I enjoy this guy's videos because he doesn't ramble on and on when he narrates, plus he has a good attitude.
That’s why we’re all here :)
True that. Too many others complain about "bitterly cold temperatures" in the low 40's and "terribly high seas" of 10 feet or so. Nothing seems to faze Sam, and his attitude is an inspiration.
Attitude is everything. He doesn’t complain but rather hunkers down and makes do with what comes his way. In such a divisive world we need more examples of men who can weather the storm with a positive attitude along the way.
Yeah, Sam might say something like “we just came through a violent storm and we’ve lost the mast and there’s a huge hole in the boat and all emergency gear was lost overboard”, all with that Sam smile on his face.
For real. His gentle spirit is very refreshing. No nonsense.
Classic Sam as he heads out for 11 day open water sail, "I really wish I knew where this water was coming in from."
The difference between a doer and dreamer. Some people will spend their whole life trying to make a boat perfect others just do it and deal with the problems as they come.
Boats get wet.
@@simpaticode Never saw one yet that didn't.
@@ccjmanray8202 Mine don't but they are 1/80 replica frigates lol. Their sails will never feel the wind.
Смелын ребята яхтсмены,такие сейчас воюют за Украину и уничтожают русских фашистов.
Note to self: Drilling holes in boat helps to keep water out.
Thanks for the laugh
@@daneulekowski929 It's well accepted that Curly from the Three Stooges invented the "Water-let'er-outer."
@@philmann3476 Classic. I'm a plumber, and I laugh hysterically every time I see the episode, "A-Plumbing We Will Go". Especially when Moe says to the homeowner (whose property they're destroying), "Don't tell me how to do my job - beat it!"

So much good energy from all your videos Sam. Dreamer & Doer ❤️
They say a good sailor has a spare for everything. Sam is such a good sailor, he does everything with one hand. That way, if something goes wrong, he has a spare hand.
"half hands on deck"
Single handed sailing. 👍
Yep, he is soo good, he uses pelican clips to secure his life-lines, and to make it more fun adds dangling string pull tabs, yeah they would never pop open.
For CS we tape the out gate latches for beer can races not to mention if the boat is going anywhere close to "off-shore"
Not saying he is not good, but a big part of me thinks he is winging it with regards to much of this.

I’m just a Middle aged lady in Kansas. I can hardly wait for new videos…never set foot on a sail boat…I watch your videos over and over…something soothing and yet exciting about them…thanks for sharing your travels !
I'm a 72 year old sailor that's been in a boat yard for 9 months refitting my 34 ft trimaran. Enjoying your video
Join you soon sailing a warm ocean.
@@ddagger I guess she's not interested. :)
Once knew a 40yo man from there so I took him To Ft Pierce beach because he somehow never saw the ocean. How'd he get down here without ever seeing it? Well he took I75 via the turnpike right to Ft Pierce via vehicle atta there. I put a blindfold on him right up to the beach and when he took it off and looked out he cried. he could NOT believe it. Yeah I walked him right up to the edge so he could hear the surf before he saw it and it was rough that day as this was in the middle of January. Blew him away he was humbled. Marie are you one of those? If so be prepared to witness such a huge expanse of water.
Get out and go take a vacation on a sailboat. I'm 72 and have ALWAYS sailed my sailboat alone and luveaboard her now 38 years!. Life is too short to live it vicariously.
@@ddaggerI'm refitting my sailboat for the second time. She's a 1982 Ericson sloop that I have sailed all over the gulf coast, Pacific and Alaska! Plus I liveaboard her and would never think about having any other sailboat. I love the work of keeping her sailworthy.
As an older man raised thousands of kilometres from any ocean I watch these videos with both amazement and sadness. Amazed at this man’s fortitude, sense of adventure, musical talents and his positive outlook on life and only saddened by my own fear of open water and the regret of never trying to conquer that fear. I may have to rectify this.
Hah, I was the other way around. Raised beside the sea, and always fearless. Got a job on a Greek cargo ship when I was 18 thinking it was the first of many voyages, but the power and sheer loneliness of the sea quickly turned me off it. Ended up exploring the world by land instead.
Don’t get me wrong, Sam’s voyages are inspirational. Give it a try!

