I gotta say for my money I think the Land Cruiser is MUCH better looking than the new 4-runner. Full disclosure I've got my name down for a GX550 so I'm probably biased.
@@dannelson1982 Just sticker. No additional adjustment. Offered me an Overtrail + that was loaded for just under $85, but there are about 4,500 in things I don't want on that build. So I'm waiting for an update on the next shipment.
I don't know how other people feel. But I really like the round head light version better. Even though the square light I think is on the higher trims.
When the "back to basics" lowest tier model starts at $58,000 with cloth seats, we've missed the mark. Pricing on cars is beyond ridiculous and anyone who pays new car market price or MORE is a fool.
And it probably looks like the usual nonsporty at all basic models ... totally overpriced. These types of vehicles used to be 30-45k tops not even ten years ago.. i dont understand how vehicles doubled in price in that short of time... makes no sense
Well, you can thank your friend inflation for that. Over the past 10 years, cost of goods have risen over 30%, which would put the Land Cruiser @ around 40K 10 years ago. @@dertythegrower
It doesn’t have a third row because of the hybrid battery. The 4Runners that have a third row are gas only and so is the Lexus GX. I will say, I actually like that it has vents in the back for dogs. And I like that it has cup holders and USB plugs if you are using the cargo area to camp, etc.
There are a lot of off-road trails in places like California that close if it gets too wet because they don't want the trails to get wrecked by off-road vehicles. I am sure it would have been fine in the mud.

Actually Doug, the Land Cruiser hasn't died; the 300 Series is alive and well, sold everywhere else but the United States. You're just getting a LC Prado, which has been the “baby” LC since the 80s with the 70 Series, succeeded by the 90, 120, 150 and now the 250.
It’s funny how before these Prados were all sold internationally but the U.S. while we got the full size LC and now it flipped flopped. Now we got the Prado while the real LC is being sold internationally but the U.S 😂😭
@@mylesavan4024 Well, I wouldn't call the LC a flop considering it was sold in the US since the 60 Series. But I guess that the 200 Series sales were way below tolerable levels. Having two other massive 7-row SUVs (Sequoia & Highlander) didn't help either.
The lack of bloated body lines, extra screens, and interior fanfare is exactly what I’d want from a rugged Toyota SUV. The new 4Runners’ interior looks like a the fever dream of a 12-year-old Transformer fanboy. The Land Cruiser design language is more restrained and mature.

I agree with the styling. The 4runner looks cool but a little juvenile for me. The value of the 4runner is that is cheaper for the same engine, more seating and I do think the interior is nicer. I don’t mind the 4cyl engine in the 4runner but this start at 60k!! Stripped down. It should have at least the same engine as the GX.
This is done on purpose. The 4runner's chief engineer explained how the 4runner is designed to attract a younger more outdoorsy type of buyer meanwhile the LC attracts a more mature crowd.
The Land Cruiser only came back like this in North America and Europe, every other country gets the actual full size Land Cruiser (the 300 series). You can get that with either a 3.3 turbodiesel V6, a 4.0 V6 (the same 1GR-FE as the outgoing 4Runner), and the same 3.5 twin turbo V6 as the LX600. BTW, the Lexus GX doesn't have a 4 cylinder engine, it has never used one.
For countries that already got the 300 Land Cruiser, this will be sold as Land Cruiser Prado or as Lexus GX (I mean, it’s a Prado, J250, the successor to the J150 Prado. Just so happens in NA and EU it replace the previous flagship Land Cruiser).
@roxdbox in Nigeria we only get the 300 series Land Cruiser. The only Land Cruiser Prado models available here are the old J150 models. Even those 300 series models are very rare and are more commonly seen among government officials. Edit: I forgot to mention, we also get the 70 series, but it's also very rare, mostly used in the military and by some construction companies (most others just use the J120 or the Mitsubishi Pajero, or the Hilux). That one only gets the 1GR-FE V6.
Actually it's even more confusing in my country. I live in Cambodia and although Toyota only sells LC300 officially here, I've seen dealers accept order/sell both the new GX and the J250 and their prices are confusing as the new GX costs almost if not more than the new GR LC300 and the used LC300 is similar in price to the new J250.

