Over the last two years, I have lost considerable weight, so none of my clothes fit and I'm rebuilding my wardrobe. The theme I'm going for is "country gentleman", so tweed will definitely play a role.
After many years of being a blue collar worker, I have finally retired and decided to go from the wearing of blue jeans and work shirts to something a bit more fashionable. I am of Scottish heritage and have always wanted a Harris tweed sports coat and finally ordered one in brown/olive barleycorn. Just trying it on with a pair of blue jeans and a green plaid shirt was a great look that made me wonder why I hadn't bought one before.
Traditional and a bit stuffy…just two of the reasons why I love tweed! Also love your channel. The art of being a gentleman is peril. Thank you sir for your refreshing content.
Brilliant comment! Hear, hear! 😁😁😁More important than the garments in themselves, the whole concept of the gentleman is under assault. This is part of a cultural war, no kidding!
I've lived almost my entire life in South Florida so tweed was out of the question. A few years ago I moved to Boston Massachusetts with its cold winters. This year I had my first two tweed sports coats made for me and I love them for all the reasons you outlined.
Tweed is created by artisans. It is a beautiful and luxurious fabric turned into warm, elegant clothing. Tweed is a statement of enduring good taste, despite it being worn by the aristocracy with the likes of the malthusian mumbler Charles or the notably fascist sympathiser Edward the VIII. I love the stuff.
I couldn’t agree more Ash. I recently upgraded my first suit to a nice tweed three-piece number (charcoal herringbone), and LOVED it. It is custom made for me, so fits beautifully- and it is so comfortable it feels like I’m wearing a tracksuit. Now I want tweed everything. Ive bought a couple of Harris tweed waistcoats, flatcap, even a tweed-covered hipflask ( for medicinal purposes, of course). Tweed is the best.
Back in the 80’s I had a Harris tweed shooting jacket in grey herringbone with elbow patches and a shoulder patch. I loved this jacket but it seems as I got older it became smaller for some reason. To this day I’m still puzzled to why that happened.
Thanks. For a man who loved his style in the 90’s as a 20yr old, now in my 50’s I’ve lost all sense of style but am trying to get a better look that just jeans and a t-shirt all the time. You’ve got a new subscriber here Thanks again, Rob
Bought a Harris tweed sport coat in Scotland almost 10 years ago...absolutely love it. I just wish it was cold enough to wear it more often...blasted global warming.
This made me think 🤔 a gent should own at least 2 tweeds , Just went up to my spare wardrobe 12 tweed jackets, brockelhurst ,magee, harris and bladen .not counting waistcoats ,ties and one magee overcoat !!! Been ordered by the little lady NO more ! {and this is the polite version} ....top channel Ash carry on with the good work 👍
As an immigrant in Canada, I absolutely agree that any gentleman should own a Harris Tweed jacket in their wardrobe. I really want to order one for my father's 70th birthday! The Scotts really know how to dress properly!
Excellent presentation as always Ash. My late grandfather always swore by his Harris Tweed jackets. I have lifted mine out for today, as I'm off to conduct rehearsal for tomorrow's remembrance parade. Uniform pressed. Medals polished. Poppy affixed.
Beside my many tweed jackets I am looking for a hunting tweed jacket to use for outdoor activities. Belted at the back if possible. Hard to find. Cheers. BTW Mr. Bean wears a nice tweed jacket.
Твид великолепный материал с замечательной историей, с великолепной фактурой и внешним видом, мне он очень нравится. К сожалению его мало носят, по крайней мере в России. Очень интересный канал Ash, спасибо 👍🤝
i always find it so interesting that some fabrics, like tweed, linen, knit wool, etc. when used in certain contexts was considered distasteful or low-class since only the poor would have not been able to afford the more "proper" fine worsted and silk clothing of the upper class for different occasions. we now consider these fabrics expensive or "high-class", both because the more aristocratic have adopted these fabrics, and because the aspects that made them cheap in their heyday - locally spun and woven, made in small batches, domestic industry - has now made them rather expensive materials compared to what most people are used to today.
The last few years I have started wearing Harris Tweed. I work at the bottom of the wage scale as a caretaker on a council estate. I like to look sharp when I go out and I also do the distinguishes gentleman’s ride for charity. I by from EBay for as little as £25-£60. Best buys ever
Never let your job define your style sir - I work an entry-level job and take great pride to looking as smart as I possibly can. We can all present the best possible version of ourselves to the world everyday!!
For the past 50 years I've always had least one tweed jacket in my wardrobe and my first choice is always Harris Tweed, my father used to have a length of tweed sent down from the Islands have a local tailor make him a sports jacket and matching flat cap.
Great video on tweed! Sean Connery really does look amazing in his tweed. I have two tweed sports jackets and an overcoat. The fabric is designed for taking on the elements. It's tough and interesting. I think it's perfect for the modern chap.
