This is easily the best scene in the game, and when you first see it, it really hits you hard! So far, it's my favorite scene from all of the Final Fantasy games I've played.
True, it´s simply amazing. I´ve been around since the game was released, and it still affects me. The song and feeling of this moment will never be lost for me.
@@differentbeat88 Yes, this. Same. I was there when the game released back in the day. Even now, years and years later... This song does something to me.
After bonding with the characters for so long it really hits the player (at least in my case) very hard. To see the party come together to help Zidane confront his biggest fear of loneliness, after he helped them all confront their demons, it’s a special moment.
Something about the guy who tries to help the people he cares about and fix their problems so he doesn't have to think about his own is extremely relatable.
One of the really neat things about this scene is how the pairings Zidane encounters (Vivi/Eiko, Amaranth/Freya, Quina/Steiner) are all kind of "odd couples," characters who had nothing to do with each other prior to the journey but are now working together. It adds a lot to the whole theme of companionship in this scene.
Never thought about it this way! Literally these individuals would likely never have met and certainly most likely wouldnt be even be friends if it wasnt in part thanks to Zidane. Nice insight :)
What's funny to me is that they always made sense to me as couples. But now that you point it out, they make sense as odd couples too. This has always been among my favorite scenes in a FF game. You just gave me a new way to appreciate it.
It's true. I always appreciated that, outside the context of the adventure, each of these pairs would have been totally alienated by the other. Eiko and Vivi are a good way to set the tone, both of whom would be totally alone without the party.
@@turnkey_hole And Steiner/Quina blindly followed their one goal, thinking there was nothing else. Completely tunneled in their ways. Amaranth Freya were basically stuck in life, led and being lived by their past and not being able to look forward.
@@kieranhair37 Yeah they are weird but all pairings shared a trait pre story. Being alone/lonely (vivi/eiko), being so focused on 1 thing, they cant see the rest (steiner/quina) and being lived by their past (amarant/freya).
Part of the genius of this scene is how the music reflects what is happening. The chords tell you that this song should be slow and sad, but instead the tempo keeps driving it forward. Also, the score starts rather thin, with only a couple of instruments, but has more instruments joining in as it progresses. The instruments represent Zidane's companions, rushing to his side and telling him not to give up. The theme of this whole scene is: "You've done so much for all of us. Now it's our turn. You are not alone."
What makes this scene work for me is how Zidane's friends don't really catch that he's in his darkest hour right away. They stand by his side as a matter of course, and so when they actively try to remind him they have his back, you know it's the truth and not simply sparing his feelings.
Without a doubt the greatest scene in the history of the franchise. Whole game built up to it, with Zidane spreading infectious positivity to everyone at their lowest, only to have them pay it back when he needed someone to lean on. They refused to give up on him, even if he gave up on himself.
Man it makes so much sense why gintama and IX are my favorite pieces of media. Gintoki basically put everyone else’s feelings above his own the entire series a lot like zidane.

This scene captures that feeling beautifully.
Even heroes like Zidane can end up saying things they later regret and don't mean when they are at their lowest point, never knowing that they're the ones who need help next. He helped his friends out, and now it was their turn to help him out, even when he thought that he didn't deserve it.

Cried through this, it's an amazing representation of what depression feels likes (can absolutely relate), & coupled with that incredible music.... just couldn't hold it in.
This scene resembles what helping a loved one with depression feels like for those who care about that person. It shows that loved one in need not wanting to be a burden for their loved ones and rudely demanding to be left alone with their monsters. It also shows the perseverance that those around who care must have and the need for them to understand that the rudeness is depression speaking, not their loved one.
Yeah, Zidane was acting that way because he was not right in his mind when dealing with the depression of being a burden to his friends and didn't want to drag them off into their deaths any more, having caused them too much pain enough.
I have a lot of love for this franchise. 4 tore the limiter off of fantasy storytelling, 5 is what got me into JRPGs in the first place, 6, 7, and 10 are near-flawless masterpieces, and the rest are fantastic in their own rights, but my heart will always belong to 9. Zidane is a masterclass in protagonist writing, and this sequence is the best part of a game wholly made up of "best parts". *Everything* that has happened in the game prior to this was building up to this scene -- Zidane is mercilessly cheerful and his positivity is viral. Everything he's done has been to give his friends the best, happiest experience possible, to pick them up when they're down, and their background, attitude, and lack of receptiveness have never been barriers for him. Zidane sees who people can and want to be, and relentlessly pushes them to grow into that person. In return, in his lowest moment, when the chips are down and he's lost everything he knows about himself, the friends that he's fought tirelessly for prove that kindness *is* to be rewarded, that friendship goes both ways, and that love begets love begets love begets love. I have had my low points, and during all of them the people that I've put effort into have proven to me that they also put effort into me. I remember playing FFIX as a kid for the first time back in 2001. I remember being absolutely blown away by how good it was, and I couldn't stop playing it. It's a true classic that stands the test of time. Also, the soundtrack is definitely one of the best in the series. I think Nobuo Uematsu said in an interview that the FFIX soundtrack is his favourite.
