility of other gear...and that's assuming you do not take out the second row for the same. 2 rows makes sense. 3 did NOT belong. There are other vehicles for people who need 3 rows.
This is a 4cyl FJ cruiser definitely not a full scale Land Cruiser. The Lc300 Land Cruiser is much larger and much more luxuries there is almost no comparison. I still think it should’ve had the 6 cyl option.
This is technically the Prado, but they killed that nameplate for this generation. I looked on Toyota's global newsroom website and they're calling this just the "Land Cruiser 250 series".
Ideally it should have come with a 1GR-FE engine or a 2GR-FE engine, at least one trim with this engine option. One trim in manual transmission option maybe reinstate the 3rd row seat on those trim models.
In Australia, that isn't a Land Cruiser - it's the smaller Prado. The Land Cruiser now has a V6 diesel (they dropped the V8 with the intro of the new 300 series). The 2.8 diesel in this new Prado is what we have had here for years in the HiLux ute. They are gutless and known for problems. While this new model is a huge improvement on the current Prado we have here, the engine choice is going to cost them a lot of sales.
I went from highly interested to highly UNinterested when I found out you have to pay a RECURRING Subscription Charge for some of the features to continue to work even though you already paid for it when you bought the SUV
Thank you for this review... I only liked the box shape... What is the difference between the new landcruiser and prado? Almost the same... No v8... No 3rd row... Too much plastic for 1958 edition... Clothes seats... Smaller size than previous model...
What a lot of people don’t understand and are making incorrect comparisons. This is the US first LC Prado. The full 300 series we don’t get, this is the “little” brother. Like the Lexus GX current and past. This is the first “base” Prado available in the states and I’m stoked. This is exactly what I wanted, going from my GX460.
Thats why I'm in no hurry to get one. I'll stick with my 2005 LC. Since I'm only using it as my weekend vehicle with no issues, might as well wait and get a GX550 used/certified in the future. I'd rather have the turbo 6 over the 4 pot with hybrid. One more thing that will be an issue(battery) in the future.
Its interesting as an Australian hearing the LC Prado (LC250 in the US) being compared to the LC200. Over here we have the Land Cruiser Prados which are like the little brothers of the Land Cruiser 200s and 300s, and this is the new Prado... So for us it makes total sense that it isnt as big and is a 4cyl, but i can totally see why many US buyers would be very confused lol.
I just bought my wife the First Edition yesterday and the only negative is that there isn't any storage space for the front row. The glove box is small as it's a refrigerator for drinks. There aren't any other cubbies available for storage anywhere else on the center console so we're putting stuff that would go there in the glove box. Other than that, it's an AMAZING vehicle!

I'm sure the aftermarket will have an option available pretty quickly. That'll free up space for an extra tank underneath for longer range touring. I'm sure the Australians will find a solution.
You could, like the 70 Series, enjoy the flimsy Hilux gearbox...... Thank God for that lovely Aisin torque converter automatic.
You can't buy a $55k loaded 4Runner. Those are now $65k with dealer markup.
@@mattclark1278just bought a 4Runner at MSRP many dealers are MRSP dealers
I drive a 2017 turbo diesel GX forturer 4WD in Australia, very basic with cloth trim & manual seats. It has a factory/stock 2 inch lift & rear diff lock. Love it on and off road. 🇦🇺🦘
My dad had the '76 and later '78 Land Cruiser, with the straight 6 and 4 speed manual in both, the only power window was the rear window.
Good times.
Now those were Land Cruisers.
Yes they were,,,, they were bulletproof
New LC things to hate: 1. Non folding rear hatch. 2. Unproven Hybrid powertrain in water/snow/rocks. 3. Lack of availability 4. Dealer markup
“Skid plates on some of them,”. How can any land cruiser not have skid plates?
Dude, you're really good at making content. I feel like a lot of others lack the charisma you have. Subscribed.
Hi Jeff, those prices you mentioned are MSRP. Real world prices are $5-10K more. The new LC's are basically glorified 4Runners. For that, I'd stick with my 5th gen 4Runner.
True I cannot predict what every dealership will sell them at :)
Just don't pay it. With my 4runner I just looked country wide. You can find the normal dealers if you feel like driving.
Try $10k - $20k more. Rav4 Hybrids are currently going $10-$12k **over** MSRP, Sorry Toyota - none of your products are THAT good...

