BBC treated him badly as in changing a presenter at retirement age that has had a 30 year stint in the seat but still giving him 2 shows a week to present? Oh and he said multiple times that he was fune with it?!
I remember driving around Leeds and hearing his first ever Serious Jockin’ segment. It was totally hilarious! The BBC deserve everything they get for letting their top broadcasters go!
If I put on a Steve Wright broadcast especially from the 80ties it would create a whole new happy ambiance around me in my apartment on this day in 2024 and beyond. That is the magic he had.
You don’t really realise how much someone has an effect on your life till , it’s gone, I can remember having the radio on in my first job , I was working alone and he kept me sane and motivated ; have grown up with he’s voice in the background of my life through the good times and the sad bad times , going to be strange not hearing him , RIP mr wright
He's been the voice of my working life for 24 years, and before that my school life. We owe him a debt of gratitude and thanks for providing a soundtrack to our lives. He will be missed, now with John peel entertaining heaven.
i miss serious jockin on a Friday afternoon, R.I.P Steve ❤ switched over to GHR when the BBC axed his afternoon show, i now listen to Ken Bruce, Simon Mayo and Paul Gambaccini on Greatest hits radio
Steve Wright in the afternoon was so in touch with their listeners....I ran a printing company at the time and the whole staff listened in and went home in a such a happy mood, we even named suppliers from his characters..... the paper merchant guy was known as Cid the Manager....someone was Damien the social worker and of course we couldn't leave out Mr Angry...and we all shouted out at the radio...GET THE GEESE OFF....Steve...you will be always remembered 🥰🤩🥰
What a beautiful kind loving man. He put his vocation of caring for his listeners first. A man of true integrity. Shame the bbc have no integrity. They don't care for the poor and lost of this country who turn to stars like Steve Wright..Ken Bruce Jeremy vine for reassurance . Oh BBC how low you have fallen . Sending love to all who have held their heads up high. God bless you all. 🌻🌻
He was not sacked. He was moved. He had two BBC weekend shows. Look, when he was moved from the breakfast show in favour of Chris Evans, the ratings went up by 600,000. Steve was moved from the breakfast slot back to the afternoon slot. It worked.
I think Radio 2 are finished. Rubbish shows rubbish DJ's who have no interest of music (Johhny Walker excepted). No doubt he will be missed. We pay our licence money for this.
Steve Wright got ever single warehouse worker through the afternoon, when they would have other wise flagged by the time his show started. We would get in to work just wanting the afternoon to come round because everyone would cheer up when his show started.
Steve made millions hsppy, thinking they knew him giving them a warm feeling 6 days a week. He paid a big personal price for that. His marriage and health. In jobs I have had I refused to work weekends as my personal life was more important.
Glad to say he made listening fun, i would listen as i drove into work and much later listen in the afternoon, I stopped listening to Radio 2 when they pulled his show, a very sad loss.
Steve’s afternoon show was a joy. From his interaction with Janey, to the old woman and all the facts he informed us about, such brilliant entertainment. Time flew on a journey home full of laughs and good feelings. Bless you Steve, RIP x
I use to sit in my studio in isolation and it would be raining outside and to hear Steve’s voice would brighten my whole day. The Ask Elvis was a wonderful time also. His theme song l use to love hearing the glockenspiel tones played also.
The angels will have a music master, Rest in Heavenly Peace Steve, you will be missed immeasurably, thankyou for the hours you spent making many a persons afternoon that liitle bit brighter, Thank-you 😢❤🎵🎶🎙🎛🎤🎧📻😢💔🫶
I used to listen Wright Around the World on the BBC World Service, when I moved to Mauritius from the UK. I love the show and it just reminded me of the UK because i was homesick. RIP Steve 🙏🏼
I put Steve’s passing in the same poignancy as when we lost Freddy, George, Bowie and Amy. He was the most amazing broadcaster we’ve ever had the honour of tuning into, his sense of humour was incredible, as well as his music, his voice had a sincerity about it and a continuity of reassurance . RIP Steve and thanks for everything xxx
As you get older, you begin to see your life becoming less and less relevant, because each year brings new heartache as you notice the people you grew up with, friends, relatives and of course celebrities becoming frail and in some cases they pass away. This is part of all our lives sadly, it’s just the way things are. Steve Wright was a huge part of my younger self and to know he has gone, well it saddens me greatly. As a young working man in the 80’s, I listened to Steve every day in the factory where I did my apprenticeship. I remember how we would all be in hysterics listening to him and his crew take on the many zany characters that brought tears of laughter to my eyes so often. Then in later years, his afternoon show on BBC2, a ‘slightly’ more matured Steve, but with all the warmth and humour intact. Just a wonderful guy in every sense. I know he was a bit of a tortured soul, as are many who open their hearts so freely and who give so much of themselves to others. I hope he has found peace now, and if there is a god, a heaven, I know Steve will be playing all his favourite hits there for eternity. God bless you Steve Wright.
I had a crap job for a couple of years ago but we were allowed the radio ...his music was so eclectic it kept me sane .Loved his work with Phil Cornwell in the late 80s so funny .
I grew up in the 80s and left the UK soon afterwards. He was Britain for me, its voice and its humour. Sadly, both he and the Britain I remember are no more…
First heard Steve Wright on Radio 1 as a Teenager in the 80's. Moved on with him to Radio 2 and Top of the Pops as well. 53 now and he really was the soundtrack to our lives. Lost many showbiz personalities from my formative years over time sadly but Steve's passing has really hit me! The World of Radio without his voice is something i really don't want to contemplate. Bless you Wrighty and just simply, Thankyou. ❤
I loved listening to Steve Wright in the afternoon every day he was bloody amazing and I used to love his disco medley on a Friday I'd be in work hoovering and listening to his show always made me smile and laugh, epic legend Steve Wright
I listen to planet rock nowadays, but grew up listening to Steve Wright. It was lovely that the evening presenter on planet rock done a tribute to Steve and shared his story of growing up listening to Steve. I just burst into tears at that. Just hit me how much Steve affecting all our lives at some point..Rest in peace.
I grew up in the eighties, and always listened to him on Radio one & the Summer roadshows, he always put a smile on your face. The way life is at the moment in this country/world, it was lovely to escape the doom & gloom, & listen to him on Radio two. I'm going to miss him so much, rip Steve ❤
He was born to be on the radio and cheer us all up Which he absolutely did. Pure talent and graft and dedication. Bbc radio has a lot to be desired these days... look at all the presenters whos contracts were not renewed, given the boot or retired... Steve Wright will never be forgotten... we will talk about him and post memories of him and his shows and he will continue to make us smile. Lets hope there will be a huge statue or memorial to such a Great Guy.
Many memories of steves radio show when my children were young in the ,80s very fond memories ❤. Always remember seeing steves face & was so different to the vision i had connected to his face ❤😊
Great broadcaster, relating to real people. Sadly missed and his comforting and witty words. BBC again showed they should be hived off, as it does not represent any decency.
Steve Wright was a friend I never met,but always listened to his radio shows for over 30yrs while at work, there will never be another voice over the airwaves like his,R.I.P Wrighty and thank you😢
It's lovely to hear all the great tributes to Steve from his friends but to hear the BBC organisation/controllers is sickening after the way they treated one of their best assets. Shame on you BBC
The BBC snubbed a man at the top of his game - doing everything right but told he is being replaced as part of an inclusivity agenda ! How was he ever going to come back from that? sadly he never will now. R.I.P Steve.
Can't say enough about Steve. It's like losing a mate who kept me company when I was working, driving around the UK. Didn't know too much the BBC management issues and I'm glad I didn't. I prefer to remember him and his great programs. God Bless, R.I.P.
Steve was a good guy, the BBC treated him badly and here they are lapping up all the tributes to him. Shame on them.
BBC treated him badly as in changing a presenter at retirement age that has had a 30 year stint in the seat but still giving him 2 shows a week to present? Oh and he said multiple times that he was fune with it?!
Well that's the bbc for you !
Too bloody right he was in fact too good to be on bbc
he was good memories good old days
Not sure if he was pleasant as I knew someone that worked at AMEX and said he was really a really rude customer
Steve Wright kept me sane and amused in my first proper but boring job in the afternoons in the 1980s. Sad loss. RIP Steve.
He kept us all going. I don’t think people understand. Unless they listened
Steve was like a comfort food when growing up. He will be sadly missed.
That’s a great way of putting it @sailing, he certainly was a source of comfort and amusement. God Bless him ❤
Well put ❤
A fitting tribute from his friend Paul Gambaccini. God bless, Steve.
Steve was that special part of England and now neither are here anymore ☹️
Beautifully said. So true.
Amen to that ❤
The whole of the country listened to him not just England, he was on the radio for all of us.

