I don't think Mike's ever told the story of how he acquired this legendary bass before. Thanks for doing this Matt! Gotta go listen to Kerplunk and Insomniac now to hear this thing in all its glory
As an East Bay kid who spent a night or two at Gilman and Berkeley Square back in the 80s/90s, it always makes me smile to hear a Crimpshrine shoutout. Thanks to you all for making the East Bay what it was (and is).
I was just talking to Brian Stern about old East Bay bass players. Listening to Econochrist and Dead and Gone, I had to ask, "Why did you guys play like that?!" So much melodic meandering that was almost completely independent from the rest of the song. He just said that all the East Bay bass players played "busy as hell" back then, which is so true. Thanks for this interview!
Mike was very comfortable talking with Matt. They both go way back before any stardom or dreams of “making it”. The early Gilman St days were golden and pure, they didn’t care about mainstream success of any sort. Their successes came being true to themselves and playing exactly the music they loved. 👊🏽👍🏽😁🎶🎶
Saw the guys as the Foxboro Hot Tubs back in Dallas. Mike, Billie and Tre all came out after the show to meet everyone. Mike stayed out for a long time just shooting the shit with all the fans. Such a nice guy. I also always choose a spot immediately in front of Mike at every Green Day show I ever go to.
I got to see Tilt open for Green Day right before the Dookie tour and when I saw Pete on stage I was like "whoa that's a Crimpshrine member 🤯🤯🤯". Then he sang his song Fool To Blame and it was like 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯. You, Pete, Mike, Paul Curran, And Bill Monsula were all way ahead of the game 👍👊
That was great! I know it’s tough sometimes to find time on tour to talk gear, but it was super cool. Also not sure how he gets those Gibsons to sound so good either! Every one I’ve ever tried I couldn’t bond with 🤷♂️
Mike Dirnt is such a great punk drummer because he doesn't put himself in a box style-wise. And can write some great bass riffs that don't try to be anything but bass riffs. I'm a guitarist but I'm learning bass and what I'm actually most excited to learn is Green Day and The Beatles, because I just enjoy the bass riffs for those bands a lot. I love seeing Mike here so casual and relaxed with you. Great interview. And thanks to Mike Dirnt for all the great music!
you two are awesome.... loved that Mike was sporting a Charger shirt.. saw you guys in Arlington... what an amazing show.... THANK YOU FOR THE PAST 35 YEARS
Thanks to Mike for mentioning Poland, Regards from Warsaw 🇵🇱 PS. Mr. Freeman, Thank You for an amazing show last year I had a privilege to take some photos during Your gig
Matt you've smashed it mate awesome interview. Thanks so much! Shame you boys aren't supporting green day in Australia next year. Please kick your band mate in the nuts for me for still holding a grudge about Brody
Its like he isnt aware of his legend status, super humble and thanking Mike for letting Rancid tour with them. Super cool to see someone with his talent and success still treat other people well.
Wow legends! I was highly inspired by Matt and Mike to use a pick even though ill never get even close to their skill. Matt you seem so humble. Im sure you realize thousand or even millions of us have listened to you bass lines over and over with exteme admiration.
I really enjoyed this because you both are amazing bass players, each with their own distinct style. I would personally love to see you interview more bass players (especially from the Lookout Records bands).
Thanks for doing this piece. Great memories of 1987 - 1992 here in Berkeley. Yes, Chrimpshire, Albany, Berkeley, Doherty’s and all. … plus the S.F. show this month was great. Linda Lindas too. As for the Saturday at Gilman, sorry the fire happened and fire trucks showed … but you and Willer were gentleman, and made it through. Peace, Cheers, … -PM
This Just brings such a smile to my face.. ill never forget being in gr7 and pickin up kerplunk and then couple years later my buddy going dude you gotta hear this and poped in Rancid.. and Just hearing LETS GOOOOOOO .Bamm Adina's crying again... great memories cheers boys
I’ve waited for years to see a video where Mike talks about his old G3. He’s the reason I play them and both of you guys are huge influences on my playing.
Really appreciate the video, love both you guys and Rancid & Greed Day. And Crimpshrine! Nice to hear two legends talk about one of my other favourite bands and bassists, Pete Rypins is incredible. Thanks Matt!
Just saw you both at the show in Phoenix! Hadn’t seen either of you since I was 14 I was in heaven! You are my number one favorite bass player of all time Mike is up there too! Great interview!
