He gave the princess hope to find the truth of her mother’s actions. He gave the automaton the chance to find his true self, to gain a friend. He gave the knight the ability to see the world in its many shades of gray, rather than black and white. He gave the cook the adventure of a lifetime, and the experiences of seeing the world. He gave the lancer the reason to continue to live, and the pathway to saving her people and love. He gave the girl the hope for companionship, and the idea of family. He gave the mercenary a new point of view, one where friendship overcomes all obstacles. And now, they all come together to give the thief his identity, his purpose for living, and the will to move on and finish the fight before him. And they come together once more, in the face of death, for they all know on thing in their hearts: They are not alone.
Don't get me wrong, I adore FF9 and Zidane is far and away the best main character in the series... but I didn't think this scene was all that powerful, soundtrack aside. FF6 and 8 both had significantly more powerful scenes IMHO, and 10 had some slightly more impressive ones. Even 9 had much better scenes, at least to me. 6's opera house notwithstanding, 8 had a huge number of big scenes. Attempted assassinations, prison escapes, rescue ops, missile launches, dogfights between flying buildings, romantic scenes on ocean-spanning bridges and in outer space... that last one's a bit over the top, I guess.
Just imagine seein that on a remake with full voice and expression 😥 the level of feels this games had and have its over everything else I can come to think
Chivalry requires a knight to look after his comrade-in-arms. I will not abandon you! And I shall follow you to kingdom come if I must. You remember that!
I was actually going through a phase of depression and loniness when I played this the first time and this moment this song made me cry. I now look back at how far I've come and how life turned around, I am grateful for this game and the other final fantasy I have played
This might be my favorite moment and favorite song in ALL of Final Fantasy. Seriously. I know people call this the "emo Zidane" part, but that's what made it WORK. For the entire game leading up to it, Zidane was the standard good guy; always optimistic, where NOTHING could get him down or make him worry. So to see him battered and broken like this, snapping at Eiko and Vivi, calling them brats, it was HARSH. Like, majorly harsh. The contrast of seeing him needing everyone else to guide HIM for a change and remind him that HE gets to decide who he is... it was absolutely PERFECT. Seriously, this was no "Zidane is Cloud/Squall" moment. This was a genuine breakdown with real emotional weight to it. Definitely one of my all-time top RPG moments.
+Ryusuta its why i love 9 in general everyone in the story except for quina, and aramant (lets be honest they dont matter to the story but still cool characters) all others have an emotionally draining and world shattering event happen to them. zidane discovering who and more importantly WHAT he is. vivi finally finding people like him but they are soulless dolls and are simply killed and cast away like tools. dagger/garnet seeing the town of his uncle with people she cared for killed by the summons she use to hold but lost to her own weakness and naivety. eiko seeing her home destroyed again and losing part of her family. freya seeing her already almost eradictated race killed now full on genocided by odin(remember she doesnt realize the family in Cids town when watches the tree explode) and the only ones left to her current knowledge is her, a lover whom doesnt even remember her, and a child. steiner seeing that all of his loyalty and duty betrayed and destroyed by a queen who has lost her mind to the darkness that his kujas magic. the entire game is about crushing our heroes individually and taking what they have been searching for or held for granted, and stealing it away or twisting it with malevolance, hate and despair.
+Ryusuta I like seeing Quina look at the world with a childlike innocence. It's an interesting dynamic that we usually don't get to see in the worlds of final fantasy.
Garnet is so underrated. She's one of the few princesses in medias that actually reflects on her status, constantly questioning and challening herself. She doesn't change path, instead she chooses to be a queen with consciousness and faith in others.
Another example I love is Estelle from Tales of Vesperia. She starts off as a sheltered girl, very smart about history but very naive and gullible. But as the story goes on, she sees the world is not so kind and wholesome as she had believed, and she faulters on collapsing on her own beliefs. But when Yuri pushes her to be her own person and makes her make her own decisions. "What is it YOU want?" She finally decides to embrace her heritage and have the courage to face death if it meant to save the world. She doesn't become queen, but she uses her power and influence to make the world even just a little bit brighter.
Ashe was similarly a good princess character. I didn't find her personality super engaging, but I liked the exploration of the idea of whether to let power corrupt you or the desire for vengeance turn you into something hateful. And like Garnet, despite being very young she wasn't trying to escape her station and considered it a grave responsibility. Even after losing her husband and needing to face becoming a queen alone.
As many royals as there are in the cast of the various Final Fantasy games, it really is true that Garnet is one of the few where that's a central part of her character. Ashe is the only other I can think of with a similar character arc.
Yeah, it's really a bummer that she's not a stronger battle character in FF9. Eiko is better, because she has Holy, plus all the same healing spells as Garnett. Garnett's weapon should be a lot more powerful. Just based on the physics of her atlatl style weapon vs Eiko slapping people with a flute.
nebelmonster1983 there really isn't man, sometimes i wonder if its just because i was a kid back then and it reminds me of that, but after replaying it last year its still the same amazing game
javierprful I have played most of the games in the series including those the people consider as the best and for IX is the best game by far too. It is just too awesome.
When Garnet stepped in out of nowhere and cast curaga on Zidane while he was about to lose while this music was playing was one of the most moving moments in gaming. While FF7 needed a remake. FF9 deserves one. Everyone should experience this gem of a game.
I kinda disagree. From my point of view, the ff7 remake didnt make any justice to the great game that it is. I feel that ff9 is just the peak, and any remake would make it worst. I do think the makers of the ff saga should try to make new games and continue the story but turning back to the old style.
It was epic. Seeing that monster smash Zidane to 1 health point and force him to go *Trance,* Garnet coming along and healing him, Garnet herself going *Trance,* and finishing off said monster with Zidane's *Grand Lethal* towards the annual end of the track......definitely one of the greatest games I've ever played.