In Australia, the model reviewed here is called the LandCruiser Prado and will be arriving soon. We also have the new 300 series LandCruiser (3.3L V6 Diesel) and the more rugged 70 series (4.5L V8 Diesel) still for sale. All are incredibly popular here
Majority are owned by tradies who cant actually afford them and are never taken off road because they're worth too much and the owner is too busy working to pay it off. But yes they are cool cars.
@@billamota Both the V8 and the 4cyl are offered concurrently at the moment, though orders for the V8 may still be closed due to a backlog of demand. There's also talk of the V8 potentially going away later on, but for now the V8 is still offered for the 2024 model year.
I was checking the comments to see if anyone had brough it up, it's not the successor for the land cruiser LC200, as you said in latin america it's named land cruiser prado and the series would be the LC250, the previous ones were the LC150 and LC95 sharing its platform with the lexus GX as the LC300 shares the platform with the lexus LX

I think it's more about the fact that some of these cars aren't available in all markets, for example in Saudi Arabia this land cruiser is called the Prado and there is a 300 series land cruiser that isn't sold in america but the 4Runner isnt available in saudi arabia, but there is a different car called the fortuner

He has a very old video of him talking about how hard it is for him to film videos outdoors. A lot of sounds,people walking in and all of that. So I think he always wanted to do it indoors and didn’t have the facilities till now.
I love the trend of white roofs lately (harkening back to the 50s/60s, and more recently Minis and the Ford Flex) ... and I appreciate they gave it a proper transition detail, instead of the sloppy paint line seen on the Hyundai Venue. That car makes my eye twitch.
Yeah. It is. FJ Cruiser is based on the previosu J120/J150 Prado. Since this is the successor to that J150 Prado, it’s also the (spiritual) successor to FJ Cruiser.
The Prado always had a bonus of being able to be in low range without locking the centre diff...reversing boats or trailers or steep winding high grip scenarios it was always a brilliant feature.
The two headlight option harks back to the 60 Sereis Land Cruiser. Where it was offered (in Australia anyway) in circular headlights for the lower variants, and for the top of the range variant, a quad-rectangle headlights.
I like the fact that, Doug said, it doesn’t have Land Cruiser written anywhere, except floor mats, ( a few moments later )😂 showing the rear sit climate controls and right above it, at the end of the armrest, it is a Land Cruiser logo!😂
My Uncle got two 300 Series Proper Landcruiser... I've had a 105 Landcruiser, and the Landcruiser Prado...learned to drive in the original Prado. But they took the Spare wheel off the back door yet even the real Cruiser always had the spare underneath.... I like what Toyota have done though, we don't get a 4 runner....but we get the 70 series.

There’s no third row because of the hybrid battery pack which raises the floor. Same with the 4 runner. You can get a third row but only if you opt for the non hybrid version of the 2.4 engine

This isnt the real Land Cruiser, that is the LC300 which we get every where else in the world, this is the new Prado which is why there is all the confusion on the toyota line up
Im going to go out on a limb here and say they that they do more durability and endurance testing with the Land Cruiser name plate, thats probably where the extra cost comes from. I could be wrong though. I don't really care for three rows, the lack of a 3rd row is a bonus for me.

This is a 250 series Land cruiser Prado which is a succesor to the 150 series Land cruiser Prado. And LC prados were never offered with a V8. The big daddy Land cruiser involes LC80 ,LC100, LC200 and LC300. You cannot compare a land cruiser prado with a land cruiser as prado is the smaller version of the land cruiser
People in north America don't care because all they want is a SUV with extremely off road capability and excellent tech power performance torque mpg comfort. Each product is received differently in many markets. So please don't try to advise other what to compare

I just cannot forgive Doug's explanation of model heritage line, the line was splitted just after the LC60, giving birth to the LC 80 (which was the flagship) and the LC70 (slightly smaller, not focused on luxury but in toughness instead), then that line splitted once again, the LC90 was born while the 70 remained under production (and it is still on sale today). After the 90 the 120 came and then the 150, this LC model is the replacement for THAT line, also called Prado in some markets, not for the 80, 100, 200 and 300 Line.
26:55 That's the thing-you can. Because the Land Cruiser 300 series (which the rest of the world gets) has that Sequoia V6. In place of the 300 series, you guys got the Lexus LX 600 instead. And I kinda expected you to call that vehicle back in this vid knowing you've reviewed the LC 300 before lol The reason why this "Land Cruiser" is slotted with the 4Runner and the GX is because it isn't the actual big ball Land Cruiser you guys know and love. This is the Land Cruiser Prado (or the 250 series.) and it has always been the Lexus GX ever since the 120 series. The Prado is also the "light duty" series of the flagship LC, and has always been slotted with the 4Runner ever since it became a Tacoma-based SUV as opposed to the first two generations which were based on the Hilux/Pickup.
@@sammymaestro7642 I think the confusion comes from "why do I choose this over the 4Runner?" "What's the biggest differentiation?" deep down, besides styling. For example you've got the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee - both go offroad, but some would say the Wrangler does more extreme offroading, while the GC gives you more elegance and luxury while offroading, and better on-road dynamics. It's a bit muddy on the Toyota side.