I understand your sentiment when I ask myself at 30, could I do this? Really ask myself. It's serious what this guy is doing. So much respect for Sam jumping in the the whales, they were almost a sign of natures respect after he made it through that rough spot. What a way to shake hands with destiny by jumping in and adding to your story. Brave men sail the world in small boats.
@@OmegaProxy Loverly way to start ie just make a start - the lake will be awesome.
I love solo sailboat content on TH-cam...thats prob why these videos get so many views....
"Cooking cheese on the floor, cooking cheese on the floor" Never change Sam
Its rare to have a 45min sailing video on the internet at 2021 without music & other nonsense. This is great, loved the episode , thanks! …were those whales orcas?? And you swimmed with them😂 omg
No they were not orcas but porpoises. A.K.A pyöriäinen in Finnish. They can even be found in Finnish waters sometimes.
it's called "false killer whale" in english
Orcas do not eat people (only boats!).
@@Perkelenaattori Looks more like pallopäävalas (pilot whale)
Pilot whales!
If I had half the mental consistency of Sam I could’ve accomplished so much more in my life. I have all the technical know how, but lack the emotional stability to get where he is at. Respect to you Sam. Keep these vids coming.
I can relate to this comment so much.
One of the realist comments ever wrote.
Ditto my friend
Me too. Attitude plays so much more of an important role in life than anything else.
Celebrate what YOU have been able to accomplish in the past and plan to do in the future!!! Never discount what you’re capable of 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
I like his videos cause theyre not full of music and endless rambling about sponsers and stuff that doesnt matter
" So we're not off to a very inspiring start " is the story off my life 45 years and counting
well you have the next 45 to fix that. LOL
Ohhhhh child things are going to get easier
I'm 62 and just getting started. Still I wish I had the extra 20 years that you have.
“Yeah, wind will be up to 50 knots”
That scares the crap out of me on land
Thankfully he's part of the wind like a plane is while flying.
Seriously? Don't go to sea.
Just fell asleep to this man just sailing. Love him so much and he is such a calm character.
This is everything a sailing video should be, right here: dolphins (that wasn't a school, that was a freaking major public university!), rigging fiascos, water intrusions, furious winds & crashing seas, plus a triumphant match with a tuna. When viewers are exhilarated to see land, you've hit the mark.
And don't forget an original music score "cooking cheese on the floor" 🎶
Pilot whale I think 🐋
I think those were orca's or a type of killer whales - not dolphins
Pilot whales
@@JohnMcCarthy100 They were Pilot whales, not Orcas. Orcas are a type of dolphin.
Forty-five minutes of pure sailing! You made my day. Thanks for putting in all the work to share it with us.
Great sailing and without all that crappy music!
this video was more than sailing, laughing in times of crisis, leak on boat, jumping in freezing ocean with whales that look like sharks, fishing for fish surviving
I hope it will never happen but even if boat is sinking Sam will still smile! Legend bro 👊
Sam - You're the man, I've been subbed since the Hawaii passage. Every time you post I get excited to go on an adventure with you. Your bravery is immense! Thank you for documenting these voyages for us all to enjoy.