I'm completely happy with the already existing "remake" on steam. Higher resolution, better-quality models, PC-Access... And the best part: nothing else changed! ^^
A band of misfits band together to save a world that rejects them. This game was *THE* definition of humanity at its finest. That’s why even today it stands the test of time
+Greg Bourquin no way the characters in 10 were bland and forgettable the weapons didn't really matter more a type thing than anything else getting the ultimate weapons is a chore the whole sin concept was predictable and to top is all off the story was boring
+Greg Bourquin i will say that 10 is better than 13 but how could the ending make you tear up half way through the game tidus is told what will happen to him it was his own choice to vanish for the good of the world
If ever you needed a reminder that your true companions are always with you no matter what. When Zidane had an existential crisis, his friends never left him. They wanted to help him through thick and thin, they wanted to show that they cared about Zidane as much as he cared about them. So if you have a circle of friends and you're feeling lonely... Trust me, you're never alone.
I've never gotten that far in FF9, but it sounds scarily similar to the Rydia Ex Machina from FF4. Cecil and the crew getting slowly picked off by Golbez one by one, until Cecil is the only one left, paralyzed by Golbez's magic. Then, a random Remedy is thrown from nowhere, and the Mist Dragon you killed in the first 20 minutes of the game appears to dispose of Golbez's Dragon, and an adult green-haired waifu shows up to spare you from instant death.
I can see it before me. The characters bouncing up and down like old school cartoons. Thought i was screwed for sure but then Dagger and all my friends joins me one by one. Beautiful moment
+ChaosSorceror_Davidicus it's kind of a throw back to that scene actually imo. FFIX is like a pool of memories of great moments in Final Fantasy Series, that's wht make it a hardcore classic.
ChaosSorceror_Davidicus it is and it isn’t. The scenes are similar yeah because the idea with 9 was to create an homage to the entire series before moving into the ps2 era with FFX but this scene is more emotionally charged because your protagonist turned his back on the whole party which is a real 180 for Zidane’s character especially. Though Rydia’s return was amazing. When I saw her go overboard earlier I was devastated
This part made me so emotional. Zidane thinking he would be alone but no, everybody was by his side to help him. Also he went through some massive character development in disc 4. I love him omg and I love Nobuo Uematsu for being this flawless
this theme hits a little close to home to be painfully honest . i never had friends who cared about me all i did was isolate my self and stay in the shodows but it was when my dad died i found out i had friends
I’m not even joking when I said that I wasn’t feeling IX until this moment…. This is probably one of the best final fantasy scenes of all the franchise hands down
*"Chivalry requires a knight to look after his comrades-in-arms. I will not abandon you! And I shall follow you to kingdom come if I must. You remember that!"* This is one of my favourite lines in the entire game. In his lowest moment, who else but his biggest critic reminds Zidane that to freely help others but choose not to receive any in return is not strength -- it is pride. There is no greater showing of a person's character than to see them when the chips are down, only to be lifted by those around them, who say without words "You have always had our back, and now we have yours."
When I was 13, there was a girl in my class who had recently transferred from a different school. She was usually quiet and only spoke when other students and teachers talked to her. She made 2 friends in a class full of 24 kids. I was one of the two. She was nice to me and we liked talking about the same things. We started getting along easily and we gotten close, it reached to a point where we even invaded each other’s houses uninvited just because we were bored. Our moms knew how close we were so they usually didn’t mind the constant home invasions as long as homework was revised. and I could never count to you the number of times we ditched the nannies. We played a lot of video games, it was the first time I showed her my favorite, we used to play this game for hours and it ended up being one of her favorites as well. I even told her about the guy I was secretly dating at the time. he was a 9th grade student, we were 7th or 8th I believe. She was literally shocked when I told her who it was because it all added up to her when we used to hangout with him during breaks lol. We even agreed how his personality was just so similar to the game’s protagonist and how my relationship with him matched his and the princess’s relationship. It’s one of the reasons why I still have this huge crush on the protagonist. I love this game to bits and it sometimes reminds me of my memories with her. Her favorite character was a certain one in the game that she used to constantly tell me how she just related to him so much. And how much she adored him as a character. I adored him too, he’s basically the most popular in the game. But I didn’t understand how his story was told. I was only 13 at the time. and I didn’t quite fully grasped the idea of anything, let alone the story of this game. One day, when we finished school. Her driver was supposed to pick us up but he was late, she suggested we walk home because her house was close. I kept telling her I didn’t want to and I wanted one of the drivers to come and take us. Either mine or hers. She kept convincing me but I was hesitant. I agreed later on because I didn’t want her to think too much or ask. Before we crossed the street, my body started to tremble, I was shaking, my body began to sweat and I was very scared. She looked very concerned, she held me by the shoulders and saw how I was just shaking so much. I even nearly I cried. It was as if I felt so cold. I had an irrational fear of crossing streets. I don’t know why but it used to terrify me. She paused a little, calmly looked left and right, held my hand very strongly and firmly, took all the books from me that I was carrying so she could carry them herself, and walked slowly alongside me. There were a few cars anyway but my fear didn’t stop me from moving as my legs gradually went faster as we continued crossing, all she did was do the same thing and follow my pace. Crossing that street was one of the days I could never forget when I was with her. I made a friend for life, I was happy I had someone who would understand me as much as I understood them. In a duration of 7 to 8 months, I started to see her less and less frequently. She was absent a lot of the time. I didn’t quite understand what exactly was going on, she didn’t answer my calls, her mom would just say she was busy with family every time I called, this applied to every other friend she had. One weekend, my mom woke me up and told me to go with her for a visit, the electronic doors had opened, we walked to the elevator, she pressed the 3rd floor button, and we waited until we reached the floor. When the doors opened, I saw her mother crying, the moment was followed by a big, coming hug from my own mother. As I went out of the elevator, I saw her brother, his eyes was pinkish due to constant tears, and he asked me to follow him. He took me to the room, and just I saw her there, laying in bed. Eyes closed, mouth blue and dry, I sat on the chair next to her bed. I paused for a little while I constantly looked at her. my bag was on my lap, I was holding on to it so strong, I was squeezing it very hard and I didn’t even realize it at the moment. I opened my mouth and said “Lara, wake up.” “Lara… wake up. Wake up, wake up.” I kept on saying it, I couldn’t stop myself. I continued “wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up!!!! Wake up!!!!” It was that moment I realized my hand was on her body, I had this desperate need to wake her up, I started crying, and crying and crying and her brother was just watching in tears. I was shouting. All of a sudden, I felt this embrace from behind me, it was my mother hugging me. It’s at that moment I weeped even harder. I knew I’m never gonna see her again, I knew my time with her will never relive its moments, but I knew that I will never forget her or forget this game, i realized her fixation with Vivi was due to her illness and it even made me cry more because I couldn’t figure it out myself until later. I knew why she loved that character so much and why she related to him. and I knew that our memories will always be part of the sky.
