    This was very helpful. I Am in the process of starting a fun basic channel for my young son and I. I've discovered that getting quality audio is MUCH more difficult to capture than quality video, yet just as important.

      Thanks for watching. Unfortunately, the audio configuration for my primary audio did not leverage a smartphone. It was a Tram TR50 plugged into a Zoom H5n digital recorder. What you are noticing is the difference between a recording solution that may cost $50 for a TRRS smartphone lav and one that costs $500 for a professional mic and recorder. Bummer for sure.

      Thank you for the feedback. The lens I used in this video is from a magnetic lens set distributed on the site PhotoJojo. For the past year I have been using Olloclip's iPhone lenses and I also really like the Schneider iPro Lens System. If I were to rate the quality of the lenses, I like the images shot with the iPro lenses best, followed closely by the Olloclip. I'm looking for an alternative adapter to the KV Connections Cable (One I can purchase on ebay), but I noticed that the majority of the adapters only support power-relient as opposed to self-powered microphones. What should I exactly be searching for?

    • @TheStoryGuide
      @TheStoryGuide  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      As I am sure you are discovering, there is a growing and confusing list of options for audio connection cables. Some will amplify your audio source while others merely re-patch the connections from a TRS connection on your mic to the TRRS needed by smartphones and tablets. For a cable like the KV connection conversion cable you can also look to Rode and Sescom. Sescom makes a version of the cable with microphone and headphone jacks. Hope this helps.

    I'm at a dead end with using an external mic and a smartphone.
    I've gone through three iRig mics over the years that always end up failing. I finally bought a Neewer 040 microphone with an Xlr to 3.5 cord. I also bought a UGREEN Y-Adapter to change the mic's TRS to a TRRS for the smartphone. (It's the second Y-adapter I tried.)
    It will record using the mic maybe once and then stop and not record audio at all. Maybe after reboots or unplugs and plugging in, it will work again, but rarely.
    I am using a Samsung Galaxy S6. I have tested the setup at the phone store on a S8 and S7. Also on a Huawei Mate 10. I have tested the microphone on my computer's mic input, it works.
    What can I do? I need to record audio via microphone for videos that I produce for work.
    I shot this with the last iRig I used to use. th-cam.com/video/0q-GX0qWCMI/w-d-xo.html
    Any help is appreciated.

      Hi Philippe, I have not tested it with the Note II. While I am unable to see in the device's specifications that it leverages the TRRS connection, all of the headphones that include a microphone and are designed for the device have that connection. Logic would say any of the mic and audio accessories that leverage a TRRS connector would work with the device. But I can not say definitively from first-hand experience it will work on a Note II.

      +Greg McIver Thanks for the heads up Greg. Over the years Avast occasionally flags the site. We check to see there is no virus or malware and we have yet to find a problem My hosting company then has to contact them to ask to remove the site from the list. We are good for a year or two and then we get another false-positive. It can be frustrating to chase when the information we get on the problem is essentially non-existent. Found guilty without a trial and little recourse for solving the perceived problem. That said, I still think services like Avast are really important. I just wish they would do a better job helping content providers understand when and why something gets flagged.

    • @DrewKellerStoryGuide
      @DrewKellerStoryGuide 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Yusef. My guess is the lavalier mic you are using does not have the proper connection for the phone to recognize the mic. While many mics have the 1/8" mini jack and plug into the device, the connections on the plug do not line up with the connections in the phone jack. Make certain you are using a mic with a TRRS connection or an appropriate adapter. You can get more information about your options on the StoryGuide website. Hi,
    I realize it's been a while since you posted this but I have a question. You state that this is to improve audio for video. Its this for iPhone only? I ask because I was reading that for most Smart phones (I have an S3) once you start to record video, even if you have an external mic attached either by the earphone/mic plug-in (as you show) or usb otg, it will switch back over to the internal mic.
    Also from what I understand, at least on the S3, that the preferred method is via usb otg. due to the audio suppressors for ambient noise ( or something along those lines) via the external mic jack.
    Are you familar with this? Have you tried your method as well as gear on the Samsung or other popular android mobile devices?
    I've also heard you can brick a phone using some cables due to the ground being switched. How can one be sure which cable will not brick your smart phone via usb otg connector or cable?
    tia

      Should work on 90% of Android phones. I regularly use a Galaxy S2, S3 S4, Mini, Ace and Xperia S using a 3.5mm microphone adapter. However, it doesn't work on my old Xperia X10i or my original Samsung Galaxy S due to having different pole positions.

    • @YknotLearnall
      @YknotLearnall 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stephen De Tomasi Read this:
      www.wildImountainechoes.com/equipment/audio-recording-with-a-smartphone/
      Not saying it won't "work", i'm sure it will record. But due to the audio suppressor inherant to at least the S3, i've read (via the above link) the preferred method is via usb for much better audio quality.

    • @StephenDeTomasi
      @StephenDeTomasi 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Link is bad.
      Either way I've got some great quality audio from my lav mic on my S3. It depends on what you want to do I guess.

    Hi. Thanks for these tips. Please, how and where can one get the "low cost lav. Mic?"

    • @DrewKellerStoryGuide
      @DrewKellerStoryGuide 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Giles, any online retailer like B&H will have low cost lavalier mics. In the neighborhood of $25. Remember that these microphones do not have the proper connection and will need an adapter (TRS to TRRS). When you combine the cost of the mic and the adapter you will probably discover it is cheaper to purchase a mic designed for mobile devices. Something like the Rode SmartLav.

