Nothing like finding the Harris Tweed Orb on a garment in the thrift store. Play it cool until you've paid and walked out the door, then laugh maniacally and run for the car.
My dad was a dapper Englishman who taught me about Harris Tweed early on. I always thought he looked best in his tweeds and those jackets looked fantastic all his life. Anything made from Harris Tweed will wear like iron and is well worth the investment. Much respect to these artisan weavers.
Just found my first Harris Tweed sport coat at a local thrift store made by a local tailor in the mid 70's. The fact that it was in my size made it a true prize.
Last year I purchased a Harris Tweed hunting vest (gilet) from Bucktrout Tailoring. Ever since then I have been addicted to the quality and have been slowly adding to my collection. This stuff is tough and timeless so I know I will have it for years and don't mind the extra cost.
Hi Carl, as usual, another informative and concise vid, thank you. I have a Harris Tweed overcoat, with raglan sleeves, that I purchased from a California thrift store in the 1990s and didn't wear it much as a younger man. However, I just pulled it out of the closet recently and will be wearing it this winter here in Wisconsin. Not only is it made from Harris Tweed but it is a vintage piece, probably made in the 1950s. I'm happy I never got rid of it; I appreciate the garment more now.
I love Harris Tweed. I've got a vintage overcoat (£34 on eBay), a sports jacket and a Newsboy hat that are all Harris Tweed. I'm sure I'll get more pieces in the future too. It's such a classy and stylish way to keep warm in winter.
Absolutely, and there are so many great second hand options out there. Since its so hard wearing you can find pristine examples in any thrift store or Goodwill.
Another fine video Carl. I was first introduced to Harris Tweed while in high school, many years ago. I worked part time at a Men’s Suit and Furnishings store. We sold Harris Tweed suits, sport coats, pants, etc. I purchased a Harris Tweed sport coat, which was one of my favorite pieces of clothing. Certainly a classic which withstood the test of time. Sadly, I did not save this classic. Bottom line: I wholeheartedly concur with your assessment of Harris Tweed.
Highly interesting video, Carl. I have a Harris Tweed sports coat. Bought it a number of years back, but it is still in great condition. I wear it when I get a chance. After your video, I need to check if it is authentic. I recently bought a dark blue Boyne Valley Knitwear Patchwork Shawl Collar Cardigan, which is a classic Irish sweater from the Boyne Valley of Ireland. It's an area known for their sweaters. I love men's wear that has historical significance. I think this is a great video and a good genre for you, "The History of..."
Thank you, I'm really enjoying it too. It reminds me of college because I find three separate and reliable sources for the information and to to make it as succinct and enjoyable as possible.
Living on the beach in Southern California, there are items that you review that probably won’t be of much use to me, but I watch all the videos anyway. Your clips are all intelligent and interesting; keep up the good work.
Great video Carl. As a Brit with some Harris Tweed I can vouch for its qualities and magic. Some of the tweeds are a bit flatter and more ordinary but some (like Carl's one with all the colours) are more of a "hairy" texture with amazing natural colours (I think they use natural dyes the colour of the Islands landscapes). In my opinion there is no mistaking the genuineness of these thicker hairier tweeds. They would be impossible to fake and when you see one you know it's the real thing. Harris Tweed has a lot of warmth to it. Maybe it's our equivalent to the great Macinaw wool garments you make in the US
Thats an excellent comparison, they are to very similar fabrics in many ways. It's that beautiful complex texture and color combination which has an almost mythical quality.
I picked up a genuine Harris Tweed Jacket that fit perfect and in first class condition for £10.00 at the local junk market just last week. It has cost me a Kings ransom to develop the attire I will wear for a Pullman steam journey to Stratford on Avon next month. Even down to the boutonniere and tan and white brogues...
Really awesome video Carl. You have changed my views on many different products especially footwear! Just ordered my first pair of nicks and loving my iron ranger red wings thanks to you!
In my younger days I had a Harris Tweed jacket I picked up from Deseret Industries. It was brown with leather knot buttons, just beautiful. I donated it again recently as its just too hot to wear with regularity where I live now. I also used to have a Harris Tweed flat cap in a green color but in time the bill broke down and it was feeling too snug on my head so that too left me. Now I don't have anything but I'd love a vest for cooler weather, especially one with the same cloth for the back and not the satin that's normally seen.
I was lucky enough to have my father-in-law give me his and never even knew what brand it was. I did read the label on it but never really understood The prestigiousness of it till now. I’ve been wearing it to work outside while I do construction, ha ha. But it’s so warm.
Well I'm sure you could wear it to do some work, but that would be like using a Corvette to move lumber. I say tailor it to fit you perfectly and wear the hell out of it!
Considering how expensive the clothes are you can get them here in Germany on Ebay for an apple and an egg. I now have five jackets and each one has a different weave pattern. Fantastic.
I found a book about the history of motorcycle racing in England with many great old photos, and of course, many of them wore... tweed! xD PS: I hear that wool will stay warm even if it gets wet in the rain. Mine keeps me warm in a sprinkle, though I've never been soaked.
awesome!! I love Harris Tweed, I have a thick winter weight blazer from them in navy herringbone. it's stunning, and when you combine it with a scarf, you don't need a top coat. Speaking of imitators, I have a similar jacket from Abraham Moon & Sons which feels identical in quality but was a bit cheaper. Both jackets are from J Crew
Your endorsement of wool has inspired me to look around my own local area (Iowa) for high quality wool goods. I just purchased a few pair of the Fox River everyday adventure light merino wool socks out of Osage, Iowa and couldn't be happier with the style and quality. Would love for you to review. Thanks and I wish you the best
I remember having a harris tweed cap that my father gave me but I wasn’t into at the time and gave it to a thrift store. Regret today but oh well, it’s not like I wear hats anyway.
Love your "History Of" videos, would love to see a history of Duluth Trading Company, Levi's(even if it IS probably the best know of stories), Dickies, and Other Brands
I have 20 plus jackets. All bought 2nd hand, sorry pre-used. Does that make me odd? My son has a deep suspicion of anything Tweedy. I can't help being naturally trendy.
Beautiful material, I found a Harris tweed jacket and waistcoat the other day at a charity shop but it was two sizes to big, It was in mint condition, price £40 bargain!!
I'm in Japan - headed to Shinjuku _right now_ eyeing up a custom Harris Tweed in a wonderful grey barleycorn weave. Never saw such a weave. It's beautiful. Probably can't afford it but... _meh_
I need something from harris tweed - brooks brothers makes some awesome ones and I actually bought one last year but alas it was too tight! I think I rather go vintage anyway! To the thrift store!
I had my sister get me a cap from Scotland and when she got back and gave it to me, she said that this Harris tweed can only be made in Scotland and it came with the trademark. So I got a Harris tweed cap from village hat shop in San Diego and it has all the tags but the one tag says made in China. Is it a fake?
Nothing like finding the Harris Tweed Orb on a garment in the thrift store. Play it cool until you've paid and walked out the door, then laugh maniacally and run for the car.
Found one for 20 bucks, I was too small though
Hahaha, so true!
Found a beautiful coat, it was a 38 and I'm a 42. I'll just keep looking.
Got an excellent grey Harris Tweed Jacket in a charity store in Dalry, Scotland for £5.50 perfect fit. As we say in Scotland "Ya Dancer"
Your dog will thank you for finding the perfect lining for his basket...

