Shaun Smith Well yeah, all Dio lyrics are riddled with metaphors and similes. This song is no different. However, the lyrics are clearly riddled with multiple chess references. I suppose I should have initially said it was “inspired” by the game of chess. Cheers.

@@reclaimthestage I've read that a lot and also that Dio himself claimed it was a about a game of chess, but I've never been able to find the actual quote. Would be trademark cryptic Dio lyrics, of course. And makes sense as the Queen's doing the killing.

Ritchie Blackmore on Guitar, Cozy Powell on Drums and young Dio on lead vocals what more do you want. Rainbow is so freakin good and this is one of my favorite songs, I never expected someone to request this wow. I try to play this on drums everyday because its like an exercise for double bass drumming. Cozy Powell is an amazing Metal Drummer but very underrated RIP Cozy and Dio. Check out Stargazer by Rainbow. A Light in the black is the continuation for Stargazers story so it would be good reacting to both.

This entire album is pure fire. It can be considered the prelude to "Black Purple". Dio took away a lot of lessons from Blackmore when he moved on to Sabbath, and it shows on the inestimable Heaven and Hell record. Ironically Ian Gillan would take up the vocal reins for Sabbath when Dio exited, before reuniting with Blackmore and reforming Deep Purple. This song is very much a Blackmore song with Dio singing. Check out Gates of Babylon for a Dio song with Blackmore on guitar.

    • @mojoriot2293
      @mojoriot2293 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Gillan wasn't the best voice for Sabbath, but they had some great jams..."Zero the Hero" is probably my favorite. Unfortunately when I hear Gillan's Sabbath songs, it just sounds like Deep Purple to me. I still like it, just doesn't have that Sabbath 'creepiness?' 'darkness?' IDK, just not the same...imo. 🤘😬

This is best line-up from Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow. Funny you mention British Rock but only Ritchie and Cozy were British on this LP. Ronnie was American, Bob Daisly an Aussie and David Stone a Canadian. Anyway, Ritchie has been influencing guitarists for 5 generations. He co-founded Deep Purple another Iconic band with incredible Singers. Ian Gillan especially. Check out Child in Time 👍 Ritchie's solo here is incredible too btw.

Ritche Blackmore left Deep Purple and formed Rainbow in 1975, Ronnie Dio was there first singer, he left after 3 albums, fronted Black Sabbath for a while then went out on his own in the early 80's, he would play with Black Sabbath from time to time. Rainbow would have 2 more singers and some very successful yet more commerical hits.

Blackmore founded this killer band after leaving Deep Purple due to musical and personal differences! He got unkown Dio from a band called Elf! Dio left Rainbow after 3 killer records and replaced Ozzy in Sabbath and went solo after 2 albums!

Without Blackmore Dio would never have got to where he did, Elf as a band were going nowhere, only two albums in 7 years at a time when bands had to sell records to keep going and without record company support they would never break big, Elf had toured with Deep Purple but were never going to crack the big time, Rainbow put Dio on the international stage and led to his future success, you have to think that at the time nobody went to see Rainbow live because of Dio, they went because it was Ritchie Blackmore one of the greatest rock guitarists of the time.

Ronnie was in Rainbow before he joined Black Sabbath.
Rainbow's first incarnation actually featured most of Ronnie's band Elf - Ritchie formed Rainbow after being dissatisfied with the musical direction Deep Purple was going in during the MK. III era which featured David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes on vocals, and so formed Rainbow.
Ronnie sang on the first three albums (Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, Rising and Long Live Rock and Roll), then left to join Sabbath as he wasn't happy the band was moving into a more commercial direction. He was replaced by Graham Bonnett.
Cozy Powell would follow suit a little later and went on to continue work as a session drummer as he had been during a lot of the 70s. He would join Black Sabbath as well, during the late 80s, lending his signature thunder to the awesome Headless Cross album (1989), Tyr (1990) and Forbidden (1995).

React to more Rainbow! The early stuff with RJD is the best although they became more pop-sounding because Ritchie wanted to sell more records, which is why Dio left the band. Originally, I think Ritchie was touring with Deep Purple when they had a support act called Elf, Dio was the singer of Elf. They both liked songs about wizards and magic and castles and fantasy stuff and Ritchie was fighting with Ian Gillan, the singer of DP, a lot. So Ritchie left and formed Rainbow with RJD, the whole band of Elf minus the guitarist became Rainbow.
I'd recommend listening to Man On The Silver Mountain, probably Rainbow's answer to Smoke On The Water riff-wise. It's more neoclassical than rock, but thats what Rainbow was about for the first few years.

