Dude I’ve been looking for a video that could explain this for a year. I found this video while I was making the adjustment, I’m good to go and ready to tear it up🔥😎🇺🇸
I was going to do a video on the Sport Rider settings but your video is super clear and easy to follow so no need ! I adjusted my suspension the same way a couple of weeks ago and it feels like a different bike !
Thank you for this video I know you probably won’t read it but it made the bike feel so much more fun and stable I loved it it so much more but I also switched from a cruiser /sportster thank you brother
Stock suspension components, I (everyone) agrees you'll want maximum rebound damping. But for preload, you need to actually measure your sag and adjust your individual bike for your individual weight, and your bike's shock oil age/condition will affect your sag as well. Dave Moss videos will show you how to do this. My stock FZ09 is on level 2 for rear preload, and I'm 200 lbs. I'm GUESSING PistnRods has no static sag in the rear at his current preload setting.
I weigh 220 pounds and ride the 2017 version with TC, ABS and upgraded forks. I found that optimal settings for twisty riding for me were: 3 clicks up from stock on fork compression 3 clicks up on rebound from stock on fork rebound back out the preload on forks until 6 rings are showing. Jack up rear preload to 6/7. run rear rebound to max and back it out half a turn. What this setup does is allow the fork to use its entire travel, but the compression nicely dampens out the bikes movements. The reason for low (soft) preload on forks is because that drops the nose of the bike down and allows more weight to sit on front in corners. The rear of the bike is jacked up so it can allow more weight again to be distributed to the front. I did try to jack up the front preload but what it did was made the bike more jittery over rough surfaces, the bike was lazy and hard to steer into corners and it would wheelie at any given point upon corner exit. With the preload set low, I can easily outrun my supersport buddies, drag knee and have the bike be able to quickly shift directions. But that's just my take - I don't see stiffer suspension as being better, in my opinion and experience it makes things worse. We all know stiffer springs can transfer more weight but a softer spring will give you more grip. The end game is controlling spring movement so that you have optimal suspension travel that is evenly controlled.
Very dangerous advice you're giving here, you shouldn't load your front tire on a turn because it increases the contact patch of the front tire which makes the bike want to stand up and thus making you run wider on the corner than the input you want to give. Anyone changing their suspension to a soft preload need to fully understand that and be ready to give excessive input to the bike to make it corner as sharp as it used to, or risk either a collision in incoming traffic or panicking and dropping the bike. It works for you probably because you you're used to it but everyone else should take it with a grain of salt.
I own an MT 07 and I'm 85kgs (about 190lbs), I set my rear preload to 6, and my front preload backed all the way out (ebay adjusters) and it's pretty much perfect fot my style of riding.
I'm about the same height and weight as you man and I ended up setting the preload to get the right sag for my weight (used motorcyclist magazine guide to do that) and I used sport rider's rebound damping settings. It worked great!
hi may i ask what was your target sag and preload settings(rings showing and perch), because i feel that this setting is too harsh for me on bumpy roads. Much appreciated😉
The suspension is like a pogo stick. I was hitting some tight corners today and the bike started bucking like a freaking bull. Thought I was going to eat it and lost all confidence in the suspension. Add the twitchy throttle and got me spooked. Gonna have to do some work on it and see what I can do.
I adjusted my FZ yesterday...The shocks are weak, really weak. Which is why we are at the tighter end of the spectrum and even with all these its still weak. I have the 2017 FZ . FWIW The right way to do it is tighten everything in clockwise and make your measurements outward .
Doesn't it seem too stiff? I did my bike and it was good until I rode on a slightly bad paved road and it was hella stiff on that. I softened mine up a little.
Thank you. Ive been looking for advice on this. Im buc 50 and feel mine from factory is a little stiff. Need more absorcion especially on them twisties at 80 miles. Don't worry about them fat boys they cant keep up with us skinnys, specifically with the ladys ;) Thanks bro 👍
EnKay Moto I have my FZ09 manual out in front of me at this very moment and it says to adjust both shocks for preload. Only the rebound is controlled by the one.
Hawx that just doesn't make sense to me because in my mind, I would think that the one adjustable fork would be different than the other, which would mess up your cornering. Right? I suppose the must have it linked together some how.
I'm 5'5 also and have one with no issues... I cant flat foot but I can touch enough with both feet to still feel comfortable without shifting to one side or the other
Rider sag front and rear??? Rear free play??? Front end bounce??? Hehehe...sorry about the questions...worked as a race mechanic for years...its never that simple to set up your suspensin...if its that simple...suspension tuners would be out of a job...
You’re recommending people set up the bike for settings that don’t even apply to them. ..or even YOU. Please don’t do what this video says and plz pistn respond to this video after you realize why you are misleading people dangerously. Just listen to you’re video and hear everything that you said wrong. Yes the FZ09 has some serious suspension issues, but this video is EXTREMELY misguided. .