I am glad there is no third row of seats pushed on us by default. It would have been good to give it as an option though. I prefer the LC over the 4Runner.
I prefer the look for the LC over 4Runner too. I think the differentiator between the LC and 4Runner will be the at $60k the LC comes with a lot of the gear you have to option on 4Runner. But, the cheaper one having a third row option seems odd.
Best memories of my childhood were riding in the boot of our dark green Opel Kadett Caravan (wagon). A tiny car by today's standards. It would have been nice to have USB ports back there, but my Tandy walkman (with 3-band radio and really fast winding, faster than your studio deck) didn't take a cable, it took 4x 1.2 V rechargeable batteries. I was "green" and "connected" before it was cool. I received radio stations multiple countries away with that walkman. All it took was a 5 meter headphone extension cable.
For about the same price, I would definitely go with a base GX550 with the 3.4L twin turbo V6 over a 4 cyl hybrid LC. Land Cruiser $63,345 | GX550 Premium $64,250
@@mikeandkerryak for now since it's new, may need to travel to get one at MSRP or wait a year. I did that during COVID when I bought a Duramax suburban. One way plane ticket and drive it back home 500 miles.
Absolutely. The GX has a better warranty, better paint, more power, better cargo space, way more features, nicer interior....there's no reason for the land cruiser to exist at all.
The GX does not get most of the off road tech in the LC unless you get the Overtrail for $10k more. That is the trade off. For street only, the GX is definitely better though.
I totally get the "positioning". Its more subdued and adult. I like the new top spec 4Runner, especially the performance suspension. But now in my mid 40s, this is what I want. Something more adult, and classic looking. Plus NOT EVERYTHING NEEDS A 40 INCH SCREEN! I much prefer the LCs smaller screen. Its all the benefits of the new 4Runner in a more sedate look. I do wish the Trailer Hunter suspension was available tho
I feel the same way but I feel like they missed an opportunity to turn the 4runner into a smaller wheelbase small sized SUV with a 2-door version. That would have made it sit in a totally different spot in the lineup and not compete with the land cruiser.

I have to disagree with Doug on the looks. I think the new Landcruiser looks way more timeless. This is more akin to the FJ for me im terms of positioning for Toyota. Even a few of these on the road sells the Toyota brand in the "Off Road Capable" department.
If you live in Lego world maybe. The mirrors and front end ain’t doing it any justice. The tundra and sequoia are the only good looking Toyotas anymore.

Doug, I usually like your reviews. This was no exception but for a couple of things. The third row in the 4 runner, I just traded, was useless for me. Never not once used it. So, you can see the joy I felt when I looked into the Land Cruiser rear. Yes just space. I would have loved the split tail gate but the back glass works so much better than the roller glass on the 4runner as per my experience. Power is incredible compared to the 23 4runner I just traded. So I have the base 1958 model now and have had a lift and over sized tire/wheel combo installed. I am so loving this and has been a dream of mine for so long to have. So the second part is actually, I am 6'6" and am so very comfortable in the land cruiser compared to the super tight and cramped up r runner. So happy with my "upgrade" the the Land Cruiser. Thanks for all you reviewing skills you were able to completely highlight many of my all time favorite vehicles great features. Keep up the great work, careful to be unbiased and rock on brother!

I've never understood why auto companies haven't jumped on hybrid diesel technology. Incredible mileage, great grunt for SUVs, and now nearly silent. Seems like the perfect fit.
In Australia this land cruiser comes with a 2.8L diesel hybrid engine. The US and all other markets just don't get it. Here in the UK (and I believe the rest of Europe) we only get the regular non hybrid 2.8L diesel. No other engines only that derv
@@chester0608ye That's a non sequiter you just spit out. VW cheated on a pure diesel engine emission system, but their engines were still excellent. Diesel hybrids are a different propulsion system that are extremely low emission, provide high mileage, excellent reliablilty and plenty of torque. Thanks to others here who didn't simply vomit out CNN/MSNBC garbage.
The new Land Cruiser is a handsome design. That 4Runner is just ridiculous. But to each their own. I get the point though. The two do seem to be stepping on each other’s toes.
That space where the third row would be is actually where the hybrid battery is located and in other markets where the hybrid engine is not available, the third row is there.
There is no Sequoia or 4Runner in Europe/UK. The Land Cruiser is the only 4x4 by toyota here. Sequoia and 4Runner are US only model (someone correct me). The Land Cruiser is the Toyota 4x4 for the rest of the World. And the rest of the world is indeed very pleased to have Land Cruiser back.

