Ritchie Blackmore arrived late for the show, having just been released after being held for several days in an Austrian jail, so he hit the stage without any warm up. Catch the Rainbow from this same show is next level.
The band were two hours late starting this gig as Ritchie Blackmore had been held overnight in an Austrian police station after whacking a bouncer who was being a bit too rough with the kids at a previous show. He literally came straight from his cell and onto the stage and it shows. The band are absolutely on it from the first note and all the frustration from the band and crowd is blasted out in this first song of the set. Stunning performance.
Yep, this song, Gates of Babylon, Sails of Charon by the Scorpions. 1976-1977 saw Blackmore and Uli Jon Roth set a course that guys are still following to this day.
Ah yeah, a true classic. This song, and Gates of Babylon on the same album, are more or less the genesis of power metal. Blackmore and Dio never really saw eye to eye when it came to lyrics, but their version of Rainbow put out some of the best hard rock/metal the 70s produced.
@@vincentbonfigli2954 true enough. I'm surprised Blackmore's Night is still going strong. If anyone would kick their spouse out of a band, it'd be the Black Prince.
The lead singer Ronnie James Dio is considered by many as the VOICE OF HEAVY METAL because of his pure, glorious and magnificent voice. Take note, he never went to a vocal lessons. He passed away due to cancer in 2010. Anyway, every time I hear Floor Jansen's voice, it reminds me of Dio because of the similarities of their vocal styles.
Notice the reel to reel behind Ritchie Blackmore. He used to record all his solos and play them back later to see where he could improve them. I saw them on the same tour in Newcastle UK. Awesome gig.
Imagine someone would have told me when I was 14 that this is going to be appriciated 46 years in the future, mindblowing. I attended to this live in -77 in Gothenburg Sweden .... And it still works
Kill the King. Sounds like something from Black Adder. Love this song. Ritchie Blackmore is one of the all time great guitarists in hard rock and metal and now medieval renaissance music with Blackmore's Night.
Everyone overlooking Bob Daisley here. The man who wrote like every Ozzy song of the 80s. Ronnie,Ritchie, and Cozy are recognized always bexause obviously are rock and metal god but Bob always forgotten. No idea what happened to David Stone though but man underrated key player
Bob held his own through this song. Especially when he kinda harmonized in the the latter part of Blackmore's solo and moved a bit into where he was standing.
don't take this the wrong way but WTF its going to be outstanding. its Dio and Blackmore . one of the best singers and guitarists in the history of Rock and roll. now through in Cozy Powell . One of the greatest bands ever !!!!
Stargazer live. Holy crap. Dio gives me chills and Blackmore's solo Cozy Powell beats the drums like they owe him money. I've never heard s song like that. Highest recommendation.. love your channel.
When true Legends joined in to the next Super Group after Deep Purple!.....RIP DIO & POWELL........ "ON STAGE " is still one of the greatest Live Albums ever made !
Featuring the amazing Cozy Powell on drums, saw Rainbow on the Long Live R n R tour and they were immense, Cozy did his 1812 overture solo as the drums were raised over the audience.
My alltime favorite band. The line-up was top notch with Ronnie, Ritchie, Cozy an Co. I mean besides Ronnie we have a man on the guitar who created so many world-wide-known riffs, he was/is just my favorite guitar player.
awesome singer, one of the best, and RAINBOW my most beloved hard rock/heavy metal band of all time(with Ronnie James Dio as lead singer), I think that Ronnie James Dio really shined his total splendor when he was the frontman for RAINBOW and BLACK SABBATH, in both bands he (Ronnie), showed all his power as a singer and a writer.
I had the pleasure of seeing a show from this Tour on long island New York 1977. The guitarist Ritchie Blackmore you watched on your last deep purple video of Highway star..Had left purple a few years earlier to form rainbow.. oh and that rainbow you see going across the stage was real it went along with the music and it was wild..
This song is about a chess game, according to Dio who wrote the lyrics. Hence the queen doing all the killing. "Danger, danger, _Queen's about to kill_ There's a stranger, stranger life about to spill Oh no, _get me out of harm_ I need a spell and a charm Fly like the wind _I'm no pawn_, so be gone, speed on and on _Kill the king_ _tear him down_..." It's written from the perspective of someone on the chess board, either a pawn who resents being a pawn, or someone who has been thrown into the game and put in the place of a pawn. Probably a metaphor not only for warfare politics but for anything happening to small people who get caught in the machinations of people in power.
Also, this was quite a special night, as Blackmore was still being held in jail in Vienna for getting into a brawl with a security man when the show was supposed to begin. They finally got him out but it was already past midnight when he arrived in Munich. The audience were offered a refund in case they chose to leave, or else wait until God knows when they would be able to begin the show. It wasn't a big venue and in the end I think I read somewhere that about 700 stayed. Hence Ronnie thanking the audience like 32 times during the show for still being there.
