Crushing news - my wife told me yesterday evening when she got in from work, as we stood in the kitchen. I made a pretence of busying myself with drying some mugs, but I was just not wanting her to see the tears welling up. This man was a prominent part of my youth through the 80's - from my late teens and into my twenties - especially fond memories of listening to his show whilst down at the beach. His show reflected the carefree attitude of that decade, when everything seemed less stressful, the media didn't have a stranglehold on public life, the high streets were a myriad of wonderful and varied shops and businesses, people enjoyed life and got on with things, no one stressed over stupid things like words or 'pronouns'. Life was for living. And Steve Wright's shows reflected that, but also celebrated that fact, and made us laugh, putting folks in a better mood regardless of what kind of day they'd have. Steve Wright, along with the likes of George Michael, and many others I could mention, were a gift to the people. It appears the woke 20 year olds run the BBC. What they like is what is forced on the rest of us whether we like it or not. You can have an audience of millions and be very popular and experienced but that counts for nothing. You are over the hill at 45, you are too conservative, old fashioned and a boring old idiot so you have to go. It was noticeable that all the regular, older, presenters were got rid of wholesale over the last few years. They were well loved and I suspect that many did what I did and that was follow them to their new channels. These woke 20 year olds live in the metropolitan elite London bubble and have no idea about their audiences. Radio is uniquely comforting especially with familiarity. I never got over Wogan leaving the breakfast show, Chris Evans was OK but not my cup of tea and all the susbsequent presenters just got worse and worse. I gave it up a long time ago. I suspect Steve Wright died of a broken heart at not being able to communicate with his loved audience on Radio 2.
Hopefully you’ll be pleased to hear I’m not one of those woke Gen Zs. I’m 21 but I loved listening to Steve wright on Radio 2. His passion and knowledge of music and genuine love for it was incredible. Listening to all the messages from listeners today and last night makes me realise how much I missed of him all those years. A true radio legend.
Totally agree with the woke 20 year olds and would like to add that’s one of the reasons why this country is rapidly getting worse and to the same extent , the wider world. - my two penneth.
People hate change. I remember when my mother was up in arms when the young upstart called Terry Wogan replaced her beloved Jimmy Young.................
I agree somewhat, but keeping a 68 year old on kinda says it all doesn't it?. What's that saying about the state of radio with nobody coming through the ranks. It's going the podcast route these days and people like 4 hours of alien, space, universe, drug, political debates etc now with comedians, sports personalities etc like Joe Rogan and lex Friedman. Radio as we know it will be long gone in 10 years of it hasn't already. Let's be honest radio isn't the 80s or 90s anymore.
Proof the BBC hasn't got a clue, they cancel his show and keep the clique crap like Ball etc. The most entertaining DJ I've ever heard, Voice Over Man and ask Elvis were hilarious, he had me in tears laughing.

Only one option. the off button, no loss now that so many good ones have gone.
I agree with everything you have said. Turned the BBC off years ago, radio and television.
Simply the best…Steve Wright🎉❤️❤️❤️
Proof the BBC hasn't got a clue, they cancel his show and keep the clique crap like Ball etc. The most entertaining DJ I've ever heard, Voice Over Man and ask Elvis were hilarious, he had me in tears laughing.
Liz Kershaw..what an amazing tribute. We loved him more than words can say. 💔💔💔💔