Great find! They don’t seem to age at all, and if you can find your size snag it!
Appreciate you Carl! I just thrifted a piece of Harris Tweed by accident, and am starting to learn quite much about it thanks to you!
Best feeling

The period clothing that never goes out of style.
I visited the Harris Tweed Store in Tarbert on Wednesday this week. Such a magical place.

Thank you so much! I understand there is a whole segment of the industry which uses Harris Tweed in fine furnishings and upholstery as well.
Harris Tweed is the OG authentic real deal!!!

Had my dining room chairs covered in red black Harris tweed bought at the shop at the pier. Wonderful!
Forgot to say each chair has a Harris tweed label at the back.
Ironically I'm off to the tailor to pick up my Harris Tweed sport coat right now!
Awesome! I'd love to see it

@@CarlMurawski Great. Will look forward to it. Those colours look amazing!
Carl Murawski true true!
Hi from Wales. In the last year I have got two jackets and a waistcoat from thrift shops.😀👍
Found a sport coat at a resale shop last week, heading to the tailor next week to have it re lined and adjusted to fit 👍🏼

Love wool and Tweed in particular. Thanks for the history
i found two of these beautiful jackets in East London , South Africa in a second hand shop.
paid at current exchange rates, about 8 pounds for both

Such a great video! Thanks!
Old man fabric? You bet and it's still badass AF. Love my HT sportcoat with a turtleneck, flat cap and a pair of leather boots. Nothing better!
I have two Harris Tweed jackets, a newer one and an old herringbone. I'm wearing one ot them in my picture.

One is their tropical wool, and the other is flannel, but two of my AOS coats are Harris Tweed.