I definitely agree that Daniel Craig's Bond character seriously missed the fashion mark when they did not make use of Tweed in his wardrobe. His recent movies had a certain visual style where Tweed could have enhanced the look and feel of his movie character.
I love tweed and my tweed sports jackets are some of my favorite and most often worn garments as well as my tweed flat caps being my go to headwear. I agree that it bridges the gap between casual and formal wear perfectly and the range of colors and patterns available is amazing.
Impressive research, especially regarding where the name came from. Love a tweed jacket, especially Harris Tweed. Thanks for another really interesting video
One of the items of clothing that helped me re evaluate my dress sense at about 35 and help me dress more age appropriate was a Tweed jacket. They look great with a pale blue shirt, dark blue jeans and chunky brown Brogue boots, dive watch peeking out of the cuff. Essential Smart casual imho.
Another fine conversation. Nice to see the jacket/trouser pairing. I just purchased a tweed safari jacket from Spier and Mackay. I will be bringing it to the tailor for alterations tomorrow. Nice chat!
Hello Sir, from Germany a thumbs up for your super TH-cam channel. Your background knowledge on the history, fabrication, texture and weave of a traditional garment like the Tweed Jacket is truly amazing. In each of your videos one is well entertained, one learns a lot and it is just fun to listen to such a pleasant narrator. Thank you very much for your efforts and time to make such engaging videos. It's s a truly pleasure!!
As you say a very over looked garment, thanks for a great video. I was waiting for you to mention Donegal tweed. To see it at it's coolest take a look at Steve McQueen in Bullitt, on and off the set.
Thank you very much for this video - I totally love tweed Ash and thoroughly agree with you. I have 6 quality Harris Tweed jackets, 3 caps and a pair of gloves as well as 3 Donegal Tweed ties. One of the drawbacks of summer weather is that I have to stash them away for a few months! Tweed did make a renaissance very roughly 8 years ago on the high street, but the offerings, whilst looking trendy, lacked any level of quality by comparison to Harris Tweed and its peers. For a closer look at the manufacture of Harris Tweed and it’s history, Hugo Jacomet made a video about it on his TH-cam channel, Sartorial Talks. Have a great weekend 👍🏼
Wonderful defence of the glorious tweed jacket. To the hell with those who scorn it! 😁 Seriously; such is the incredibly wide range of colours and patterns offered by the tweed jacket that every elegant gentleman could/should have, at least, three tweed jackets in his wardrobe. PS: Never wear them with jeans! In fact, NEVER wear jeans! 😁
I love tweed...l have a wonderful collection of sports jackets made of this incredible material. All through the winters l wear them almost on all the formal or informal occasions .
i own a fair amount of tweed, my favourite being my original gieves and hawkes jacket and my harris tweed waistcoa made by a company called map brand. they go really well with my bergundy armani jeans.
I got a tweed overcoat from my great grandfather. That coat has been worn since the 40s and it’s still in perfect condition. I do want to get a tweed sports coat some time.
I couldn't agree with you more ol boy. Tweed is the functional yet prestige approach to style. I love my Farlows tweed garments. I will have to add a sports blazer to my wardrobe now. Thank you for yet another splendid video, you are doing your subscribers a great service sir. Jolly good show i say.
Thank you for this argumentation. I must include a tweed jacket in my wardrobe. When I travel overseas, I am forced to keep my clothing to a minimum. The tweed jacket seems like a perfect jacket to include.
I've always liked tweed jackets. First one i bought was in 1997, which i purchased for just £50. The second one i got was wenty years later, which was a heavyweight one from Slaters, followed by a further 3, (2 from brook taverner & 1 from Rackhams) which despite being stylish were medium weight fabrics. Then,.. 2 months ago, i had a 3 piece Ettrick suit made to measure from Bookster tailoring in Gloucester, Uk. The quality is impeccable & at 640 grams is perhaps of the heaviest yarn. Infact, i've ordered another one & quite possibly will order a 3rd one too. For the qunintessential english man
My son in Wales (We are Australian) is in the middle of getting a hand tailored Tweed Jacket for his birthday. Well it may not be finished by his birthday but its aimed for that. The tailor is retiring soon so I am lucky he was still available. I don’t know whether I will ever be able to afford any other pieces for him but this piece at least will be his. He is very fashion minded.
Thanks, Ash. I should have mentioned that, according to my university age daughter, tweed is very on trend for young gentlemen. First time in my life that I’ve been ahead of the game. 🤡
Steve McQueen wore a brown tweed sports jacket in the iconic movie Bullitt. I brought a similar jacket and had elbow patches sewn on. All I need is a vintage Mustang car and the roads of San Francisco...
hello i love the fabric tweed , i have 6 picadilly (newsboy) caps from harris tweed, 5 tweed waist coats. i am set for life so for me it is tweed indeed.