You just made a grown man cry. This entire game is my favorite piece of art, and through that you found a common nerve and struck it. This track is especially powerful to me too.
Thank you for sharing your story it was very moving. Vivi is probably the most advanced character that Final Fantasy produced in terms of maturity and relevance to the player. Facing your own mortality is not something that is easy to do and most of us don't think enough about it until it is far too late. I'm sorry your friend had to face down that giant at such a young age. In the end of the game we see a bunch of little Vivis and I've always liked to think about them as his echoing effect in the world after his death rather than literal clones or offspring of his. If remembering her makes you happy or a better person then she has an echo still in this world and you telling that story to me made me a little happy and a little sad. If you keep shouldering her memory and let it come out from time to time like this then one day when you die you can pass that on too. Stand tall!
Vivi, Zidane, Dagger and Steiner. The ones i used to complete FF9 the first time. Best and most awesome group of FF characters, both behavior and playstyle wise!
Yeah zidane is just all around useful, dagger has powerful summons as well as good healing spells, Steiner late game is a tank and can do a lot of damage, plus with vivi he has sword magic, which can do a lot of damage with spells like flare, and vivi is a powerhouse and can exploit most elemental weaknesses.
Vivi, Zidane, Dagger, and Steiner in no particular order are the four most important characters in the game. Even when I replayed the game this January on Steam, it still felt best to have these four characters together as much as possible. You chose very well for your first playthrough ^_^
I replace Dagger with Eiko after mid game though, better healing and support magic, and never spaced out along game events lol (silence Dagger is the worst)
The part in the game which this song starts to play gives me SHIVERS. Zidane ready to fall down in his own loneliness and nihilism - and his friends carrying him all the way. Blood froze, tears started to drop. Absolute respect.
When the guy who's usually the least of everyone's issues, never trying to be a hassle to everyone, always appearing to be the guy who always got it sorted out, as evident by his actions that helped get his friends back up to their feet, being their leader as a way. But when you see him closed off, depressed and his "optimistic and good guy personality" fades for the first time ever, and starts snapping at everyone, it hurts, really hurts to see someone like Zidane being like this. This is what makes this scene POWERFUL. From the guy who's always saving his friends to being the one in need and ends ups being entirely accepted by friends, which culminates into a beautiful and moving scene that is engraved in this franchise. The best example is this music piece; this piece doesn't sound that impressive on it's own, but that's the point; alone it doesn't impress much, but when it all comes together in the game, it becomes an all-time classic in the series. Befitting the main themes of IX and working so much in tandem. You are truly "not alone". IX is the best Final Fantasy, straight up. X is my favorite, VI is a masterpiece, but IX represents what makes this franchise so endearing and legendary.
For some reason, I always used them as the line up for the Final boss. I would like a remake that uses the switch in, while in battle like FFX. That was the best of that one.
"Chivalry requires a knight to look after his comrades-in-arms. I will not abandon you! And I shall follow you to kingdom come if I must. You remember that!" I'm not crying, you're crying
From the uptight knight who seems to dislike our favorite thief to one of the best of friends who would come to his defense in a heart beat. Truly a great man he is.
Just the symbolism of him suffering an existential crisis staggering along and rudely pushing away people trying to help him to go fight monsters by himself is what always made this song have a special place in my heart.
Throughout the entire game Zidane was a pillar of hope and support for his friends, telling them it's gonna be alright as long as they stay true to themselves and keep fighting for what's right. And at that moment, when he himself loses all hope and tells everyone they don't need a "bastard" like him, they come back for him and say "You NEVER gave up on us and we're NEVER going to give up on you lets do this TOGETHER!" True friendship is precious, one of many things I learned from FF9. :)
I think this is the moment I realized I had a new favorite game. While I'm glad I enjoyed Final Fantasy VII, the real present was being able to play Final Fantasy IX. What an absolutely astounding game.
Final Fantasy 9 was my first FF game I ever played. This was when I was 11. I'm 24 now and I personally feel like there is no other final fantasy game that comes close to the story, characters, and music of this game. FF 4,6, 8, 10, 12, Tactics (Zodiac Brave Story) and Dissidia are other favorites mine but 9 will forever be my top 1.
You should play FF7 to change your perspective in which is the best FF that comes close to story and characters. For me, in the same level with MGS saga, Final Fantasy VII is the best game ever.
I feel like everyone who played 7 first says this same thing about it, and the same with most any numbered FF, though 7's certainly the most popular to see it. I played 4(2 U.S.) first and I loved it like heck and still do, but 6 is actually my favorite, with 4, 5, 7 and 9 close behind. /shrug
Damn never got hit this hard with nostalgia... im fighting the tears back. FF9 was my complete childhood, the first mature RPG game ive ever played, before that it was just street fighter and mario. The feelings this game gave me, i will never feel again...
