- ** NOTE: If you have a 2007 G35 or 350z (engine: VQ35HR) there have been reports of an ECU update that is required to allow the idle air volume learning to work. Without the update, after cleaning the throttle you will have a high and unstable idle **
In this episode of Motorvate’s DIY Garage, we show the proper way to clean the throttle bodies on the G37 and 370Z. (or any VQ37VHR engine)
There is no need to remove the throttle body to clean it and it is safe to move the throttle plate.
All you need is a used tooth brush and a can of carb / throttle body cleaner.
That was probably one of the best most clear and detailed video I’ve seen everyone else over complicates the instructions very nice job keep up the great videos 👍🏼
Thanks! I was a technical writer/trainer for 12 years so I strive for good and quick content. (which funny enough, sure takes a long time!)
@@MotorvateDIY Thank you again I’ve done everything step by step and it was a breeze it was my first time ever working on anything on the engine and I was very nervous but it felt rewarding
OMG!!! I recently performed each step within this tutorial and "After throttle body cleaning" video and worked amazingly well. My 2014 Q60 coupe (g37 bodystyle) runs like a new car with smooth acceleration. I also, cleaned my MAF sensors. The car is fast again! Thanks so much!
Glad to hear that, and thanks for letting me know :)
I cant believe I didn't discover your channel sooner! Thank you for saving me the time and money from the stealership! Appreciate your content
Hey Ryu Q,
Thanks and I'm glad you found me :)
Watching you reconnect the hoses here helped me find the cause of my "system too lean" code. Thanks!
Well... that makes my day!!!
When is the next 370z meet? I'd love to chat with you and test my gauges. Feel free to PM me on the370
Keep up the videos man, really appreciate how in depth they are.
Hey Zeta Orionis,
Thanks! The next episode is in pre-production right now.
Thank you sir. I just bought a 370z so I will be following you every step of the way! Really enjoy how you make your videos. Straight to the point! Keep it up man
Hey Jay T,
Thanks for your kind words! I am working on the next episode right now :)
This guy deserves more subscribers ..seriously..
Thanks... The channel growth is OK, after all, not many people have the tools, space and knowledge to work on their own cars these days.
If you moved the plates incide of the throttle body you need to reprogram ECU. I learned it hard way on my wife's mazda. Removing entire throttle body, cleaning it, and not moving plates will do just fine, no reprogramming needed.
What happens if you don’t reprogram?
@@mitchellmeyers1705 In the example of a Nissan or Infiniti your idle will be unstable and high.
Eugene Tooms what plates? I haven’t done this before and don’t wanna make a mistake was it the one he moved in the video to scrub with the tooth brush?
@@Eurodriver801 Yes, that is the throttle body plate. Whenever you clean it you need to do an idle relearn
How do you reprogram? Or can you just do as this video without moving thr plates?
if your 7at shifts hard from 3 to 4, try this. mine were full of gunk on the bottom and now the shift is smoother and response is better
Hey... Thanks for this info!
Had a P0106 code, following the steps in this video helped cleared it alongside cleaning the MAF sensors. Thanks for the step-by-step!
Hey Ralu,
I'm glad that you were able to fix the issue.
The P0106 code means the intake manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor's output doesn't match the calculated pressure by the engine control unit. (ECU) This is used to verify the performance of the MAP sensor.
Now with a very dirty throttle body, a P0106 is possible and cleaning the throttle bodies and MAFs should clear it.
BUT it may come back: see this Infiniti TSB: www.infinitig37.com/TSB/ITB12-026a.pdf
I assumed you cleared the code?
In the future it is a good idea to use an inexpensive app like OBD Fusion and an ELM 327 OBD scanner and run a diagnostic report.
Here is an example from my other TH-cam channel: th-cam.com/video/T7O_vjsB2Jo/w-d-xo.html
If it does come back, please let me know.
@@MotorvateDIY thanks a ton for the additional information!
Hey @@Rahulc1987,
Anytime :)
Thanks for this. Just completed on 2014 Infiniti Q50 3.7HR - idle back to normal after throttle body cleaning.
Glad it helped
Hey! I doubt you’ll see this or remember what the RPM were idling at for the issue you had but I have the same issue with idling at 4k RPM, was that the same issue you had?
This is great! New to me 2013 EX37. Weird throttle response and stalling on warm startup yesterday. Will try this. Still learning
Excellent, a dirty throttle body can result in stalling on start up. I hope the video helped you resolve the issue.
There's a good change that your MAP sensor will throw a code: P0106 after this procedure. If so then you will also need to use the following TSB and ECM relearn reset reprogram procedure: EC12-010a ITB12-026a May 23, 2012 which has been updated recently too. You may need the consult III computer and software to do this.
Nope... That TSB updates the ECU to fix a bug.
There is no connection to a P0106 and cleaning the throttle bodies.
Great step by step demo!

Thanks!