Best wish from Japan! How elegant and gentleman channel! I find this channel searching for floris 89. Because a love classic fragrance! Looking forward to more of fragrance videos. Please review some fragrance of Truefitt & Hill.
Ash, another great video. Tweed is my go-to fabric especially in the spring winter and Autumn. Own about 8 Tweed jackets.. weed is also the gentleman's country clothing it is also synonymous with hunting and shooting. Very popular with the gamekeeper's as as you implied it is a form of camouflage. Hope you had a good Remembrance Day. Thank you to all of us men and women who served. 🇬🇧🇺🇸🙏🌷Cheers Ron
Tweed seems to be the unofficial material of choice for archaeologists and I am always looking for little accessories or ways I can wear my jacket with different outfits. It definitely sees much more use than my business suit.
As a American we have a small group that goes pheasant shooting......its wellies and tweed the dogs and the whole lot. I have picked up a few harris tweed coats from vintage shops and had them altered...I watch videos of the shooting events in England on the great estates...we have a lot to learn from those gentleman.Where I am in Upstate NY we are lucky to have a Hunt club as I have horses though less then I did from a divorce... but I have gotten my wind back under my sails as they say, and I'm powering on alone......
Wow! You are 100% correct about tweed jackets etc. About a year ago I brought a Harris Tweed jacket from an op-hop here in Te Kuitu New Zealand for a very low price $5.00 (£2.50 UK). And there's no holes except where the holes should be i.e. button holes. There's no pilling, keeps me very warm in winter sometime I sweat, it is that great keeping my heat in! Rain? What rain? My Harris Tweed jacket is like a force field when it comes to rain and cold! If anyone wishes to buy one (spring/summer time good to buy as will be on special (end-of-season) I highly recoomend all chaps, gentlemen (upcoming) to buy one today! The one piece of tweed I would love to own is a waistcoat or three piece tweed suit!
Great video. I’ve a tweed I love but it’s about 11/2 cm too small. Fit is king with these I know so either lose the timber or buy another ! Great video as always.
Great video Ash! A massive favourite of mine! I have a vintage green and brown herringbone Aquascutum Irish tweed jacket that I love. Lots of vintage details like flapped patch pockets and swelled edges...Actually very similar to this videos thumbnail! I also love my Harris Tweed flat cap and Yorkshire tweed tie. The Permanent Style Tweed is just stunning, and I'm very much looking forward to having something made up in it! Keep fighting the fight for these enduring classics!
In case some viewers are still not convinced: browsing through the online shops of mills such as Fox Brothers ("the merchant fox") has been a stunning experience for me. Such a variety of tasteful yet vibrant patterns and colours... Since many of their offerings are based on historic designs from the Fox Brothers' archives, one can easily get a feeling for the intense vividness of tweeds worn a hundred years ago. Thanks for the video, Ash!
@@TheChapsGuide weaving cloth exclusively in Britain comes at a cost, that's true. However, if one is inclined to commission just one fine piece made of tweed, it's a justifiable investment, I think. BTW: Their CEO Douglas Cordeaux is one of the best dressed chaps around.
Hi Ash magnificent topic and timed so well as I'm getting my Tweed jacket from Moss bros on Monday which I'm so looking forward to and your so right it goes with anything from Jean's to chinos!!! magnificent video as always. fancy the same jacket as yours but I'm very partial to green tweed wish me look Ash.
I love tweed. On the one hand it looks smart enough for wearing when going out to town, but on the other it is hardy enough for garden work or diving through bushes to try and retrieve my cat.
Just got my brown tweed jacket last night and I totally dig it. Great with Chuck Taylor's, jeans and a T-shirt or brogues, proper trousers, shirt and tie.
Just ordered my first Harris Tweed blazer 💪. Sage green with a light purple window pane pattern 🤯🤯🤯🤯. Thanks for the solid advice and and persuasive argument as to why it’s still cool !
Great channel Ash and thank you. I think sport jackets for a lot of men is a great place to start as like you say tweed does come with some 'baggage'. Men just need an introduction to jackets again... A good brown cord jacket is a wonderful, informal and versatile place to start. A work colleague wore one with jeans and a black t-shirt on an evening out and it really popped. It shouldn't but looked great. I bought one and it's a slippery slope to jacket nirvana... Thanks again for a gem of a channel.
If I may, you wear a fantastic sport coat in that video. It seems to render like a dark green in the video and I can't tell if it's true to its color, but it's great. As fall is approaching again this year, you might consider doing a video on how to pair ties with tweed. From memory, you have more than one tweed jackets, so you might have some tips to share with examples from your own outfits. Most ties have a little too much of a satin finish for something like tweed, but some specific examples might help see how to do it well. The tie in this video seems to work. What is it made of and what is weave and texture like up close, if you don't mind?