Just like VW Touareg is discontinued in US, it seems like a luxury higher-end car with a regular car brand badge does not work. In contrast, Lexus LX, technically the same car as LC300, sells extremely well at 130k+ usd

I'm sure it's annoying to read the comments but the sound (half the video) is so much better when these are filmed outdoors. Please, spend the same money you did on lighting and camera equipment on sound deadening and or diffusing panels. Half of the video is sound and you're just ignoring it. Enjoying the new Cars and Bids content btw.
Garage videos are unwatchable due to sound reflections. A couple of freestanding fabric wrapped sound deadening insulted panels would be an inexpensive solution that would improve sound quality drastically. I think it’s kind of a game maybe, how little can I spend on tech (cheap tripod, basic camera, no slider shots, minimum sound recording devices) and still maintain a high level of viewership. The formula is working but enough people have mentioned sound that’s it may be worth the $278 in fabric, insulation, strapping, a box of screws and some staples to address it. 😂
200 will probably only go up in value since the new LC is prado based and "not a real landcruiser" whatever that means. the 200 is antiquated in looks and technology that's why it hardly sold till the end in the US but there will always be someone wanting that V8, overbuilt simpleness.
Sorry, but I strongly feel that this looks WAY better than the new 4Runner. I’m sure it will grow on me, but the new 4Runner looks awkward and bloated to me.
Toyota is japanese quality as its finest. The reliability. That is what makes me a Toyota fan. American cars or european cars isn't as good as Toyota regarding reliability and they're affordable (which Audi, BMW, Mercedes isn't).
Who cares about Doug opinion. Car and driver ranked the new land cruiser 6th with 9.5 out 10. That's 13 places better than the wrangler while also been above the twin bronco models
Worth noting. Landcruiser is no 3rd row, in america where we only have the turbo hybrid. In the UK and Europe where a Diesel option exists, they have the fold up 3rd row. Guess the hybrid batteries are stealing that space in the US model.
I thing Doug is mixing up land cruisers, we had 100, 200 and newest is 300, then we had 90,120, 150 and finally 250 (the one hes reviewing), he is constantly comapreing this one to the 200 and 300 which isnt the same car, its like comparing new bmw 3 to old bmw 7..
Even without a 3rd row, all the phantom 3rd row stuff is useful. In our Pilot the 3rd row stays down 98% of the time, but I keep detailing products in the cupholders, and charge flashlights & bluetooth speakers. The climate control is great for our best friends.
Doug. You say the hitch cover looks like a diaper. I think Toyota would rather you use tough, masculine comparisons, like "This truck looks like it's wearing a HUGE CUP." Who needs 'brass balls' trailer hitch covers. This one's FACTORY!
Absolutely, the new US market Land Cruiser makes no sense. In the rest of the world, it makes sense because the Prado has a diesel engine; if you want a gas engine you have the 4runner option. I suppose if you want a car equivalent to the Land Cruiser 300, you should opt for the Lexus LX. The Lexus GX has always been built on the Prado platform, which is now marketed in America as the Land Cruiser.
How does he not know that this is actually a Prado, except for in US? It is not the new LandCruiser, the LC300 is the new LandCruiser, which answers so many of his questions about it.
You have got it all wrong, this is not that land cruiser, it is actually LC Prado being called as Land Cruiser 250 for the American market, the Land Cruiser history showed belongs to the Lc 300, which Toyota has decided not to sell in America
Why's he so obsessed with a third row? Extra weight, less cargo space, worse rearward visibility. People will rarely sit back there, and when then do they'll be cramped. Buy a minivan or a GX or a Limited 4Runner if you want a third row.
But I want to off-road with all. of my friends. Some people have a lot of friends and like to go off roading. Why wouldn't you want that in the new land cruiser? All the old ones had that same ability.
Totally agree. Literally everyone who actually goes camping and off-roading removes the 3rd row or just never uses it. I think the people crying about it are posers; like off-roading to them is a gravel maintained road.
Im guessing the soccer mum market is important, to be able to pick up the kids and the kids friends to take to sport. Families with 4 kids, probably also important to have the ability to carry.
Hi Doug. Well, in Europe we don't have the Toyota SEQUOIA or 4Runner. What we have in the matter of SUVs is: Toyota RAV4, Toyota Highlander, Toyota Land Cruiser 150, Toyota Hilux, and Toyota Land Cruiser 250 (this is presented here). So the Toyota lineup is different by each continent I guess...
In my opinion, it is the opposite. It's the 4Runner that is overdesigned, almost cartoonish. Also, this new Land Cruiser is not replacing the old V8 Land Cruiser. It replaces the Land Cruiser Prado. In other countries, Toyota still offers the Land Cruiser 300 series.
No no no, 4runner interior looks transformer-ish, lego-ish and childish. Land Cruiser looks solid, not even for comparison. Nobody needs a living room size TV in car, nobody needs to be remembered what brand they are driving, etc.
I also don't understand Toyota's model line up. I prefer the looks of the Land Cruiser, but $58k starting is high. I dont need crazy off-road capability - so the mid-level 4Runner would prob work out. I've owned 2 4Runners and they have been solid. Either way - I'm not buying new, so I may change my mind in a few years.