I love comments like this... Thank you!
I have 75K on my G37.. about to chage out the silicone post MAF tubes, and K and N air filters.. do you strongly recommend this?
Wow, great videos and major thanks! Do you have videos to clean the maf?
Hey TP,
Yes I do.... shot but not editied. I should have that out soon.
I don’t have an 8mm nut driver. Seems like you could use a flathead screwdriver to loosen those clamps as well. Correct? Looks like it has the groove for it.
Yup! :)
Great video.. very detailed! Quick question.. Would it be ok to remove the throttle body completely so as to clean both sides thoroughly? I heard on another video that you do not want to unplug the control module on the throttle body because it will throw off the idle.. but would it go back to normal if we follow up with doing the 3 things you show on your "After Throttle Body Cleaning" video to update the ECU? I have a 2016 370z Nismo and will be using your videos to DIY my own vehicle.. so keep posting these great videos! Thx
Hey traec1992,
The most important part to clean on the throttle body is the EDGE of the throttle plate.
That is the part that regulates the air flow. Cleaning the front and back of the throttle plate is just for looks (and makes up happy!)
So... I don't think there is any need to remove the throttle body to clean it. You can if you want. BUT after cleaning you should do the 3 steps in the "After Throttle Body Cleaning"

I'm glad you find the videos helpful!
The next episode is in pre-production right now and there are many more episodes planned.
Thanks for your comment.
@@MotorvateDIY
Thanks for the quick response. Here's the update: I completely removed both throttle bodies and MAS. I used the correct CRC cleaner for each. Let them dry for about 30 min and reinstalled. Let me first mention that I have a few bolt on mods (Z1 CAI, Z1 HFC, AAM resonated short tails and UpRev Tune.. all installed by a professional shop out here in NC). At cold start the car idle at about 1500 rpm.. after about 20-25 sec it idle between 1100-1200 rpm.. after about a min or so it idle between 800-900 rpm.. it idled pretty steady at each interval. After a quick drive around the neighborhood (never reached more than 35 mph) the car idled at a steady 700 rpm. I also rev'd the engine to about 2500-3000 rpm a few times and felt no issues. Did I simply get lucky (not a chance.. lol) or did my UpRev tune override any issues I may have had with the ECU?
Thanks again for the greats vids.. this was a lot easier then I thought it would be!
Hey traec1992,
It is my understanding that UpRev or ECUTek don't change the idle control part of the code, so I don't think that had anything to do with it.
If your throttle body is not very dirty, the ECU can adapt to the cleaning by itself.
I think people get into trouble when they clean a throttle body for the first time at high mileage. If they don't do the 3 steps as shown in the "After throttle body cleaning" they will have idle issues.
Anyways, it looks like all worked out well for you.
It still wouldn't hurt for you to do the "After throttle body cleaning"

Could you please make a video how to lubricate suspension for our G sedans without removing wheels? 🙏🏻
These isn't anything to lubricate. 30+ years ago most cars has grease fitting on the tie rod end and ball joints that made it easy to grease.
The G/Z cars don't have any grease fittings and if there is a squeak, then you have a joint with dry grease and it needs to be replaced.
Cool vid man!!..damn P0101 was getting me once every month or so. So cleaned maf sensor, but to no avail, code came back. So after work gonna give this a shot. Car's almost 5 yrs old now so needs it anyway. Thnx again
Hey stephen gillenwaters,
A P0101 means the bank 1 (passenger side) MAF signal is not similar enough as bank 2.
Check for any possible intake leaks on the passenger side and clamps are tight.
If you have a cheap OBD scanner you can use OBD Fusion to display the actual reported air mass to the ECU. To learn more visit my other channel OBD4Everyone and watch this video:
iOS OBD Fusion's Fantastic Diagnostic Report: OBD4Everyone Ep. 8
th-cam.com/video/ewNJDpWCKe4/w-d-xo.html
With the engine fully warmed up (idle around 650 RPM) the MAF air volume should be about 2.0 g/s.
Good luck!
Well after cleaning both throttle bodies yesterday, noticed a big difference. Lots of carbon build up. thank you for the info, definitely going to replace the maf sensors as opposed to cleaning them again. Didn't think about checking for leaks but that is on the to-do list. Thnx again
Hey stephen gillenwaters,
I know what you mean... The initial throttle response is so much quicker, it makes the car feel very responsive.
Before you replace the MAF sensor, you should verify the sensor output. It would be an expensive mistake to buy a new MAF, put it in and realize, there was a loose or broken wire.
Also, the scrap yard is a great place to get a cheap MAF and most offer a 10-30 day warranty.

