Despite their hate towards each other, they still respect each other, and they want to settle the score once and for all. It will do them no honor if they cheat.
@@neththeobnoxioussponge8929 To me it looks like Hideo Kojima watched some Hulk Hogan match re-runs when writing this scene.. Pretty sure if transcripts of what he told the animators to put in this scene would be "this WWE match, I want it in the game"
What's amazing about this scene and boss fight isn't really the fight itself. It's just the context of everything. We've seen these two duke it out in the past, and often we'd think how awesome it was watching them battle, how cool it is to be a badass like Snake, taking out everything in his path to save the world. And initially that's how it seems here too. But then we get partway through, the two scream at each other, the sad music starts playing, and we realize what's actually happening here. These are two broken men. Broken by their genetics, by their purposes, by their very existence. No matter how much they might want to, they cannot stop fighting. Because they are predisposed to hating each other even when they really don't, and they are designed specifically to be machines of war even when they want to live in peace. There is nothing left for them to do but "settle a score" that really amounts to little more than sibling rivalry. It doesn't serve a purpose except to give them an excuse to keep doing what they were "programmed" to do. That's why they don't even try to hog all the nanomachines in those tubes. They make a show of trying to in some instances, but really, they're just looking for ways to keep going. If that means stealing some, they will, and if that means giving some to the other, they will. It's admirable--even respectable--and yet it is one of the most depressing things imaginable. It's not even easy to tell if someone can WIN this fight, because once the battle is over, their whole purpose for existing is gone. Will they be free, or will they be lost? Perhaps Hideo Kojima is trying to use them as an analogy for war, but personally, I prefer to think it's just the inevitable result of the journey these characters have been on. It's really incredible stuff. Metal Gear Solid has always been overwritten with repetitive dialogue, wacky absurd scenarios, and so many cutscenes it barely feels like you're playing a game, but moments like these remind me why it's always been worth it. It's a shame the series is now dead, though I blame that partially on Kojima himself since he's apparently notorious for being arrogant. Let's hope Death Stranding can serve as a worthy follow-up.
I think the way the fight was choreographed was so that around 12:30 the player does not get a sense of satisfaction from defeating Liquid, and it just becomes a pathetic display of two tired dogs of war biting each others tails. kojima wanted to have snake kill himself at the end of the game, but the other members of the studio disagreed with him saying it would be a too depressing tone to end the game.
and the most ironic thing in this fight is, eventhough ocelot is just acting like liquid, eventhough he is just being his doppelganger, he too has a score to settle with solid. thats why ocelot started acting more like his true self in his fight, he woke up in his fight.
This whole war was reduced from their armies to only the two of them because while the armies from both sides help each other, both Snake and Ocelot decided to fight to settle the score, it's really great that they wanted a fair battle as if winning by cheating is denying them the victory they want.
Possibly the greatest fight scene in a video game. It perfectly directs their eternal fight, their respect for each other, who they are, the snake eater theme starts playing, the music changes, its just so epic.
Not really the best. For starters, a good fight scene would be a bit more playable... in a game. At least it isn't a QTE fight, but from a gameplay standpoint, it's boring.

