The 12 Best Steam Deck Games

  • I’ve had my Steam Deck for just over a year now and it’s fair to say that this comically large handheld has quickly cemented itself as my favourite console of all time. Not a small statement to make when the PS2 is also a console that exists.
I mean, come on, look at this thing. Can you blame me? Not only does it let you access the majority of your Steam library on the go, but its flexible OS also allows you to play games from multiple other platforms too. It even feels more comfortable to hold compared to other modern handhelds such as the Nintendo Switch.
But with over 10,000 officially verified games available to play on the Gabe Gear, it can be tough to decide what to start next. Vampire Survivors? Elden Ring? Painkiller? Dead Rising? Katamari? Katamari is probably the right answer, actually. Go play Katamari.
So, whether you’ve just unboxed your brand Steam Deck or are a longtime owner looking for something new to play, you’re in the right place.
Just a quick disclaimer before we start, there are an incomprehensible amount of games classed as playable on the Steam Deck. So many. A lifetime’s worth of games. That means that this list is not definitive. Consider it instead to be a curated list of 12 essential titles that demonstrate the Steam Decks' portable capabilities. None of these games are in any particular order, and I would personally love to know your favourite Steam Deck games, so make sure to let me know in the comments below.
With all that out of the way, let’s get started.

In 1995 I got a gameboy as young boy. I own the Steam Deck for more than a year now and to this day it still feels sometimes like being 6 yrs old unwrapping my game boy. It might sound silly but it's true. Before the steam deck I had a hard time motivating myself and find joy in play video games, it's a different story now. The other day I installed Kingdom Come which was left untouched in my library for years and it's some of the best fun I ever had.

Man me as well. I am 57. Ever since the original XBox with Battlefield modern combat that I had like 3000 hours in online I have just been (Whatever) On games. I play my deck all the time and own an Xbox X and PS5. Have you checked out High On Life? If you ever got into strangers Wrath the weapons are living like that, very cool game. The new DLC is ok but not great except the pinball gun that is cool as hell.

Hardspace: Shipbreaker is probably my favourite on Deck. Teardown is also pretty great, especially since it has native Steam Input support so the controls are much more easily customized.
Loop Hero is good for long term max battery life lazy gaming, like for when I'm watching Critical Role or something.
Caveblazers and Noita for pixel art sidescrolling roguelike actioners (though Noita's framerate can get iffy when things get really hairy).
The original Thief and Thief 2 are surprisingly great on the Deck. They run perfectly even with the TDP and GPU turned all the way down (when playing at the Deck's native resolution. You'll have to bump the GPU up a bit to get 60fps at 4k if running to an external display), so you can get great battery life, and they actually read the thumbstick as an analog joystick so you get precise analog walking speed control, which they don't do with the Steam Controller.

I think my favorite experience on the deck has been Telltales The Walking Dead Definitive Edition. It's such an excellent story, it plays flawlessly on the deck and each chapter is the perfect length.
For a few weeks I would look forward to coming home from work and playing through the next chapter to find what would happen next, which is a great length at about an hour - an hour and a half each.
The game all said and done is around 50 hours of excellence and it can be had for just a few dollars these days. It's a must.

I never managed to keep Vapire Survivor running properly for a complete run. Everytime the screen start to get filled after 15 minutes of a run, my deck start to choke itself down to 10fps when the screen is completely filled with monsters.

While it is "Unsupported" Metro Lost Light works fantastic at Ultra , 60 fps.
1080p docked high settings 60 fps.

I've been playing Mass Effect Legendary Edition; beside the stupid EA launcher the game has been running really well.
Another good game to play on Steam Deck is Tunic... well, to be honest, beside Phasmophobia I no longer playing on the PC, since I finished Alien: Dark Descent (because it didn't run on the deck) XD (now with city skylines I think I'm coming back to play on my main PC)

for me personally i wouldnt consider games like ff7 remake or spiderman remastered to be that great for the steam deck, the best games suited for it are those that can last at least 2 and a half hours and the power draw doesnt make it feel like youre in the sahara.

My favorite steam deck oled games:
    1. Night at the gates of hell (genre: horror/comedy)
    2. Portal 1 & 2 (genre: comedy)
    3. Resident evil 4 (2005) (genre: horror)
    4. Super Sami roll (genre: platformer)
    5. Bum simulator (genre: comedy)
In conclusion: even though the steam deck can run high quality triple A games, I find that the battery life is quite short most of the time (with usually 2-3 hours). I prefer games with 4 hours leggy of battery life

Can i pick your brains and ask which one you went for. From what i learnt last night on TH-cam the base model with a 1TB memory card is the one. But some seem to favour the middle one. My friend who's had one a while and works in computers said the middle one. Been umming and ahhring most of fhe year. But last night forced myself to buy one as with ny indecisiveness they will be antiques before i but one.