Moving that throttle body blade with your hand or finger not a good idea. You could damage the motor or offset the calibration of the butterfly And have to figure out how to reset or calibrate the butterfly. It's best to remove the throttle body from the car as not to interfere with the electronics If you want to clean both sides. For those wanting to do this job please look at other videos this one can cause you a problem.
I disagree... Before people knew about the "idle air volume learning" procedure, they would clean the throttle body (which changed its airflow by position characteristics)
So they thought you can't move the throttle body when you clean it. BUT if you don't move the throttle body when you clean it, you are not cleaning the CRITICAL area which is the EDGE if the throttle body.
So this became "internet knowledge" that don't move it.
Fun Fact: In the making of that video, I wasn't happy with the camera position and ended up shooting/cleaning it 7 times. To this day all is good.
You just need to do the "intake air volume learning"
Hey motov8 , have a couple questions regarding this. I have this weird issue, after a rev the rpm’s drop to like 433. Then it returns to normal idle 650. Same applies when I’m coming to a stop. almost sounds like it’s misfiring but not. I check for any leaks did not find any. I also cleaned my mafs and same issue. I check fuel railing/injectors for any leaks did not see any. Currently have 3 codes . Speed sensor, evap purge solenoid open, and fuel level A circuit low. Just curious if any of the trouble codes are the culprit or if there’s something else. I’m at a loss, not sure what it could be at this point. Thank you !
Thanks for the vid, I plan to replace my spark plugs on 13' G37x Sedan as it just hits 100k miles mark. While I am going to change the spark plugs anyways, I think I will clean the TB and MAF as well. Do you think I should disconnect the battery first to clean the TB and MAF? I am sure after cleaning I will do all three learning procedures in your other vid.
Hey Andy T,
You have great timing. Yesterday I cleaned the MAF, throttle body and replaced the plugs AND used 3 cameras to shoot it for a future episode.
There is no need to disconnect the battery. I didn't yesterday and the car fired up and idled well.
However, if you think you need to disconnect the battery, there is no harm in doing that.
Motorvate DIY That’s awesome. I’m looking forward to see your next video.
240K miles, 2012 370Z, seems to run fine. Never have done this. Maybe a little hesitation when taking off from a stop, but this can also be caused by a late release of the brake pedal. What should be noticed if this procedure is done?
Two things:
(1) smoother cruise control when changing speed.
(2) A little more responsive throttle at initial "tip in" (when you first press the accelerator pedal.)
Hmmm interesting method! I can guarantee you know more about car maintenance than I do, so I'm not challenging you at all here. However, I've seen many other sources that remove the TB and clean on the opposite side of the butterfly valve (side closest to the engine) as well as the intake manifold in which the TB is connected to.
Can you give me your reasoning as to why you chose to do it this way? Does it not make any difference? Thank you for your help.
Hey Tyler Hicks,
That is an excellent question.... and here is why:
The most important part of the throttle body is the small gap between the throttle plate and the outer throttle bore.
This small gap allows for very fine air flow control. As the throttle body collects dirt, this small gap gets filled.
The throttle body needs to open up a little more to compensate.
BUT since it is open a little more, it does not have as much fine air control. (look at the second graph: blog.opticontrols.com/archives/727)
If you don't open the throttle body to clean it, you really aren't cleaning the most important part.
Carbon build up on the front and back of the throttle plate, or in the bore don't change the operation very much.
Motorvate DIY Wrong. It most certainly does make a significant difference. To thoroughly cleaning both sides of the TB's and the plenum bore, itis very much ideal and very important. As well as cleaning the M.A.S as well.
Very poor video, and not well thought out, this one gets a F.
Hey Joe Jones,
The purpose of the throttle body is air regulation. Carbon on the back or front of the throttle plate or in the plastic plenum don't change how well it can control the air flow.
Do we feel better with everything clean? Yes we do, but it really is not required.
Is there any harm in cleaning everything? Nope.
@@joejones6968 Bullshit. He's right and did it right. F my ass
Motorvate DIY u told the way to clean but u should have also told it requires to be lean otherwise it won’t work properly
Thanks for sharing. Remove battery cable to do this job right?
You can if you want, but I never have as there is no need.
Thanks for this very informative video. I'm following the instructions right now and everything makes sense, but I am having a lot of difficulty unlocking the squeeze clamp. The two clips that you're supposed to squeeze with pliers are facing down and completely inaccessible. I also wasn't able to simply rotate the clamp as you did in the video, as it was extremely snug on the hose. Do you have any tips for this?
If the clamp hasn't been moved in a while (or never!) they can be difficult to rotate as they get stuck/attached to the rubber.
You could try spraying a little silicon spray (won't hurt the rubber) on the clamp and try to move it again... other than that, my best advice is to keep trying. Being persistent is an important DIYer skill. Good luck!
@@MotorvateDIY Thanks again for your tips. I ended up buying a hose clamp plier which did the trick. Was able to get to the throttle body and clean it. I also followed the relearning procedures (accelerator released position, throttle valve closed position, and idle air).
I just find it interesting that right after cleaning the throttle body and before I did the relearning procedure, while I did notice an initial (very slight) rough start, the RPMs were pretty much normal, both on accelerating and idle. After the relearning, again no noticeable difference in how the engine revs. So this kind of just makes me not confident that I cleaned the throttle body properly (even though it was definitely dirty and I cleaned the edges) or perhaps I didn't do the relearning properly (for instance when doing the throttle valve closed position relearn, I didn't hear the mechanical clicking sound).