Damn as i get older and hearing ocelot saying "your pretty good" brings back all the flashbacks of my childhood. A real chiling moment for us old school gamers.
My favorite part too! It's impossible describe the feelings in this exactly moment, I remember start crying when the life bars appears with the code names and the songs ❤ best ending ever
i think when Liquid Ocelot took on different personas during each phase of the fight Snake does as well and each one have very important meaning in my eyes, Solid Snake VS Liquid phase: during this phase Liquid wants to kill Snake no matter how old he is, he won't stop until he surpasses his brother to be Superior then he is. Solid Snake vs Liquid Ocelot phase: Snake is trying to finish what he started back in metal gear solid 2 during the big shell incident as much as Liquid and Ocelot. Naked Snake vs Ocelot phase: Ocelot takes over when he wants a rematch with his rival Big Boss and since Solid Snake surprised big boss he wants to surpass the next big thing, surpass the son of Big Boss and fighting for the true title of Boss. there's a lot happening in this fight even im missing our seeing. But every true MGS fans knows exactly the true meaning in this final fight with liquid and ocelot
+Ryza Cobalion I agree with your ideas on each phase, but to me, when the Old Snake vs Liquid Ocelot phase starts, Snake and Liquid Ocelot are just two old men who want to settle a score from long ago, no winners or losers, just survivors of one last fight against each other so they can have their own peace. It's sad, but it's true for them. Snake is nearing his death and all he wants is to finish one more battle with Liquid so he won't have to fight anymore.
+Ryza Cobalion I think you both make great valid points and to add to the conversation, my theory on the fight between Naked Snake vs Ocelot... I believe that it may be trace DNA of the original Big Boss in Snake wanting to finish the rivalry between both Ocelot and Big Boss because in the health bar the name changes to Naked Snake. Then again, I am just making a speculation and I could be wrong.
The mgs series can be so stupid sometimes, but right here 6:00 when the music starts, damn awesome. Two tired, old war dogs, with no more battles to fight, barely able to stand on there own feet, they give it 1 last go. war may be horrible but its the only thing they know.
I love how the fight evolves in multiple ways throughout the fight. the music starts as mg1 music, then mg2, then mg3, and then finally mg4, it is a really nice moment of nostalgia and a reminder of how much lead up the this moment. I also love how the health bar names change as the fight progresses, Ocelots name starts as liquid, then changes to liquid ocelot, then finally just ocelot, and every time it changes we see a clip of him In all the games he has been in. Snakes name also changes but on a smaller level, he starts off as solid snake and changes to naked snake near the finale phase, i don’t really know why considering naked snake is big boss but a cool detail none of the less.
The Naked Snake name change is more calling back to a theme of MGS in general about how much we carry over from the past generation and how it defines us, Ocelot is settling his score with Naked Snake through Solid Snake
I think it's because that the whole fight is kind of like from ocelot poverty. Mgs 1- the liquid persona is in full control Mgs 2- the cracks are starting to show, hence liquid ocelot Mgs 3- liquid has been repressed for a moment allowing ocelot to feel some sort of nostalgia, like he's fight Big Boss, just like in groznyv grad
I love how in Snake eater Eva is about to shoot Ocelot while he is running away and Snakes stops her saying that he's still too young and Eva says "You're going to regret stopping me"
@Mattson The F60 Player Spoilers if you didn't see the ending of MGS4: Big Boss confirmed it was the new strain of Foxdie that is actually what killed Ocelot. Though I doubt Snake beating the hell out of him helped 😂
Yeah it is the best by far, the music at the end when big boss is dying and snake lights his cigar for him tears at your heart strings. It is the only scene in video games that made me tear up.
This is it bois. Nothing will ever top this. The very end of the Metal Gear saga injecting the whole trip itself completely from beggining to end in a single scenario. Nothing can invoke so many memories and feels from childhood, teenage and adulthood like this. It's not just Metal Gear, it's our life with it. Thanks Kojima, we need nothing else.
best bossfight? its exacty the same as MGS 1, on purpose, but with some overused cutscene, lol, MGS 1 final boss IS one of the best boss fight gaming in a storystyle genre thou
I love how for each round of the fight each stance pays homage to an earlier battle. At 10:55 for example Ocelot makes a gesture just like his younger self in Metal Gear Solid 3. :D
I did read it. And you said that they respected eachother. And I said to myself "No they don't" So then I added that comment. Your argument is invalid.
GetReddy how is 4:30 - 5:15 NOT respecting each other? is it the pummeling and fighting "dirty" because a) You are not going to stop hitting an opponent after one shot, this isn't an RPG or those crappy movies were they go one hit at a time b) it's a battle to the death, if you truly respect your opponent you will go all out and use anything and everything at your disposal, I mean, samurais would use Swords fiercely to Kill each other even if it meant throwing sand in their eyes to open a stab to the crotch. If you do any less than 100% THAT is disrespecting an opponent by considering them inferior *yes, the original post is 6 months old, this is for the future generations mind you*
"You're pretty good."(Turns from Liquid to Ocelot.) Dies by his foe. The best game cutscene Kojima broke the record for the greatest cutscene in a game.
(I don't really want to get into an argument in such an epic video, but there it goes) The thing is, Hayter is incredible for solid snake/naked snake, but the more "evil" naked snake becomes, he eventually becomes Big Boss, which is why he is not anymore the same person, therefore Sutherland is the "transition" of Big Boss.
***** Never said that *I* thought it was. Just that some people might. For the record, I think MGS2 would've been better if it hadn't been trying to troll the player half the time, but it was still a very good game.
***** It doesn't get much hate though Some folks just think it was a disappointment is all I know that, even though I got to like it as I played through it, when I first loaded it up I was quite upset. Thought I'd gotten the wrong game or missed one or something.
5:12 Like two boys fighting over something. "Alright, lemme use this syringe.." "No, it's mine!" "Nuh-uh, I called it!" *Breaks finger* "Moooooom!" Also, something odd.. at 7:40, Liquid takes more damage from the crash to the ground... okay...?
+djsmallboy Correction, Shalashaska/ Ocelot is the son of The Boss, Not Big Boss. However Liquid is in his mind, so they are not really related at a biological point anymore.