In the early 70s, Ronnie Dio was in a country rock band called Elf. Elf opened for Purple in 1972 and 1974, and Ronnie's voice impressed everyone in Purple. Roger Glover hired him to sing on a side project he did called The Butterfly Ball, and when Ritche left Deep Purple he hired the entire lineup of Elf (minus their guitar player) to perform on what he called "Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow". As soon as that album was recored, Ritchie fired everyone in the band except Ronnie, replaced them with British musicians, and then they toured and recorded two more studio albums (and one incredible live album).
It was after Ronnie left Rainbow that he got the offer to replace Ozzy in Black Sabbath.

Live in Munich, the whole album is incredible. This was a very special night, as Blackmore was in jail in Vienna for getting into a brawl with a security man when the show was supposed to begin. They finally got him out but it was already past midnight when he arrived in Munich. The audience were offered a refund in case they chose to leave, or else wait until God knows when they would be able to begin the show. It wasn't a big venue and in the end I think I read about 700 stayed. Hence Ronnie thanking the audience like 32 times for being still there :)

In the progression of Ronnie James Dio along the lines of heavy metal ( he was in a few bands before this era) He started in Elf that eventually toured with Deep Purple. When the guitarist Richie Blackmore left Deep Purple he started Rainbow and had to have Ronnie. Dio joined him along with a few other members of Elf. After 3 studio albums and a Live album there was a falling out between Dio and Blackmore. So Dio left. After Black Sabbath had their break up with Ozzy the only choice was Dio to front them. He was there for 2 studio albums and one live album. Again there was a falling out so Dio left and started his own band, DIO. They made like 10 studio albums and a few live albums. In the early 90s there was an attempt at patching things with Black Sabbath and that did produce the Black Sabbath Dehumanizer album. Eventually there was a working relationship with Dio and Black Sabbath starting in the early 2000s that remained until Dio's death in 2010. The patch up with them was so much that they called that project Heaven and Hell so that it wasn't Dio or Black Sabbath but friends working together. In all of these bands Dio always brought members of previous bands with him and worked with a lot of the same people through out his carrier.

Agreed ...but the other songs from this concert (1977 Munich) are very close to his greatest performance .... Catch the Rainbow, 16th Century Greensleeves, Long Live Rock and Roll, Man on the Silver Mountain, Kill the King, and Still I'm Sad.... all awesome as well.

Wasn't this also the album with the incident with Baal? They recorded that in an old castle near Paris, which had once belonged to French composer Chopin. IIRC the castle was rumored to be haunted and Blackmore and Dio, who were into spiritism at that time, held séances there. After a time Blackmore conjured an evil spirit who claimed to be Baal and proceeded to cause all kinds of chaos during the recordings. Not all of it was funny, as Wendy Dio got pushed down a stairwell. Story as I remember is they went to a local priest asking for help, but he threw them out of his house. I think on the album cover there's even a note referring to Baal. Man, there were some proper soap operas going on with Rainbow (and Sabbath!) back in the day, I'm telling you!

Stargazer is THE Rainbow track to check out. Epic.
As for Ronnie James Dio, he was in a band called Elf which opened for Deep Purple from time to time. In 1975, when Ritchie Blackmore decided to leave Deep Purple and form his own band he remembered Ronnie and ended up using Elf (minus that band's guitarist) as the original lineup for Rainbow. Ritchie later replaced the musicians from Elf with other players, but he kept Ronnie. Dio sang on the first three Rainbow albums before moving on to sing for Black Sabbath in the early 80s.

Hahaha! Dude...I was watching, & waiting for you to figure out who was singing! I actually saw the moment when the gears started turing, & realized you knew the voice. I was hoping you'd hang in there & try to figure it out, but it was a great reaction nonetheless!
I got a couple RJD songs for you, from different bands/solo. But I have a different idea for my next patreon request.
    First, a question...
Instead of doing a 6-7 min song, would you do a 'double-shot' of two 3/3.5 min songs?
    I have 2 ideas: A double-shot of Rob Zombie?
Or, 2 short 'hair band' songs, possibly power ballads?
The power ballads I have in mind would go well with your new RATT video.
I'll put em up on Patreon later...Catch ya next jam! 🤘😁
