    Does anyone else just *love* the fact the video starts exactly where it should, with him pushing off? Not rambling for 5, 10, 15 minutes about how & why he's doing it. Thank you for that.

      yes but is anyone else pissed that he didn't wait until daylight to make landfall? If he was so all fired eager to arrive he could have kept it to himself then went back out the next morning and filmed an epic arrival with proper lighting. I want my 40 minutes back.

    Cool video. My dad and I sailed from Berkeley, California to Honolulu, Hawaii in 1985 on a 25 foot Nordic folk boat. We used only celestial navigation and compass.(no such thing as GPS back then) It took 28 days to Hawaii and we had planned to go to Tahiti after that, but we stayed in Hawaii instead. I’ve been here ever since. Aloha from Hawaii 🤙🏼

    • @brianwalsh7931
      @brianwalsh7931 5 ปีที่แล้ว +419

      uterotourettes15, no, actually we intended to sail around the world. But that was when we had the 30’ Tahiti Ketch. That boat could have made it around the world. My dad lost that one in his second divorce, so he bought the 25’ Nordic Folkboat. A beautiful little wooden boat with a lap strake hull. That one was pretty squirrely in higher winds and didn’t lend itself to self-steering, but it was built sturdy and we sailed it up and down the coast to see if she could handle the open ocean. We decided to just try the passage to Hawaii and see how that goes. My dad had single-handed the Tahiti to and from Hawaii twice, so he knew what to expect. We hit a few storms and got banged around some. Then just as we got close to the tropics we were utterly becalmed for about 5 days. I think we drifted backwards for about a hundred miles. The tradewinds got us moving west again. We spotted Haleakala on Maui and decided to cruise to Oahu and dock at Ala Wai harbor where my dad knew the harbor master from previous trips. That was a great adventure but that little boat kicked our butts. My dad got a job on Oahu as a sailing instructor and I worked in the boatyard. I guess Hawaii kinda grew on us and we decided to sell the boat and stay for a while. My dad got married to a Canadian tourist and they retired up in Canada. Sick of the relentless tropical heat mostly. I’ve been here since 85’ but I travel to Canada to visit dad.
      Anyway, sailing across the Pacific in a small boat is not for the faint of heart. But when you get to your destination alive, there’s nothing in the world that compares to that experience.
      Aloha.

    Dear Sam, I believe scarce few here truly understand what you accomplished. In raw reality. A fickle mortal, venturing into the belly of the archetypal beast for a month, without safe harbor or lifeline, in the only spirit that could make such a feat possible. The quintessence of the Epic Journey. The stuff of deep-time mythology. In modernity. Absolutely incredible! This is the kind of experience that defines a lifetime, that so few will ever know on their deathbed. You, Sir, are my Hero, and I could never say something like that superficially. Respect. Truly.

      Not to mention, those same people who support them and often are or have been those people themselves then have no issue turning around and berating say, for random example Brian Laundrie or Charles Manson or Ted Kazynski, and calling them villains.
      No. American soldiers are a bunch of softies. Hence, this comment.

      I know, I wish they could be forced to explain themselves. Like, if you ever wanted to thumb down, your camera would automatically switch on and a robot voice would instruct you to give a reason or a $100 dollars would be deducted from your phone bill. I could be quite a cathartic thing for people to see what they are projecting. Or it would limit the negative thumbs.

      Yeah, sailing solo is really boring. At least he wasn't clobbered by a really big wave, or a cargo ship.I'm not in favour of lots of self-videos, but he kpt them short, and the two birds weren't all that boring.
