  • Lots of people have asked for a low-cost solution for recording two people in interview style videos. Here's one option using two RODE smartLav+ mics, an adapter, and your smartphone. The audio quality is decent, certainly better than your camera's mic and the total cost for the microphones and adapter is less than $200 USD.

    FINALLY. Somebody who knows how to talk audio, in a clear and easy way. I've been watching a dozen or more videos on hooking up a lav mic to an iPhone, and none of those videos from many channels really got into the crux of the matter. Curtis ! - so glad I found your channel ! In another video you have on-screen graphics show the difference between TS, TRS and TRRS. Thank goodness I found you. Phew ! I just purchased a package of 3 TRS mics off of Amazon, Neewer brand ( 3 for $10 ) I realized later that they will NOT work with the included adapter with my iPhone 7Plus. ( Apple ships this lightning to 3.5 adapter with all new phones that don't have an audio jack ) I did some searching, and you can use the lightning to audio adapter that came with it for a *microphone* ( I have not been able to confirm this theory though ) Here's my question - IF I have to the Apple adapter ( Lightning to audio ) and then another adapter that has a TRS to TRRS configuration - will I be only recording in MONO ? ..... Also, what are you suggestions ? These little el'cheapo mics arrived only yesterday, and I"m thinking they should be heading back to Amazon for a refund and I'll buy a TRRS mic ( it seems I didn't do enough research ) BTW - I do have a mint Zoom H2 - and originally bought these TRS cabled mics for that Zoom H2 ... thinking it would work. ( now I'm not so sure it will ) does the Zoom H2 require a TRRS cable end to plug into the Zoom ? ... if you tell me yes, then the mics must go back. Thanks for your time, I hope you find my question here, and hope you can spare me a few seconds ! - Mark over at the BakeLikeAPro recipe channel. Thank you Curtis !

      Hi Mark, the Apple lightning to 3.5mm adapter requires a TRRS connection to work. Phones, by design, only record mono into 3.5mm jacks. As for the Zoom H2, it requires TRS microphones so the Neewer mic should work with the H2. Best wishes!

    Helpful. Answered my question about recording on a single channel. I need to record each mic on a separate channel, left & right, each onto a separate track. The problem with a trrs is the mic is mono. For recording I'm using the N track 9 app on android. It allows recording left & right mic inputs on separate tracks. I'm gonna try an external usb sound card dongle plugged into the USB-c port and plug a left/right splitter into the mic input (Cuz none of these dongles have more than 1 mic input). One mic will plug into the left input & another into the right. This is the only way I can see to plug in 2 mics on separate channels & a set of earbuds for monitoring. What I want to do is sing & play guitar, recording voice in 1 mic & guitar in the other, and be free to move around with the guitar without being wired to equipment, audio interface, etc. A truly mobile multi track recording method. The Android phone & recording app have this ability but I Have yet to find a single device that allows to do this simply. I need an audio sound card/ interface dongle that plugs direct into the android phones USB- c port & which has a 1/4" input for guitar & 2 1/8" mic inputs for lavalier mics.

      @@curtisjudd Thanks for the tip. Thing is the IRig devices seem to be for Iphones, not Android. There's 2 inputs for xlr or 1/4", but no 1/8" inputs for lavalier mics, maybe you could use a 1/4 to 1/8 adapter.

      No, sorry, didn’t consider lavaliers, my oversight. The inputs supply way too much power for lavaliers and will likely damage them unless you use an adapter which also converts the voltage like a RODE VXLR+.

    Curtis I was at Sam Ash in NYC today and bought a Rode SC6 and a IRig Mic Lav. May have duplicated capability as the IRig has a similar adapter to add a second Mic. Will be testing. Big challenge is doing sit down interviews with a hand held and reaching over to get the Mic near the guest. Using a lapel Mic should be a big help. Making progress. Ken

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Chris, smartphones with 3.5mm inputs generally only support a single channel of audio as the jacks are designed for stereo headsets with a mono microphone.

    • @pcislocked
      @pcislocked 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope. The microphone channel in the TRRS connection is mono. You're better off using a cheap phone or an external recording when you need manual mixing controls.
      But, if you're using a recorder with TRS input, and if you can do some DIY, you can look up the pinouts and stuff use this to make your own stereo seperator(maybe there's already made adapters not sure) to use dual channel at TRS plug for what you've wished.

    Thanks for sharing! I already got the SmartLav+ (TTRS) with SC-3 because I almost always record into the cameras TRS input. Now I would like to buy a second Lavaliermic with a splitter for a interview setup. Would you recommend buying a second SmartLav+ and a SC6?
    Or rather a set of two equal TRS Lavaliers and (what kind of) splitter? Dankeschön for your advice!

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Carina, The SC6 could potentially work but seems like a lot of adapting and you cannot control the input level of the two microphones independently which becomes problematic when one of the two people has a louder voice than the other. You might consider looking at an audio adapter like one of these instead: th-cam.com/video/B_0od_f_QkQ/w-d-xo.html

    It is such a relief to watch your vids! Both because of the knowledge which is impressive and because it is just an ease to watch and listen! I have one question; is it at all possible to use two external mics with a iPhone 12 pro max and get two seperate tracks in post, so you can edit each audio alone? After watching your review of the Røde Videomic NTG, I would like a setup with that one and a wireless lav mic on Blink 500 Pro. As far as I know, Apple dont want you to use two seperate mics from third part?