when it comes to metal gear the Close quarters are half real and half as to seeing how snake and liquid fought, those two been through alot of shit. metal gear solid is one of the best campaigns games ever
Just the level of presentation quality alone (especially 7:20-7:37) makes this fight once of the best of all time. If you saw just gameplay of this, like 2 ragdolls in a wrestling match or something, it might be shit. But the Music, the Animation, and all the Emotions leading up to this fight... Even better is, if you don't know Metal Gear's history all that well (no one blames you), all the emotions of the fight, all the respect/rivalry shown between these two characters throughout the series, is exemplified before the real fight, which only sweetens everything. This scene knows what it wants to be, then expects higher than that, and then surpasses those expectations. Kojima confirmed Legendary Director
+epicgamer5009 what makes him so legendary is his attention to detail, even the smallest things show significance and he is able to say and express so much to through the tiniest of things. The example i'm referring to here is the names changing on the health bars. When snake eater started playing and the names changed to Naked Snake and Ocelot i dropped my controller and flipped out for about 20 minutes cause it hit me that hard! Absolutely brilliant writing
To think that everything that ever happened in the Metal Gear series ultimately came to this - a final, epic, face-to-face fist fight between the son of The Boss, and the son of Big Boss. Complete with nostalgic music and health bars too. It's this fight in the game that finally makes you realize that this whole final encounter between Solid and Liquid is completely pointless. They've served the only purpose they were made for - to fight - with nothing more to do, yet they keep on fighting. As difficult as the franchise's story is to follow, it really is a gem of a series. The music, gameplay, characters, I love all of it. Metal Gear will always be, at least in my opinion, one of the greatest video game series ever created... And I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Two tired old men with nothing left to do but die, fighting a fight that's already finished because it's all they know how to do.
They wanted a fair fight. As a 10 year old who beat the game I realy miss this
Despite their hate towards each other, they still respect each other, and they want to settle the score once and for all. It will do them no honor if they cheat.
4:34 It always made me laugh how snake goes for a round house kick and actual just throws himself at Ocelot and he fucking catches him. Hilarious.
No it looked like he was doing a jumping turning back kick or a jumping inside-outside cresent kick
But nevertheless its still funny to look at XD
@@neththeobnoxioussponge8929 To me it looks like Hideo Kojima watched some Hulk Hogan match re-runs when writing this scene.. Pretty sure if transcripts of what he told the animators to put in this scene would be "this WWE match, I want it in the game"

11:00 I like how it says Naked Snake vs Ocelot. Very deep.
Its a reference from their helicopter fight i think
Or how Liquid becomes Liquid Ocelot in round 2
Nice comment m8.
i love your comment. *Salutes*
One of the nicest analysis about this ending I've read. Good job dude
*"But... we still have a score to settle."*
Goosebumps every time
This whole war was reduced from their armies to only the two of them because while the armies from both sides help each other, both Snake and Ocelot decided to fight to settle the score, it's really great that they wanted a fair battle as if winning by cheating is denying them the victory they want.
So the end of MGS4 is two old people beating each other to death on a boat?
Album Interpretations Yes, and it's fucking awesome
Album Interpretations Correct. This fight is mimicking the one Liquid Snake and Solid Snake had on top of Metal Gear Rex at Shadow Moses.

when MGS2 lifebars came in: it should've said "Iroquois Pliskin"
But he wasn’t pliskin on the tanker, it was solid on the tanker
i think when Liquid Ocelot took on different personas during each phase of the fight Snake does as well and each one have very important meaning in my eyes,
Solid Snake VS Liquid phase:
during this phase Liquid wants to kill Snake no matter how old he is, he won't stop until he surpasses his brother to be Superior then he is.
Solid Snake vs Liquid Ocelot phase:
Snake is trying to finish what he started back in metal gear solid 2 during the big shell incident as much as Liquid and Ocelot.
Naked Snake vs Ocelot phase:
Ocelot takes over when he wants a rematch with his rival Big Boss and since Solid Snake surprised big boss he wants to surpass the next big thing, surpass the son of Big Boss and fighting for the true title of Boss.
there's a lot happening in this fight even im missing our seeing. But every true MGS fans knows exactly the true meaning in this final fight with liquid and ocelot
Ryza Cobalion Snake is also a lot more energetic/agile in the earilier phases, especially the MGS1 one, and in MGS4 phase he;s just a weak old man
Vorox17 Old, but not obsolete
+Ryza Cobalion I agree with your ideas on each phase, but to me, when the Old Snake vs Liquid Ocelot phase starts, Snake and Liquid Ocelot are just two old men who want to settle a score from long ago, no winners or losers, just survivors of one last fight against each other so they can have their own peace. It's sad, but it's true for them. Snake is nearing his death and all he wants is to finish one more battle with Liquid so he won't have to fight anymore.
Davis Lent good point.
I love how the combat in this section is like a combination of CQC and the classic punch punch kick combo

The health bar changes too
Naked snake to remember mgs 3 i think
The Naked Snake name change is more calling back to a theme of MGS in general about how much we carry over from the past generation and how it defines us, Ocelot is settling his score with Naked Snake through Solid Snake
I think it's because that the whole fight is kind of like from ocelot poverty.
Mgs 1- the liquid persona is in full control
Mgs 2- the cracks are starting to show, hence liquid ocelot
Mgs 3- liquid has been repressed for a moment allowing ocelot to feel some sort of nostalgia, like he's fight Big Boss, just like in groznyv grad
Idk why but *Old* *Snake* is the most heart touching piece I've ever heard. I used to play the title screen of MGS4 just to fall asleep to this

a) You are not going to stop hitting an opponent after one shot, this isn't an RPG or those crappy movies were they go one hit at a time
b) it's a battle to the death, if you truly respect your opponent you will go all out and use anything and everything at your disposal, I mean, samurais would use Swords fiercely to Kill each other even if it meant throwing sand in their eyes to open a stab to the crotch.
