Greatest rock singer and the-best-guitarist-in-the-world on the same stage. Cozy Powell (RIP) on drums... one of the best. That was a supergroup in all but name.
Blackmore is wearing the same clothes He wore 3 nights earlier. He had just gotten out of an Austrian jail For breaking a security guard's jaw with his foot. This was going to be a big concert and filmed in Germany. Didn't start until 12:30 AM everybody waited they knew Blackmore was driving from Austria. He still blew their socks off. Definitely one of the best guitarists to ever walk this planet.
Ritchie Blackmore is my favorite guitarist. You probably didn't pick on Dio's intro where he was saying something about song being originally from "the name escapes me" which is in reference to the song being originally on Blackmore's previous band Deep Purple's Burn album. Blackmore left Deep Purple and used Dio and his band Elf on Blackmore's first album before firing everyone except Dio. BTW, the drummer here is the late, great Cozy Powell.
Dio was being snippy cause Blackmore wrote the song with Coverdale, much as I admire Dio's singing I still think that DP's live version on Made In Europe is better.
What is Deep Purple going to do, sue their own guitarist for stealing the song he wrote? This is peak pettiness and I love it. Also I would poach Dio from his own band 11/10 times
i saw many legendary strat players from Clapton , Beck , Kenny Wayne Sheperd and more fender guys but Ritchie here teach how to start and finish a performance ! DIO+RITCHIE = MONSTERS ( RIP RONNIE ) .
My favorite performance ..... and the same Munich concert the song "Catch the Rainbow" is basically as good. Ritchie's guitar solo is so frick'n good in that song.
I prefer Tony Carey on keys over David Stone (who I thought was the weakest of all the keyboardists of Rainbow)...but, yeah, Powell, Dio & Blackmore are inconquerable.
Completely disagree with you on the line-up. The previous years line up with Tony Carey (keys) and Jimmy Bain (bass) was FAR superior! Just compare this version of this song to the one from "ON STAGE" for the undeniable truth 😁👍🏽
A lot of legends on that stage. Ronnie James Dio, Ritchie Blackmore, Cozy Powell and Bob Daisley, David Stone did a good job on the keyboards as well. Rock in peace Ronnie and Cozy.
Same here,Sydney Hordern Pavilion- so good went the next night too, couldn’t do that today, tickets were so cheap for the best performance I’ve ever seen

RIP Cozy and Ronnie. your music will go listened to in all eternity.
What a powerhouse band, talent for days all over the stage. Plus the unpredictable Blackmore factor that drew a lot of people to Rainbow shows so they could watch Ritchie.
I've been a Dio fan for a long time, I remember him with Elf! I live in Central NY in the town where he grew up and started out in bands. He's still remembered with reverence here. We miss ya, Ronnie! \m/

If you enjoyed this you need to listen to two more Rainbow tracks. Stargazer from the Rainbow Rising album and Gates of Babylon from Long Live Rock ‘n’ Roll. Both absolute killers.
I was at very last Rainbow live show with Ronnie James Dio as vocalist. It was at the Palladium in New York City and they opened with Kill the King and then did Mistreated which was an extended song live and included what some accounts say is a song called Blues but I just count it as an extended Mistreated. Anyway, after the song Ronnie apologized and said they could not continue like this the band left and the show was over. I've read a couple different accounts on why they cut the show short. In conclusion their next show was cancelled and then Dio would leave Rainbow before the next tour. The two songs I saw were great, especially Mistreated where Blackmore was incredible on guitar.
David is the original and the one filled with tons of raw blues emotion. Dio's version is alot more theatrical, and he uses his technical expertise magnificent. I love both versions as they are so different and from 2 of my favorite vocalists. The common denominator..again. is Ritchie. A tough man to deal with, I'm sure. But when inspired must be one of the greatest musicians ever to work with.

Yes, you should also check out the original version with Deep Purple and David Coverdale on vocals. Dio is my favourite singer in the genre, but Coverdale is not halv bad. The only problem with the California Jam recording is that Glenn Hughes is stoned out of his mind and unfortunately decides to screech the song to pieces in the end. But Coverdale is impressing, especially considering his age!
Along with Dio you are listening to the great Ritchie Blackmore(Deep Purple) and the great Cozy Powell on Drums( Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Whitesnake) and every other band that needed a great drummer!

0'20" Beautiful Smile 🦋 ! Ciao Sir Travis . Bruce Dickinson i think payed some tributes also to him ! Anyway i don't know even if in 1977 knew him because of Iron Maiden's heavy britain Influences and growing very distant where Ronnie was becoming celeb ! But during lives the charisma of Ronnie was incredible also in the Early Days ! The introduction and playing really outstanding . The fills on the Toms and especially the work on guitar with those effects for that time is pretty innovative i think . Obviously i can do some random parallels with Led Zeppelin (in a certain way) ! Listen around 6'26" ! Do you think good electric sound for that Era ? And around 6'36" ! What a Musician ! 7'55" Nnailed it Sir Trraa' ! Deep purple with Ian Gillian on vocals is the bomb!
Love some Dio on vocals but always loved Graham Bonnet when he sang for Rainbow. Such good pipes on All Night Long & Since You've Been Gone, and as for that white suit and aviator glasses! 😎
Guys, are you aware of how the gitarrist you're watching are? Dio is a God..but so is Ritchie Blackmore!
Richie Blackmore was driven from jail in Austria straight here.
Rainbow - since you been gone 🤘
Ronnie James Dio 🥰🤘🏻❤️🔥 my favorite singer, can't actually explain the love I have for that man...my God! 😍
"Child In Time"(1970) by Deep Purple, next
The transition and some part even switching towards progressive are Coool ! 13'03" Nnnnailed it Suzii 🙋♂️
Check out Deep Purple s version too...and Whitesnake live in the hearth of the city version..Great all three versions.. its written by Blackmore an d Coverdale