The reason Toyota has the Land Cruiser in their current fleet is because there’s a demographic of people who like things more simple and old school feel. The dash on the 4Runner can be too aggressive for people that want a more relaxed, but familiar. Toyota really does have a car for everyone. 👍

I gotta say for my money I think the Land Cruiser is MUCH better looking than the new 4-runner. Full disclosure I've got my name down for a GX550 so I'm probably biased.

It doesn’t have a third row because of the hybrid battery. The 4Runners that have a third row are gas only and so is the Lexus GX. I will say, I actually like that it has vents in the back for dogs. And I like that it has cup holders and USB plugs if you are using the cargo area to camp, etc.
Also if you go out door and open the rear door you are gonna keep your cups there and charge while sitting.

There are a lot of off-road trails in places like California that close if it gets too wet because they don't want the trails to get wrecked by off-road vehicles. I am sure it would have been fine in the mud.

You're just getting a LC Prado, which has been the “baby” LC since the 80s with the 70 Series, succeeded by the 90, 120, 150 and now the 250.

The lack of bloated body lines, extra screens, and interior fanfare is exactly what I’d want from a rugged Toyota SUV. The new 4Runners’ interior looks like a the fever dream of a 12-year-old Transformer fanboy. The Land Cruiser design language is more restrained and mature.

I agree with the styling. The 4runner looks cool but a little juvenile for me. The value of the 4runner is that is cheaper for the same engine, more seating and I do think the interior is nicer. I don’t mind the 4cyl engine in the 4runner but this start at 60k!! Stripped down. It should have at least the same engine as the GX.
This is done on purpose. The 4runner's chief engineer explained how the 4runner is designed to attract a younger more outdoorsy type of buyer meanwhile the LC attracts a more mature crowd.
The Land Cruiser only came back like this in North America and Europe, every other country gets the actual full size Land Cruiser (the 300 series). You can get that with either a 3.3 turbodiesel V6, a 4.0 V6 (the same 1GR-FE as the outgoing 4Runner), and the same 3.5 twin turbo V6 as the LX600. BTW, the Lexus GX doesn't have a 4 cylinder engine, it has never used one.
For countries that already got the 300 Land Cruiser, this will be sold as Land Cruiser Prado or as Lexus GX (I mean, it’s a Prado, J250, the successor to the J150 Prado. Just so happens in NA and EU it replace the previous flagship Land Cruiser).
@roxdbox in Nigeria we only get the 300 series Land Cruiser. The only Land Cruiser Prado models available here are the old J150 models. Even those 300 series models are very rare and are more commonly seen among government officials. Edit: I forgot to mention, we also get the 70 series, but it's also very rare, mostly used in the military and by some construction companies (most others just use the J120 or the Mitsubishi Pajero, or the Hilux). That one only gets the 1GR-FE V6.
Actually it's even more confusing in my country. I live in Cambodia and although Toyota only sells LC300 officially here, I've seen dealers accept order/sell both the new GX and the J250 and their prices are confusing as the new GX costs almost if not more than the new GR LC300 and the used LC300 is similar in price to the new J250.

In Australia, the model reviewed here is called the LandCruiser Prado and will be arriving soon. We also have the new 300 series LandCruiser (3.3L V6 Diesel) and the more rugged 70 series (4.5L V8 Diesel) still for sale. All are incredibly popular here

Majority are owned by tradies who cant actually afford them and are never taken off road because they're worth too much and the owner is too busy working to pay it off. But yes they are cool cars.
@@billamota Both the V8 and the 4cyl are offered concurrently at the moment, though orders for the V8 may still be closed due to a backlog of demand. There's also talk of the V8 potentially going away later on, but for now the V8 is still offered for the 2024 model year.

