Allen Edmonds $100 Ebay Challenge | Great Shoes For Less

  • Customers are always asking us, "What is a good shoe under $100?" The answer? Not many. Shoes under the $100 price tag are generally not made very well. Sure, you can find some here and there, usually on sale or factory seconds, but generally speaking, shoes under $100 are just NOT made well.
    Searching through websites such as eBay, or even Shopgoodwill.com, are GREAT places to find used, or even slightly used, shoes that are very well made and much, much cheaper. I can't tell you just how many Allen Edmonds, Ferragamos, Aldens, etc. that I have found on these sites for under $30. Even at that price, you still have money to refurbish them and still come out right at $100. Case in point, it's smarter to buy a lightly used high-quality shoe for $100 than it is to spend that same money on a cheaply made shoe for the same price. You'll have the high-quality shoes for much, much longer!
    Want to have your shoes refurbished? Looking for the BEST shoe creams, soaps, waxes, brushes, shoe trees...and much more? Find it all here:

    Keep in mind that when you buy shoes on-line you have no idea about the fit. I’m a Thrift store hound. You can find awesome deals if you know the brand names. I’ll find three, or four, name brand shoes (not my size), and trade them for a great pair of shoes or boots(my size), with my shoe cobbler.

    More than just tears and gouges on the upper, you also have to look out for surface peeling of the lacquer used on corrected grain shoes - even some AE shoes use corrected grain leather. When it's a hi-shine finish almost always a plasticy lacquer has been applied to the surface. Over time this cracks and then begins to peel away. Shoe polish won't fix this. To a lesser extent this also applies to shoes embossed with a pattern, such as scotch grain. Damage to the embossing, such as scuffs, can't be repaired or polished out. Scuffs on full grain calf skin that hasn't been embossed will polish right out, generally.

    Wonderful job, loved the video. Very well done, a pleasure to whach. Completely agree with the comment cobblers are so under appreciated. I'm from a shoe manufacturing town in Brazil, all my working life I've been in the shoe components business, started when I was 23 - just turned 59. During that time I've visited most shoe factories and repair wholesalers in the US. What a wonderful time it was back then. Will never forget the distinct perfume of leather & glue in a shoe factory, all the genuine, real nice folks I've got to know in my trade. In the 80's and 90's there was still a lot of shoe factories in the US, it's nearly all gone to Asia now, except for a handful of mid and small size factories. Maybe this pandemic will show that no country should give up all it's manufacturing. I still supply some soles to Allen- Edmonds to this day, have been to their factory in Port Washington many times in all these years, they make world class shoes there, definitely highest qualify and extremely comfortable to wear. They've halted shoe production to make 5k masks a day during the pandemic, to help the health system. Hope this ordeal will be over soon and life back to normal. Stay safe.

    • @TrentonHeath
      @TrentonHeath  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Kslater23 Good question. Most sellers will state the condition along with pictures from multiple angles. If you have questions or concerns about the condition, just ask the seller. Obviously, buying second hand has its risks, but it also has its rewards. As far as the lining and uppers, we're just wanting to know if there are holes or rips. Another question, I'd ask if not stated is how old and how often were they worn.

    This video inspired me to keep an eye out for a pair of shoes that was worth getting fixed up. I finally found them, a pair of Allen Edmonds strands. $15. The soles were worn out, but the uppers were good. Brought them to a local cobbler and paid $75 for a resole. But then when I brought the shoes home I was very very disappointed to see that he only did a half sole and didn't touch the cork. So much for getting something that comes close to a new pair of shoes.

