As a disabled person I just want to say THANK YOU FROM THE DEPTHS OF MY HEART for doing what I am unable to do, and screaming the things I needed to hear someone screaming. What he is saying is completely true. In fact its the tip of the iceberg. I was left for 2 years on a folded up pressure mattress on the floor, with 6 hours of care a week to get all my needs met under this system. Food, bathing, cleaning, can healthy person do all that weekly in 6 hours? Did I get alot worse? What do you think. I had a Physics degree, now I've deterioated to the extent of having problems coherently speaking. They slashed all our NHS consultants so the bedbound are just left being told 'Theres nothing more we can do' by GPs.

Thousands of us disabled people are cheering this man on. What he's saying is absolutely true. At my last pip assessment, I was taken off the highest rate for care, because "I can cook". I can't, I'm bed-bound, I can't even turn over without help & there are days I can't even feed myself. Yet somehow the DWP did what consultants can't do, they cured me because they say I can get up, go downstairs & cook. It's ridiculous. The situation has deteriorated drastically over the last 10 years.
Rees-Mogg spouts the party line. He wasn't listening to this gentleman just spewing out the Tory ideology. He makes me sick. This current crop in charge are the worst. At least Cameron was a but more clued up! That's how bad this lot are that they make me compare Cameron favourably to them! At least he wasn't a dithering idiot, like Johnson or his holier-than-thou sidekick, plastic Catholic sidekick Rees-Mogg.

Thank you to everyone who commented & for your support & helpful comments.
I've tried charities. In the early days of being unable to work you could ask the DWP to send your paperwork to an organisation that filled it in with you dictating over the phone, as I struggle to use my hands. That department closed, loss of funding. Charities took over but they've all closed in my area due to money issues. All that's left is the CAB but they don't do home visits & won't fill out forms over the phone. I'm bed-bound & cannot go out. I'm even missing hospital treatment because it would be too detrimental to my health to go, even using patient transport. The benefits of the treatment would be outweighed by the cost. A hospital consultant visits at home once a blue moon. I didn't know they did this but my wonderful GP arranged it, saying I needed to see him.
In the 20 years I've had to rely on benefits, I've been assessed for benefits every 12-18 months. All but once I've been turned down first time & had to appeal. Once I went from scoring zero to well into the amount needed for maximum support. I've questioned it with DWP staff &, on more than 1 occasion, they told me they automatically refuse about 95% of forms the first time because they believe it will whittle out the ones who aren't really deserving. This is lunacy. Especially now, with no help to fill in the forms, it takes far too long. The only help I have is my wonderful wife who's own health has been damaged by looking after me. She delayed an operation because there was no one to look after me. By the time help was arranged, she was permanently damaged & is now disabled herself. Years ago the council arranged for care & paid for 10.5 hours per week, but when my main paid carer changed careers, they couldn't get a replacement so I've had no professional care for about 5 years now. There is no company in all of Yorkshire who can provide cover, there's that much of a shortage.
They have to come to do a home assessment as I'm bed-bound. I can't make a cup of tea, I can't even hold a cup, my wife has to feed me. Once they refused, saying I either went to their centre or would be turned down, even after my GP had written to confirm I needed a home visit. In the end my GP made an official complaint &, miraculously, an assessor saw me at home 2 weeks later.
I asked for a reconsideration when it happened last time but was told that I was too late. I rang up on the same day I received the letter, but there must have been a delay in it getting to me. Apparently though this was a lie. I called them in June to ask for a review because one of my conditions had worsened & I cannot move my shoulders now so cannot even touch my hair. When I mentioned what had happened they said I could have had a review. If you're late getting the award letter the time limit can be waived. She said, in certain circumstances, & this would fall into it, you have 12 months to appeal. Unfortunately the June call when she said this was a week outside that time so I've lost about £2k. That's a third of the benefit. I'm keeping a close eye on them this time & have rung them 3 times to see what stage we're at. I don't trust them. I've been told that I have to have an assessment because they're only doing non-contact assessments in clear-cut cases &, apparently a GP & hospital consultant saying that I cannot do anything for myself if it involves moving or getting out of bed (my wife has to even move me in bed to prevent sores), is not evidence I need help. It's never been this difficult to claim. I believe we should have to provide evidence so that people can't fake it, but when even doctors who know you well & specialists in your condition are disbelieved, it's gone too far. How a nurse or physio can overrule a consultant is beyond me.
I've tried my MP but he's a cookie cutter Conservative. I live in an old mining area which has always voted Labour. The last restructuring they changed & split 3 areas (2 Labour & 1 farming Tory area) into 2 & we lost a Labour MP. I've written to him 5 times now about different matters. I received a cut & paste job from the main Tory manifesto twice & didn't receive any replies to the others. He's voted every single time along party lines. If I don't get the full benefit this time, I'll have to talk to a lawyer. What they are doing should be illegal. There's a reason the UN's Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities has said that the UK government has caused "grave or systematic violations” of such rights to take place. It's completely true. I'm a fighter normally, disabled people have to be, but sometimes I'm too ill to fight.
Sorry to moan, but your kind words have touched me. Thank you all. You've given me faith that this country isn't as bad as it seems. 🙂

