      sandfaydontplay if the shadow is on the wall, distance yourself from the wall. Keep moving away from it until the shadow is gone. OR get a work light or two and put them low behind you shooting up at the wall to get rid of the shadows. I’m a good 8 feet away from the wall you see behind me AND I have a light behind me lighting the wall up. What you have is fine, you just have to learn how to adjust them.

    Gotta say, it takes me forever to edit on my iphone using iMovie. When i split music and audio clips they jump all over the place and it is sucha pain to drag and drop them trying to get them where they need to be. I have to drag them with my finger over and over and often it takes many attempts to get a single clip in place.
    It’s so convenient shooting with your phone and all but Im leaning to getting a camera soon. I remember editing in the computer (which i did until my camera broke a couple years ago) being a bit faster than this.

    • @DeeNimmin
      @DeeNimmin  6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Mother Muse I still prefer editing video on my desktop, even if the footage is from my phone, for the exact reason you say. I have large fingers and it’s difficult to make the cuts and move things around on the phone editors. However, the more I do it the better I get. But I’m 100x faster on my desktop when it comes to actual video editing.

    • @MotherMuse
      @MotherMuse 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Dee Nimmin is it a stupid question to ask how you get the footage from your phone to computer? I am having difficulty with iIcloud for some reason?

    • @DeeNimmin
      @DeeNimmin  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      No such thing as a stupid question. I plug mine into the computer via USB and transfer the data. If you have an Apple computer you can use Air Drop. For me, I find the cable is the quickest and I bought an extra one that stays plugged in so I always have it there.

      i've had the same problem with audio when i'm editing where things will be off. i have even had this problem when not detaching the sound files. or when i decide to download it to my phone after i am happy, i have to go back and redo it because certain parts will be soundless. my friend has imovie on his computer and he can edit so much easier than i can on my iphone. but it is getting a little easier with each video.

    Dee, just watched your first three videos. Great stuff. This year I've decided to really make an effort with TH-cam, and you'll be one of the creators helping me along. I'm a full time Airstreamer (I live in an Airstream....aka trailer trash) so all of my TH-cam work is done with mobile tech. I can sit in the desert running on solar in my Airstream and share videos, or I can be hooked up in a park with full Wi-Fi. When I'm doing outdoor video I use a Lav mic with my iPhone, and I favor Voice Record Pro, so glad to know it's one of your recommended apps! Thanks for starting this channel and I'll look forward to getting some more mobile ideas from you!

    • @AZ-Drone
      @AZ-Drone 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dee, I'm up and running. My TH-cam Channel has been around for years but nothing was consistently posted. Over the years I collected random subscribers so I actually have over 1000 subscribers randomly. This year I decided to make a concerted effort on TH-cam. Covering full time living and working from an RV, running my business, travel, and mobile tech for RV'ers. Still need to zero in on my audience as the bulk of RVers are retirement age, but I'm interested in expanding on working from the road. I'm a "young" RV'er, and there are more and more mobile workers out there, so trying to cover topics for them. Still learning the ins and outs of TH-cam, and I follow along with Nick and TubeBuddy as well (found both last month). Thanks again for your new series, really good so far!

    I am enjoying this series. I only use my iPhone 8 to shoot and edit all my videos and I have almost 600 videos on my channel. I would like a tutorial on the settings for an external mic. I currently use Zoom iQ5 and windscreen. Do you know the Zoom mics? Is the Rode SmartLav mic better than the Zoom ones? Thanks 🙏🏻

    • @DeeNimmin
      @DeeNimmin  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lou Arnold - TH-camr Cristã Hi Lou, I have a Zoom H4 and H5 but I haven’t experimented with your mic yet.
      I wouldn’t say one is better than the other, the smart lav+ and zoom are just different and used in different situations.
      Are you happy with the sound it gives you? If not, what’s the problem you’re having?
      My Zoom external recorders are sensitive and pick up a lot of surrounding noise so I’m not sure I’d use them for my voice unless it was very close to my mouth and I could turn down the gain. You should also be able to adjust the width of the signal it picks up to 90 degrees instead of 120, which will pick up more surrounding noise.
      Zoom makes solid product, you might just have to play with it a bit more to make it work for you. If I see one here I’ll pick one up and do a video about it.

    • @canalcristaoprofetico
      @canalcristaoprofetico 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dee Nimmin Hi Dee, thanks so much for replying. Yes, I use 90 degrees and have my mic gain on 5. But I have the other switch set to ‘limit’ instead of ‘auto gain’. I can’t actually hear any difference between the two. Do you know what the difference is?
      When I edit, I turn the sound up on iMovie and LumaFusion.
      I don’t really have a problem with my zoom mic, I just want to get better quality sound on my vids and I’m prepared to spend money on it. I thought maybe the smartLav was an improvement as it’s newer than my old zoom! Thanks again

    I like Voice record pro also. My favorite budget mic is the MOVO VXR10 and the videomicro from Rode. A lavaliere mic is normally my last choice when I choose a microphone. If you are going to wear a ball cap one of the bast places to put the mic is under the brim of the hat near the end. That way you wont get the clothing noise or inconsistent sound when you turn your head.