  • @GamingDrummer89

    Started getting into dress lace ups earlier this year and long story short, I recently bought my first pair of Allen Edmonds on eBay! They're a model that's been out of production for probably 10 years now (Byron), but they were in great shape for $58 and in my size (11D), so I got them! Although the length and width were both perfect, the instep was too roomy, requiring me to put some insoles in the shoes, but now they fit very well overall! The previous owner also glued on these ugly yellow crepe rubber heel pads, so I had those pulled off (only $10 for the job). Now they're back to where they should be!
    I've got my eye on a second pair of Allen Edmonds to add to my wardrobe, but I'd like to try and buy that pair new (albeit factory seconds on sale). I like to try to support these companies as much as possible, but I'm also a bit on the cheap side ($120 is my max price for dress shoes), so it's a matter of waiting for the right opportunity! I think with brands above Allen Edmonds (Magnanni, Santoni, Carmina, etc.) that I may have to go with used shoes all the time, but that's not a huge deal. The one thing I learned, though, is not to go into one of these brands' stores and tell them that you're planning on buying used shoes on eBay...the guy at my closest Allen Edmonds store was noticeably put off when I mentioned the possibility of doing that.

    • @TrentonHeath

      Matt W Thanks for sharing! As we mentioned in the video, buying great, high-quality shoes, even if they’re used, is much better than buying cheaply made, low-quality shoes. Good for you for buying the AE’s! Keep your eyes open, as there’s always great deals online. Haha...yeah, you may want to keep that to yourself and not tell the stores. 😉

    My eBay Allen Edmonds experience:
    1. Popular models are always more than 70 bugs and you have to resole them (Strands, McAllister, Park Ave)
    2. Not so popular styles you can get for less than 30 bugs, and no resoling required. Like Derby’s, split toes and loafer. Must be patient
    3. Most eBay sellers know the price. Thrift shop deals are most times better. You can get shoes for 5 bugs, no resoling necessary
    I hate to spend all these shipping costs on eBay. It adds up quite a bit

      You can wear them everywhere at any time. When worn under wet conditions be sure to apply leather sole oil first. Btw - many people use rubber sole protectors that are applied as long as the sole is relatively new. Maybe that's an option for you, too. They also give you a better grip on a slippery underground.

    Awwwww...you didn't give us a close-up of the final production! Still a good video. I bought a pair of black, Allen Edmonds, 'Park Avenue' from Goodwill, for my 25 year old, in the Navy nephew, for only $20. The shoes were in great shape. Still had some sole life left in the them. I explained to him...they were $400 shoes brand new, and that when he wore the sole out...he could have them re-soled, for less than $150, and that these shoes could last him a near lifetime. I explained that they look classier and better than any shoe he could possibly buy for $200, and are a much higher quality. I am hoping it sunk in to him...what a great shoe it is. Classic. Goes with anything. Can wear it anywhere, a wedding, funerals, even on a date with jeans. Hoping he hangs on to them and appreciates what he has. Good video.

You’ll find high tech, expensive machines in shoe factories, but for the small cobbler shops, they just aren’t making many. That’s why most of us are still using old machines. Plus, the old machinery is very reliable.

    Can't go wrong with a pair of Allen Edmonds. I've had a pair of McTavishes for a decade, or so, and love 'em. The leather soles are showing a bit of wear, but it'll probably be a couple more years before I need to start thinking about having them re-soled.

      Allen Edmonds. Thursday Boot Company. Edward Green. Salvatore Ferragamo. Meermin. Alden. Magnanni. Crockett & Jones. Stay away from Florsheim, Bostonian, and Johnston & Murphy. Those brands have really fallen in quality the past 20 years.

    Any great shoes for women? I love the idea of leather soles. But women’s shoes are all about fashion, less about the Goodyear welt or the good polish process.
    I tried on a pair of leather-bottom Italian ballet flats in store once; I would’ve preferred laces or a way to get a better fit.

    I wish we still had someone local here who could do as good of a resole as what you guys do. The shop in town bought all of the now retired cobbler’s machines (who knew what he was doing) and I hate to put anyone down but their quality of stitching looks like something I could do by hand. Further they’re charging $110 for a pair of low grade leather resole and that doesn’t even include new heel lifts! Any chance I can ship shoes to you??!!