      Thanks. Checked out your site and found a link to the lav mic designed for smartphones on Ebay. Ordered one for £20 including shipping cost.

    My question is...if you're in a radio studio, how do you get all of the station's on-air audio onto your smartphone either for regular video or for a Facebook live post?

    • @TheStoryGuide
      @TheStoryGuide  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It sounds like you are looking to run a line feed out of the board directly to your device. Since most mobile phones are expecting a mic level input, not a line level input, you will need to attenuate the signal so it does not sound over modulated. There are multiple options for you. For a direct input I would look at something like this KV Connection adapter: bit.ly/2uGUllT or the Headset Buddy: amzn.to/2wIOn5j For more control over the audio level I might consider an iRig Pro: bhpho.to/2fugKAL You may also find a solution like the Line 6 interface will solve your problem: bit.ly/2upA9FX As you can see, there are solutions out there that will best fit your needs. Best of luck and I hope this helps.

      Hi Johalizan, Which "this" are you talking about? Not exactly sure since I mentioned a few different solutions. You can find a list of mobile accessories on the StoryGuide.net website with information and links for these devices and more. Might be a good place to start. Let me know if I can help.

    Dear Mr. Drew, I'd kindly like to ask for your help. I have a Nokia Lumia 1020 and I've been trying to find a solution to attach an external microphpne. I already have a Lavalier by Audiotechnica, and I am desperate in fnding a way to use it for videos I wish to make. I am really lost. I am not a techie person, at all. Please, could you be so kind to help me? Here msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff634515.aspx it is said Windows Phones can work with Microphones connected through the headset jack, but what is the right connection cable? Please, could you help me? Thanks a lot, a lot indeed. Nicoletta

      Joshua Evander Hi Joshua. The audio that you hear when demonstrating each mic is from the actual microphone, recorded on the iPhone. For the primary audio you are hearing a Tram TR 50 lav mic plugged into a Zoom H4N digital audio recorder. The mic is concealed inside the shirt and the digital audio recorder is clipped on to the belt in the back. I am not a fan of wireless unless it is absolutely necessary. They have a tendency to fail at the least opportune times.

      Hello, how do you sync up, or have the audio from the Zoom H4N show up on your IPHONE Video?

    • @DrewKellerStoryGuide
      @DrewKellerStoryGuide 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +music Thanks for reaching out. Unfortunately, the audio is not synchronized in the phone. The video recorded with the phone is used as one of the sources when editing a video. I leverage a number different of strategies when synchronizing my audio and video. All of the strategies take place during editing.
      Most often I use the audio synchronization feature in Premiere Pro. For difficult files, or audio that was not recorded at an accurate speed I will leverage the Plural Eyes application. When neither of those approaches work, then I match the sound by hand, using the waveform graphs in the timeline for reference.
      The key to successful sync is recording reference audio with your video. If the video you capture in the field is silent then you are stuck making a best guess. While the sound quality on your camera is often poor, you will have a guide to ensure the high quality sound captured on your audio recorder is timed correctly and is playing at the proper speed. Once my files are timed correctly I either delete or mute the audio from the camera.
      Hope this helps.

    what mic was used to record this audio/video? Didn't see any lav or handheld mic here.

    • @TheStoryGuide
      @TheStoryGuide  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      David Malone We most often use a Tram TR 50 plugged into a Zoom H4N digital audio recorder. The mic is concealed inside the shirt collar and the digital audio recorder is clipped on to the belt in the back. The video is shot on a DSLR and the two files (audio recording and video) are synchronized in editing. You can accomplish something similar using two smartphones and a lav mike (like a Rode Smartlav). Plug the mic in one phone, put it in airplane mode to avoid interference, and use an audio recording application like Zoom's HandyRecorder to capture clean audio. Shoot your video with the other smart phone (or any camera, really) and you can sync them up in editing. It is a lot like having a wireless without all the potential radio interference.

      StoryGuide Hey this is really great, I am using windows phone to record video and will be using my android for audio.
      My question : Instead of Lav mike can I simply use the earphone/headphone that comes with the phone which is having mike. ?
      which editing software do you use for sync.?
      Thanks

    • @TheStoryGuide
      @TheStoryGuide  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Narendra Bisht You can use the earbuds/mic as your audio source, although the quality of the audio will suffer compared to the sound quality of a lavalier mic. Because it can look a little odd with your subject either wearing earbuds while on camera or having the headphone dangling from a pocket, you might consider buying a low cost pair of Galaxy headphones and removing the headphones, leaving only the mic. You can seen a demo of how to do it here in this tutorial: th-cam.com/video/ujk88v8iTMk/w-d-xo.htmlm45s Best of luck.

    can you use a bm-800

    • @TheStoryGuide
      @TheStoryGuide  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, but... The BM-800 is a condenser mic that will requires 48v phantom power. Options like the iRig Pre, Pro, or Duo, Apogee Duet or a preamp/mixer would be needed to use the mic in conjunction with a smartphone or tablet. A phone or video camera, using a connection like the TRRS, does not have the juice needed to run the mic.

    • @TheStoryGuide

      Federico Picone For this video I believe I was using my two Lumix GF6 bodies with Nikon lenses. I use Voigtlander adapters to fit my older style F lenses to the Micro Four Thirds mount. I wanted the cameras to match and I have two identical camera bodies for multi-camera situations like this. Hope this helps