This has got to be one of my absolute favorite parts of any game, ever. The music, the story, the tragedy...Few parts of anything have made me feel so much raw emotion, and for that, FFIX is beyond perfect; it forever etched a new standard in perfection and rocked my world to its core, redefining everything I thought I knew about interactive storytelling. Thank you for making this.
Noke0 The last of us is the best story I played on my PS4 it was a shame i never played it on the PS3, But the story is so good for a modern game nowadays :D Such feels!! :D
DragnSly too bad square judged Hironobu Sakaguchi based on his GODDAMN MOVIE... Even though his game's story telling really is genius. Without him, FF series would be pretty much doomed... anything above X was shit covered in cool graphic presentation to reap profits. No soul were seen in the games themselves.
"Why you care about small things? World very simple place" "World only have two things: Things you can eat and thing you no can eat" HHAHAHAH Quina best character hands down, Am i right? xD
For some reason, I always seem to feel better after listening to this song. I remember this song playing when Zidane decided To go on his own, and kill everything in his way. He thought he was alone, but he wasn't. He has many friends that care for him, and will fight along his side. I still cry a little while listening to it. I listen to this when I feel alone, but this songs makes me feel like I'm Not Alone.
I'm 29 and still get the feels.... :( I just finished the game on Saturday 6/21/14 Last time I played FF9 I was 16 and along side smaller brothers. This time I was next to my kids (10 and 6). They watched me play the final battles. They will grow up knowing the best games of all time not some flappy bird trash....
I don't know... But you know what surprised him even more? The father smiled, after beating up his son! Can you believe that? He just gave his son a beating. But this is what the man thought when he saw his father smile. "This is my home. This is the place I call home." The man is still looking for his birthplace. But he already has a home. Maybe... it's the same for Vivi. He's looking for a place to call home.
This is my most favorite scene in all the series, Zidane, cheery, hopefully, and always wanting to help people and not have a reason for it, When Vivi was feeling down he was always there to cheer him up, Garnet, he always gave her hope, He even went back on his own to save Amarant, and in this moment of despair, It was so unlike Zidane and you never imagine Zindane like this. In the end I learnt that no matter how depressed you are, friends will always be there and you will never be alone.
The only really true friends i ever had growing up were characters in video games, they inspired me, made me feel good about myself n encourage me n gave me hope!
@@freedomfuryfighter7607 i was and thought the same until i finally met someone... love of my life we are over a year now and moving in together :). game are great and all but go outside my dude
I just finished FFIX the other day, I never got into them back when I was a kid but recently decided to see. Anyways in all my 21 whole years I have never had a video game ever be this amazing. The story, characters, and music are just unrivaled to anything I have played. If you haven't played this then go do it now!
@@poggamus4330 nah man, I'd rather have the original song in ff14. They did use some original sounded songs. Like dancing mad phase 1 through 3, decisive battle (ff6) for ultros and typhon, battle on the big bridge (ff5) with Gilgamesh and Enkidu... I'm sure theres more, but if they can keep this song sounding like this then I'd be happy
given FF14 is an MMO with a long patch cycle, dont be shocked if we hear this at some point down the line.... mainly in the Alliance Raids, that IS about the history of the twelve after all.
I'm so glad i had the chance to play this wonderful game and hear this amazing music again after so many years... This brings me back to my childhood time when i was playing it because of the lack of friends...
That moment when Zidane had a mental breakdown after found out that he was an Angel of Death, created for Gaia destruction, and then his friends came to his aid, supporting him. "You've protected us. But you still don't understand that we looked out for you, too! We watched your back while you watched ours. We believed in you the same way you believed in us! Just like you protected us...We want to protect you." - Garnet to Zidane. "Chivalry requires a knight to look after his comrades-in-arms. I will not abandon you! And I shall follow you to kingdom come if I must. You remember that!" - Steiner to Zidane
I just played this exact area last night.. while playing I just imagined Zidane with a broken leg multiple wounds around his chest and bleeding in the mouth. But still fighting on with a unbreakable spirit, and not giving up! God, this song just empowers you!
The reason this game was such a masterpiece was because of all the sheer emotional power it exuded in its entirety. Not just through its story narrative, but the music too. Especially the music. FF9 will be forever known as the first video game I ever played that legitimately had me sympathizing with fictional characters on a TV screen. They certainly don't make 'em like this anymore...
The chose of the picture for this song couldn't have been better! So awesome, I love this scene till today and it's mastermind perfection storytelling in terms of the scene itself and the choice of name for this very track. The track captures the Desperation Zidane is in, as well as the Bravery to fight on all alone so he won't put his friends in danger any longer, believing they'd hate him for what he actually is. But as well it reflects the determination of his friends, STILL standing by his side, not blinking an eye or considering a second thought to stay at his side or not, telling him: "Friend, you're NOT alone"
Honestly it's kind of amazing that one of the best musical composers of the last 60 years just so happened to find their start in the world of video games, but it's true.
This song is what got me into video game music. In a play-by-post RP our DM would post the link whenever she described the results of some feat we did as a party and I found it so beautiful that I played the game just to hear its origin. Even now, after getting the FF7 remake for Christmas years ago… Final Fantasy IX is the only game in the franchise I’ve completed. All because of this song.
What really amazes me in this section is how much Steiner changed. Think about it! He HATED Zidane. Almost killed him a couple times. And then there he is.. Fighting for Zidane's life, calling him his comrade in arms. There's a lot more that's incredible about this scene, but I feel like the change in our knightly friend is unnoticed.
I enjoy this part of the game most honestly, it shows how the bonds of all the characters have grown to this point. Steiner standing along side Quina is a great example, everyone see's him/her as a burden yet they still stand together in the face of overwhelming odds. Steiner I think developed the most as a character in the whole game besides Garnet, going from a stick in the mud to someone willing to die for his allies and charge in without a single doubt they will have his back even though he didn't trust any of the others in the beginning.