I think it's more about the fact that some of these cars aren't available in all markets, for example in Saudi Arabia this land cruiser is called the Prado and there is a 300 series land cruiser that isn't sold in america but the 4Runner isnt available in saudi arabia, but there is a different car called the fortuner

The Prado always had a bonus of being able to be in low range without locking the centre diff...reversing boats or trailers or steep winding high grip scenarios it was always a brilliant feature.
The two headlight option harks back to the 60 Sereis Land Cruiser. Where it was offered (in Australia anyway) in circular headlights for the lower variants, and for the top of the range variant, a quad-rectangle headlights.
I like the fact that, Doug said, it doesn’t have Land Cruiser written anywhere, except floor mats, ( a few moments later )😂 showing the rear sit climate controls and right above it, at the end of the armrest, it is a Land Cruiser logo!😂

My Uncle got two 300 Series Proper Landcruiser... I've had a 105 Landcruiser, and the Landcruiser Prado...learned to drive in the original Prado. But they took the Spare wheel off the back door yet even the real Cruiser always had the spare underneath....

Im going to go out on a limb here and say they that they do more durability and endurance testing with the Land Cruiser name plate, thats probably where the extra cost comes from. I could be wrong though.

This is a 250 series Land cruiser Prado which is a succesor to the 150 series Land cruiser Prado. And LC prados were never offered with a V8. The big daddy Land cruiser involes LC80 ,LC100, LC200 and LC300. You cannot compare a land cruiser prado with a land cruiser as prado is the smaller version of the land cruiser
People in north America don't care because all they want is a SUV with extremely off road capability and excellent tech power performance torque mpg comfort. Each product is received differently in many markets. So please don't try to advise other what to compare

I just cannot forgive Doug's explanation of model heritage line, the line was splitted just after the LC60, giving birth to the LC 80 (which was the flagship) and the LC70 (slightly smaller, not focused on luxury but in toughness instead), then that line splitted once again, the LC90 was born while the 70 remained under production (and it is still on sale today). After the 90 the 120 came and then the 150, this LC model is the replacement for THAT line, also called Prado in some markets, not for the 80, 100, 200 and 300 Line.

The reason why this "Land Cruiser" is slotted with the 4Runner and the GX is because it isn't the actual big ball Land Cruiser you guys know and love. This is the Land Cruiser Prado (or the 250 series.) and it has always been the Lexus GX ever since the 120 series. The Prado is also the "light duty" series of the flagship LC, and has always been slotted with the 4Runner ever since it became a Tacoma-based SUV as opposed to the first two generations which were based on the Hilux/Pickup.
Sequoia Turbo LX has lighter weight than Land Cruiser 2024.

For example you've got the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee - both go offroad, but some would say the Wrangler does more extreme offroading, while the GC gives you more elegance and luxury while offroading, and better on-road dynamics. It's a bit muddy on the Toyota side.

I am glad there is no third row of seats pushed on us by default. It would have been good to give it as an option though. I prefer the LC over the 4Runner.
I prefer the look for the LC over 4Runner too. I think the differentiator between the LC and 4Runner will be the at $60k the LC comes with a lot of the gear you have to option on 4Runner. But, the cheaper one having a third row option seems odd.
Best memories of my childhood were riding in the boot of our dark green Opel Kadett Caravan (wagon). A tiny car by today's standards.
It would have been nice to have USB ports back there, but my Tandy walkman (with 3-band radio and really fast winding, faster than your studio deck) didn't take a cable, it took 4x 1.2 V rechargeable batteries. I was "green" and "connected" before it was cool. I received radio stations multiple countries away with that walkman. All it took was a 5 meter headphone extension cable.

Absolutely. The GX has a better warranty, better paint, more power, better cargo space, way more features, nicer interior....there's no reason for the land cruiser to exist at all.
The GX does not get most of the off road tech in the LC unless you get the Overtrail for $10k more. That is the trade off. For street only, the GX is definitely better though.
I totally get the "positioning". Its more subdued and adult. I like the new top spec 4Runner, especially the performance suspension. But now in my mid 40s, this is what I want. Something more adult, and classic looking. Plus NOT EVERYTHING NEEDS A 40 INCH SCREEN! I much prefer the LCs smaller screen. Its all the benefits of the new 4Runner in a more sedate look. I do wish the Trailer Hunter suspension was available tho
I feel the same way but I feel like they missed an opportunity to turn the 4runner into a smaller wheelbase small sized SUV with a 2-door version. That would have made it sit in a totally different spot in the lineup and not compete with the land cruiser.