I don't get why PISTNRODS ain't got more views..it's a decent and educational channel..The views don't match the 30+ subs. I think he's a cool dude..

Great stuff....and just a few minutes makes a world of difference. Much appreciated...
You're right. The suspension isn't perfect after this adjustment, but it's a heck of a lot better! Thanks for posting this!
Thank you for this video I know you probably won’t read it but it made the bike feel so much more fun and stable I loved it it so much more but I also switched from a cruiser /sportster thank you brother
thanks for the advice. just adjusted my wife's mt09 (uk) transformed it. she'll hopefully enough the new settings on her toy. ;-)

You are messing up geometry of the bike. How the hell should a bike that has 193 kg and short wheel to wheel distance be lazy and hard to steer???
Preload doesn’t make your suspension stiffer. It just changes your ride height. Compression makes your springs stiffer (compress slower or faster)
Yea we know that’s why the rear shock also has a dampening adjustment......
@@207shooterz what does dampening do?

Great Video man!
Question,
Does this setup is good for the 2018+ model?

Thanks for the info. Just done mine. And its a totally different feeling. Its amazing
Kris Strappazon gonna do mines tomorrow lol how does it feel ?
Matty Cakes. Feels good. Got more control. But id suggest try it out. Test ride it and see how it feels.
Kris Strappazon imma do it right now lol
My HERO! 😍
This is great ! The bike feels more stable thanks
Don’t you do the same preload on the other side ?
Doesn't it seem too stiff? I did my bike and it was good until I rode on a slightly bad paved road and it was hella stiff on that. I softened mine up a little.
I find the front fork a little harsh set this way. I have to back mine out a little.
you should know that preload should be adjusted based on your weight and not some magazine.
Hi, I noticed you said your 5’6 in height same as I. How would you describe this bike being we are shorter lol
whats the maker of that 14mm wrench of yours? That selector looks very handy.
Thank you mate
Where can you see the different adjustments? Like for different weights. I’m 5’7 140 what should I do?
I noticed you have one shock where you screw in and then back it one turn I have a 2018 model it has both shocks with screws on top
Is the xsr900 2018 same suspension as mt09 2014 _2016 model
Thank you. Ive been looking for advice on this. Im buc 50 and feel mine from factory is a little stiff. Need more absorcion especially on them twisties at 80 miles. Don't worry about them fat boys they cant keep up with us skinnys, specifically with the ladys ;) Thanks bro 👍
so i guess i wont need to adjust my suspension ever unless I lose some weight lol im almost 6ft and weight 200 most of it is muscle ok lol
Did you do the rebound on both forks? Just making sure because I'm the video you only did one side
EnKay Moto FZ09 only has rebound on one leg
Saajan Chowdhry what? Why would the only have it on one fork? So the forks aren't going to be equal anymore?
EnKay Moto I have my FZ09 manual out in front of me at this very moment and it says to adjust both shocks for preload. Only the rebound is controlled by the one.

Could someone send me the link from the description? I clicked the link and I get a 404: Error.... Help a bigger fella out :)
Thanks for the video, my fz handles much better!

Hey I'm 5'7" and ur 5'6" are u tip toeing I'm thinking about getting this type of bike and I'm curious I'd I'm even tall enough
You are. I'm 5'5" and I have this bike. I don't flat foot on it though.
I'm 5'5 also and have one with no issues... I cant flat foot but I can touch enough with both feet to still feel comfortable without shifting to one side or the other
in the back > 5 = no static sag , its bad :))
Everybody keep in mind that suspension is very specific to your weight
I luv the sfx 😂😂😂👍👍👍👍👍
omg.this vid has so less views. rip you man
Lucas Tiemersma 💀
PistnRods Reupload, but WHY???
🎯🔥
Mine has a screw on both forks. So the comp is clutch side and the ten is brake side.
what year is your bike? You know the newer bikes have different suspension?
Yes I do know that. That’s why I left this comment for other people.
@@drewbyhudspeth Good. Other people will be here soon that also don't know what year their bike is.
I didn’t see the what year is your bike comment. Mines an 18

Why emulate the settings for a dude thats 60lbs heavier than you though? Probably have 8mm of sag, rip taint. 😂
this shock absorber is junk. it need ohlins same sp model
Is that Mitsu? Lol
Was thinking the same thing
Anyone in Hinesville Savannah area ?