If I could meet oddballs like the FFIX crew that are so close they die for each other while sharing tender moments and laughs I'd do so in a heartbeat. I wish people like the FFIX crew were real to go on adventures with. This is the perfect theme song of loyalty in arms and deep love and friendship.
You know, I just realized something about this picture shown here. Each of the characters from Final Fantasy 9 shown in it correspond to the original first four classes in the first Final Fantasy: Steiner - Warrior/Knight, Zidane - Thief, Garnet/Dagger - White Mage, Vivi - Black Mage Nice looping back easter egg reference from the 9th Final Fantasy to the 1st.
So upset that many JRPGS have lost sight of what truly made these games great, that is the element of adventuring into a fantasy world and meeting and gathering such a rich diverse cast of characters of all races and cultures. I miss this aspect so much and I just hate how every new game these days have to have all of your cast completly known or part of a party that starts at the very begining of the game. I realize the reason probably for this is because its a pitch to market and promote a game with the main cast of party members already known and present but its just sad square enix will never return to the glory days of when discovering the unknown, held so much mystery and suprises, even for the main characters joining your party.
@@tomgu2285 Oh for heaven sakes, I didn't mean race of color. I meant races of various different cultures and customs or maybe even religion. Since the very concept of rpgs originated with Dungeons and dragons, the idea of diversity has always existed in the dna of rpgs and in the old days, it was interesting because you went on an adventure and discovered new places, new countries and characters of various different racial habitats but these were all different walks of people, monsters, figures you had to discover on your own which added a great element of mystery to rpg games. Now a days though Core AAA developers feel compelled as a marketing tool, to just advertise or promote the main roster of the game right from the start, that is why alot of newer high budget rpg games have you start out with you already knowning most your entire party. Where as more independent developed companies take the old design approach. Though you do still have stuff in the wild like big franchises, Dragon quest and Tales of which like to keep things more conventional with the times and I love that fact very much.
Ese momento en que sientes que estás solo , que tus problemas no le importan a nadie más... y tus verdaderos amigos te demuestran lo equivocado que estas. Ese sentimiento sin nombre es esta canción
Love this piece... I for one really miss speech bubbles in games. I know times move on and maybe I'm just being nostalgic, but sometimes voice acting can take away from the experience. Anyway, I'm just getting old. 'In my day...'
I came here after checking some list of the best FF compositions on GameFAQs. After browsing through all the usual suspects I came across this one, one I didn't remember right away. Soon it was all there, the scene, the music, the characters. I've become very jaded and tired of Final Fantasy in recent years. Square Enix has done an incredibly efficient job tarnishing the brand, but sometimes listening to pieces like this reminds me why I used to love the series so much.
I still love FF. Why? because I haven't forced myself through anything past XII. I've been a gamer a long time, I have a good eye for spotting trash. I watched 2 hours of FF13 and nope'd the fuck out of there. All subsequent ones in my observations were also lacking. There are ways to tell. (Linear levels, extremely poor quality writing, battle system simplified, character menu simplified etc).
john smith yeh i was always wondering why ppl talk so badly about xiii, then i watched"all summoning" vid on youtube and... well alexander turning int big wall was somewhat ok ( tought his desing from older games is way better), Odin turning into horse was meh... but when i saw shiva turning into motorbike... That was far too much for me...
I played this game and completed it for the first time last Summer, absolutely awesome, amazing game. I will be going back again this Summer and playing it again :) This part of the game is incredibly powerful.
Believe it or not.. FF9 will be the second FF game that I've beaten.. I beat 10 which was AWESOME!!! But sadly, my PS2 refuses to read Disk 4 for FF9 :(
I've looked at emulators to play it, but they cost SO much, I don't even want to download one either just because so many of them are full of viruses and malware :( But its okay, I got it to play disk 4 last week by shouting vulgar words at it, seems to be working pretty well :D
This game is just incredible. Iv replayed it probably about 20 times and it just never gets old. I would love to see a remake but it seems to always get missed out :( same with ff8
I remember the first time playing this game I was out of items and Zidane was up against this monster that kept sending him to low health. I was sure I was about to get a game over and then Dagger comes out of no where and saves him. I started to tear up after that.
I don't even know if you're going yo read this, but I have the same tought Cosmo canyon music and this track mean a lot. And well , the crisis core ending ... Man the feels
The occasional awesome game comes out every now and then, but you're absolutely right. This kind of game sticks with you forever. Never get tired of this soundtrack and I never will!
Currently replaying Final Fantasy 9 on the Switch and when this part came up it hit hard because I was able to relate to Zidane because I lived happy and freely with some depression. I started working hard and helping others but in the end I found out what I was being created into... An enemy to everyone around me. But aside from that this game and Final Fantasy 7 are my all time favorites.
My sister and I are in the process of completing this game (again) and we just finished Terra a few hours ago. This scene is my favorite in the entire FF series. The powerful music complimented a defining moment for Zidane. This moment is second to none.
That moment when you knew that you fight alone but at the last moment your friends showed. Quina, Vivi, Dagger, Eiko, Amaranth, Steiner, Freya... Thank you for everything. 2020 never forget! Let them tears flow.
The coolest thing about this video is that it was uploaded on my birthday. This part of the game was such an important part of me and my time with the FF series. It was my 1st FF game that got me into the series and is the reason I am who I am today. I love this game and I hope that if square enix makes a remake, they do it with care for the original story and gameplay. It would be soul crushing to see this game get the live action treatment that FF7R got because without the atb battle system, this game would not be the same.
this song is perfect! super emotional too, I can actually feel the despair that Zidane feels. The way he pushes everyone aside and just doesnt wanna hurt anyone. The entire game Zidane is there for everyone He puts his own problems 2nd to others. His friends showing up to su[pport him...and When Steiner appears (the guy who HATED him..) and says what he does..tears man, straight tears. great tune!
