I'm not surprised you have so many Australian subs, we're pretty similar!
As for the types of forest down here, for sure there is a lot of 'Outback' but we also have heaps of Tropical/Sub-Tropical Rainforest up in the north of Queensland, where i live on the east coast its primarily Eucalypt and Casaurina forest (try searching 'Watagans National Park, or Olney State Forest, New South Wales if you're interested), then down towards Victoria and Tasmania in the south of Australia again it's all super lush rainforest. So there's a lot of variety outside of the outback.
I'm loving the base camp type videos where you settle down for a couple of days doing bushcrafty stuff, My wife only watches when Scout is involved haha.

For sure, I'm from Vancouver area and felt totally at home camping around NSW and especially around Falls Creek Where I spent a winter.
Tasmanian here. We do have rain forest pockets. But my favourite areas are the High Lands. Rocky, grassy, scrubby... wet, freezing, and tons of lakes and huge gum trees. Kinda every type of terrain, except sandy deserts, but we do have very dry and arid bush land aswell. Each coastal area, n s e w, is different from the other and luscious and green and fertile. But I'm going to stop telling you now because the beauty down here is rare and wild and a state secret.
Don't forget the mountains and grasslands of the amazing and beautiful brumbies! It's my goal to visit y'all just to see them

This is not a criticism, just a little construction tip about working with bowed lumber or timbers: always crown upwards or outwards. Nearly every timber or piece of lumber will have a bow in it. For horizontal pieces (such as ridge poles) you don't want the pole to sag in the middle--instead, crown it upwards so that the bowed part is higher than the ends. Gravity (and whatever you add to the pole) will tend to straighten the pole. Crowning it downward, as you have done, will result in a weaker pole, which will just sag even more, as time goes on. Hope that isn't too confusing.
do you mean have the thicker part of the branch lower and the thinner higher up, so that it tapers upward?
If you pole is naturally bent I.E. ( instead of I You want to lash it with the apex of the bend has the high point instead of the low point.

I’m always so excited when I see a notification of your channel, I always wanted to go bushcrafting but I just don’t have the equipment. I live in the Netherlands and I think I’m gonna buy a buck bantam blw at black friday. I always liked fire, knives and the outdoors, my parents don’t think I need a knife so I made one out of wood to show how beautiful it is. My mom agrees now but my dad still doesn’t, I hope I can have knife. When I studied to become a vet, I’m going to emigrate to Sweden!! I also like Sweden at the age of 5 so I want to make my dreams come true. I have two brothers, one is allergic for animals, I love doges all when I even could think about dogs... my father is also allergic for animals and always says I need to get a dog when I live alone. Thats why I want to live in Sweden far from the Netherlands and far from all the dirty states. You may think why I wrote this, because I think of my future in Sweden inside you, you do and have what I also like to do or have.... If you read this thanks for reading.🙂🙂
Your question about Australia places - yes there is a lot of hot dry outback-style bush. But also highland temperate forests that can get snow, through to tropical jungle and rain forest. Lots of places you'd like.

here in Victoria is alright, very diverse, especially the weather
South east Queensland here! Offers various terrain and is an absolute cracking part of Australia
Lots of Victoria and Tasmania is Joe-country, western NSW, SA, WA and NT are largely desert. QLD is everything from desert to temperate forest to tropical jungle. Don't dismiss desert camping though, best camps I've ever done are winter desert camps in the Flinders Ranges.
From NSW. Mosty mountains and forest around me becomes more arid and dry further west you go.
If I were 30 years younger, I'd want Joe as a best friend. Imagine the adventures...

I'm one of the many Aussie subscribers here on your channel. Here in Australia there are heaps of different forest types and bush areas, not just desert environment. Here where I live in Victoria we have some of the best camping up in the Vic High Country! Defiantly worth putting on your todo list!

