    There are other ways to ' pop up ', the most popular technique is to keep your focus on getting your feet thru under you, it requires flexibility and speed but there's another technique where you focus on getting your bum as high as quickly as possible , leaving more room under you to bring your feet thru. It's a little slower but it's easier if you have arthritis or are a bit heavy and it works. The one knee/ 2 knees technique is too slow and people always rest on the way up and it's unstable. Certainly squatting on the beach to free up the hip joints helps but you can do that at home so you arrive ready to go.

      +Ryan The Rock There are a number of ways you can get you feet to the right position you can practice the pop up you want on land to get the movement pattern and practice it enough so it becomes ingrained and second nature to pop up that way. Another way is to put some black duck tape were you want your board stance to be and that will give you a visual guide on were to get your feet .hope that helps

    Try doing that on a short board. You’re toes will be like “hey where something solid to bounce off “, because they’ll be pushing off water.

    • @SBSboards
      @SBSboards  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jack O'Neill depending on how much pressure you put through each leg, as if you imagine the board to be a seesaw more pressure you put on the tail the more you will stall/slow it down = create more drag but more control to turn. so depending how the board is stilling in the water you need it to plane smoothly across the water. so as long as it doesn't affect the planning speed or balance you will be fine. Hope that helps

    On the pop up, is it better for the back foot to land on the toes, or to the side of the entire back foot like this -> learnsurfschool.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/DSC_0205.jpg

    • @SBSboards
      @SBSboards  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      James Kolesnikovich Thanks for your question. Like the picture you sent us.It is some times personal preference but the side of the foot is what most usually go for as it is very stable and you can transition between a vertical stance to a lower stance to help keep the board trimming. for instance carving the surfboard to tucking in a barrel you would youse both the sole and the side . hope that's helps

    • @SBSboards
      @SBSboards  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      hi the pop up on a short boards is the same as the first example but off your knee's. If your pooing up on a shortboard you probably want to have a pretty good pop and had a lot of pratice

  • @Jay-fq8uz
    @Jay-fq8uz 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I put my traction pad just a little higher then where it should be now when I pop up my foot is already on the traction pad. Before it would only reach the the top part of the traction pad not the back. That is why I moved it up but now I'm starting realize that when I pop if I want to move my foot back for more pressure or to pump my foot gets tangled up because theirs is nowhere else to move it because it's already on the very end of the traction pad. Not that big of a problem for me but do you think I should just leave it or get a new one??? Will hider my progression or is it just fine and preference?

    • @SBSboards
      @SBSboards  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Dead poolmonkey Hey Jack No worries we have all done similar things with out a picture of you surf or your stance I might be hard to tell but if your traction pad is stopping you putting your foot further towards the tail this may have an effect on your turning as your back foot(tail foot) will have a harder time pushing down over the wider more volume part of the board. Were as if your foot was at the tail the response time is much quicker. I would suggest try it for a little while and then possible heat it up with a hair dryer and try move it back to the tail thanks :)

    my tip for a beginner is to not buy a board until you can surf a shortboard.
    You should just borrow a that way you can improve on a variety of boards without wasting money on a giant longboard or a foamie which you'll never use again

    • @prephasfallen5168
      @prephasfallen5168 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Wagzy if your hands slip off the side of the board you will smash your face and wipeout.

    • @raizario942
      @raizario942 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Wagzy also its bad habit. it creates a drag in the water.

    • @TahaNasser
      @TahaNasser 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also on bigger / steeper waves, if you put your hands on the rails, the water hitting your hands sprays everywhere including into your eyes. Makes it really hard not to wipe out haha

    • @sharkodon658
      @sharkodon658 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      also your board should be waxed so you wont slip or slide

    Does it matter if I go with my right leg on front? My right leg is the strongest. Thanks!

    • @SBSboards
      @SBSboards  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jack Jackk Hi Jack I is dependent on what feels comfortable when riding usually your strongest dominate foot would go at the back(tail) of the board because all movement stem from that back foot. but do what feels natural and fluid and Im sure you will find what stance is best for you :)

  • @TriumphAventura
    @TriumphAventura 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    why both arms pointing front like a t-rex? :D

    • @dewindoethdwl2798
      @dewindoethdwl2798 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Helps with balance, like the flexed knees giving a soft crouch. It all avoids a static or rigid stance which means you get chucked off. Also helps with steering, a bit of point where you want to go, body turns, board reacts and turns. Feels weird & silly at first. Best to over exaggerate in the early days. Just suck up any embarrassment, you're up and surfing. Those of us who surf understand you're in the early days - we all were at some point. In no time you'll find your natural dynamic surfing stance. Remember, the best surfer at the break is the one having the most fun - that could be you 🤘🏻🤘🏻