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Sverre, It isn't possible directly into the iPhone, but if you use an audio interface which supports iOS, then you can attach two mics to that and pan one left and one right. It is a pretty cumbersome setup, however.

    Are you still a big fan of the Giant Squid mics for recorders such as the Zoom H1?
    And I am looking for a new recorder to run mics into...doesn't need to have built in mic...what would you suggest?

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jay, the Giant Squid is good for its price, but to be honest, I have better mics that I prefer to use for my corporate video work, and I actually prefer boom mics. My two main work horses are the RODE NTG-2 and as of a month or two ago, the Audio Technica AT4053b. If I have to use a lavalier, I'll usually use the Audio Technica AT899 or HMNSound MicroLav (which I haven't reviewed yet because they're still fine-tuning it). Both of these are XLR mics. Lavs are not my favorite but I review them because they do have their strong points (easier to use for one-person production crews) and our little community here asks about them frequently.
      As far as recorders, I really like the Tascam DR-60D. It is almost perfect. If it had better battery life, it would be amazing for its $200 price tag. But alas, that smallish price-tag comes with a few costs, the main one being rather mediocre battery life. Some complain about the electronic potentiometers (to control the input levels) but I don't find those to be an issue when recording dialogue because I don't usually ride them while recording. Of course I'd love to have a Sound Devices mixer/recorder but the $2000 beginning price tag is a little out of my part-time film-maker budget for now. My review of the DR-60D can be found here if you didn't already catch it: th-cam.com/video/C3jgu9IivZM/w-d-xo.html

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, that is always a risk. The way I manage that is leave some headroom by setting your gain or input level so that the regular peaks hit -12db or so. Then in editing, you'll need to normalize to make it loud enough. I'll have a new episode coming this week to show how to do that.
      I have used FilMic Pro. Pretty decent app.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Matt, I'll need to pull out my MacBook to confirm it works with that setup. Definitely works with iOS devices. The big downside either way is that both people are recorded to the same audio track which doesn't leave you with as much room to fix issues or sweeten the sound in post so I still usually bring along a proper audio recorder where I can record people on separate tracks. In summary: if you're working with a tight budget, go with the setup in the video and be ok with mediocre sound. If you have a little more, I'd go with a proper audio recorder.

    Why do you wear the lavalier mic upside down? I'm amazed that your voice is still clearly audible when using the mic upside down.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Maarten, 99.9% of lavalier microphones have a generally omni-directional pickup pattern (though it is not perfectly omni-directional). Placing it upside down can solve two potential problems: Plosives (where the letters P or B are spoken and overwhelm the microphone), and sibilance (it can reduce the harshness of sibilance in some cases. Sibilance is the harsh or distorted sound you sometimes hear when someone speaks the letter S or C).

    Hey Curtis, You just made my day! I struggled with figuring out the way how to record and monitor on a smartphone and this seems to be the least cumbersome combination of interfaces. Have you had a chance to try it out with the iPhone 7 or higher with the 3,5-inch jack to Lightning adapter? Is there a significant loss of quality due to the transition from analog to digital through that adapter or is it barely noticeable? Thank you!
    Pavol

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Pavol, the quality difference is very small. Phones are not the most amazing audio recorders for a variety of reasons, but this works decently. Regarding the headphone jack, there are two things to keep in mind as it is not a perfect solution: 1) The recording app must support duplex to playback the audio while recording. 2) Apps that do support this play back the audio with a significant delay that can be rather distracting while recording. It is a very affordable solution, but just wanted to make sure you understand the tradeoffs. Good luck!

    • @HSalamista
      @HSalamista 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Curtis, Thank you for a swift response, much appreciated! Hmm.., the thing with a delay in the duplex to playback is a nasty thing and will be a big tradeoff. I would wonder if a pair of Bluetooth headphones could cope with the "monitoring" task better. I will have to try it out for myself if I hear my voice, while I am recording on an iPhone. The thing is, I would like to create the most cost and device efficient video recording setup around an iPhone 8 Plus with 4K 60 fps and a great sounding audio being recorded directly with the video to spare me the additional task to merge the audio recording with the video recording in a software. I am new to this and the recording situation I am planning is a very static one in a controlled environment.
      There are for sure benefits to record onto a separate device like the Zoom H1, though I cannot estimate the additional time effort to combine it later on in a software.
      The output target is TH-cam. Would you rather recommend to go the extra mile and record the video and audio separately with a later merge in a software?
      Thank you,
      Pavol

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Pavol, the RODE SC6 is definitely the most cost and size efficient solution but of course has the monitoring and no mixing control downsides. You could potentially consider an interface like this which has better monitoring and allows you to control the input level of each microphone. The cost is a higher price and a bigger piece of gear: th-cam.com/video/zm6WCGIQ7ak/w-d-xo.html

    2 SmartLav+s > SC6 breakout box > TRRS-TRS adaptor > Zoom H4N.

      Hi Michelle, it would definitely work better if this were a mixer that allowed adjusting the input level of each mic separately. It is an option if your computer has a TRRS input. Usually it will be marked as a mic/headset input. Most computers in the last 2 years or so have this. You can test your computer by plugging in a set of earbuds with mic (if you have one for your smartphone, for example). If it works, then the smartLav+ should work.

