The number of artists who consider Malcolm Young an inspiration runs pretty deep, but we’re guessing not too many have gone so far to actually have his face inked into their own skin. Anthrax axeman Scott Ian, though, has immortalized the late-great rhythm guitarist on his left bicep, along with his brother Angus Young on his right.
Sott Ian continues to say, “Malcolm has always been my hero since day one because he basically taught me how to play guitar. As a kid with AC/DC albums, vinyl albums, in my little bed room on a turn table, I just used to sit and figure out how to play their songs. And it was all Malcolm. You know? It was all him. So, I was learning to play specifically by listening to what he was doing. He was my guitar teacher. He was the reason I learned how to play rhythm guitar the way I do.”

Jason Turner when asked about his running and jumping all over the stage during his live performances, Angus said words to the effect of: “Look mate, I’m not a big guy, have you SEEN how big that guitar looks when I’m holding it? If I want to play the guitar I’ve got no choice, I’ve GOT to beat the HELL out of it, or it just doesn’t work!” Heh, he’s SO right! The SG isn’t really a big guitar, but it looks HUGE on Angus!
True enough. I'm 6'5" and play a SG and it looks like a friggin' ukulele on me! I love how it plays, so I am not changing any time soon, but it's almost like it was made to scale for someone Angus's size.
@@wezacker6482 it is a lighter guitar scale wise compared to lets say a '59 or '60 Les Paul. I read an article where Angus played a Les Paul live and nearly dislocated his left shoulder because of the Les Pauls weight. And Angus looks better with an SG anyway.
@@deanladue3151 I agree. It looks like a normal sized guitar on him. Did you see the 'Back in Black' video? Poor Mal was 'playing' a Gretsch White Falcon that was bigger than he was! He went right back to the stripped Gretsch Jet Firebird afterwards. :D
@@wezacker6482 and then you see Ted Nugent playing Byrdlands and they look tiny! Heard one of the reasons Malcolm ditched the White Falcon was it was hard to keep in tune with the heavy gauge strings that he used, and would have feedback issues at some venues.
Angus Young may be known as "the face of AC/DC", but Malcolm was the backbone, the heart and soul. RIP

I almost teared up at Scott's words of respect for Malcolm, that was super gratifying to hear. Two super great rhythm guitarists (Scott/Malcolm) each at their end of the spectrum, but respect is never far away. Rock and roll is more than just musicianship, it's a way of life, and a brotherhood. ☮☮☮🤘🤘🤘 RIP Malcolm.
I did tear up...but i always do when it comes to AC/DC..the only band i have a soul connection to..dont know why... i grew up in the 80s and listened to every band.. i cant stand some of the bands now but AC/DC has never changed,,im almost 54 and i still crank it up when i hear that first fiff...R.I.P Mal and Bon🙏😍 The G.O.A.T

And a sisterhood as well. I wanna do it myself. My family doesn’t understand it? But they don’t have too. My mother took me to the rnr hall of fame back in July that is 3.5 hours of my life I’ll never forget when I seen Angus’s school suit and Bon’s handwritten lyrics to highway to hell. And so many other rock and metal monuments it was then i truly realized? That’s what I want to do with my life.
Scott might be the biggest AC/DC fan, amazing to hear him play all the riff and tones spot on, and hear his genuine love talking about it, gotta love and respect the dude

What a great tribute to a guy that really doesn’t get the credit he deserves. Malcolm had such a way of playing. Yet stood in back of the stage and let Angus get all the attention. Thanks Scotty for showing the respect for a legend

The "try playing it right" is so true when you're with a band
Dude, I've played Ramones songs with bands that couldn't nail it, good players all. With AC/DC, they never strayed from their core style, and because of that, people take that style SOOOOO for granted. Go ahead and play Riff Raff, Nervous Shakedown or Have a Drink on Me and have it sound right. What band does anything close to that today? Pure rock n' roll...it's watered down today. These guys were steeped in old blues, rock and r&b, and applied that approach to heavy rock. Bands today might have been steeped in AC/DC, and they produce watered-down AC/DC. The roots that made them so unique seem to have been lost.

Awesome. Saw AC/DC in the RDS in Dublin years ago. Crowd were awesome - mad into it. Early in 'The Jack', Brian held the mic out for the crowd to sing and we did, he pulled the mic back but messed his lyrics up a tiny bit, the crowd had it right, he held his hands up in acknowledgement, switched the mic off and went back and sat on the drum riser laughing and waving us on. The crowd sang it begining to end absolutely perfectly and it still gives me goosebumps, it was brilliant. Brian walked to the front applauding and said something like "did yeah enjoy that as much as we did'. Crowd goes nuts again and the lads all come forward and applaud us. It was epic and still half a gig to enjoy. Great band and great guys who respect an audience. RIP Mal. (sorry that is so long but it was great to be part of).

