Helen, I'm 61 and after about a month of failing to pop up, I found this video last night. I did everything you advised including making a mantra, and I not only popped up but surfed my first wave to completion today!! I cannot tell you how thrilled I am and how much I want to thank you! My mantra is FEET (together), HANDS (by ribs), EYES (up), TWIST (foot between hands), SLIDE (hands back between legs in balanced squat), UP (to balanced position). I kept repeating that mantra as I practiced at home and on beach, and when the wave came, I fully committed and calmly followed the mantra to a wonderful position on the board as the wave's magical energy carried me! What a great feeling! Thanks again! Realy means a lot to me because I thought I was hopeless.
Wow that is wonderful to hear, you rock! So happy that our vids have helped you so much, and you are feeling the surf stoke!!! Riding a wave truly is a magical feeling. Paula gives me hope. I'm 61 and learning in Florida. This can only help. Even with lessons I still have no popup. Thank you Pura Vida Adventures. I can't afford a surf retreat but this is the next, best thing. Mahalo.

This is spot on. As a part time surf instructor I find all of these points excellent. Time and again I am telling students #5 - twist as you pop up. This gets them to hopefully achieve placing the front foot/knee under the chin and be well balanced. And it made me smile at #6 when you emphasized keeping those fingers on the board in that position before standing. It is one of the fundamental little things that can make a ride successful. Well done and I look forward to more of your videos!
That was very useful. You have touched upon all the beginer errors of pop up. Being a beginer myself I can relate to all the mistakes that you have mentioned. Thanks 👍
great break down of the mistakes during pop up. I got to see immediately that my main issues are not keeping my head up aka looking down and not getting my front foot through far enough. Back to dry land pop up practice for me
Just started Surfing. I've been making all of these mistakes! Glad that I watched this amazing video. Thank you for clearing up the clutter. I'm better prepared for tommorow than I was for today.
THANK YOU SOO MUCH !! I couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong until I saw this video. I have tremendously improved my pop-up and am actually enjoying catching some waves.

Love your videos! I had my first lesson yesterday, and while I was able to stand up every time, I felt off balance and now I know why. I didn’t do the twist and was more goofy foot forward than sideways. Can’t wait to get out there again. Btw, I’ll be 50 this year. Yoga background has served me well. I’m hooked after one day. Maybe I’ll make it to CR someday ✌🏼💚
Thank you. Consistent with other advice but some more detail. Was frustrated with my last session. Especially as coming so close to close to catching my first green. But couple of your points are bang on with my mistakes. Good advice thank you 😊
Very nice, i see a lot of videos for beginners to find my mistakes and correct them and there is i learned that small tip about twist when pop up, helps a lot and not many talking about it. Thx
Where I live their aren't much waves so my mom said I couldn't get a board but watching this video I could visualize me making some mistakes and I could feel myself riding one correctly after watching this. Thankyou

Very helpful in gaining proper body stance for surfing. Touching on the balance and placement of the feet. And looking ahead. Tx my new manta is Bravo Charlie.
Looking down and going down reminded me of ridding a motorcycle. Newbies look at the ground in front of them, terrified they're going to fall, and they will. The instructor always reminded us to look towards were you're going to go, and not towards where you don't want to go. So look ahead towards to where you want to go. Now, I have to remember this when I attempt to learn how to surf later this year. 😊
Um eeer guilty of rail grabbing a lot. The slow knee thing yep done but as you mentioned problems, my back. When done a normal pop have collapsed back down on board a few times due to long term lower back damage. Eyes as you say are most important, funny thing there is a thing called target fixation which in cars causes people to drive into trees.. Am currently having physiotherapy so hope will improve my surfing and my security at work.
Thank youuuuu 🏄🏻♀️🙏 I’m learning and have big trouble with the takeoff it can be really frustrating 😭 I’ll have this video on mind next time I go to the sea 🌊🤩 greetings from Buenos Aires

I can catch some waves but my biggest problem is the fact that I can't put my front leg between my arms, when I go up I have to take an arm off the board to catch the wave. good video :)
My problem is that when I try to catch the wave I have to have my feet off the end of the board or I’ll nose dive. It also means I can’t pop up properly. My board is a 7’8’ minimal.
ive had this problem in the past, youve just got to pop up quick and turn down the wave asap (easier said than done i know), youre feet should not be hanging off the end of a nearly 8 ft board
Hahaha... no wetsuits needed in Costa Rica, we can promise you that! Hope you can make it down to surf with us sometime. :) puravidaadventures.com/costa-rica-surf-vacation-rates-2-2/
I find when I pop up on a shortboard I'm always sliding the board forward so i land in the middle but have maximum trim on the nose even if its a big gun I'm riding

How do you know what your stance is wether a goofy footed or regular
put a piece of wood or something surfboard like on the ground run at it and jump on it. your brain will decide the right stance usually.
John M Jones left foot back is goofy and right foot back is regular, and do the wood excersise
