I totally agree. I was trying to think how to say the same thing. One thing I was wondering was if it would have been worthwhile to use a wire brush or a Scotchbrite pad to clean the gunk off the valve stem before adding the washers. Since it worked I guess not. Thanks
great video from someone who is clearly (a) a regular, intelligent guy that (b) understands the basic laws of physics well enough to explain this process in simple, direct manner without a ton of jargon, so that it makes sense to people coming in with no prior knowledge, like me. i wish all instructional videos were like this! thank you!!
When removing or installing always have stem in open position so you don't damage washer retainer cup. Also,when old washer is missing look in port (hole) for old washer pieces before you reassemble. Good job!

I'm glad you like the video. If the handle is really stuck you'll probably need to use a handle puller. Nearly all hardware stores carry them in the plumbing section and they cost $10-20. Good luck!
Appreciate the down home intelligence and thorough explanation. Now I feel like I can take a look at MY situation and evaluate the scope of the endeavor. Everyone needs to chill about the state of age or cleanliness of the surround. Get a grip - not everyone is "repairing" brand new bathtub fixtures. I specifically avoided choosing clips that looked this unrealistic because I was fairly certain that age brings with it different unexpected challenges that are not strictly mechanical as a new install/replacement. Thanks for keeping it real.
the seals are new...i think i need to change the seats too, but i should ve asked my question after finishing watching your video because right at the end you showed that i should turn on the water before putting the handles back on ...i did this (the latter) and thats what made the water come out...they were turned back on, glad you showed this..you are very very helpful. i haven t changed a fawcett in over 20 years and that was only once.....lol

Good vid! I'm buying a old home built in 1951 with all the original fixtures and all of them leak. I'll be busy fixing those old stem and seat valves! Alot of Lowes and Homer Depots no longer carry the bits you need but the old Ace Hardware on the edge of town still does! Again, good video!

Hey thanks so much for this video! I was able to fix the leaking shower faucet in my home. It was my first time so I didn't know how to do it and your instruction helped me a lot. I did brake the stem when I took the faucet handle out 'cause it was stuck so I ended up replacing the whole stem and a new handle. I also had to buy the valve socket wrench. Total cost: $32 which I think it was worth it and much cheaper than what a plumber would had charged me plus I had a lot of fun doing it myself.

Great video!! Way to keep going after cutting yourself..shows the viewer that they need to take caution while working with the stems. I hate watching videos where they do a lot of out takes and make projects look easier than they really are. I repaired both of my bathroom's leaky faucets - thanks to you! I did end up springing for the $10.50 to get the faucet handle puller tool though. After struggling with the first one I ran out and bought it. Makes it a snap to get the old handles off.

Thanks for the video. I have an old 50's house with slight leaking. Everytime I try some plumbing I discover I don't have a tool that makes the job easy. So I end up calling out our friendly plumber. First time I didn't have a pipe wrench. Second time I discovered there was a tool called a nipple extractor. Now I'm better prepared and know I need those socket wrench things. The neighborhood hardware store usually carries whats needed for older period houses. So should be good with your instructions. Much appreciated.
Agreed...and a new first aid kit stocked with band-aids. I specially liked the bloody paper towel. I'd hire this guy. He didn't let a little blood stop him from finishing the job.

You didn't even try to sugarcoat it. Plumbing jobs suck on old fixtures/faucets. I have to do this same job because both tubs in the house are leaking the same way. I had a plumber show up saying he wanted to saw off the old faucets, cut a hole in the fiberglass, and redo the 3 to 1 and put some designer cover over the big hole. All of that for 3500. I told him to go pound sand. I just didn't want to stress myself out about this plumbing job, but after that BS... I'll take it on any day. Again thanks for making a real video.
For this type of faucet with 3 knobs, how would you go about fixing low water pressure, I have low water pressure for the hot water in my apartment, told the maintenance here but for some reason they won't fix. I wanted to do it myself but do you have to cut off the water to do that?, I don't even know where the water cut off valve is? I have not been able to enjoy hot water showers because there is not enough hot water pressure.

Most hardware stores sell whole kits for various stem styles but you can also just buy individual o-rings and seals if you don't need to replace everything.
I really appreciate the reality of this video. The majority of us will probably have the same problems, and these probably wouldn't be thought of or covered in a "scripted" demo video.

(original equipment). I'm planning a complete remodeling of the bathroom in a few weeks. Wish me luck.
why didn't you fix that big hole by the handle while you had everything off? I think I can do this now watching you. Good idea to cover the drain so things won't fall in there. I'll rember that. Hope i don't cut myself
Low pressure could be caused by a broken stem but might be an issue with the plumbing somewhere else in the building. If the problem is the stem, then you can follow this video but you will need to turn off the water. There is usually a shut-off valve located behind the shower plumbing. Look for a panel or opening on the other side of the wall that the faucet is on. This is sometimes hidden in a closet or behind a panel.
My leak is coming out of the Hot Water handle itself, instead of the shower head. I am assuming the repair is the same and will attempt it.. Thanks.. u made it simple. btw.. u have really nice hands, thumbs.. (I used to hire hand models).
I have an older hardware on my bathtub. It has two handles which do not have the plastic cover piece over the screw. There is a small hex nut on the backside of the handle. I have tried clockwise and counter clockwise, (gently) to get it loose with out success. Please advise me on how to remove the hot/cold handles. (what do I hold the handle with btw when I crank on the nut?)
so i have a moen single lever temp true or what ever it is called the original cartridge was in and very stuck i was able to get the metal center out of the cartridge but the outer part was plastic in an act of desperation i jammed a 3/4 inch wood bit in put in drill turned in reverse and backed it out! it worked

Sometimes when you do any plumbing work you can get some discolored water but it should go away fairly quickly as you run the water. If it doesn't go away in a few seconds then, there is probably a bigger issue you need to deal with.

I don't really think the silicone caulk will help keep the water out with the big chip out of the tile!

did you inspect the corroded valve seat, did you remove any debris in the valve seat ...old washer debris perhaps?

At the end of the video the water is still dripping little droplets. Thats basically whats happening that id like to fix.