It's the business ,💯😂
The Hawaiian trip probably has 3-4 million views now..I subscribed back then too but don't think nack then he even 20k..SOLO SAM
@@brucemartin2605 right? I remember thinking "this guy needs way more subs"

Yeah Hawaii was just nuts
This guy is young and doing something that is a classic skill many of whom have none. He’s a living legend in the making if he isn’t already one.
Swimming in the Atlantic Ocean with a pod of False Killer Whales… thanks for jumping in, that was an amazing event.
was looking for a comment where someone could confirm these were false killer whales, thanks!
Porpoises probably en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porpoise
Pilot whales :)
pub before customs, that one of the most Irish things I've heard in a while . Well done young man 👍
The guy that stops his boat in the middle of the North Atlantic, ties himself on (hopefully) and jumps in with a pod of Pilot Whales? RESPECT DUDE!!
He doesnt tie himself, he sometimes throws a rope in the back of the bote in case the bote starts moving or he falls
Whales and dolphins are NOT the issue... but a puff of unsuspecting, sustained wind very well could be.
Seeing the rope around the tiller totally reminds me of my dear dad! I sailed with him almost every weekend as a child. He used to use a rope on the tiller to hold the boat on course while he popped down below to make our food. The times on the boat and the adventures we had are my best childhood memories. I have not been on a boat since my last sail with him in 1995. Thank you for sharing your story Sam. it brings it all back for me!
Those pilot whales were amazing. You're a brave lad jumping in with them!
Yeah they are like cousins of the Orca. Pretty impressive row of teeth.
They might actually have been False Orcas. Even cooler
Incredible, you can just sense their consciousness. That pod was checking out that boat on purpose, and they recognized Sam's kindness. If you ever wanted to experience communicating with aliens, there ya go. Just amazing.
It's so unique that you took the time to stop and swim with the pilot whales during your passage. Most sailors would be terrified of even thinking about jumping in when they are alone in calm water. Needless to say that most sailors would be terrified by those huge waves, but not you, Sam, you are a great sailor! Keep sharing.
Camera on a stick.....
@@gerardboorsma3418 Nah, he clearly jumped in.
Glad to see that you found time to drill a hole in your boat...

intense sailing, tuna catch, whale-swimming, what a great episode and passage! 😎👌