How time changes…… look how beautiful the games were and know u see high graphics but the game can’t touch you like this …… I was 13 years old and it was remarkable for me I will never ever forget about this beautiful game probably my best … FF9 ❤️
Ff9 has always been my favorite game. I played it when I was 9. This game and the characters really shaped my vision of friendship. Back then, I did not realize what this scene meant, and that Zidane actually tried to get himself killed just to save his friends and not destroy the world. Dagga’s curaga scene is ultra powerful because it symbolizes the spark of hope Zidane needed at the most crucial moment, when his life was about to end (1Hp). I think it encourages us to never let a friend down, even when everything seems lost, because there is always something that can be done, to let our friends and family know that they are not alone.
Best Scene in the game. Like zidane, I’ve pushed away the people I’ve cared about most too because I didn’t want to be a burden on them any longer. And did they give up and leave me, even when I thought I was unworthy of them and their love? Never. It speaks to most of us, which is why I think it’s a classic moment in all of the FF games.
I was unsure about how I felt about the second half of the cast starting from quina to Admarant, but this scene solidified it all. Zidane has been a free spirit his entire life, he had protagonist energy as he simply went for what he wanted, and was able to give others that care free courage, and now here they all are reciprocating that courage back to him.
In all fairness Noctis couldn't combine with anyone to beat this masterpiece. Noctis really wasn't a bad protagonist but he wasn't a particularly good one either.
@@reapordeath I thought he was great, he had a good arc of being someone who required babysitting and wanted to run away from his responsibilities to someone who owned up to everything and could stand on his own as a man. Even Lightning has a good arc, maybe just not as pronounced. If by the end the protagonist recognizes their faults and overcomes them/accepts them, to me that's a satisfying hero.
@@Deadflower20xx I disagree, I found Noctis to be boring as a character. Not a whole lot changes from chapter 1 to chapter 13. His whole character arc happens while he is asleep anyway. Noctis is less of a character and more of a... 'reaction' I would surmise. He finds out his father is dead? That's pretty powerful character building stuff. But Noctis has one of the most unbelievable reactions I've ever seen from a character. There's denial, which was nice to see, but then he just accepts his father's death and pretty much skips the rest of the grieving process... I mean the biggest change to his character is from the crystal sleep. Literally just skips the biggest and most important piece of his character arc and he just glosses it over. I did recently play the royal edition and it certainly smoothed out some of this, but even still Noctis just reacts to things even though we are in direct control over him. But if you felt it was a satisfying character then you are certainly welcome to it. I shan't say your opinion is objectively wrong, but I most definitely do not share your enthusiasm.
As I said on a previous video: > But after playing the “finally completed FFXV” (Damn! That game could have been so much better if the time would have been invested properly! DAMN!!) I have to admit that Noctis had also had a considerable amount of development. Especially in the last campfire scene. I never expected him to come out like that.
Zidane reminds me of the 12th doctor, the most human of everyone. Hides the hurt in his hurt with a gruff exterior at times. End of the day, carries the weight of the world on his shoulders.
In 5th grade I used to hum this to myself at school when I couldn’t play. Of course I didn’t really get the whole existential meltdown thing, I just remember it was cool how he gets sad and his friends don’t let him kill himself. Of course now, “FF9 is my favorite game” (been saying that for a decade now wow) is a cliche, but it’s true. There has been none better since, and the older games upon scrutiny don’t hold up. FF9 ages like the finest wine however, it’s only more relevant and popular every year. I used to fear a remake but I would love one if they could just keep their hands off the story, it’s literally PERFECT. I think we’re better off without a remake though, this scene will hold up forever. Also using Mega Flare to end the last battle was sick, this is a great video!
Normal players: crying over emotional impact of this sequence Level 1 challenge players: crying over the fact that this sequence will force characters to level up
I’m imagining how darker Zidane’s voice would be when he’s like this before his friends managed to tell him that even if he tries do this alone, they will be there to protect him.
Rose of May - Beatrix Keeper of Time - Garland Dark Messenger - Kuja Jesters of the Moon - Zorn and Thorn You’re Not Alone - err, Amdusias, Abadon, and Shell Dragon….Yet it’s every bit as effective as any other song in the game - which really is a testament to not only how beautiful/fitting the song’s tempo is, but to how powerful this character moment is.
I like this part of the game, especially the song. Too bad the song plays only in this part of the game. I like how the characters come to help Zidane, but how did they get in through the locked doors?

How time changes…… look how beautiful the games were and know u see high graphics but the game can’t touch you like this …… I was 13 years old and it was remarkable for me I will never ever forget about this beautiful game probably my best … FF9 ❤️
Orchestration is over the top. Awesome scene.
This scene makes me water my beard in a manly fashion. To anyone this hits in the feels, you're not alone, we're here for you too.
I loved it
In one of my playthroughs Zidane and Dagger both went into trance during last fight of this sequence. It was so perfect.