Just wondering if there's a surer way to know that this procedure was done satisfactorily? I'm not an expert on judging how the engine revs, but I assume if it revs to 2000-3000 in P, comes down to 650 without any stops or resurgence along the way, then that's normal?
Cleaning the throttle bodies and doing the idle air volume learning will give you a more stable idle, with no RPM drops/stumble below about 600 RPM.
AND the initial throttle response should be a little quicker.
If your idle is stable and around 650 RPM, then everything is good :)
Looks like the butterfly valve itself is modular and can be removed with two screws. Is this a correct assumption? And also is any loctite involved in putting them back on? Have a 12 G37xS with 150 000 on it and it runs like new. Nothing but full synthetic oil changes has been done to the car since I bought it with 130000 on the odo.
Hey cardinaldriver,
Yes... but each throttle body has 4 screws and can be removed easily. There is not loctite and many have reused the rubber o-ring with out any issues.
I plan on changing my spark plugs soon. Since I’m going to remove the throttle body’s, should I take advantage and just clean both sides?
I would (and did!). If you Nissan/Infiniti has the 3.5 litre v6 and is a 2007, don't clean the throttle body. There is a bug in the ECU and it prevents the idle air volume procedure from running to completion and you are left with a high and unstable idle.
@@MotorvateDIY I have 2013 G37 so I should be fine. Definitely going to use your videos when I do the idle relearn 👌🏼
Okay so I’m replacing the spark plugs on my 370 and want to go head and clean the throttle body’s since I’m taking them off anyways. after reading these comments I’m a little confused now. After cleaning it I need to do all the 3 steps in your other video right? Is there anything I shouldn’t do? Car is tuned and don’t want to mess up the idle. Thankyou
It is best to do all three, but some have done just the idle air volume learning and all was good.
You don't need to disconnect the battery and you can move the throttle plate while cleaning. Then do the three steps and all should be good!
Thanx for this
Cleaned it today was quite dirty
Most welcome 😊
I have a 15 Infiniti q50 3.7 that’s showing a P1239 code. Sometimes I lose ALL power while driving at freeway speeds, but as soon as I restart it it’s back to running like normal. This has happened a handful of times and infrequently, and am wondering if cleaning the throttle body could resolve this problem
I don't think it will.
The P1239 code is defined as: "the throttle position sensor (bank 2) circuit range/ performance" This can be caused by a worn throttle body sensor, bad connection, broken wire or other items.
You can do it this way, but you might have a 50/50% chance you might have idle problems after your finished. And have to go through the idle and throttle re-learn process. I usually just unbolt the throttle body and clean it that way and barely move or touch the plates the throttle cleaner seems to get the gunk off pretty well by itself & the hard carbon deposits i just use a damp rag with cleaner.
Hey Eks ls,
The most important part of the throttle body to clean is the EDGE of the plate.
This is the part that controls the airflow into the engine.
Due to the crank case ventilation system (PCV) feeding into the intake BEFORE the throttle bodies, a small amount of carbon will slowly build up on the small gap between the edge of the throttle plate and the throttle bore.
Over time the ECU (engine control unit) will adjust slightly open the throttle body to compensate for the dirt build up.
When you clean the throttle bodies, the dirt is removed from the small gap between the edge of the throttle plate and the bore of the throttle body. This creates a larger gap, allowing more air into the engine, which increases the idle. Sometimes if the idle it too high, the ECU tries to lower it, the revs drop too low, and then the ECU increases the revs. This causes the idle to rev up and down.
So.... We have an ECU that knows the air flow of the idle when the throttle bodies were dirty BUT they are now clean and the air flow is different!
The Solution:
Three specific procedures need to be done, to teach the ECU the new airflow of the CLEAN throttle bodies:
• Pedal Released Position Learning
• Throttle Valve Closed Position Learning
• Idle Air Volume Learning
These are all shown in this video:
th-cam.com/video/HIiaF0VaTlQ/w-d-xo.html
TIP: If your throttle bodies are VERY dirty you may have trouble getting the Idle Air Volume Learning to run or complete. If that happens follow the steps in this TSB from Nissan/Infiniti: www.infinitig37.com/TSB/ITB11-060.pdf
For the 2007 VQ35HR, an ECU update may be required for the Idle Air Volume Learning to run to completion.
@@MotorvateDIY thanks for the info cause i fucked this up the first time I did this hahaha moved the the throttle plates and my idle got messed up when i started my vehichle it would rise to 3k then drop to 500 and go up and down like I had a vaccum leak. And doing all that relearn process was so tideous it took me like 9 tries to get my car idling normal again. But its idling & driving normal now and i just did a PCV valve delete to a catch can with a breather throttle bodies stay way cleaner now just your noramal outside dirt & grime no carbon deposits.
Hey Eks ls,
Yes it can be difficult to get the idle air volume to run.
However, if you have a bluetooth OBD scanner and a Android device you can use a free app NDSIII and do it with the push of a button:
th-cam.com/video/OiB9txECWB0/w-d-xo.html
I wonder what the long term effects are when a PCV delete is done...
Instead of the blow-by gassed being constantly be sucked out of the crankcase, they are only "pushed out" under high engine load and vented to the atmosphere.
Anyways, I'm glad you got your proper idle back :)
I have a 2010 g37x, and im planning on doing this job this weekend. Do you have to worry about spraying into the throttle body if its still attached to the intake manifold? and when scrubbing, do you have to worry about the carbon buildup going inside of the intake manifold?
Hey Ryan Jermain,
There is nothing to worry about when spraying cleaner into the throttle body as it won't damage anything.
The carbon build up inside the intake has no impact on performance or emissions, so if you clean it, it will just make you feel better. :)
The most important part to clean is the outer edge of the throttle plate and the inside bore of the throttle body.
After cleaning, made sure to do the three steps in this video:
After Throttle Body Cleaning: MotorvateDIY Ep27