    • @TrentonHeath
      @TrentonHeath  5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Since I live north of the USA Canada border shipping shoes to the USA is frowned on by border security. I have watched a number of you videos on resolving shoes and boots. Two years ago I found an award winning cobbler locally and took him a pair Alden 40? For a resole. Then I asked if I could replace the soles with Black Crisp Soles under a new Vegatan mid sole. Well I got a look like I was out of my mind. Tried to scare me with a $200 quoat. The he did them for me. Best decision I ever made. Since then I have taken a few other boots and shoes for Re soling. Last spring he Re did two pairs of hood shoes for me a pair in black and a pair in brown. The black got the black crisp soles and the brown got the curved button walking soles. The black are for church, weddings and funerals ie good shoes. The brown are my got to town shoes you know for patios groceries etc. well I got spotted in my brown shoes by one of the counter ladies in the drug store. I explained about the shoes to her and her uncle who is a 75yaer old veteran. He tried on my shoes liked them and decided to have two pair of his old shoes modified. His friends at the local legion notice he was walking easier so they had old black shoes modified as well. Today Nov 11th I watched as about twenty member of the veterans marching in the parade had modified foot wear. They notice me as well and after ward thanked me for my suggestion as they thought last year was the last year they would walk in the parade. Also learned most not all had brown shoes modified for everyday use. Most of their wives had new walking shoes more sport shoe and were getting around a lot better. When they asked how I knew that their old comfy shoes could be resoled I mentioned watching shoe repair videos on TH-cam. You videos were on the list. I did tell them that the walking shoe sole was my idea. I was willing to try an experiment with my service boots first then my brown shoes.
    At the service today was my “friend” the cobbler. He had come over to see how his work was being received. He did warn me that his usual 7 to 10 day turn around was now a month due to new volume of customers. Turns out the veterans from one legion have been talking the veterans at a few of the other legions and with their friends at the lawn bowling clubs.

    I got a pair of Allen-Edmonds shoes that do not need any work and are in 95% condition.... from GoodWill ...a find for about $15 delivered. They are the 'Bradley' model and barely worn at all ... no marks anywhere. A local woman sold a me a pair of Brazil-made Johnston-Murphy casual lace-ups in very nice shape and well made for $10 (maybe split from the boyfriend, etc... who cares?) thru the FaceBook 'marketplace' and other local items are available cheap, too (guitars, jeans, jackets, etc.).

    I resell a lot of men's shoes so I completely enjoyed this. There's nothing like good leather shoes and, a great cobbler! I'd love a video on how to clean grime off a pair of good quality leather shoes. I mean shoes that are still amazing quality but have not been cared for and the built-up dirt is quite heavy so as to darken the shoes at the toes and heels and along the sole. What is a good shoe cleaner and/or what other kinds of cleaners would work?

    • @TrentonHeath
      @TrentonHeath  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      dos dandelions Thanks...glad you liked it! We’ll definitely do a video over that. You can also use acetone or Saphir Renomat (which we sell) to really strip everything off the shoes. After doing that though, definitely condition them to put moisture back into the leather.

    There was a pair of shoes in TXMAX Manchester for £800 size 8 mens. They had them on for £200. I tried them and they fitted, but they were like planks of wood with no give in them whatsoever. I'd have bought them if they would have at least been nice to walk in.

    I used to wear Lloyd, or Boss Oxford style brogue shoes, but since the past 15-20 years, mostly only sneakers, also from the same brands, and others. I'm usually being a bargain hunter, and always buy shoes at winter or summer season end, therefore, i can save up to 50% of the original price, which is a good thing. Back into the 80s, even 90s, we've had a good shoemaker, whereas my father was going there, for soles renewval of his shoes, and mine, too. Nowadays, it's all about being "cost effective", cheap production plants into 3rd world countries, and also into asian countries....and the same kind of quality like some 30-40+ years ago will cost you nowadays about 5 to 10-times more...sad, but true.