The problem is that we live in a binary society - you either fall into 'able bodied' or 'disabled'.
The tragedy is that the public feel that limiting 'disabled' to claiming benefits is the answer. It really isn't.
We need to make sure the private and public sectors engage with our disabled people. How do we encourage companies to recruit more disabled, whether degree educated or without any qualifications.
Having 'able bodied' as our workforce and 'disabled' on benefits is not the society we need.
No party, anywhere in the world, has ever come up with an answer. THAT'S the tragedy.

@@BiGAAAAAAAAAALLLLL I'd argue yes. The number of people actually comitting benefit fraud was never very high, less than a fraction of 1% of claimants, and the vast majority of them were only exaggerating slightly, not the stereotype of a person with no disability claiming thousands in benefits. The idea of the widespread benefit scroungers is pretty much a myth, a boogeyman made up by right wing papers. In fact, the amount of money spent on civil servants to stop benefit fraud and get back money from fraudsters is drastically higher than the actual amount of money claimed back from fraudsters - so you could absolutely stop investigating fraud altogether and you'd actually end up paying less taxes. In addition, the amount of damage the current policy does to legitimately disabled people is absolutely catastrophic and has lead to widespread poverty, sickness and death amoung disabled people, enough to get the UK investigated and condemned by the UN for its violation of disabled people's rights. What sense does it make to throw money away on civil servants that have been shown repeatedly to target disabled people as a group, just to claw back a ridiculously meager amount of money that doesn't even cover the costs of the policy to begin with? Everybody loses except the civil servants and politicians. It comes across as an emotionally driven campaign based on misconceptions about the prevalence of fraud and public misunderstanding of disabilities, stoked on by tabloid sensationalism, not a logically thought through evidence based policy.

If you think that this gentleman is not saying what thousands of people living with health conditions (& those who love and care for them) are thinking, then you are socially tone deaf. In this era there are more ways to make a better living through access to knowledge and opportunities in the internet than ever before in history. That applies equally.

Yes indeed - my brother had to take his wife to a place in Luton for her to prove that she has Multiple Scrolrosis - she has had it 40 years and is in a wheelchair but worked until she was 60 - when, because of her condition , she could no longer work , she decided to claim benefits. How humiliated she must have felt as a tax payer all her life having to prove her condition. A letter from her hospital consultant should have been enough but it seems they are obsessed with benefit fraudsters so they claim they needed to assess her in person. What a disgrace !

Many remained unviable and another series of closures, around 30, happened in ‘12, some others were subsequently sold to private concerns and others are now under control of the workers.

He also seems enraged that the DWP asked for proof that he is disabled (as opposed to claiming UC as a person looking for work) yet proudly says he used to work, ergo can work. So which is it? Does he want to seek a new job and get UC on that basis, in which case CP is not relevant, or does he want to claim disability living allowance and not look for work?

Undescribable amounts of respect for the gentlemen confronting Jacob RM. Its soul destroying to the see the cold hearted and out if touch way that he was replied too: "I'm sorry that's how you feel"...
Heartless.... No ounce of remorse for his involvement in the goverment responsible for creating this poor man's dire situation.

Would you be happy if I stood in front of you shouting, screaming and verbally abusing you? No, of course you wouldn’t. So please explain why you think it’s acceptable for him to do that and why you respect that behaviour?

    • @sam64893
      @sam64893 ปีที่แล้ว +5

If I was responsible in anyway for putting your life into dire straits my friend, I would assume your reaction would understandably be simlar, and no I would not like the hostilities, but if I had committed wrong doing I would attempt to rectify the situation not externalise the blame; if I was to assume that the gentlemen would approach me with a smile and tell me this, then that would be rather naive. When people are put into desperate times through the actions of people whom express such disconnect and lack of empathy, it warrants some kind of emotional reaction.
To clarify, I respect this man's courage to put himself in that position, not his nessaseralily his aggressive behaviour; but that doesn't mean I don't understand why he is behaving in that way.
I hope this explains my point. Take it easy my friend.