@@MotorvateDIY Just an update, did my throttle bodys and WOW they were dirty. Did all the relearns as you instructed and it all went smoothly. Thank u so much.
Hey Ryan Jermain,

I'm always happy to my videos are helpful :)
Hello I have a 2008 Infiniti G35S 6mt (VQ35HR) and I have tried the process multiple times while ensuring all the steps and procedures are followed. I notice you said the VQ35HR engines have a bug with the ECU and doing the idle relearn. Should I try to contact the local Infiniti dealership to get it reprogrammed or just buy some use throttle bodies and install them?
The ECU bug only applies to the 2007 models.
It can be tricky to get the idle air volume learning to run to completion, as the timing needs to be VERY accurate and all the preconditions need to be met. One subscriber mentioned that it took him about 20 times before he got it to work.
You can also use a free Android app and a Bluetooth OBD scanner:
th-cam.com/video/OiB9txECWB0/w-d-xo.html
@@MotorvateDIY Thank you so much sir, I went ahead and disconnected the battery overnight and reconnected it. Still idled at 800-900 rpm, however once I let it get warm enough I did 2-3 revs and the RPMs seemed to have drop to the 600-700 range
Thanks for the happy update :)
pushing open the butterfly manually won’t mess up the throttle body or anything right?
No. BUT with a good cleaning, you do need to do an "intake air volume learning" so the ECU can re-learn the air flow properties of the freshly cleaned throttle body.
I’ve seen other videos people saying not to open the throttle bodies manually if it’s an electronic throttle body. Is this true? Also dio you think taking the throttle body off to better clean the inside is necessary?
Good questions!
In the making of this video, I struggled to get a good camera angle and ended up cleaning /opening/closing the throttle body 5 or 6 times. It is OK to open the throttle body to clean it.
I suspect that in the past after folks cleaned the throttle body, they didn't know to do the idle air volume learning and had idle problems.
If you want to remove the throttle body to clean it, go right ahead.
The most important part to clean is the EDGE of the throttle plate. This is the part the controls air flow.
Cleaning off the carbon in other areas is only to make us feel good that it is clean.
Sooooo, clean it any way you want, just make sure to do the idle air volume learning. :)
What do you think about B12 Chemtool Throttle Body cleaner ??
I don't know anything about it, but if it is a throttle body cleaner, I'm sure it would work well :)
All the module and sensors on the Nissans and Infiniti's including the 3.7 engine are very sensitive. How do you know if you didn't damage the coating on the throttle bodies?
Every module in ANY car is sensitive to having the proper/required voltage.
The micro-controllers don't function as expected at under-voltage conditions.
As for the "coating" on the G37 throttle body, it doesn't have one and even if it did, a throttle body cleaner wouldn't damage it.
@@MotorvateDIY The 370 BTW doesn't have a MAP sensor although G37S coupes do. Probably the sedans do too. A lot of people with these cars think that by changing the airboxes to CAI they get better performance. That depends on 3 things: 1. The quality of the air filters; 2. The amount of actual air going in; and 3. The amount of cool air vs heat soak. If you don't get enough air you will end up chocking the engine, running to rich, getting poor gas mileage and your ECU will start throwing codes if it happens too often and that's when the SES light goes on in your dash.
The 2010 - 2020 370 do have a MAP sensor, part number 22365-EY00C.
The 2009 370 does not.
The idea of "doesn't get enough air, and runs rich" is old school / carb thinking.
The 370/G37 engines use a wide band air/fuel ratio sensor, and will adjust the fuel mixture to fit the actual air flow. Carbs couldn't do that, and would run rich.
Hi , i have a 2009 370z AT , before cleaning my throttle bodies , do i need to disconnect the battery or can i leave it connect ? after cleaning , i must do the "relearn" procedure for throttle and idle ? thanks for your answer.
Hey Flo,
There is a lot of confusion and mis-information on the internet about cleaning the throttle bodies. There is no need to disconnect the battery.
Follow the steps in the video to clean it and then do the three steps as shown in the "After Throttle Body Cleaning"
th-cam.com/video/HIiaF0VaTlQ/w-d-xo.html
Here is why you need to do the three steps: After the throttle body is cleaned, you have removed carbon build up and this changes the airflow through the throttle body. So, we need to "teach" the ECU the airflow of the cleaned throttle body.
Good luck!
I heard it’s a terrible idea opening throttle by hand can really damage the motor & change the position since the pedal position sends certain voltage depending on position of pedal that determines how much the throttle should open
Anyone who says that doesn't understand or know what is actually happening.
They would clean the throttle body without doing the "idle air volume learning" and then have problems like a high idle.
BUT if you clean the throttle body and then do the idle "idle air volume learning" you will have a stable idle and improved low RPM throttle response.
Since we are moving the butterfly in the throttle body do we have to disconnect the battery ?
I never have, all I do is to make sure I move it slowly.
In the making of this video, I ended up cleaning the throttle body about 5 times to get the right camera angles. No issues!
Just make sure to do the "After Throttle Body Cleaning" (aka intake idle air volume learning)
On the Nissan/infiniti factory service manuals every throttle body clean the ECM needs to me reprogramed, or else the idle with be out of parameters
Hey Rick Moises,
I agree... that's why you need to do this after cleaning the throttle body on a Nissan/Infiniti:
th-cam.com/video/HIiaF0VaTlQ/w-d-xo.html
I keep hearing the moving the butterfly valve will get damaged if we move them with the car off? Is that true or am I good to clean it as you have shown in this video? Thanks!
Many folks on the G/Z forums say that, but that has not been my experience.
In the making of this video, I cleaned the throttle bodies 5-6 times and moved them a lot.
I think this got started when people didn't know that an idle air volume learning was needed to be done after they were cleaned. ALSO the ECU bug in the 2007 G/Z didn't help. (the idle air volume learning will never complete)
@@MotorvateDIY Thanks for the feedback. I had no issues by following your steps and my pesky P0106 code is gone! Thank you.
@@MotorvateDIYhey so would getting a new ECU then performing the idle relearn would maybe fix the problem?on a 2007 hr 350z
Technically, there is nothing wrong with the ECU, it just need to be updated. The easiest option may be to see if the local dealer or Nissan specialist can update it to the current version.
I have vibrations from auto g37. at 2000rpm. And I don't know what to do. I decided plugs and to replace the engine mounts with new original ones. I don't know how to solve it. Do you have an idea? I'm already afraid that the engine has failed
I have very little experience with the 7 speed autos used on the G37, so I don't know how much help I can be.
You might want to post your issue on www.reddit.com/r/G37/ or myg37.com
They should be able to give you some direction and suggestions.
Good luck!
Did you have to do idle relearn?
Yes: th-cam.com/video/HIiaF0VaTlQ/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared
What does cleaning your throttle body really do? I’m curious. Im starting to educate myself about cars
Hey Brown Saint,
It allows very precise control of air flow.
The throttle uses a "butterfly valve" and the ratio of position and flow is not linear. (1:1)
As it starts to open, it has very fine control of the air flow. This is required as most cars in the last 10-15 years don't have a dedicated idle control valve.
However, after opening 5-10% the change in air flow is quite large and that results in difficulty in accurately controlling the air flow.
As the throttle body get dirty, the engine control unit (ECU) must slightly open up the throttle to get the same air flow.
The more open the throttle is, the less precise control it has on the air flow and weird things starts to happen with the idle.
That was an excellent question and I wish you luck on learning more about cars.
Thank you so much @@MotorvateDIY that was very helpful🙏🏽
Guud sheeit my guy!!!! REALLY!!!
Thanks! I aim to please :)
I've heard pushing the throttle valve by hand can screw up your idle, isn't that the case?
Hey Mikolaj,
For a Nissan or Infiniti with electronic throttle (~2003+) pushing on the throttle plate to open it up does not screw up the idle.
** HOWEVER **
Cleaning the throttle body without doing an "idle air volume learning" will. As the dirt builds up on the throttle plate the air flow at idle changes and the ECU does a small adjustment to compensate.
After cleaning, the required range of adjustment is too much and the ECU can't close the throttle enough to get a proper idle.
The "idle air volume learning" process allows the ECU to learn the new air flow characteristics.
Keep in mind, theses engine do not have a separate idle control circuit, only the throttle body - so it need learn the air flow when at idle.
If you have a cheap Bluetooth OBD scanner and an Android device you can use this free app to do the idle air volume learning:

