@@justinkline1294 who would you put as a GOAT for punk? I mean, just Detroit alone makes me kinda agree with the comment of this being the GOAT. For me, players like Hunter from AFI (although still an amazing player in whatever genre they play now, I'm referring to The Art of Drowning and work before that) would make me think: wow, these guys actually elevate the technical part of punk. But with Rancid and Matt, damn, it's hard to come up with a contender.

    • @justinkline1294

@@manuele.itriagom.728 Maybe Mike Watt? He's the reason I picked up a bass at age 30, some decade plus ago. So I'm probably biased. But Freeman's pick work is quite impressive, and he's been in 2 fundamental ska-punk bands from that era. And his style is also original. Just hard to say is what I'm sayin'. I guess.

Good job! I'm a guitar player who plays bass. While I love Rancid my wheelhouse is more Paul Siminon and Peter Hook.
The most important thing for a bass player is to play on time. Something I will pass on to you is that you will want to try playing with picks, your fingers and your thumb. Each gives a different feel to the note. Using a pick helps with a crisp and sharp attack to the note, its great for quarter, eighth, and sixteenth notes. Fingers are pretty much tried and true bass playing. Thumb is great for half notes and whole notes. Its pretty important to reggae.
Also where you pick or pluck your note will add a lot of color to your note. You want warm, play by the neck. You want attack? Play over the pickup. You want a cold bass? Play towards the bridge.
If you want to play in a band get an amp that kicks out 200 watts or more to be heard over the kick drum. I had a Ampeg Rocketbass 100 amp and while it sounded great on its own a lively drummer always drowned it out. Right now I use a old 80s Peavey KB100 (It's a keyboard amp but it kicks out the jams, also it has Reverb!!!) and I have a used Fender Rumble 15 to practice on at home (I'm upgrading the speaker once it arrives). Make sure you get a great cable because all you need is a bass, a cable and an amp.
I hope you enjoy your journey with music.

@@gringogreen4719 thank you very much for your time and advice. I do play guitar, so that's been a big help. I never really paid bass as much attention as it deserves. I'm really having fun with funk, as long as ya hit the one in time anything goes. I really can't express how your comment lit a fire right under my ass. Lol. I'm using a line 6 guitar amp with a single 10. It's working out for now, but will be looking into bass amps soon. I have a jackson minion bass, I really want a 1980's fender P. Again, thank you and Rick on my brother!

That's the thing about music. As long as it sounds good and is sustainable there is no such thing as the right technique. My bass technique probably isn't 'proper' because I taught myself, but it works for me and I get the sounds that I want and it doesn't hurt my hands so I'll keep doing it.

Op Ivy/Rancid was one of the first bands I can remember listening to where the bass actually stood out on it's own rather than being "the rhythm section". All these years later I finally picked up the bass after playing guitar most of my life and I think I enjoy it more. Got to see Rancid in concert last year and Matt is just up there casually blasting out his amazing basslines, and looking like he is enjoying every minute of it too. A legendary bassist that also seems like an all-around cool dude. Love it.

it had a profound impact on my self taught songwriting and playing skills. Even on Rancid and Let's go the bass lines were outstanding.
Freemans bass technique and melodic lines were greatly admired, copied and praised bigtime. Matt & co. thanx for great music I have grown up with.

Informative life story from a skilled bassist, Matt's honesty is something I find inspiring as a guitar composer who uses really thick strings to mimic a bass player sometimes and to get a fuller harmony sound. Great to know Matt likes Brian Setzer since I love Brian Setzer Orchestra and Matt clearly fuses those ideas to get a personal sound that is appealing to the ear!

Matt is pretty much my #1 bass influence, in large part because of his "poor left hand technique." I always noticed Matt plays like he has small hands even though his hands aren't particularly small, then I heard/read in an interview it's because of a childhood arm/wrist injury. Anyway, his basslines have been great for me to learn with my ridiculous, child sized (I'm 39 😅) hands because we have the same left hand technique, just for different reasons. His basslines are interesting, playable, make sense to me, and I'm happy they exist. 💜

THIS is why Matt freeman is and always will be the BEST bass player. It’s all heart! He’s got teachnique he’s learned over time and the last time I saw rancid I got up front and had Oma bed to go over in front of Tim but I could not take my eyes off of Matt freeman’s hands. I’m a bass player and I play exactly the way he’s describing in the sense of trying my best and playing it the way I hear it. Song what I can-less of a technical style and more from the heart but the way he’s talking about bassists he admires and not being able to do what they do is how I feel about him. He made me excited about playing bass in the first place and made me realize what can be done with it. I’ve had the privilege of meeting and playing with a lot of bands I really like but never Rancid and that still seems forever outta reach. Someday I hope he’s inspirational and will forever be my favorite bassist.

Well his left hand technique is inelegant, but impressive. Essentially Jaco was openly lazy, and didn't want to move his hand, he would essentially shred, except on a fretless J bass, and Matt learned to move his hand really fast rather to hit the notes he wanted, but those differences are what make them two of the most distinctive bass players of all time.

@@PoodlestarGenerica If you have ever watched Rancid live Matt plays everything dead on to the recordings. Also in a Punk Rock band, elegance is not a concern. Jaco was a phenom whom played that jacked up Fender Jazz Bass almost 100 percent of the time. My point is we actually concur. They both made their marks in music. Not Playing by the book is inelegant but it certainly is much more creative and aubibly pleasing in their instances.

Rancid and Matt Freeman was the reason i quit boxing, started practicing my bass skills and took a deeeeeep dive into punk rock back in '94. I'm forty now and haven't found the bottom yet 😅

Always criminally overlooked whenever people talk about the great Bass players. Not many, if any, better in the punk scene and is above most in rock and metal.

They spelled Entwistle wrong twice. Nonetheless, matt freeman is one of my faves. Definitely the best out of fender's little promo videos.

Matt isn’t your typical punk bass player. He adds a lot of melody underneath the guitars.