The thing that makes AC/DC great - besides great talent and great songs - is that it's always been obvious that what they were about was making an audience feel good. It was never an ego thing, and I don't think it was even that much of a money thing. They just wanted audiences to feel as good listening to their music as they did playing it.
Older brother George always said .... ‘it’s the stop that rocks’.... and that is the beauty of Malcolm’s rhythm guitar playing. No wasted chords. No frivolous notes. Just enough to serve the song and nothing more. RIP Malcolm.

The tone Ian gets on this vid might be the closest ACDC tone I've heard not coming from the band themselves.
Yeah, that tone is absolutely balls on.
With that guitar and a Marshall amp it's the AC/DC sound.
I suspect the zero fret has a lot to do with this tone.

It's only the true masters of an instrument who affect the generations to come. Malcom Young is a classic example of this. He always quietly did his work without fuss or fanfair and that let Angus play the opposite role.

I read somewhere that an interviewer once came in and focused on Angus, had a great time talking with him, but that Malcolm got more and more angry with the guy because he wasn't acknowledging Malcolm at all. I believe he got thrown out, if I recall.

It may be only a video promotion for the guitar, but I love the way Scott tells the story of this man, the passion that comes from his eyes of a child that learned how to play guitar

There is a reason every AC/DC song sounds the same, at least to the non-fans..... It is because it is rock and roll played from the heart. No need to change the formula, no need to change the results when the results are perfect.... I will go to my grave loving and listening to all their songs with the same admiration and respect.

Same with Cliff and Phil, these guys are insanely good at doing a pure simple thing. The whole band could just levitate with just these three locked together, that made the AC/DC sound before you even added the skittering blues leads of Angus or the screeching of Brian which made it more majestic.
Basically AC/DC is kind of gone now. The had a damn good run.

My 1st concert was AC/DC at the Stanley Theater in September 1979. I started playing guitar for the same reason, the same way, as Scott Ian. I remember reading that Malcolm would actually play amazing blues runs at soundchecks, etc. He was more versatile than most people think.
I wouldn't assume he couldn't trade licks, it's all about having feel on the guitar.
It's amazing how focused AC/DC is as a band, each guy doing exactly his thing. Cool!
He actually recorded some of the solos on some of the albums.
In AC/DCs early days, Malcolm and Angus both played lead guitar. If you listen to the early material, you can pick out his lead parts. The song 'Soulstripper' the brothers trade leads back and forth. Hint: Malcolm has a slightly looser vibrato than Angus.

Listen to Louisiana Swamp Stomp here on YT. Its AC/DC jamming in the studio in 1995 recording Ballbreaker and waiting - as every day - for the notourious late producer named Rick Rubin. Its pure Blues. Not Blues Rock, but Blues.

I've been a fan of AC/DC for, well, for as long as I can remember. I bought a re-issue SG because of them. I feel they have always filled a void that I could never identify in words. Scott Ian, you nailed it at the end. The band has been the best friend I've never met and have lasted these many years. Good tribute, man.
Scott Ian is a guitarist who pays tribute to other lengendary guitarists like no other... You know without a doubt that he means what he says, and he makes you clearly understand what is so great about the guitarist he is paying tribute to.
He looks so happy playing those riffs. A lot of genuine love.

It's important people realize how big Malcolm Young was not only to the creation of AC/DC but to the SOUND and influence of AC/DC. By all accounts he ran that band. No Malcolm=No Angus, and Malcolm came up with most of the popular AC/DC power chord jams, including the Back in Black progression. Watch any interview with Angus Young talking guitar, he will give credit to Malcolm. Malcolm was the Wiser older brother, who formed the band and helped it along. After Bon Scott passed, Malcolm was the de-facto leader, and as far as rhythm guitarists go he's top 3 all time. Hard to argue with all that. No Malcolm Young, no AC/DC. And the whole band would agree with that statement.
Malcolm was/is the motor in their sound.

I don’t think Malcolm was ever not the leader. After the Dirty Deeds album, the label was concerned that the vocals were hard to understand, and there was talk of firing Bon.
Malcolm young was my hero since 1978, i play rhythm and i adopted his style...he taught me to play too....he was the shit...
I don't think anyone in music would disagree that Malcolm was the greatest rhythm guitarist in rock music.

I'm not even much of an ACDC fan anymore, and I gotta agree with you. To have THAT much precision, power, and liveliness in his riffs? If he isn't the best, he's at least the most important. Yeah, guys like Dave Mustaine, Brad Whitford, The Table, and anyone else's arguement are all fantastic in their own rights, but they do not hold a candle to Malcom.

So awesome that Scott is heaping such praise and reverence on Malcolm. Like a bunch of folks have already said, not many understand how valuable and how great of a guitar player he was. First song I ever learned on guitar was “Highway to Hell” (in 1988) and my guitar instructor said that Malcolm Young is “a rhythm guitarist’s wet dream”. I’ll never forget that! Fantastic video Scott!

