We do need both but in good balance. 6:41 Rees-Mogg bringing up the fact that the richter scale is a logarithmic scale should be a very telling sign that he just says words without understanding what they actually mean or imply. All he has actually said there is that the Richter scale is not a 1-10 rating system, but scales exponentially, meaning that the number given by the Richter scale acts as more of a multiplier. The Richter scale is a base-10 logarithmic scale, meaning that each order of magnitude is 10 times more intensive than the last one. In other words, a two is 10 times more intense than a one and a three is 100 times greater.
    If anything what he is saying here actually works very severely against his own point, as instead of being able to justify an increase of seismic activity of "only one or two points on the Richter scale" he has now very publicly admitted that an increase of that magnitude (excuse the pun) would be a 10x increase.
    The reason it works is because people won't educate themselves on what they mean either, but they'll very happily regurgitate this information in a discussion as if somehow it wins them an argument.
    He's just another inbred Etonian ponce throwing around big words to make it seem like his ridiculous education made him less of an embarassing failure. Human garbage.

  • @funkyfender1
    @funkyfender1 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Mogg is comparing apples to oranges in his counter argument about safety of fracking in the USA proving it would be safe in the UK! USA has many large areas of uninhabited land where fracking doesn’t negatively impact communities, which the UK, a relatively small island, cannot hope to replicate. Furthermore, I don’t understand his argument about ground tremors during building works. These tremors are at surface levels and caused by impacts from things like pile driving, designed to stabilise the site. They are short term and leave the site more stable! Fracking tremors are usually the result of the extraction process causing structural destabilisation deep underground due to the removal of the gas by destabilising the surrounding strata, leaving a more unstable and compromised subterranean structure, despite efforts to backfill voids by introducing ballast material. The flaw being that deep material has been under pressure over a period of history and is being replaced artificially at a low pressure and density. In other words it will compress further causing ongoing subsidence over time! His remark about the Richter scale being logarithmic was an attempt to try to blind us with science, which he clearly knows nothing about!

      @@mauricetrotter6010 Fracking will not lower our gas bills or significantly provide more gas for UK consumers.
      As far as I understand it, the price of fuel derived from fracking in the UK will be set internationally and so will not represent any savings for the UK consumers. We will not be able to sell ourselves our own gas at lower prices.
      Similarly, as far as I know, the amount of gas produced by UK fracking will be too insignificant to have any real impact on lowering global fuel prices. So what is the benefit? I suspect the real value of fracking will be to those engineering companies that get the government sponsored contracts and their share holders. This is when I begin to suspect that JRM and his shadowy 55 Tufton Street focus group supporters may have a vested interest in the continued use and extraction of fossil fuels? They are not concerned about consumers. Or, by the way, local communitites' concerns about having fracking on their doorsteps with all the associated worries about water, noise and industrial traffic?
      The current fuel crisis seems (to me) to be, not so much our dependence upon foriegn gas and our need for more domesticly produced gas alternatives, but the fact that we have to pay gas prices (with electricity prices being linked to gas) set internationally. Hence Putin's impact upon global prices. Fracking will not change this situation at all.
      Perhaps if we developed our own green fuel sources (wind, solar, wave, hydrogen) that were independent of global price setting, we may begin to have more fuel security and price independence? It would also be a more sustainable fuel source as well as a better use of government subsidy?
      I may be wrong. I may be too cynical to see the benefits of fracking. If I am, please explain how fracking will end the fuel crisis?

    but introduce this to an area that has never had any seismic activity,
    and watch the damage it will cause.

      @@kiwichickie1975 I think he's far more genuine than Starmer. Starmer seems too scared of the media to ever take any real stance on anything. He likes to dance around difficult questions and avoid making pledges. He's slippery as hell but what else can you expect from a lawyer? Red Ed has a much quicker wit and some actual semblance of a political instinct

    Such a shame that the British people didn't elect Ed Miliband back in the day. Not only cerebral and seemingly good-natured, but incisive and eloquent with it
    He seemed a little sheepish in his leadership bid, probably because of his brother also going for the bid, and not having long been prominent in the Labour Party. But the fact that he has stuck around, despite the rejection by the British people, where other MPs show they are opportunists by Leaving politics "Swiftly" to earn more money, taking advantage of their profile, and seems to be really growing into the role with confidence, is very inspiring