I agree with you, the perfection of the track , the scene , the whole cast in there, the lines written for everyone , just a pinnacle of crazyness that only this game can afford to have. So much emotional moments, so much philosophy and deep toughts about life and reality. Pure magic dood.
If you ever want a more tragic story that makes your heart pitter patter. And your eyes start to fall to tears. Get ff9.......its the best game with a great story.
And they come together once more, in the face of death, for they all know on thing in their hearts:
They are not alone.
Virtue-You don’t need a reason to help someone.
Who are automaton and mercenary?
The Automaton is Vivi and Amerant is the mercenary
This was beautify written. Forever my favorite Final Fantasy character.
One of the strongest moments in the entire Final Fantasy franchise.
Absolutely have to agree there! THE strongest in my opinion.
Strong for the story, but this masterpiece of soundtrack helps a lot!
I agree! That moment was really exciting!
I love you for this comment
The moment Steiner fully accept Zidane as his friend and comrade I almost cried
Just imagine seein that on a remake with full voice and expression 😥 the level of feels this games had and have its over everything else I can come to think
Chivalry requires a knight to look after his comrade-in-arms. I will not abandon you!
And I shall follow you to kingdom come if I must. You remember that!
Steiner is my fav character in the game. That moment just made him even more of a chad for me. I named him Chadelbert Steiner on my second run
@@Walamonga1313 I teared up when Steiner leaves Garnet to Zidane in disc 2, a very powerful moment of his character development.
They came a long way
You can't fully appreciate this track without reaching THAT moment in FFIX.
love the mbv pfp my man
Love the pfp
indeed
I was actually going through a phase of depression and loniness when I played this the first time and this moment this song made me cry. I now look back at how far I've come and how life turned around, I am grateful for this game and the other final fantasy I have played
Proud of you for how far you have come, you are not alone
I feel exactly the same. More power to you !
Thanks guys means alot ♥️ final fantasy can reach to anyone I can whole heartly agree to that
I understand you perfectly
Truth proof that video games can save lives.
You don't need a reason to help someone.
+Fullmetal Jedi Virtue summed up in one sentence.
...But I won't say no to a few Gil.
Blessed my dearly beloved likewise
I mean if they’re a douchebag ima need a good reason.
And if you’re a lawyer you might also need one.
"Zaubers? You think you know zaubers? Heh, I'll show you zaubers"
+piscespeter3 you are totally wrong...Quina's the best :P
Brian James S/he's certainly a more interesting blue mage than Strago.
+Ryusuta I like seeing Quina look at the world with a childlike innocence. It's an interesting dynamic that we usually don't get to see in the worlds of final fantasy.
+Ryusuta i hope they would like to make ff9 movie :D
Garnet is so underrated. She's one of the few princesses in medias that actually reflects on her status, constantly questioning and challening herself. She doesn't change path, instead she chooses to be a queen with consciousness and faith in others.
Not to mention overcoming severe devastation, depression, and death throughout her journey.
I'm playing this game for the 1st time. I just ended this part. This game, this ost, the characters...this game is FUCKING PERFECT.
royox im playing it also, best game ever by far...
javierprful enjoy it, really man, enjoy it. There is no game like this out there
nebelmonster1983 there really isn't man, sometimes i wonder if its just because i was a kid back then and it reminds me of that, but after replaying it last year its still the same amazing game
royox Hrm... I wanted to beat VIII first, but I might just go and play IX first... I got it anyway *shrug*
javierprful I have played most of the games in the series including those the people consider as the best and for IX is the best game by far too.
Nah, FF6 is the one that actually deserves a remake, and I'm a huge FF9 fan.
@@luispalacios8423 OK Hear me out...
We All Get Remakes? IV VI And IX
it's a true:
You don't need a reason for help people... FFIX taught me a philosophy of life with this phrase.
WONDERFUL
+Purplepuppet Pretty beatiful quote.
A band of misfits band together to save a world that rejects them. This game was *THE* definition of humanity at its finest. That’s why even today it stands the test of time
Can we have a moment of silence for the old style FF's.
I think I'll play this as tribute instead.
+ShamanNoodles I hear ya friend 9 was the last true final fantasy
+Greg Bourquin no way the characters in 10 were bland and forgettable the weapons didn't really matter more a type thing than anything else getting the ultimate weapons is a chore the whole sin concept was predictable and to top is all off the story was boring
finalfantasylord1 i dont know lol but 10s ending still makes me tear up to this day when i see it. 10 was def better than 13.
+Greg Bourquin i will say that 10 is better than 13 but how could the ending make you tear up half way through the game tidus is told what will happen to him it was his own choice to vanish for the good of the world
"Is this how you wanna solve the problem?" God I love Garnet and her maturity.
+mrguy22494
+Daniel Edwardson No sweat.
mrguy22494 thanks I've been feeling alone lately
Holy crap...Totally the exact emotions this part of the game brings out. Music included.
my friends ...my friends are my power!!!!!
Zidane suddenly with 1 hp.....*Random Curaga cast on Zidane*.... Dagger appears in the battle and joins Zidane
One of my favorite moments in the game. 12yo me was like "No! No! Shit no!" then clutch curaga to save the day!
+ChaosSorceror_Davidicus
it's kind of a throw back to that scene actually imo.
I love how it started from just one instrument to a whole band
The instrument represents his friends
I played this games when I was 12, now I'm 26 but still those characters smiling and jumping in my heart
Has it been 14 years already? Man I feel old.
Okanu MMXI I only beat it last year and now I want to get it out and play it again.
I was 15 when I started playing FF9 on the Vita and started with FF7 on my PSP I'm 16 now
i am 23 now and damm i feel old lmaoo! good memory's of this amazing game. sadly i cant say that for the latest final fantasy game.