Shame on the BBC
Everyone has their time. He was replaced with a 50 year old white dj. Steve Wright was a similar age when he started the show.
If I put on a Steve Wright broadcast especially from the 80ties it would create a whole new happy ambiance around me in my apartment on this day in 2024 and beyond. That is the magic he had.
Loved all the voices he brought to his show
Mr Angry, old woman, elvis, and many more brilliant
Cancelled for being wrong age, gender and color.
Except he wasn't cancelled. He was still doing a show every week....
and liked and loved for it .. that is the worst
Well said Paul, Steve was a class act as you are also 👍.
A class act who got arrested for raping young boys and he knew about Savile
My radio station won't be the same!
From the age of 16 until 49 ..his voice was my background..
RIP..my radio friend!..
Steve Wright in the afternoon made my younger days at work so good, best presenter ever on the radio,,,R.I.P MR WRIGHT, our EARS will miss YOU.

Absolutely, and that was my experience too. The 1980's working in a factory, Steve made my days so much easier.

Serious jockin, used to absolutely love that, and factoids
There are many of us who switched to GHR..I did when Simon left as I missed him so much
Absolutely shocking how they treated him RIPsteve wright
Don't forget that the BBC did a number on Paul Gambaccini as well. Full protection for Savile, Vine and Lineker.
And Ken Bruce got sacked by the backstabbing barstuds !
Rest in Peace Steve Wright, the best radio DJ ever 😢
Resonated with us all. Entered all our lives. Taken too early. Thanks for the wonderful memories. RIP Steve.

The nerve of the BBC to pay tribute to Steve after sacking him, ruining his life and crushing his spirit, is appalling.