Hello Skipper Sam
Excellent passage of 11 days and escorted by many Pilot Whales.
Wow a wonder... 🌊⛵🐋
Indeed!
And Sam goes "somebody as crazy as me out here"
haha well nailed!!!
and with a full rig up!
man those whales seem like they were greeting you and guiding you i’m glad you cherished that moment and appreciated it like you did
Absolutely it is amazing🎉
New Sam vid = Win.
Seeing its 45 mins long = Priceless.
Thanks Sam.. Love your work!
I appreciate that!
love the solo aspect not gonna lie, feels like we're on there with you.
You’re obviously a knowledgeable sailor, but you make everything seem like luck plays a big part in your safety? You keep me on edge , that’s for sure. An enjoyable vid Sam, thank you.
You go, Sam-urai!
Just discovered this channel. Not a sailor (yet) but seriously considering it (NOT at your level). I am amazed at how you take every issue you encounter in stride and always seem to be prepared with the ingenuity, tools and parts to deal with the . Love this channel. Keep ‘em coming!
What an absolute legend. 💯
Watched several vids from this channel, skipping around back & forth etc. I like this channel. Sam is a no nonsense, no BS reporter on the sailing progress; wish more were like his channel. Nice..
Great video, some classic Irish seas on the way in. Welcome to my town, Kinsale! Hope you enjoy your stay here!
Great sailing videos sam, better than telly here in the uk take care ok 🎉🎉
"....things became a bit of a blur after that." lmao Love you, Sam!!!
40:50 I could sit and watch those waves rolling in for hours. My favorite part of the video was that 30 or so second clip of the waves rolling in while Sam just filmed
Ah, Sam. Great to see you got the Absolute in the fridge. Pleased to see you properly prepared :)
Good for you. Enjoy your beautiful small sail boat. One day, you will write a book about your traveling experiences. God bless both of you.❤
Next time you catch a fish you got to clean the guts out first. It makes it easier to fillet. Also instead of tossing it overboard chop it up in pieces and toss it in a pot of water. You can boil off the excess meat and collect it to make sandwiches and even make a fish stock although I don’t think that would be very tasty.
And keep that knife pointed away from your other hand...
Or just cut steaks and pick at it with a fork.
Looks like he didn't bleed it properly, those fillets had too much blood on them
A soup would get the whole fish, agreed.
28:50 - I can't believe you dropped the sails to swim with whales. That was pristinely beautiful!
Wow. 45 min flew by. So emotional to see your visitors. They looked like a pack of curious "sea Labradors", wanting to check you out and play a little. Great vid. Happy you made it ok. Thanks.
man that part with the dolphins following you and you going swimming with them... straight up amazing dude
Sam, your blowing everyone else away with quality sailing videos, good job
Aww man I was so ready to the Pints of Ginness at the end
You can definitely tell the difference between your sail to Hawaii on the Swedish Fish to how experienced and confident you are with your sailing now! Great video. Stay safe and great adventures! 👍
@DubStylee he moved up to a little bit bigger boat. Maybe a 28 to 32 footer.
This video is epic in such a level that mortals can't fathom.
You sailed 1700 miles to get a pissed on pints at the pub and you didn't even tell customs you arrived?
Hats off to you sir!
I always enjoy Sams videos. Ever since I was accident damaged in 1992, my left arm has been very disabled. Great to see how Sam handled single (literally) handed sailing. Inspiring stuff!
I thought Sam was joking when he said I wanna swim with these guys. Wow! you have a lionheart! Hats off!
Congratulations! Last time I was in Ireland was in 92' and I was backpacking. Took a ferry from Cherbourg, France and we got our butts kicked the whole way. Great job and enjoy that amazing country.
My 3rd time watching this episode.👍👍 . .it's the captain calm and confident, and Pickle is racing towards European adventures as if she's been there before!💯
This has been your best video to date Sam. Loved it, brings back so many good memories and inspires me to make more. Gotta flick you a few bucks in gratitude. Thanks for the great passage and content.
Fair winds.
This has to be the most authentic sailing channel on TH-cam now. Real sailing.
Sam,
Congratulations on your successful passage and video production. You are an inspiration. I took the lesson to get as much rest as one can, whenever possible, to be ready for unplanned events and to be awake more for the increased traffic when approaching landfall.
The pilot whales encounter was reason enough for me to get out there, again. Thanks!