1216Rockman
I am glad I see a youngster playing Final Fantasy and in this time it is a rare sight to see a youngster playing old games, well done!!!!
this theme hits a little close to home to be painfully honest . i never had friends who cared about me all i did was isolate my self and stay in the shodows but it was when my dad died i found out i had friends
You're not alone!
XD
Rawr XD...Don B a succr u emo. ull alwayz have midget wizard man :)
You remember that!"*
This is one of my favourite lines in the entire game.
Steiner: I still haven't decided if you're the man for the Princess, mind you!
Aww, steiner... Nice try, man!
it still gets me every time tho :)
And in the end, Steiner realizes Zidane IS definitely the man for Garnet. I love it!
@@dddd-hz5xf ikr? 😄
I knew why she loved that character so much and why she related to him. and I knew that our memories will always be part of the sky.
wow that was touching.... im so sorry
What was wrong with her?
You just made a grown man cry.
This entire game is my favorite piece of art, and through that you found a common nerve and struck it. This track is especially powerful to me too.
@@longebane not important. OP if you see this I'm sorry for your loss. She's always with you.
The original team and classic final fantasy line up. Cool huh?
I always picked that team too. Fitting as well since they started the game and it’s only right that they finish the game.
Definitely, FF9 is the best game ever!. I cried like a little girl, i love it!
It is Sakaguchi's, Uematsu's and my favorite FF game for a reason❤
My GOD that artwork made me feel emotions I haven't felt for many years... need to replay this masterpiece!
For some reason, I always used them as the line up for the Final boss. I would like a remake that uses the switch in, while in battle like FFX. That was the best of that one.
Most underrated Final Fantasy ever...
overrated*
giorgioskb Well he didn't explain why it was underrated, its rated enough.
+Darch Gaming Hell yeah
+Darch Gaming
Hell no.
This game isn't underrated. Majority of the fan base has this game in their top 5 or so.
It's actually the highest rated FF on metacritic xD
"Chivalry requires a knight to look after his comrades-in-arms. I will not abandon you!
And I shall follow you to kingdom come if I must. You remember that!"
I'm not crying, you're crying
I didn’t cry at all though, I was like...
“Good man Steiner, good man...”
From the uptight knight who seems to dislike our favorite thief to one of the best of friends who would come to his defense in a heart beat. Truly a great man he is.
@@articusramos808 Steiner earned the position as best character. Glad he got Beatrix in the end and I hope they lived happily. He deserves no less.
Easily one of the hypest moments in the game. I adore this song
I played FF7, its good but to me its doesn't come close to what 9 delivered
Crow Bone Different opinions and I respect that! Cheers!
/shrug
TheAziMax I agree i like FF7 it'd very creative
This made me cry so hard. If only I had friends like Zidane
Have hope! You will find them true friends someday, if you keep searching for them!
Hey friend
I’ll pass lol
stay strong!
Damn never got hit this hard with nostalgia... im fighting the tears back. FF9 was my complete childhood, the first mature RPG game ive ever played, before that it was just street fighter and mario. The feelings this game gave me, i will never feel again...
me too the beat of the best even the music bring me tears
I still have this game, still play it....and still beat it
Agree brother, this shit changed my life.
Agreed, right up there with FFVI and a few particular scenes. Still have not seen anything top Mother 3 or The last of us.
FFVI certainly told its story beautifully.
Final Fantasy VI, VII, and IX are some of the best stories I've ever experienced in any media, ever.
World very simple place"
"World only have two things: Things you can eat and thing you no can eat"
HHAHAHAH Quina best character hands down, Am i right? xD
There's only 3 types of people in this world. People who can count and people who can't count.
I love Quina's folk wisdom xD
For some reason, I always seem to feel better after listening to this song. I remember this song playing when Zidane decided To go on his own, and kill everything in his way. He thought he was alone, but he wasn't. He has many friends that care for him, and will fight along his side. I still cry a little while listening to it. I listen to this when I feel alone, but this songs makes me feel like I'm Not Alone.
Even tho I have not played Final Fantasy 9.. I always loved the music. such beauty within the song
Dragum Kirisute you should play it! it has such a beautiful story
Bubblezishere I might after i play through FF7
Dragum Kirisute oh I finished that game too
Bubblezishere :3
I'm 29 and still get the feels.... :(
I just finished the game on Saturday 6/21/14
Last time I played FF9 I was 16 and along side smaller brothers. This time I was next to my kids (10 and 6). They watched me play the final battles. They will grow up knowing the best games of all time not some flappy bird trash....
i really hope these games do not become lost in time
Jenny bean Hats off ☆
4 years have passed so fast, now you are 33 do you still get the feel?
You got kids when you were 19? wear a condom mate.
kvj1989 Kids being more joy than you think.
The giddy feeling you get when you remember how epic this scene in the game was.
AHHHHH
I don't know... But you know what surprised him even more? The father smiled, after beating up his son! Can you believe that? He just gave his son a beating. But this is what the man thought when he saw his father smile. "This is my home. This is the place I call home." The man is still looking for his birthplace. But he already has a home. Maybe... it's the same for Vivi. He's looking for a place to call home.
+Mako Materia .....Did your really remember that whole paragraph from the game?

This is my most favorite scene in all the series, Zidane, cheery, hopefully, and always wanting to help people and not have a reason for it, When Vivi was feeling down he was always there to cheer him up, Garnet, he always gave her hope, He even went back on his own to save Amarant, and in this moment of despair, It was so unlike Zidane and you never imagine Zindane like this. In the end I learnt that no matter how depressed you are, friends will always be there and you will never be alone.
I only recently played this for the first time and it's one of my favorite games ever! Fantastic soundtrack, story and characters. Masterpiece
My favorite final fantasy. my favorite game...