My two favourite bass players!! I can’t even begin to imagine what it was like going to Gilman with all those bands back then, thanks for the video Mike and Matt, enjoy the rest of the tour 🙌
Awesome video! Can't wait to see Green Day live in Australia in 2025. 8 years later haha! Great video nonetheless. Mike Dirnt is one of the greats for sure! Much love, from Australia! ❤
I love both of your guys bass playing. I’m 47 and both Green Day and Rancid were two of my favorites. Rancid was always number one as soon as I heard salvation I was hooked. Thanks Matt
Dude for a punk bassist that was inspired by both of your playing to pick up a bass. This shit is better than porn for me. I could watch HOURS of this.
This would be an amazing series. Just two bass players talking about the experience they have accumulated over the years. Two of my largest influences in one room.... oh my!
I was at the Oracle show and as someone who grew up going to Gilman and as a lifelong Giants fan it was a magical night all around. Thanks for the decades of amazing music and for always being a cool dude and one of the many amazing people from our little scene. I doubt you'll remember but your brother took me to a show of yours with AFI when I was 15 as a reward for not cutting class for a semester at Albany high and took me backstage and you signed an And Out Come the Wolves shirt for me. Once again, thanks for the memories and everything, and RIP Josh.
This was an incredible interview! Love how detailed Mike was and so awesome that both the OG basses came out for that show! Even Mike was blown away by the Op Ivy bass! Also, awesome to see him in a Charger shirt! Side note: was at the Portland Show last night and it was incredible!
Just two legendary dudes, talking about the best instrument on the planet. Loved this video man, thank you so much for making it and brightening my day.
Love these so much. Started out as a bass player and it was Les Claypool and Bruce Thomas. Then I got the grunge and then my buddy gave me the album. Let’s go and the world opened up. Gonna share an Op Ivy cover soon. Hope it makes you proud.
Definitely cool seeing the interview with Mike, the two legendary punk bassists hanging out and Mike’s Grabber is absolutely legendary since that was the sound of Dookie and Insomniac
I have a 74 Grabber with the sliding pickup. Fantastic instrument. Matt you should talk to Eddie from Thrice! He’s got some great Grabbers! Some that he has built!
saw you guys play seattle a few days ago. had an awesome time with my cousin. gibson rippers/grabbers/g-3s definitely not for everyone. you gotta click with em. i own a black ripper with an ebony board that i will never sell. booming sound, dark dry tone thats perfect with some distortion, comfortable neck, looks badass. amazing punk bass. you guys plus krist novoselic and dee dee ramone are my top bass inspirations. thank you.
Matt knocked it out of Oracle park with this one!! A question I have, being so recognizable do you get time to still geek out on going record shopping? Used to go to Rasputin’s and the Lookout store up there when we’d get bored and want to drive to Oakland/SF/SJ from So. Cal. Still have some Crimpshrine and Tilt records/7 inches. Sir, thank you again for such a great interview. From a US Navy veteran.
Always loved Mikes G-3. I hunted for one for about 4 years back in the 90's but they were so hard to come by. Finally managed to get a 73 or 74 Grabber with the slide pick like he talked about and that was as close as I could get to a G-3. Been my favorite bass to play ever since
This is a fantastic interview! I love the casual comfortable energy, so real and really shows true artist love for playing and being out on tour with their friends making music. Love the wear and back story to use of the instruments! Duck tape🤘 awesome! Also awesome Mike wearing the Charger shirt🤘 This show was so great at Oracle!

like BillyGhostal, Insomniac is easily my favorite Green Day record. Just an absolute hoss from beginning to end. Don't sleep on it.
Mike and Matt are two of my major bass influences, I'm so happy to see this video ❤
Kerplunk bass lines are like...oh my god...O R G A S M I C
Something refreshing about a seasoned veteran of the music industry just making down to earth TH-cam videos. Keep it up

The two best punk bassists talking about bass. It doesn't get much better than this
They left out Scott Shiflett, he's really something else on bass. Guy's awesome at it
Yeah great vid, lighthearted BTS convo between mates, doesn't get any better.
Dude what a SICK video! Thanks Matt Freeman!
I don't care for gear videos for whatever reason but this one was pretty cool :)
Never heard Mike this casual before.
Mike's the coolest member in Green Day, bar none.
Like little brother talking to big brother

He keeps putting his hands on his bass, you can tell he deeply values this particular instrument. Which is fair, I love Mike's grabber