      Hi Leo, you'll want the RDOE SC4 to adapt the VideoMic Pro to work with a phone. Just got the SC6 adapter and hooked two mics into it and it records great but the headphone jack does not seem to work at all. I thought the purpose of this was to be able to record with one or two mics while you can also listen live through the headphone to monitor the sound coming in as it records. Another person thought no the headphone jack was only to listen to playback after the recoding is done. I have also heard the headphone jack wont work while mics are in unless you buy some app that has a setting in it called "playthrough" you must click on. ***** you can use the smartLav+ with your Zoom H1 by using our SC3 adaptor which converts it to a TRS connection.
      Recording your VideoMic into the Zoom H1 will produce much better quality because of the better audio preamps as well as allowing you to place your mic off camera, closer to your sound source.

    Hi Curtis, I'm trying to find a solution to get better audio for Facebook Live having 2 Lav mics into my Samsung Android S7Edge phone. Do you think the Rode SmartLav+ will be a good choice?

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I like the smartLav+. I haven't specifically tested Facebook like on Android to confirm it will take audio from the mic input on the phone. I know that some Android apps don't recognize external mics. Perhaps somebody else here has tested that combination?

      I got the SmartLav+ for my Samsung S7 Edge and I plugged it in, and it seems to work fine. The cord is so short, I had to go back and order the extension. Thanks again for your wonderful channel!

      Hi Media Boost, it is the same except you use the 3.5mm to lightning adapter from Apple.

    Hi, I bought the SC6 but the mic was picking up from my iPhone's mic instead of the Smartlav+. I'm using iPhone 4s, any idea what's causing the problem?

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sounds like the phone isn't recognizing the SC6. If you have a protective case on the phone, try taking it off and make sure all the connections are fully inserted.

      Curtis Judd Yup, I did just that, and everything works fine now. Thanks for the tips.

    Curtis, I am trying to figure out how to improve the audio and video quality for Live Streaming on Facebook and Instagram - and I have not found much that will allow me to use both external video and audio inputs. I am curious if there is a way to take the output of a video switcher and sound board into the inputs of an iphone to enable easily setup Live broadcasts. Any help you can provide would be appreciated.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Rick, getting the audio from a mixer is definitely possible. I'm not as confident on how to get a video stream from a switcher to a mobile device. Let me give it some thought and get back with you...

    Hi was wondering during video recording or live. Do you actually get to hear yourself? I heard some people it does not.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct - it depends on the app, but most do NOT play the audio back to you while recording.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      And part of the reason for that is that there would be some delay/latency so it would be really distracting to hear yourself back a second later.

    Hi Curtis, great video. Could I use the SC6 to record the input from an ECM mic using the correct adapter cable? (This does work when connected directly to the iphones trrs multi jack) Many thanks and keep up the good work. Billy.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Billy, yes, it should work as long as the mic and adapter work directly to iPhone. Good luck!

      Curtis Judd Hello again Curtis, I just wanted to let you know that the RØDE SC6 works perfectly with the external ECM mic and I'm really happy with the quality of the audio upon playback.
      I have another question for you if you don't mind...
      I've recorded some line level audio on my iPhone using a stereo aux cable and RØDE SC4 (TRS-TRRS) adapter cable. The audio is clipping slightly so my question for you is;
      In your opinion would reducing the line in input volume with an in-line volume control attenuate the signal sufficiently to allow for a more acceptable quality recording or must I buy a suitably attenuated cable adapter?
      Thanks again,
      Billy.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Billy, ideally you'd want to use a proper attenuator cable, but if the in-line volume control does the job and you're happy with the results, that should save you some money. Good luck!

      +Alex Vancu (Fotografie de produs) With the RODERec app, if you turn on the Playthrough feature, yes, you will be able to monitor yourself while recording with the SC6, SC4, and RODE SVM and a TRS headset. It works in a pinch.

    Hi Curtis, excellent video. Thank you. I have a rode mic from the filmmaker kit that has a micron fit. Although it fits the sc3 (wont fit directly to H1) I am not getting a signal into the H1. I have tried Rode but they have no solution. Any ideas? I have confirmed the mic works with the filmmaker kit and the SC3 and H1 are working fine with other setups.
    This setup works with a non-rode mic that has a male end with 3 black rings (with the rode sc3 adapter). The filmmaker kit mic with micron has 2 black rings. I can only assume the micron fit is causing issues.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, the microphone which came with my RODELink kits also came with the TRS Micon connector and works fine into the H1 without any adapters. Is this what you're trying to do?

    • @crackintoastmedia
      @crackintoastmedia 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your quick reply Curtis, yes, but it does not fit. It will push all the way in but once released it springs back out. tried on 2 different H1's