I think the axe thing is a good idea. One time as a kid I was camping with my scout troop ( I'm a male using my mom's account.) and we had built a super shelter and our scout leader had put his hatchet right next to yum. We asked him why and he said just in case you need you have right there and don't have to fish through your pack for it. And when some guy from the nearby public campsite outside the nearby small town, some guy attacked us with a knife and our leader grabbed his axe when the guy started yelling from a distance. We got out and he lunged at my friend. Then our leader, instead of looking for his axe when it was dark and our lamps and stuff were off, hit the guy on the head with the back of his axe. He was later arrested while still unconscious. So yeah, If it's silly who cares. Sometimes you need it.

i always stick mine into something like this, much easier to find when its standing vertical. also in sand stuff like that can get buried in 2 seconds by someone walking by.

Great video Joe - hope all's well. If you want to show the progression of day-to-night a little more without going into full manual, just kick the camera into either aperture or shutter priority mode before the light starts to change, take the ISO out of auto and set it to whatever the camera had been using up to that point. Otherwise, the camera's just going to keep ramping up the ISO in order to hold onto exposure for as long as it can. Once it's dark, feel free to flip back into full auto.

I Have been a long term Sub of all 3 and will tell you what I told them, I Sub to very few Chs. When I do it's always for the same 2 reasons. 1. 30% Content and 2. 70% Personality. Unfortunately our West Australian landscape is mostly that typical hot, dusty, barren sort of bush, and bushcraft and survival is somewhat difficult but a good challenge. I reckon you were sent some Bundaberg Rum or "Bundy" which I'm sure you'll find an interesting drop. Another great vid mate, cheers
Australia doesn't really start getting desert until a couple hundred kilometres in, its mostly what we call bushland which is moderate to heavy density of large trees and a fair bit of knee/waist ground bushes with a decent amount of rock. I'd say this applies to a good portion of the country, especially the bottom half. Up north especially far north it can vary more from rain forests to sparse and scrub land and Western Australia is a world to it self.

Australia has just about everything, rainforest to desert, snow to tropical forest, lots of mountains and lots of plains. It's a big place. There is a massive desert, 30% or so is habitable from memory. Tasmania in winter would probably suit you well, or the east coast in winter. Just don't go anywhere in summer. Unless there's a swimming hole. Even then, best to go in or around winter.

Australia seems more of a really hot climate weather camping, dessert camping for people in the middle of aus would be some interesting videos... having to survive with minimal trees, getting water from cactus maybe? Although i imagine it would be a lot more dangerous with snakes and such in the dessert

It gets down to 0 degrees Celsius in Winter in parts of New South Wales some nights and you live a shit tonne further away from the Equator than we do. Australia has many different climates: desert (mainly central Australia), rainforest/tropical (northern Australia and also Tasmania), some areas in South Australia can even receive snow during winter.
it is a beautiful place to live and the wildlife is diverse.

I agree on the waking up to the cold. You can lay in your bag and do nothing, or you can get up, move around warm up, and get stuff done. Also, if you prep your morning starter wood the night before and stash it away, you can start the fire right away. BTW, that bacon looked delightful.

Jo, do you ever consider using a roll of aluminum foil as a fire protector and reflector saver? As well as stapling it to the inside of your shelter roof? You can get 15 rolls of it at dollar stores at the same cost of a space blanket and it would cover more area.

Joe, you mentioned wandering for a while before finding the shelter. Glad you did for sure. By coincidence Dave Pearson posted a video this AM talking about using a compass to find the trail if lost. Nothing new to most but there are lots of nubes watching and getting started. Was thinking a video or series even on how you navigate in new areas, prevent becoming lost and what you would do if you did. Just a thought. Happy holidays to you and your family. Hi Joe, another Aussie fan! I see a lot of comments regarding Australian bushcrafting experts and they are indeed experts! Its so hot and dry in a lot of the area's these great men film in (although still fairly wooded) that it takes a survival expert to thrive out here. Our Aboriginal peoples are like none other in the world when it comes to survival in harsh environments. Massive calling for you down here mate, would love to see you down under someday in the future! Cheers