Mayks Spark YEE :^)
Mayks Spark The best one by far!!
+Mayks Spark closely followed by ff10 for me

I was thinking the art is brilliant, who did that and have they done more ff?
The only really true friends i ever had growing up were characters in video games, they inspired me, made me feel good about myself n encourage me n gave me hope!
Have the take the Dragoon's helm off sometime :)

I just finished FFIX the other day, I never got into them back when I was a kid but recently decided to see. Anyways in all my 21 whole years I have never had a video game ever be this amazing. The story, characters, and music are just unrivaled to anything I have played. If you haven't played this then go do it now!
listening to this while playing at the Zidane scene is really sad cause it reminds me i never ever had friends like that
Endwalker quest with this name is an excellent reference to this song, what a moment
I WISH THEY REMIXED THIS SONG IN. GUESS NO TIME.
Steiners line always gets me teary :)
@@dddd-hz5xf Same, considering how Steiner was in the beginning of the game till here
Oh Steiner, ya big softy.
They both got me in the feels...
Let's not forget Quina's heartwarming line "you teach me many things, more important than tasty munchies"
One of my favorite moments in video game history came from this part with this inspiring music.
it was a legendary bc they told us she and all in this fantasy all fantastic
Umatsu is a genius. There's no other way to say it.
Hell fucking yeah he is
I will fight ANYONE who disagrees XD
Honestly it's kind of amazing that one of the best musical composers of the last 60 years just so happened to find their start in the world of video games, but it's true.
The moment in the game when the Battle Theme decided to sit down and not interrupt this masterpiece.
underrated comment
Easily one of the best sound tracks in final fantasy history such strong emotions running through this its stunning
Most memorable part of the game
I remember I cried when this music played
+Ravy Aaron Kamba Those who don't cry are weak. It's a psychological fact. Look it up.

Greatest moment I’ve ever experienced in this franchise. TO ALL THOSE SUFFERING, KEEP TRYING, YOU’RE NOT ALONE!
The fact that remake is coming, Im so happy. This series was such a great ride!
@Napoléon Bonaparte He kinda did. Did you actually PLAY FF9?
@@Daybreak81523 It was all so suddenly xD, this part of the game I just cried 20minutes straight, that was so deep
@@StrokesKT same here
@Napoléon Bonaparte you clearly didnt played the game
I can't believe I forgot about this soundtrack for years... It's beautiful
No doubt this FF is my all time favorite and the soundtrack continues to blow me away! No other RPG compares to the nostalgic love I have for FF9
"You're Not Alone" and "The Price of Freedom" (from FF7: Crisis Core) are the two soundtracks in the series that hit me emotionally the most
I love every FF, but FFIX will always be my favourite. Such beautiful compositions by Nobuo Uematsu
This song. This moment. This Story. Top notch and by far the best out of them all.
You know, I just realized something about this picture shown here.
Each of the characters from Final Fantasy 9 shown in it correspond to the original first four classes in the first Final Fantasy:
Steiner - Warrior/Knight, Zidane - Thief, Garnet/Dagger - White Mage, Vivi - Black Mage
Nice looping back easter egg reference from the 9th Final Fantasy to the 1st.
That wasn't an easter egg my guy, the throwback designs were intentional.
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 sounds like a game you would really enjoy.^^
Of all races? Tard literally only white people are on it.
The more you listen, the more you think about the event. The more powerful it got
Ese momento en que sientes que estás solo , que tus problemas no le importan a nadie más... y tus verdaderos amigos te demuestran lo equivocado que estas. Ese sentimiento sin nombre es esta canción

I for one really miss speech bubbles in games. I know times move on and maybe I'm just being nostalgic, but sometimes voice acting can take away from the experience. Anyway, I'm just getting old. 'In my day...'
+giorgioskb Legend of Zelda.
The song, the memory, the friendship. Forever Final Fantasy IX.
Zidane is the best MC period.
That was far too much for me...
cr00cy I still love ff but a my true love is on 7 8 9 , that part of the motorbike i was like "wtf?"
LOL the motorbike. I wtfed at that too. Actually stopped playing it like an hour later
Tyler Martin Then you missed a great story. :P
Zackarco use ePSXE its free pop in the disc and play it
This game is just incredible. Iv replayed it probably about 20 times and it just never gets old. I would love to see a remake but it seems to always get missed out :( same with ff8
I wore out three discs (three first discs) because I played them so much.. I loved this game so much as a kid and still do.. Fuckin nostalgic
I remember the first time playing this game I was out of items and Zidane was up against this monster that kept sending him to low health. I was sure I was about to get a game over and then Dagger comes out of no where and saves him. I started to tear up after that.
This, Cosmo Canyon, and Zack's death in Crisis Core still hit them emotions hard
I don't even know if you're going yo read this, but I have the same tought
Cosmo canyon music and this track mean a lot. And well , the crisis core ending ... Man the feels

This must be the only game that has ever given me so many feels. Was a great game hope they can re-create the feeling again sometime.
15 years old this year... wow ;_;
Played through this game for the first time recently and this easily one of the best scenes I've ever experienced in any game 😥
Back when the story was the most crucial thing to get right in RPG's. :(
Yeah now it's just gameplay mechanics and getting as much money as possible
Well damn, slap everyone here in the feels who for a brief moment while the music played reverted into a nostalgic, pubescent human.
KYY it still is...? Some do better than others, but story is always the most important part of all rpgs. Hence why they’re called rpgs...
Some modern RPGs have great stories, like Radiant Historia and Xenoblade Chronicles.
The moment this starts to play in the game is EPIC. Zidane loses his soul but his friends help him along the way. Best part of the game in my opinion.
Final Fantasy, is there a gaming series with more feels?
So true so true so true ^^
It's not completely tragic, Vivi not being around in the end makes it tragic but Zidane gets the woman of his dreams.