Red, blue, sage, green, yellow, brown - almost all colours can come up with tweed, which on their own, would be just overwhelming. The different colours and different patterns make tweed so versatile. And it comes in "lightweight" as well, so it is not just for the colder months. And if you wear a tweed suit with 'plus fours' (knickerbockers) you're incredibly stylish! Or indeed a Norfolk jacket. Just one point: don't wear tweed jackets with jeans, it's a breach of style - wear them with corduroy, chinos, moleskin or cavalry twill - or indeed with tweed!
Thanks for this video. I’ve always wanted a tweed jacket but they’re difficult to find that aren’t blended with cheaper materials. Still looking though 👍🏼
Doctor Who also brought tweed back into fashion. Although, it was there from the beginning with William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton & (my favourite) Tom Baker, Matt Smith more recently made the geeky 'History Teacher' look cool.
Because of their durability there are lots of good options for less than £50 on eBay. If you keep aside another £50 for any repairs or small tailoring you are in a great space (I've also had one which smelled so bad I've had to bin it)
Over the last two years, I have lost considerable weight, so none of my clothes fit and I'm rebuilding my wardrobe. The theme I'm going for is "country gentleman", so tweed will definitely play a role.
How good to find your channel. We definitely need more 'chaps'......rather than 'mates', 'buddies' and 'guys'!
I concur. Style over fads, quality over convenience, fit over comfort, and tweed over polyester.

Great video. I’ve a tweed I love but it’s about 11/2 cm too small. Fit is king with these I know so either lose the timber or buy another ! Great video as always.
Hi could you do a video on Mens civilian dress codes for Sandhurst Military Academy?
I love Merchant Fox and they are only situated about 30 miles from my home, but their prices are fierce!
Thank you. What's good enough for Sean Connery as James Bond is good enough for me. Tweed jacket in my wardrobe, be prepared to be worn.
I feel tweed is a standard that all coats should be held up to.
One is not enough.
I love tweed. On the one hand it looks smart enough for wearing when going out to town, but on the other it is hardy enough for garden work or diving through bushes to try and retrieve my cat.
In America, tweed sport coat is usually associated with the professors of older age
Just got my brown tweed jacket last night and I totally dig it. Great with Chuck Taylor's, jeans and a T-shirt or brogues, proper trousers, shirt and tie.
Right on! A perfect companion !!!
@@TheChapsGuide absolutely.
Just ordered my first Harris Tweed blazer 💪. Sage green with a light purple window pane pattern 🤯🤯🤯🤯. Thanks for the solid advice and and persuasive argument as to why it’s still cool !
Great choice - perfect for the cool, winter season.
I enjoy wearing my Harris tweed sports coat
Great channel Ash and thank you. I think sport jackets for a lot of men is a great place to start as like you say tweed does come with some 'baggage'. Men just need an introduction to jackets again... A good brown cord jacket is a wonderful, informal and versatile place to start. A work colleague wore one with jeans and a black t-shirt on an evening out and it really popped. It shouldn't but looked great. I bought one and it's a slippery slope to jacket nirvana...
Thanks again for a gem of a channel.
Great topic Ash, I love my Tweed!
Indeed he should Harris Tweed is a wonderful product
If I may, you wear a fantastic sport coat in that video. It seems to render like a dark green in the video and I can't tell if it's true to its color, but it's great.
As fall is approaching again this year, you might consider doing a video on how to pair ties with tweed. From memory, you have more than one tweed jackets, so you might have some tips to share with examples from your own outfits. Most ties have a little too much of a satin finish for something like tweed, but some specific examples might help see how to do it well.
The tie in this video seems to work. What is it made of and what is weave and texture like up close, if you don't mind?
My sartorial goal for 2022 is to get the best quality three piece suit in tweed I can afford, and a tweed overcoat too, by autumn.
Great aspiration sir!
Make sure you get a Double crutch on the trousers, Tweed is woven more loosely than other cloth, so it wears easily
Tweed is cool! I live in the tropics so no tweed for me sadly. I miss your "studio".
I enjoyed the video and I totally agree with you, tweed is fantastic🙂
So is your channel !!!
Agreed! I have six in my fall-winter rotation.
And also an overcoat as well as a very heavy tweed suit by the way. But it must be quite cold to wear it comfortably, so definitely a mid-winter item.
I agree with you, well done.
I have loved tweed since I was a teen
Yes, sir
Great video once again!
I feel the need for tweed!
Thanks for this video. I’ve always wanted a tweed jacket but they’re difficult to find that aren’t blended with cheaper materials. Still looking though 👍🏼
I'm 37. Canadian. And tweed has always cought my attention. I wear flat caps. Or as my English mate called it "cheese cutter"
