Interviewing Tommy Robinson fans on St George's Day | Extreme Britain

- It’s St George’s day and hundreds of "patriots" are gathered here in central London to celebrate their Englishness.
Well, that and Tommy Robinson avoiding jail time.
After being acquitted of violating a dispersal order, Tommy and his mates headed for a rally in Whitehall where he and other far-right figures spoke more about a two-tiered police system than about England’s green and pleasant lands.
There were flags, singing, and the violence that is now customary at this kind of gathering.
We wanted to know why people were here.
Was it to celebrate England’s patron saint or one of its most infamous sons?

Nothing embodies Englishness more than cosplaying as a Greek guy in a fantasy uniform of a French religious order, while singing a song written by the grandson of exiled Polish Jews.

The irony of someone condemning the idea of 'holy' invasion and war while holding a St George cross flag...
In the Muslim community, the holy war - Jihad - is a religious duty, because of the universalism of the Muslim mission and the obligation to convert everybody to Islam either by persuasion or by force. Consequently approximately two-thirds of the ancient Christian world had been conquered by Muslims by the end of the 11th century, including the important regions of Palestine, Syria, Egypt, and Anatolia.
Obviously Christians condemned these Islamic ‘holy' invasions. The Crusades, beginning in the late 11th century, that were organised by western European Christians in response to centuries of Muslim wars of expansion. Their objectives were to check the spread of Islam, to retake control of the Holy Land in the eastern Mediterranean and to recapture formerly Christian territories. English Crusaders used a red flag with a white cross in about 1189. For them this flag was a symbol of resistance to the Islamic holy wars.

What does this matter? It's such a pathetic argument. There is so much more to St George than "he was a foreigner".
Just some lost, angry people who don't know why they're there or what exactly they're angry about. They talk about legitimate grievances (government corruption, lack of accountability, economic inequality), but the wrong people (Robinson) have latched onto them and fed them an illusory enemy.
Ditto Trump and the US.
I think you, like most elite Brits, look down on Tommy Robinson because he's from the working class - he doesn't have an Eton upbringing like most of the politicians, which makes him one of "the wrong people" He is not "Far right" hes a patriot. He's concerned that our democratic values are being eroded to accommodate Islam - which is anything but democratic. Why don't you learn what he's about rather than label him 'far right' or one of the "wrong people "
And BTW I don't think anyone there was "lost" - everyone, including myself, went there with a purpose and with a vision of the future where democracy and western values are embraced.
I was there not lost and i know what i am angry about
I just have to laugh at the white middle class, self loathing, smug, arrogance, 'white guilt' comments displayed below here: we all know that St George wasn't British. He wasn't Palestinian either as some of you ignoramuses have said - he died in 303, which was 1600 years before there even was a Palestine. St George was a Greek Christian from Anatolia which was invaded by Muslims, making most of the inhabitants Muslim. He's the Patron Saint of England because St George was a Christian and this is (supposedly) still a Christian country. God forbid that you, middle class elitists should be associated with British working class Patriots!
it's amazing that after everything that's been happening there's people like you who are still this ignorant. Nobody there is lost, they just know their cultural identity is being erased and country destroyed by mass immigration from completely different cultures that don't want to assimilate to the free, democratic world that the british have mostly created. It's really not that hard to wrap your head around is it? just use a few brain cells, it's honestly soo simple.

He probably looked like an Arab and died and is entombed in Syria/Palestine. He is not exclusively the patron saint of England, but also the patron saint of Bosnia-Herzegovina, Georgia, Ukraine, Malta and Ethiopia, as well as Catalonia and Aragon in Spain and Moscow Russia. Maybe if the police and politicians treated the English fairly and not like dirt then there wouldn’t be a reaction. Only country in the world your not allowed to be patriotic
Wasn't St. George a Turkish man (half Turk and half Palestinian)?
Technically no. He would have been born in a time long before Turkey was a thing.
But yes, basically from that part of the world.

Wow I AM naive... I thought "St George's Day? There'll be folks dressed up as dragons, pearly kings and queens, morris dancers, folks reciting Shakespeare, Robin Hood-esque archery competitions, bouncy medieval-style castles and pin the tail on the dragon... With merry lute music in the background and a big Last Night at the Proms-type open air concert with people under umbrellas but joyfully singing along to Land of Hope and Glory and God Save the King!
BOY, was I WRONG😅

Perfect description of why I closed the curtains
And then they wonder why the turnout is not that good.
The scary thing is that these people are allowed to vote...

Nationalists don't think with logic, they call themselves patriots but they'd see the country burned to the ground just to get rid of anyone who looks remotely brown.

They're the white working class who built this country and fought and died protecting it, but they don't talk like or share the beliefs of the highly educated and incredibly smart liberal elite in London, so they're the great unwashed masses to be looked down on and ridiculed by their betters like most of the commenters on here.
@EdgarHeed Half the ponces on here calling ordinary working class brits far-right for example, the media who also call ordinary working class Brits far-right is another example.
Got anymore stupid questions, you seem quite good at this?
@EdgarHeed What do the Palestinian protestors think about gay and trans people? I've seen nothing to say that no trans or gay people were welcome at this St Georges celebration.
@EdgarHeed So why aren't all you people calling Palestinians and their supporters far-right, when they hate jews, hate gay and trans people, and want a nation state only for Palestinians?
Got to love the support for St George.... Especially since St George might be hailed as a national hero, but he was actually born - in the 3rd century AD - more than 2,000 miles away in Cappadocia (modern day Turkey).
How did St George become the patron saint of England? (Turkish or otherwise.)
King Edward III made him the Patron Saint of England when he formed the Order of the Garter in St. George's name in 1350, and the cult of the Saint was further advanced by King Henry V, at the battle of Agincourt in northern France. Shakespeare made sure that nobody would forget Saint George.
The St. George's flag-. A red cross on a white field, was adopted by England and the City of London in 1190 for their ships entering the Mediterranean to benefit from the protection of the Genoese fleet. The English Monarch paid an annual tribute to the Doge of Genoa for this privilege.
@JenniSummers-vt5vzThe point, or one of them, is that these "saints" really don't represent the cultures they've been adopted by, so it's very ironic when knuckle draggers hold them up as cultural touchstones.

St George was Turkish, and his mum was Syrian 😂
He was Cappadocian Greek. Turks (Oghuz Turks, the Turks of modern Turkey) didn't arrive into Anatolia until well into the 11th century, about 700 years after St. George. Not trying to be a dickhead, but you know.
Being born in what is today modern day turkey 2000 years ago doesn’t mean he was Turkish, if you actually studied history you would know the Turks at the time of St George were living in Central Asia and didn’t come into Cappadocia until the 11th century.

George was an early Christian martyr who is venerated as a saint in Christianity. Sentenced to death for refusing to recant his Christian faith. He became one of the most venerated saints in Christianity, and he has been especially venerated as a military saint since the Crusades.
Lets also not forget that St. George is actually mentioned in the Quran