The live versions of let there be rock in the 90s when Angus gets lost on his way out to the crowd and on his way back when u hear what Malcolm is doing its the same rhythm but more complicated each loop and the fact there's no timing mistakes that's when u realize how good Malcolm really was and there nephew stevie is awfully close and during those times when Angus got lost in the crowd I refer to as the time when malcolm finally got his own moment to shine

I was at the Hard As A Rock video shoot in the 90's, I was stood in a barn like building where they were serving hotdogs before they began shooting. I turned round an Malcolm was stood about two feet away from me with his back to me, I didn't realise it was him until he turned round...I shat my pants. He was my hero for as long as I can remember but I hadn't got the balls to speak to him...his music was everything to me, I didn't need anything more from him.

As Scott said, it's not what he played it's how he played it. The real beauty of AC/DC is that any guitarist can play their songs but nobody, and as Scott emphasises nobody, can make it sound like Malcolm did. A fitting tribute to the greatest rhythm guitarist who ever lived. Great to see someone like Scott being so humble about his own skills and not ashamed to gush about his guitar hero. I'm a huge Malcolm fan but a complete novice so it's nice to hear a legend have the same reverence. It's reassuring to know I must have a better ear for music than playing skill haha.

Malcolm would probably say "It's just what I do", but what he did meant so much to millions of AC/DC fans all over the world and obviously you too as a young rock fan. I never met Malcolm and didn't know him personally, other than what I saw and read about him. I think he would probably be at a loss for words and slightly overwhelmed at your high praise, but at the same time I think he would be very happy that his music and playing made such an impact on you and me as well. Just like you I still get an instant rush from hearing AC/DC's music today just like I did when I was a kid 40 years ago. This Sunday (11-18-18) will be a year to the day we lost Malcolm. He will NEVER be forgotten. R.I.P. (Rock In Peace) Malcolm we miss you!!
Awesome tribute. Scott is one of my favorite guitarists, and this helped convince me to buy my first Gretsch. And I'm loving it.
Angus may have gotten all the glory, but Malcolm was the engine of the band.

This just proves that all of the AC/DC members and especially Malcolm Young are a crucial part of rock n roll and rock n roll history. I seen them in Arnhem Netherlands back in May 2015. For my belated (as I was born in February) 16th birthday my mother took me there, I wish I still had the videos because I loved every minute of it! I remember my first one was in 2009 or 2010 (I cannot remember what year exactly!) but it was just so fun for me. I’m now 20 and I live in Aalten very close to Angus’s mansion, I do walk by it on my way out of the neighborhood every now and then but when they are home I don’t go by there.
I have a completely new appreciation for Malcolm Young as a guitarist now. Thanks bro.

Thanks for the excellent video Scott!! The image of Malcolm's sound "swelling" out of the Marshall amps will stay with me a long time. I've never been able to explain to friends why AC/DC was such a primal band for me or The Who for that matter. It was like I needed to feel it through my bones or die; desperate and ecstatic at the same time. Very lucky to have had them for so long. Play on.
Great video. My friend bought AC/DC's first album, brought it over and put it on my turntable, cranked it up and said, "isn't it great?". I said WTF is that? I asked him to leave the album with me overnight so I could listen to it a few times. Needless to say, I've bought every AC/DC album since
I felt the same. A buddy of mine back in HS (early '80's) played some AC/DC on the turntable at my house and I was like "what is this shit?". It was too raw, too loud and just didn't sound like "music" to me the first time. After a few listens, I "got it" and realized what they were about and have loved them ever since. Had no idea they'd get as big as they did over the years. Still one of my favorite bands to crank up when I need to lift my spirits.
Malcom and Angus were two of the finest to ever play and they deserve all of the respect they get.....................

AC/DC looks easy on paper. Scott makes a brilliant point. There are no other bands that can string 3 chords together, but a standard 4/4 behind it and absolutely rock. I love a lot of the modern metal like Periphery that are absolutely mental to play. AC/DC are the opposite technically, but goddam AC/DC have some magic that simply can’t be recreated.

Just hearing the riffs gives me goose bumps, i used to sit infront of my dads strereo with the headphones and listen to my black in black and dirty deeds records over n over, i would sit there on that 5' cord staring at album covers or look at everyone else doin stuff while i had it blasting in my dads big over ear headphones. Ac/dc fires off an auditory triggered emotion of back in the day memorys in me everytime i hear it, ac/dc holds a special place in my heart
I'm 66 years old and I still sit with my headphones on listening to AC/DC and still getting goosebumps when i hear those riffs. As with you, good memories every time. Long live AC/DC and RIP MALCOLM AND BON.

Best homage I have ever seen. Scott Ian had a double cut Jackson signature looking a bit like that Gretsch, kind of. Now he plays a King V and Dave Mustaine plays a Gibson Flying V. What has the World come to... :-p