Beautiful :)
God that is too perfect
Here at the lowest point of my life to role play what it would be like to have real friends like these 😢
hope you're doing well brother
❤
Hope things have gotten better for you
Unreal, finishing that last fight with Bahamut. Absolute chills
This song and scene are the magnum opus of the entirety of the Final Fantasy franchise. Fight me.
Definitely a top contender thats for sure!
This, this to me will always be my favourite FF. Its truly beautiful.
One of the strongest moments in the entire Final Fantasy franchise.
I remember this scene as a kid 💔😔
Best Scene in the game. Like zidane, I’ve pushed away the people I’ve cared about most too because I didn’t want to be a burden on them any longer. And did they give up and leave me, even when I thought I was unworthy of them and their love? Never. It speaks to most of us, which is why I think it’s a classic moment in all of the FF games.
This battle is pure genius, if it were made in 2020, it would win best game of the year for sure
FFIX is tied for the best rated ff for a reason. Storywise its great, battle wise it could just some tweaks. Though i didnt notice it at the time.
I just hope they dont ever remake it, it's perfect
@@Feja2503 which game is tied with FFIX?
@@tehmaimed VI is the other one.
8 and 10 were both great as well. 8 has Laguna, like I cant decide between Zack and Laguna
And i shall follow you to kingdom come if i must. I always starting crying at that part. Coming from Steiner, that is absolutely insane.
I was unsure about how I felt about the second half of the cast starting from quina to Admarant, but this scene solidified it all. Zidane has been a free spirit his entire life, he had protagonist energy as he simply went for what he wanted, and was able to give others that care free courage, and now here they all are reciprocating that courage back to him.
imo Quina and Amarant were weak cast members, but I think it speaks for the power of this scene that they don't detract from it.
There was a reason on my PSX memory card I had 2 save files: 1 for the overall game and 1 just for that moment.
I had a save just for the entrance to Memoria... The airship armada arriving to help fight off the dragons was another great scene...
Why do I strongly agree with this 10000000%
When you get a Dagger trance during this portion of the game.
That shit hits different
That should have been a thing. Like at the start when Zidane trances when she's in trouble.
Such a lovely game, story and a whole world that changed my life for good!
Favourite scene from all final fantasy games, still remember this from getting the game on my birthday on release day back on ps1.
Probably my favourite part of any game i have ever played
this scene made me cry over weeks, its such a powerful message
This is by far the best scene in the entire series, maybe even of all time. "There are some things kids can't understand."
Quina is such a great party member
Lightning and noctis combine cant beat this masterpiece
Truly an amazing scene
There is no one who can compose like Nobuo Uematsu.
ahhh Quina at her/his best again ... missed at her/his first attack xD
As I said on a previous video:
>
But after playing the “finally completed FFXV” (Damn! That game could have been so much better if the time would have been invested properly! DAMN!!) I have to admit that Noctis had also had a considerable amount of development. Especially in the last campfire scene. I never expected him to come out like that.
too bad they didn’t gave Lunafreya in ffxv her deserved moments.
The scene just oozes with symbolism with how he rudely pushes people trying to help him away to go fight monsters by himself.
Masterpiece.
Legit never fails to make me emotional and cry, what a fantastically written scene
Zidane reminds me of the 12th doctor, the most human of everyone. Hides the hurt in his hurt with a gruff exterior at times. End of the day, carries the weight of the world on his shoulders.
Sorry, the second hurt should be heart.
This game is simply a masterpiece.
8:32 wow that made me cry
Zidane's Depression...damn it hits us right where it hurts...
When someone you know is going through it, say these three words.
Normal players: crying over emotional impact of this sequence
Level 1 challenge players: crying over the fact that this sequence will force characters to level up
To this day, the best scene about how you think you can do alone, but can do better with your friends. FF9 is the best ♥
i'm not crying you're crying
we're all crying
There is just something beautiful about seeing Garnet finish off the last monster by summoning a full-sequence Bahamut.
Uematsu San really did a great musical score on FF 9
I’m imagining how darker Zidane’s voice would be when he’s like this before his friends managed to tell him that even if he tries do this alone, they will be there to protect him.
Rose of May - Beatrix
Keeper of Time - Garland
Dark Messenger - Kuja
Jesters of the Moon - Zorn and Thorn
You’re Not Alone - err, Amdusias, Abadon, and Shell Dragon….Yet it’s every bit as effective as any other song in the game - which really is a testament to not only how beautiful/fitting the song’s tempo is, but to how powerful this character moment is.
I like this part of the game, especially the song. Too bad the song plays only in this part of the game. I like how the characters come to help Zidane, but how did they get in through the locked doors?
I think the time difference signifies working around the locked doors.
this track hits hard man... good ol' times...
man best game of all time for me
this is my favorite scene from the Final Fantasy series.
The monsters' cries in this game have always been badass and bone-chilling at times.
My favorite part in the game
No offence or nothing but I see you ap Asf at this point, when I got here... Dagger saved me from the brink of DEATH!! Makes the whole scene more intense
I really think Garnet should have Tranced here, or maybe for even more cool effect everyone trancing as soon as they join the fight.
El momento mas épico de todos los final fantasy ❤
Me da escalofríos aún
