Thank you!! Breaking it down like this has made it so much easier! Most videos just go straight from prone to standing, this makes way more sense!

Thanks for the variations! I'm 61, I recently had some lessons and bought my own board, that I ride in my lounge room only at the moment as I'm 6 hours from from the coast. I've got buggered shoulders, so find the pop-up difficult, and I'm trying different options, so these were good to see, I'll see if any fit my old lady efforts🤣🤣 Keep up the good work!

Thanks for sharing this, very instructive ! It's very hard for me to pop from the knees, how can I train to improve this movement ? Yet I am in a good shape , I can easily perform a lot of push-ups and I really don't understand why I can't do that "simple" thing. It seems that I am stuck to the bord ! Cheers.

Mid and lower body mobility/strength might play even a bigger role in the pop up than upper body strength

hi I am a beginner surfer but would like to learn this technique however I am struggling to pop up without using my toes (i' have been practicing at home) and just unable to flick my legs underneath my body, cant even create that momentum to even slightly lift the whole body as you are showing on the video. when i do it i just scratch my knees... I am 45 but light weight and reasonably fit. any suggestions, exercises or should i just continue with chicken wing pop up as I have heard some people just cant do instant pop up. thank you

Thanks for this! I found it super useful in transitioning from the chicken wing technique to the more snappier pop from the knee/thighs! Cheers!

I’ve been surfing circa 45yrs - will be 59 in a few months. I won a comp in big waves aged 26 and still get hoots and comments for vert reos and heavy carves - BUT, some days my pop-ups look like I’m a total novice! So often my front foot is up really fast but my back knee is stuck on the deck... not all the time but some days it will happen more than half the waves I catch! It’s so frustrating, especially since once I’m up I can surf pretty good...
Think I need to drop a few kilos and do some more back flexibility work.
    Totally sucks 😔

Hi I'm a coach form Costa Rica I usually teach with the back foot flat not on the toes. Can u explain me a little more of the benefits or reasons why u would prefer and also how to use it? Do u do it just in for a second? For how long are u on ur toes? Thank you in advanced

Any tips for making my back foot to land on the tail pad every time? It lands just in front of a tail pad and I struggle with manoeuvres and difficult to put it back on a pad because it kinda feels like I have to move front foot back too as it's just too wide of a stance. Thanks

30 reps a day until standard popup becomes natural and easy. Chicken wing is a crutch, that is ok in the beginning, but needs to be temporary method for you

I don't think pop up should be strenuous. Most people can get to their feet from the prone position, they just haven't needed to do it much before. If you practice it for 5 minutes you won't need to struggle with it when you're surfing. With tennis you learn to hold the racket, then swing the racket and finally you add the ball. Same with surfing, practice surfing before you get wet.

Don’t use hand on rails 🙈 especially as advice for beginners

For all the old farts... When you go to get up and you realize you're not getting up... You've been out of the water too long... Don't be afraid to train and regain skills you used to have... From one old fart to another
. But bringing your butt up in the air transfers your weight backwards which can lead to not catching the wave. Due to rocking effect. All momentum has to face forward and keep going forward. On a shortboard.
Maybe it works on a longboard

Ridiculous... the guy don't even know how to perform a good pop up... Put on your board your Blackfoot like that and you'll surely fall...