I have to disagree with Doug on the looks. I think the new Landcruiser looks way more timeless. This is more akin to the FJ for me im terms of positioning for Toyota. Even a few of these on the road sells the Toyota brand in the "Off Road Capable" department.

If you live in Lego world maybe. The mirrors and front end ain’t doing it any justice. The tundra and sequoia are the only good looking Toyotas anymore.

Doug, I usually like your reviews. This was no exception but for a couple of things. The third row in the 4 runner, I just traded, was useless for me. Never not once used it. So, you can see the joy I felt when I looked into the Land Cruiser rear. Yes just space. I would have loved the split tail gate but the back glass works so much better than the roller glass on the 4runner as per my experience.
Power is incredible compared to the 23 4runner I just traded. So I have the base 1958 model now and have had a lift and over sized tire/wheel combo installed. I am so loving this and has been a dream of mine for so long to have. So the second part is actually, I am 6'6" and am so very comfortable in the land cruiser compared to the super tight and cramped up r runner. So happy with my "upgrade" the the Land Cruiser. Thanks for all you reviewing skills you were able to completely highlight many of my all time favorite vehicles great features. Keep up the great work, careful to be unbiased and rock on brother!

I've never understood why auto companies haven't jumped on hybrid diesel technology. Incredible mileage, great grunt for SUVs, and now nearly silent. Seems like the perfect fit.

Diesel hybrids are a different propulsion system that are extremely low emission, provide high mileage, excellent reliablilty and plenty of torque. The new Land Cruiser is a handsome design. That 4Runner is just ridiculous. But to each their own. I get the point though. The two do seem to be stepping on each other’s toes.
4Runners have been getting progressively uglier with each new generation.

The rear cup holders, AC etc. can be used for camping. The vehicle is for outdoor adventures, not hauling 7 people around
That space where the third row would be is actually where the hybrid battery is located and in other markets where the hybrid engine is not available, the third row is there.
There is no Sequoia or 4Runner in Europe/UK. The Land Cruiser is the only 4x4 by toyota here. Sequoia and 4Runner are US only model (someone correct me). The Land Cruiser is the Toyota 4x4 for the rest of the World. And the rest of the world is indeed very pleased to have Land Cruiser back.
rest of the world (in most countries) already have land cruiser 300, and this is a successor of smaller land cruisrr prado. So it isn't really having land cruiser "back"

@shrayesraman5192 Toyota's association is a bit of a lower end in the US compared to the rest of the world. Just like VW Touareg is discontinued in US, it seems like a luxury higher-end car with a regular car brand badge does not work. In contrast, Lexus LX, technically the same car as LC300, sells extremely well at 130k+ usd

It doesn't need the gimmicks its a work truck. My parents business has a 150 series with almost 700k km and it's still going.
Not everything has to be 3 row. It's good to have a 2 row option.

I'm sure it's annoying to read the comments but the sound (half the video) is so much better when these are filmed outdoors.
Please, spend the same money you did on lighting and camera equipment on sound deadening and or diffusing panels. Half of the video is sound and you're just ignoring it.

Garage videos are unwatchable due to sound reflections. A couple of freestanding fabric wrapped sound deadening insulted panels would be an inexpensive solution that would improve sound quality drastically. I think it’s kind of a game maybe, how little can I spend on tech (cheap tripod, basic camera, no slider shots, minimum sound recording devices) and still maintain a high level of viewership. The formula is working but enough people have mentioned sound that’s it may be worth the $278 in fabric, insulation, strapping, a box of screws and some staples to address it. 😂
I can't wait till these flood the market and I can pick up a Used stealth wealth mom's 200 series LC
200 will probably only go up in value since the new LC is prado based and "not a real landcruiser" whatever that means. the 200 is antiquated in looks and technology that's why it hardly sold till the end in the US but there will always be someone wanting that V8, overbuilt simpleness.