Thanks for the great question!
No throttle body cleaner? I thought you weren’t supposed to force open the throttle body if it was electronic. Or is this not electronic?
Hey boostedmaniac,
The throttle body cleaner was sprayed off camera onto the tooth brush. I didn't want any throttle body cleaner droplets eating my lens. - I will try to add a note about that. Thanks for pointing that out.
That may be true for some engines, but it isn't true on this one. (VQ37VHR)
@@MotorvateDIY I thought I read on the myg37 forum that some people were causing damage after forcing the throttle body open.

Good to hear!
You should feel a little sharper initial throttle response and the cruise control speed up/down should operate a little smoother.
Did you need to do the idle re-learn process since you moved the butterfly valve? Did you disconnect the battery?
No need to disconnect battery and yes, I did the "idle air volume learning" as shown in the follow up video:
th-cam.com/video/HIiaF0VaTlQ/w-d-xo.html
@@MotorvateDIY Ok, thanks. One quick question for you, if you happen to know, when replacing a crankshaft position sensor on a 2003 350Z, do I need to disconnect the battery? Thanks again!!
No need to disconnect the battery when replacing the CPS.
Make sure to compare the old and new sensor length from the tip to the underside of the mounting tab. They should be the same, which means the flywheel to tooth gap is the same and in spec.

@@MotorvateDIY Thank you so much!!!
Sir, when I clean the throttle body on our G37s, is it better that I warm up the engine before removing the rubber parts (air intakes) at cold temperatures (-5 celsius degree) to make them flexible? Rubber air intake parts might be flexible and easier when I remove them?..
There is no harm in doing that, as it will make it easier to get them off.
Be careful removing the smaller PCV plastic connectors, they always seem to be tough to get off.
Good luck!
@@MotorvateDIY Thank you for the reply! Is it totally safe to touch butterflies without disconnecting negative battery terminal even on 08 g35 sedans? (Yes i got ECU updated!)
I think it is ok. In the making of this video I moved the throttle plates many, many times without issue.
@@MotorvateDIY i moved the butterflies while cleaning and had no issue AT ALL. This video helps and proves a lot. thank you sir. You saved my $ a lot instead of spending $ at shops for cleaning throttle bodies.

When do you have to replace the rubber gasket for Throttle body?
From what I have seen they last a long time... so I guess they should be replaced when they allow air into the intake.
What should I do if the throttle body won’t open? Do I need the battery connected?
With the car off, you should be able to gently push open the throttle as shown in the video. It does take a little force, just be smooth and gentle.
Thorough video! Awesome!
Hey Jason LeBlanc,
Thanks for your kind words :)
Many videos before said you are not supposed to touch the butterfly valve... This is the complete opposit, i'm confused....
In the making of this video, the throttle bodies were moved many times as I was trying to get the best camera angle. I didn't have any issues... BUT I did the Idle Air Volume Learning.
If you don't move the throttle body to clean the edge of the throttle plate, you are not cleaning the area that controls the air flow. Google butterfly valve.
I suspect in the beginning, the throttle plate was cleaned without moving it and it didn't cause any issues as the air flow characteristics were not changed, since the edge of the throttle plate were not cleaned.
The throttle plate edge is the most important part to clean.
If you clean the throttle body correctly and remove the carbon build up on the edge, yo must do the "intake idle air volume learning as you have changed the idle air flow.
You will also notice the absolute throttle position is decreased since your trained the ECU on the new idle air flow characteristics. This shows the "idle air volume learning" has worked.
As always, do what you feel is correct.
On my G37, I can move the throttle body with the battery connected to clean it all day and as long as I do the "idle volume leaning" all is good.
Sir, can you clean throttle body with brake part cleaner?
I don't know... I have always used TB cleaner. You could try it and see it it works.
How are you sir? Well, i bought my car for n it has 80 miles and now has 170 miles on it. I never clean the TB. I kept searching for a guide video and they are many of them! However, you seem very confident and sure about what you are doing. Im thinking to follow your video but i heard ppl say “shouldn’t open that by hand”. I have g35 hr which is almost the same g37. What do you think?
Thank you,
Hey ali alghanim,
Very good question!
If you have a 2007 HR there is an issue with the ECU after cleaning the throttle bodies and it won't complete the Idle air volume learning, which results in a high idle. If you have a 2007, I wouldn't do anything -or- you can contact Eugene Turkov at www.yelp.com/biz/enthusiast-auto-care-concord and he can load the 2008 ECU software on your 2007 ECU.
It is my understanding the 2008 HRs don't have this issue.
So if you don't have any issues, you may want to leave it :)
hey, is it okay to be super liberal with the throttle body cleaner? I'm talking about spraying while brushing. Will the engine be okay with getting that stuff in there?
Hey leinad20002,
Yes, that should be fine. Remember to clean the EDGE of the throttle plate.
After cleaning, make sure to do this:

Old video but you should NEVER move the TB plate by hand, reason is you'll mess up the electrical connection with the electronic motor, you got lucky and got away with that. Many had their TB hit the dust messing around with the plate.
Correct way is to disconnect TB off the car, clean it in and out with tb cleaner, PUT NEW gasket and reinstall.

Hey Atif Ashraf,
Excellent question... and the answer is: NOPE!
That is why after cleaning the throttle body, it is important to do the "idle air volume learning" as shown here: th-cam.com/video/HIiaF0VaTlQ/w-d-xo.html
This procedure allows the engine control unit (ECU) to learn how much air the engine uses at the proper idle.

If you want to troubleshoot this yourself, you will need an OBD app (OBDFusion is my current favourite) and a wireless OBD scanner.
I would look at your fuel trims to see where they are. Add the short term to the long term fuel trims.... They should be between -10% to +10% for a normal engine.
You should also have a look at the post cat O2 sensor voltage.

I am experiencing an idle issue where if the vehicle is stopped momentarily and in neutral (6mt) the idle rpm drops to about 400rpm and then surges back to normal. Do you think it’s dirty throttle bodies even though the car only has 70,000km?
Hey Dougie LaForce,
It sounds like it... When dirt builds up in the throttle plate it can't make small adjustments to the air flow to keep the idle steady.
Keep in mind, after cleaning the throttle body some vehicles need an extra step or two to "teach it" the new air flow of a clean throttle body.
What car is this on?
@@MotorvateDIY Vehicle is a 2008 Infiniti G37s. I followed the steps in all your videos yesterday and did the cleaning and learning procedures. Thank you very much for the information.

Hey chosenwon4444,
Good question!
It won't hurt anything and should help collect some of the oil vapour that comes from the PCV system,
resulting in a cleaner throttle body.
BUT, catch cans cost much more than the cost of cleaning your throttle body every 50,000 - 70,000 miles.
I have clean g37 throttle body with maf sensor cleaning jus fine
Hey Elvrick Gibbs,
Great... It is nice when things work like you expect.
I’ve always heard you’re not supposed to touch the plate on the throttle body. Is that a lie ??
For the Nissan/Infiniti 3.7 litre V6 I can tell you for a fact you can. I have done it multiple times. In the filming of this episode I ended up cleaning the throttle body 5 times in two days. AND all was well.
Many people are not aware that on most drive by wire (electronic throttle) there is a additional procedure that need to be done, so the ECU can lean the new air flow characteristics of a clean throttle body.
For Nissan/Infiniti that is the "Idle air volume learning"
From episode 27: th-cam.com/video/HIiaF0VaTlQ/w-d-xo.html
Would you do this to spray Seafoam into the intake for cleaning? I can't figure out how to rev the engine and spray the spray during the daytime by myself so no one gets alarmed by the plumes of smoke that are supposed to come out.
Hey P Hanley,
I have used Seafoam for over 30 years. It works really well for engines with carburettors - just pour a little in the carb and you are good to go.
However, with fuel injected engines, I don' t think there is any benefit. Generally they run MUCH cleaner and have a lot less carbon build up.
If your throttle body is dirty, it is best to clean it.
(***Unless you have a 2007 G35 / 350Z then don't!!*** there is a software bug and your idle will be high and unstable)
Seafoam alone won't do a very good job of cleaning the edges of the throttle plate.
Also Seafoam can confuse the O2 sensors and set a code that you will need to clear.
So get your toothbrush and get to work :)
@@MotorvateDIY THanks for your reply. I was going to spray it in the G37 intakes. Should I just spray into one side of the intake on the VQ37 or remove the boot from each side and go half and half? Last, how does one rev the engine while in the engine bay?
Hey P Hanley,
On the G37 there is no easy way to add Seafoam to the intake system. Some use the brake booster, but then the seafoam doesn't pass through the throttle bodies.
In my opinion, don't use seafoam at all.