Americans don't compare the land cruiser 200 series with this Land cruiser Prado 250 guys!!! its a prado the midsize LC suv
Not getting the 2.8L diesel engine option. Also what is the price to replace those electric batteries? How long are they warrantied for? Past land cruisers are running strong 20 years later. In 10 years are 2024 Land Cruiser owners gonna be sticker shocked when the dealership say it’s gonna cost $15000 to replace the batteries for that 48ph electric motor? Those are two things I don’t like about it. Plus if the batteries are located in the floor under the cargo mat. If I or anyone wanted to put a Truck Vault or Cargo guide back their doesn’t look like a option.
Love the two tone paint job - reminds me of the FJ Cruiser.
When seeing the different driving modes "Eco" "Sport" etc, why is there a sedan used as the vehicle. WHY not a LC??
It's a Costco Cruzer not a Land Cruzer
Ya, nope. Try again.
With skid plates, sway bar disconnect, and locking center and rear differentials? Only if that’s how the owner chooses to use it.
How about a ssms club cruiser
Truth, land cruisers were top of the line power train, interior, and reliability. This has a poor interior with cheap plastics, a tiny engine being forced through turbos to make up power… that won’t last. Landcruisers were generational, now they’re a 5 year car.
Seeing the direction Toyota is headed in just reaffirms my reasoning for purchasing a 2023 4Runner Limited.
They should sell the 70 series that they get in Australia. Solid axles, diesel, spare tire on rear door.
Do the seats lay flat so I can sleep in it?
Landcruiser’s are for Australia, the Middle East & Africa, not the USA and their warranty claims for incompetence off-road.
I really like the new design, but the hybrid battery third row delete option is disappointing.
Is it me or does this feel like an ad for a Manhattan electronics store from the 1980s?
Why does the dash show a car image - not an SUV - @ 2:03 ?
I am glad they went smaller. They were getting too large for trailing well. The smaller engine will probably not be as reliable. Hopefully it's better than the ecoboost in the Bronco!
Better in the 4cylinder? Yes maybe for the first two years. That is a lot of stress on the 4cyl. The old land cruiser was a 300k to 400k vehicle in mileage life. Doubting this one will do the same.
I’m all in. Saving now. Will go 1958 pulling an OPUS 4. Full ARB aftermarket package. Not concerned about any of these concerns.
That 1958 with whatever you wanna stick to it will look better than anything out there
Toyota put a Man Bun on the Land Cruiser...
I use my third row in my 100 series. Not great but certainly not useless!
I know it’s hard to like a vehicle for $55k that doesn’t come with the proper engine or seats (cloth)
That's not a real Land Cruiser, it's a 4-runner with a four banger, it's made by Toyota but it won't last like a real one. We have a 200 series and I'm willing to bet that the 2024 will have more troubles than ours will over the next 300,000 miles. I'm glad to see that it has a body on frame and not a uniboby but the rest is sad.
with all auto makers its all about our carbon foot print emissions and these models will not be as dependable as the out going models forsure-
Putting the iForce-Max (or the 4-cylinder dog of an engine if you don't get the hybrid) power train in this truck pretty much made it DOA for me.
The name "Land Cruiser" has been a legendary marque, but they've ruined it with this thing, the same way Land Rover did with the new "Defender."
And nobody's worried about the 4Runner going anywhere.
Going from $90k to mid $50k, it is hard to imagine that the new LC retains the same reliability and going anywhere capabilities of the 200 Series.
Bingo
I guess we'll find out right away OR 20 years from now. lol
Its all on perception. If stuff is expensive, doesn't mean its the best. Look at Range Rover LOL!
I actually like the cloth seats. Simple and comfy asl.
Everyone be forgetting the sequoia exists
I prefer the 4cyl as long as it gives better mpg. If I am towing I would buy F250
Jeff, On the positive side, the price came way down and the styling is terrific especially the two tone paint. It is thrilling to see Toyota finally got the memo on providing ample leg
and headroom. 👏👏👏👏

@@Toyotajeff You too dude😉

I’m liking the manual.
This is a substitute for LC 150 (aka Prado). The big LC 200 was replaced by LC300.
From a price perspective, a full-size Land Cruiser that is fully equipped with a turbo engine will cost the same or more than a Toyota Sequoia Capstone.
.lots a love for this land cruiser...the mark up prices will be the biggest problem for this vehicle
Couldn’t agree with you more Jack!
Couldn’t disagree w/ you more Jack! Half the cylinders and half the KDSS system, doesn’t compute to better. As John Vernon (Fletcher) said in ‘The Outlaw Josey Wales, “don’t piss down my back and tell me it’s rainin’”!😂 I’ll stick w/ the global standard and UN vehicle of choice, my ‘16 LC.

i heard the 2024 land cruiser in Canada (North America) only takes premium gas, can i put regular gas in ?
I think they should have put the batteries under the floor, and put the spare on the rear.
Toyota isn’t in the business to sell one off configurations. Those would sell terribly.

I’d miss the split tailgate I love now on my 1999 LC.

@@redrider7730 thank you
If Toyota doesn’t drastically increase their production capacities those who want one will be paying huge markups for the foreseeable future.
Yes the 4 cylinder turbo is not ideal. I’m sure it was a cost cutting measure?
What's the safety rating?
I want to know if the bed is flat for sleeping with the back seats folded up.