Sorry, but I strongly feel that this looks WAY better than the new 4Runner. I’m sure it will grow on me, but the new 4Runner looks awkward and bloated to me.
Toyota is japanese quality as its finest. The reliability. That is what makes me a Toyota fan. American cars or european cars isn't as good as Toyota regarding reliability and they're affordable (which Audi, BMW, Mercedes isn't).
Landcruiser = overland/grown-up 4Runner=off-road park/fun dad vibe

Who cares about Doug opinion. Car and driver ranked the new land cruiser 6th with 9.5 out 10. That's 13 places better than the wrangler while also been above the twin bronco models

Worth noting. Landcruiser is no 3rd row, in america where we only have the turbo hybrid. In the UK and Europe where a Diesel option exists, they have the fold up 3rd row. Guess the hybrid batteries are stealing that space in the US model.
Some people don't care about EV, or FSD, they just prefer to drive.........

I thing Doug is mixing up land cruisers, we had 100, 200 and newest is 300, then we had 90,120, 150 and finally 250 (the one hes reviewing), he is constantly comapreing this one to the 200 and 300 which isnt the same car, its like comparing new bmw 3 to old bmw 7..
Even without a 3rd row, all the phantom 3rd row stuff is useful. In our Pilot the 3rd row stays down 98% of the time, but I keep detailing products in the cupholders, and charge flashlights & bluetooth speakers. The climate control is great for our best friends.

Absolutely, the new US market Land Cruiser makes no sense. In the rest of the world, it makes sense because the Prado has a diesel engine; if you want a gas engine you have the 4runner option. I suppose if you want a car equivalent to the Land Cruiser 300, you should opt for the Lexus LX. The Lexus GX has always been built on the Prado platform, which is now marketed in America as the Land Cruiser.
How does he not know that this is actually a Prado, except for in US? It is not the new LandCruiser, the LC300 is the new LandCruiser, which answers so many of his questions about it.

You have got it all wrong, this is not that land cruiser, it is actually LC Prado being called as Land Cruiser 250 for the American market, the Land Cruiser history showed belongs to the Lc 300, which Toyota has decided not to sell in America
Why's he so obsessed with a third row? Extra weight, less cargo space, worse rearward visibility. People will rarely sit back there, and when then do they'll be cramped. Buy a minivan or a GX or a Limited 4Runner if you want a third row.

Totally agree. Literally everyone who actually goes camping and off-roading removes the 3rd row or just never uses it.
I think the people crying about it are posers; like off-roading to them is a gravel maintained road.
Im guessing the soccer mum market is important, to be able to pick up the kids and the kids friends to take to sport. Families with 4 kids, probably also important to have the ability to carry.

Hi Doug. Well, in Europe we don't have the Toyota SEQUOIA or 4Runner. What we have in the matter of SUVs is: Toyota RAV4, Toyota Highlander, Toyota Land Cruiser 150, Toyota Hilux, and Toyota Land Cruiser 250 (this is presented here). So the Toyota lineup is different by each continent I guess...
In my opinion, it is the opposite. It's the 4Runner that is overdesigned, almost cartoonish. Also, this new Land Cruiser is not replacing the old V8 Land Cruiser. It replaces the Land Cruiser Prado. In other countries, Toyota still offers the Land Cruiser 300 series.
This Model replaces the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, Not the LC200. The LC300 is continued in the middle east an Oceania but not in the US.

Doug, the 4Runner has always been for the US market and Land Cruiser is for everywhere else and will do very well in those countries.
No no no, 4runner interior looks transformer-ish, lego-ish and childish.
Land Cruiser looks solid, not even for comparison. Nobody needs a living room size TV in car, nobody needs to be remembered what brand they are driving, etc.
I also don't understand Toyota's model line up. I prefer the looks of the Land Cruiser, but $58k starting is high. I dont need crazy off-road capability - so the mid-level 4Runner would prob work out. I've owned 2 4Runners and they have been solid. Either way - I'm not buying new, so I may change my mind in a few years.
If you don't care about off roading, you should probably be looking at a highlander.

The reason Toyota has the Land Cruiser in their current fleet is because there’s a demographic of people who like things more simple and old school feel. The dash on the 4Runner can be too aggressive for people that want a more relaxed, but familiar. Toyota really does have a car for everyone. 👍

Countries which do get the bigger 300 series gets the smaller one as "Land Cruiser Prado". (Australia, Middle East, Africa etc)
Countries which don’t get the 300 series get the Land Cruiser Prado named as "Land Cruiser" only (America, Europe and Israel)
The Prado is and always has been a Land Cruiser 150/250. It’s one of the best off roaders in the world.
In Europe we get de round headlights only on the "FIRST EDITION" LC which is strictly limited to 3000 vehicles and they will be fully loaded. So the opposite of "entry level"...