    Great video :)
    I've spent tens of $thousnds on equipment for my channel, yet more and more I find I'm using my phone, a gimbal and a 'Lav. The only other thing I add is a Zoom H1 so that there is no cable going to the phone to get tangled up xox

    • @DeeNimmin
      @DeeNimmin  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cutting the Caboose Hey there :-) I kind of got hooked on the smart lav after testing them in this video. So much easier. And right on about the Zoom, those are fantastic. Any voice over is done to a Zoom h4 and it’s also used to accept the XLR from the shotgun mic then plug into the camera to pass the audio.

    Hey,Dee! I have a question to you.
    "In some Reveiw vedios we see
    that the person(channel owner) is not presenting the device/Gadget practically but he is reviewing with some exciting vedio clips from their(product) website.Isn't there a copyright strike issue there??Will you tell me how they do such vedio without copyright strike??"

    • @DeeNimmin
      @DeeNimmin  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a tricky one. Depending on how you use the content, you *might* be able to claim Fair Use on the content. However, there is always a risk. It comes down to one thing... if you don't have permission to use the content, either get permission or don't use it. It's not worth getting a strike. In regards to reviews, contact the company and ask them if it's OK for you to use content off of their site to promote their product. If they don't reply, don't use their content. If you're playing the long game, and you should be, it's better to not take the chance.

      I just read that over again and it sounds like a back handed compliment. I thought you were teaching editing on a phone - I have zero desire to do that - everything else about the Iphone and recording i am ready to learn. Specifically settings and what support gear. ALSO please point out when / if we're missing out on something because we don;t have a full camera. (that's going to help me decide when it's time to get serious about upgrading). Sorry for the back-handed compliment.

    • @DeeNimmin
      @DeeNimmin  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jeff Lotter, Esq. Things I would look into if you’re going to shoot a lot with your phone. 1) A solid tripod 2) Some sort of microphone 3) Filmic Pro app (or something that gives you full manual control).
      That said, what type of content are you shooting? That would help me suggest things you may need.

    Hey, thanks for the test. How do you see the difference between a mid-range smartphone (e.g. Oppo A91) and a simple field recorder (e.g. Tascam DR-05X) ? Would the sound quality with the smartphone+ external micro be sufficient for relatively high resolution /difficult sound material like rain sounds, wind, etc. which doesn't just sound like frying fat in a pan ;-) ?

    (Sigh) I forgot to hit the bell. I'm playing catch-up on your uploads. Back of the classroom for me.
    Anyway, another great one! I just sent a fellow creator an Audio Technica ATR3350 because he had massive audio reflection issues using his mobile device at a distance (and in a kitchen to boot. Holy reflective surfaces, Batman!)
    Can't stress enough that distance makes even a great mic sound worse.
    Proximity to vocal mic (unless you're recording ambient effects) is key.

    • @DeeNimmin
      @DeeNimmin  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Extreme Food Reviews You’re spot on. I’m having trouble with my shotgun in this space. Hard surfaces everywhere. It’s so bootleg of you saw behind the scenes. LOL

    • @ExtremeFoodReviews
      @ExtremeFoodReviews 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      We've had a similar problem being that we film across a table (distance + reflection) in an already reflective room. Our answer was to use a microphone isolation shield behind a Audio Technica, side-address AT2020 cardoid pattern mic just under camera view.
      At least the mic is now isolated so that it's only picking up what comes straight at it, not from behind or the sides.
      Plus, we get the added bonus of having our mic look like we've built a mini shrine to it (which is ironic because we do seem to worship at its altar, hoping for that sweet, smooth sonic clarity)

    I was hoping to see a 4th light pop up in the background, and each new video introduced a new light bulb to see if anyone notices :P
    I had a lot of problem with audio this past year during summer and spring. Birds tweeting through the day, and having to try and suffer through a hot day with turning fans and aircon off to record. Not fun :/
    Both those mics sounded pretty average in studio (are there any more expensive options that sound the same or similar to the recording microphone?) but they sound great for outdoors!

    • @DeeNimmin
      @DeeNimmin  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Beanie Draws Hey Beanie! Yea, I’m gonna keep sneaking them in.
      I agree with the mics, they shine outside where inside they are average. Where I’m recording in the room is a funky spot and not the best for sound, I’m struggling getting the audio together in that location.
      I feel ya with the noise outside. We have roosters and airplanes flying overhead. It’s frustrating at times.