Hitting pubs in Ireland if one has not experienced you don’t have a idea of Irelands cutter. So lovely…
You're the man Sam! Thanks for another awesome video!
Good to see you here. Waiting for your sailing channel!
Man, I feel you and Ted Lasso would make best friends in a heartbeat!! Love you both!! Can’t wait for your next video!!!
I have a deal with my father that we will sail the atlantic, from Norway to the Faroe Islands., before he gets too old. He is turning 60 this year. Time to get a boat and learn to sail 😂
next time you are going pickle your fish you can do it right on the boat and you can keep it for months and bring back treats for your friends..... you can dry it too for jerky and then it will stay good in the fridge for a month or more
Congratulations and well done. You earned that Guinness.
FYI you can freeze cheese!!
Good Nz morning Sam. Recently discovered your channel, liked what I saw, so have subscribed. Great episode mate. Good fishing too. Just a quick tip when hand lining solo. Just keep one end of your line attached to your reel at all times. Pull the line in and drop the line into a bucket as you go. Don't muck around winding it on to the Reel....too much fiddling around. Deal w with the fish, first, then once you're sorted, and free, tip your bucket upside down emptying the line into the cockpit. You'll find its already loosely coiled the right way up, then just have to wind it back onto the reel. No tangles. I found myself yelling at the screen, saying "drop the bloody reel. Get the fish in first. We're going to be here all day.". It's called being efficient. Trust me it is easier for the solo sailor. Having lived through 74 summers, I am able to still enjoy sailing from my arm chair. Looking back I see I've got a lot of binge watching before I catchup. Take care and atb from down here. Until next time. Bon voyage.
It’s always amazing how the ocean mammals like to follow the boat and frolic around.
Those waves were HUGE!!! Scary watching it on my phone, I can only imagine how intimidating they were in person! Great content as usual, Sam!!!
So I watch these and think: man I would love to try that. Then I see that boat getting bobbed around by the wind putting rails in the water and I’m like. “Nah, Sam doesn’t need any competition out there.” Bon Voyage man!
I had to laugh when you got close to Ireland in bad weather the locals were out sailing in it for fun.
This is gonna be the first time I’ve ever said this to anyone in my life but you my friend are truly a great/awesome human being
I'm learning so much. Thank you, Sam Holmes, for providing vital information and first person perspective. I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that your videos inspire me to learn more, and perhaps even to attempt this type of thing myself. Cheers!
I like how you are calm, knowing that you are about to face a storm.
I love Sam the thinking sailor
He’s not just about the view
When bad things start to happen
He knows exactly what to do
So If you sub and like
The next verse is up to you
This dude is living 💯
I love this channel. Such a solid dude & always so interesting to watch. No other TH-cam channel captivates me to watch for 45 min but Sam Holmes gets it done!
I watch at 2x
The best content on the internet hands down.
When you're waiting for your favorite youtubers to post more content so you can watch while on the treadmil, and he posts a long enough one to not have to switch mid-run. THAT feeling!!! Thanks Sam!
P.s You should come to the land of pickled herrings ;)
At 38' talking about the freezer. It might be worth considering this option in future: Get a good quality ice box/esky for things like cheese etc, use freezer to freeze whatever plus two large plastic bottles of drinking water, rotating the bottles between fridge and esky and keep freezer going all the time and the icebox cold. :)
Sam, your videos, editing, and narration are absolutely amazing. For those of us stuck at our office / desk jobs, this is an awesome escape!
Excellent, Real sailing for sailors. Unpretentious, not dramatic, and very good at-sea videography. Thank you Sam…..
Love the way that you just keep on smiling even through bad times you’ve got a smile on your face
Sam, you know I can handle some pretty nasty waves - remembering my days on the Grady with Pop Pop, but watching you and that water makes me nervous! You are amazing! ❤️
Man... ive never sailed in my life... but you have me addicted to this channel. Maybe one day...
Sam, Congratulations on Ireland!!! Hands down this is your best sailing video yet. Your a true passage maker, FANTASTIC !!

I'm living vicariously through your sailing videos, Sam. This is awesome! Thanks for sharing!
Sam is the sailing man. No fluff, no trash, none of the BS. Just sailing. 10 out of 10
Just stumbled across your channel and I’m hooked! I love your kind, humble, quiet demeanor and how calm and at ease you are. Your editing is thoughtful but not loud or disruptive. I would pay for a track of 60 minutes of nonstop wave sounds from your boat. So chaotic, but peaceful!
28:47. LOVE those whales playing piano. How do they do it?
Subbed, glad you chose Ireland 🇮🇪..I have lots of family over there,Beautiful place, especially Galway bay.....Safe sailing dude 🌊☮️...Amazing how the dolphins follow the boat, it’s like a game for them, very playful..They sometimes use the seaweed to pass around and chase,Fantastic 👌..That was a 200 dollar tuna ..
Such a zest for life he has. I love that there is no music in his videos. He is doing what this 68 year old man has always wanted to do but job, family, etc held me back. Maybe soon......
That looked like one of the roughest passages yet. Cheers from Vietnam!
The charm and chill of this man in all conditions is amazing!
Sam, your positive, can-do attitude is always enough to brighten anyone’s day! Keep doing your sailing around the world and tackling those challenges!
"Wish I knew where all this water was coming from" "wouldn't be a Sam Holmes sailing video without drilling another hole in the boat" - comments like these are why Sam has to solo sale - nobody else could do it! Great video!