@@sam64893 You work on the assumption that JRM is personally responsible for this guy’s situation, and clearly he is not. He represents the government, so it you think that’s a fair point, then we can work back from there as, governments are elected by the people. Therefore every person who voted Tory is responsible. Where does it end?
That was not courage. It was pure disrespect and ignorance, taking advantage of somebody who can’t and would not behave in the same way in return. “warrants some kind of emotional reaction”….so it would have been OK for JRM to punch the guy?
You’re in the wrong here and this behaviour is the thin end of the wedge and why we have had two MP’s murdered in the last few years, and why we are struggling to attract the very best in our country to serve our country. Would you want to serve your country if you were subjected to shit like this? Of course not. JRM could go and work in the private sector and make 10x what he gets as an MP.
I sympathise with anybody having a hard time, and there are plenty of us who are, but this guy does not deserve respect. He needs to learn to have some dignity

    • @sam64893
      @sam64893 ปีที่แล้ว +3

My assumption is that as a member of the current goverment he has a level of sway in political affairs; you are quite right he is not wholly responsible for the situation but that wasn't my understanding to begin with. Additionally I do not recall JRM being elected, so him being in this position is at the behest of the party leader whom select these members to the cabinet. It is also my understanding that our current prime minister was not elected democratically by the people, therefore that means the people are not directly represented by this person.
Again, the reference to an emotional response ment the outburst of emotion, in the sence of shouting not in the sence of physical violence, as you are quite right, is not warranted.
Although, I do agree with you on the fact that this is not the most constructive and effective way of dealing with it and like you say when this behaviour becomes more accepted it leads to more extreme things; but I do think it's quite the jump in this situation for it to end in violence, and if it did, then understandably he would have been prosecuted.
On the subject of attracting the very best to our government, it is not as simple as them being intimidated by the people, or the fact that MP's have been murdered; I agree that this will play a significant part in the problem but the situation of why we don't have the people we need stepping up to power is much more complex, depending on more variables, than the negativity and disapproval of the masses; politicians do not go into goverment to be liked. Its my understanding that they would do it from a sence of duty, but that may be my naivety shining through.
I personally, wouldn't be discouraged by a likes of this man expressing his disgust about my involvement in a goverment, that is responsible for his situation; I would see this as an opportunity for feedback and I'd try my best to understand the gentlemens point of view, as if I was a politician I would assume that was part of my job to make the will of the people heard.
Vise versa I also see the value in understanding your point of view too as this is what a democracy is all about. I believe if that was my job, that I would be a representative of the whole contry in the best way I could, not bound by party motifs, but by the needs of the people whom give this goverment legitimacy.
Finally I do agree with you that mabey respect was the wrong choice of word but I do empthaise with the man and the way he reacted in the sence that he is in situation like you say, many of us are in; where despair is overwhelming and therefore I do believe he deserves recognition for the fact that he's voicing his situation in public and exposing himself in that manner, I do believe that some kind of understanding is warranted.
As for the dignity you propose he lacked, I do believe that he had most of his dignity taken away and thats way he was behaving in such a manner. But I do understand the point you are making about the principles of mutual respect, that we must exercise in these situations.
My personal view and the reason I posted the initial comment was to express my understanding of the man's situation, not to condone violence towards MP's or to insinuate that JRM should be thrown to the pyre for his relatively small involvement in the total spectrum of goverment affairs.
Again I hope this highlighted my opinions on the matter and its been nice to speak to someone whom makes a good counter agreement rather than a troll. Take it easy my friend.

@@sam64893 That is without doubt the most intelligent and respectful response I have seen on TH-cam for quite some time, and I think we found some common ground.
I empathise with the man of course, but my advice would be to visit his MP or write to him. I’ve done that on more than one occasion and although they are limited in what they can do, they do listen.
Yes, most politicians serve out of a sense of duty to our country, contrary to what some commentators think, and I think we all forget that sometimes. The very well educated could earn far more in the private sector, but they choose not to. I believe the constant abuse from the media and public is actually damaging to our country and counterproductive, and we need to find a way of reigning it in.
Anyway, really appreciate you taking the time to think about this and get your point over. All the best