This concert started at about 11.30 pm. Ritchie Blackmore (guitarist and band leader) was arrested at the end of a concert in Austria three days before this - he'd kicked someone in the head who was manhandling a young girl in the audience, and the guy turned out to be part of the theatre management. He'd been released from jail a few hours before & had been driven from Austria to this venue in Germany, arriving just in time to go straight on wearing the same stage clothes he'd been arrested in three days earlier.
TY. Ritchie kick the crap outta security bloke, and rightfully so if you know the story. but, he was tossed in the klink, which is why the delay in this Mag Gig. cheers
That's funny, your British accent, lol. The song was fun too, as you said, and the group really into it. Seemed like it was the first song of the show. They really should practice that introduction a little more though, lol.
I saw Rainbow in the early 80ies, with another singer, Joe Lynn Turner. They nearly blew the roof of Stockholm Isstadion by playing Difficult to cure (Beethoven 9th) I think there's a live recording of that
It's funny how all these youngsters get focused on Dio, you actually went to see Rainbow because it was Blackmore's band back then, he was the main draw, I saw this tour in Koln Germany and back home in Newcastle, 2 nights at the wonderful City Hall.
As much as I loooove this video, "Kill the King" is one of my favorite Rainbow songs(and I have this entire concert on dvd), I have to say, in my opinion, the studio versions are far superior. The Dio-era of Rainbow, the first 3 studio albums & the subsequent Live on Stage, are my FAVORITE time of the band. The 2nd release, Rainbow "Rising" is THE ULTIMATE Rainbow album to me! After 'Long Live Rock & Roll' Ritchie wanted to go more commercial, Dio didn't, and he went on to join Black Sabbath, ushering in my favorite era of that band(I see a pattern here!). R.I.P. Ronnie James Dio
Just goes to show you what creative differences (and a certain ego) can destroy. BTW, 1977 was the year I graduated HS so this was my era and what I listen(ed) to.
I'm sorry but I have to say this. Am I the only one who is a little depressed that these reactors, who are in a rock band, seem to have no idea who these legends are? Ritchie Blackmore was referred to as "the guitar player". I really like these reactors, but this saddens me!
Most of them aren't born yet in 1977, don't blame them, they don't even know deep purple's child in time which in those years was very popular, for a reason I don't know the US forgot all those great bands from the seventies and eighties and if they remember then they say oh they're from the US instead from the UK. And now it's just funny/sad to watch them quoted "to what kind of music did I listen all my years" my answer 🤣 crappy music 😜😜
Ronnie James Dio
The best rock and metal singer ever!
Can never go wrong with anything by Ronnie James Dio, whether its in one of the band's he was in or his solo stuff. Rip. Ronnie
He was just the ultimate badass
and R.I,P, Cozy Powell great drummer he was and Richie Blackmore brilliant guitar solo,s
Rainbow '77 Munich concert is a fantastic concert.... best songs were "MIstreated" and "Catch the Rainbow" Absolutely magical.
Ritchie Blackmore arrived late for the show, having just been released after being held for several days in an Austrian jail, so he hit the stage without any warm up. Catch the Rainbow from this same show is next level.
So true! Catch the Rainbow (live) is something else. Totally underated
Love 16th Century Greensleeves too.
Still I’m Sad, blew me away live, thought I went blind 🥴
The best version of Catch the Rainbow. It's one angry solo.
Wow! Didn’t know that. Even more impressive performance. Was that in a book?
Super talented band on all positions, Catch the Rainbow and Mistreated from the same concert are two killer tracks to!
"The guitarplayer" are the guitar GOD Richie Blackmoore, also in Deep Purple
He and Dio basically oversaw the birth of heavy metal. Sorry Tony!
The band were two hours late starting this gig as Ritchie Blackmore had been held overnight in an Austrian police station after whacking a bouncer who was being a bit too rough with the kids at a previous show. Short stature but huge voice,RIP Ronnie James Dio!!!
R.I.P Cozy Powell, one of the great drummers of all time ever
love the song R.I.P. Ronnie James Dio
The beginning of power metal as we know it, iconic!!! Thanks for sharing!! Love
Yep, this song, Gates of Babylon, Sails of Charon by the Scorpions. 1976-1977 saw Blackmore and Uli Jon Roth set a course that guys are still following to this day.
Try Catch the Rainbow from same concert!

Blackmore had issues with all his singers whether it was with Deep Purple or Rainbow!

excellent rythmic double bass of Cozy Powell monster of précision
A must listen next, Long Live Rock and Roll. Classic anthem. And of course, Ronnie 🤘😎🤘
Notice the reel to reel behind Ritchie Blackmore. He used to record all his solos and play them back later to see where he could improve them. I saw them on the same tour in Newcastle UK. Awesome gig.
Best band ever 🌈💜💥⭐🙏🏼...thanks sweethearts 🤠🔥🌴
Here we have "legends of music"
The Man in Black is God

This is a killer album. Ritchie puts on a guitar clinic

We all know how legendary Dio, Blackmore and Powell are, but how about that insane bassline and the Keys! WOW.
This is a bangin' song with Cozy Powell on fire with his double bass drums. 😀

What an Ephing Line-up. It's like the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame, if they had any idea what they were doing.
Ronnie James Dio was a great singer, he left us too soon.
I'm thankful we did get 50 years of him working as a professional musician.
