  • LBC Radio presenter James O'Brien was close to tears on BBC Radio 2 today following the announcement that Steve Wright has died aged 69. The beloved DJ presented programmes for BBC Radio 1 and Radio 2 for more than four decades.
Steve's family confirmed his death "with deep sorrow and profound regret" in a statement today. The sad news was included in the 5pm bulletin on BBC Radio 2 today, with presenter Sara sounding emotional as she responded.
She said: "It's really hard to know what to say about the news of Steve Wright's passing, except that we are all absolutely devastated and shocked and blind-sided by this news. Steve was an extraordinary broadcaster and a really, really kind person.

Hearing his shows sound so chaotic but being told they were scripted to perfection is an eye opener. No show has ever made me laugh so much before or since. I’ve been listening to his shows on here the last couple of days and they’re still brilliant today!

There was only one Steve Wright on the radio. He set new standards in the world of broadcasting. The characters, competitions, and many other features made his show unique. Interviews with celebrities and other people made his show special. Factoids were usually interesting and amusing. There will never be another Steve Wright on the radio.
I used to tune in almost every day when I was driving tractors on the farm. I met and spoke to Steve and Simon Bates many years ago in Inverness when they visited Scotland with the Radio 1 Road show way back in the eighties.
He was just the same character in person as he was on air. RIP Steve you'll be sadly missed by many.

He got me through my apprenticeship many years ago when I was young, thanks to his amazing afternoon show.
The disgusting sycophantic bosses at the BBC who aren’t fit to lick his boots, are just paying lip service following his death….but the bastards didn’t care when they ditched him from his prime time afternoon show!!

Rest in peace Steve, godbless you!

Imagine James, a DJ entertaining people, playing records, talking to guests and letting them be the important one. Loving everyone and not pushing their own political agenda down peoples throat.
If you can, you may one day be on popular radio.
The difference between you and Steve is that he was full of love and you are full of hate.

Steve Wright was part of a generation all too soon gone in the name of progress. That era of radio will never be surpassed. It's all become a brainwashing platform for bland, mindless "music" with bland, mindless "presenters," especially at Radio 1 and others like Capital and Kiss. Steve Wright was innovative and entertaining when Radio 1 was a real radio station. A class act gone too soon.