Why does this need to be done?, Is it something these cars have an issue with?
The throttle bodies get carbon build up due to how the positive crankcase Ventilation (PCV) works: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crankcase_ventilation_system
I followed steps here and did the relearn procedures after and now my g37 feels very sluggish. did a 0-60 test and took about 6.5 seconds. no cel. any ideas anybody?
Did you do the idle air volume learning?
@@MotorvateDIY yup I did all 3 procedures from the next episode. I think they worked bc right after I cleaned it it had a very high idle. Now it idles perfectly and has no problems revving up. Do u need to disconnect the battery
No... With the ignition off, the ECU and throttle body do not have power.
Some seem to think you must disconnect the battery not so you don't have high idle problems after cleaning... but that is not correct.
After you clean the throttle body, you MUST do an "idle air volume learning" which sets the correct idle RPM.
So I have a 2007 g35x and disconnected the cable on my throttle body when I cleaned it what do I do now that u say it you have to update it how do I do that plz get back ASAP thanks!!

Hey Jonah urban,
Sorry, I didn't see that!
Hey Jonah urban,
What happens when you start the car? Does it idle OK?
As for the P0300 and P0021 codes, I would check your oil pressure. The VQ35/37 can leak oil internally and it lowers the oil pressure. Here is an episode we did:
Oil Pressure Check: G37/370z - Motorvate's DIY Garage Ep. 18
th-cam.com/video/-Io6ryxWFtQ/w-d-xo.html
WARNING: Do not do this for a 350z HR. For a 370z they might have changed it up. I unplugged the battery first, then I disconnected the throttle body sensors before disconnecting the throttle body to clean. I moved the butterfly valves to clean with CRC just like he did in this video. However, once I plugged everything back, my idle would fluctuate between 1000-2000 rpm. This is called the dreaded idle surge. You can not reprogram the car for the idle volume reset, since it is always surging. Took it to the dealer and they can not reprogram the car due to the surge as well. Best bet is to buy used OEM throttle bodies, or buy a whole new ECU to solve your problem due to the fact that moving the butterfly will short or fry your sensor in the throttle body or ECU.
Hey Bruce,
Sorry to hear that you are having this trouble. I am going to do my best to help!
Why did you disconnect the battery and remove the throttle body connectors?
The video doesn't mention that... and by doing that you erase the ECU (long term fuel trim and others)
which may of made your situation worse by changing 2 things to the car: a clean TB and a reset ECU.
It would be VERY difficult to damage the throttle bodies, since they are very simple devices: just a DC motor, a few gears and a variable resistor. Here is what it looks inside the your actual throttle body:
th-cam.com/video/HLQiu1kZ354/w-d-xo.html
The VQ35HR and the VQ37VHR use the exact same throttle bodies, so I don't think the issue is specific to the throttle body.... now the ECU programming might be different.
Questions:
• How does the car drive when going 30-50 mph?
• Does your idle still surge when the engine is fully warmed up?
• Is the idle any different after driving it for a few days?
• Is there a check engine light on?
• What is the battery voltage at idle? (needs to be > 12.9 volts)
Suggestions:
• With the car off, remove and reconnect each throttle body connector (to ensure a good connection)
• Reset the ECU:
(from: www.titantalk.com/forums/titan-faq-how-area/25118-how-ecu-reset-throttle-accelerator-position-learning.html)
Timing is extremely critical. If it is NOT DONE within the specify time, the ECU will not reset and the Check Engine Light (CEL) will continue to remain ON. A stop watch or an analog clock with a second’s needle will be useful.
Operations Procedures
1. Confirm that accelerator pedal is fully released, turn ignition switch “ON” and wait 3 seconds.
2. Repeat the following steps (2a and 2b) procedures quickly five times within 5 seconds.
2a. Fully depress the accelerator pedal (HARD).
2b. Fully release the accelerator pedal.
3. Wait 7 seconds, fully depress the accelerator pedal and keep it for approx. 10 seconds until the CEL starts blinking.
4. Fully release the accelerator pedal (while the CEL is still blinking)
5. Wait about 10 second.
6. Fully depress the accelerator pedal and keep it for more than 10 seconds.
7. Fully release the accelerator pedal (The CEL light will continue to blink).
8. Turn ignition switch to “OFF” position and now you can start the car.
By performing this procedure, ECM memory is erased and the following diagnostic information is erased as well.
• Diagnostic trouble codes
• 1st trip diagnostic trouble codes
• Freeze frame data
• 1st trip freeze frame data
• System readiness test (SRT) codes
• Test values
• Long Term Fuel trim

** MAKE SURE THAT ALL PRECONDITIONS ARE MET OR THE IDLE AIR VOLUME WON'T COMPLETE **
There was one mention that the idle air volume won't complete if the coolant temp is more than 90C / 194F, so that may be something to try.
If you have a bluetooth OBD scanner and a Android phone/tablet you can use this free app for the
idle air volume learning: th-cam.com/video/OiB9txECWB0/w-d-xo.html
Good luck and I look forward to your response. :)
I found this old technical service bulletin (TSB) alflash.com.ua/for/NTB05-067.pdf
that mention to disconnect 1-2 fuel injectors to lower the idle so the idle air volume learning can complete.
On the VQ35HR / VQ37VHR I don't think anyone's hand can fit between the intake manifold to unplug the fuel injector. BUT...
This document (prostream.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/Nissan-IAVL1.pdf) on page 4 mentions to loosen the clamp by the throttle body and slighly open a gap, allowing un-metered air to enter the engine.. This should slow down the engine idle so the idle air volume procedure can complete.
Addition ideas to lower your idle so the idle air volume can complete:
(from: productforum.autorepairdata.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4744)
• Remove the air filter and use your hand to party block the air going into the engine
• Step on the brake and put the car in drive
Once the idle air volume has completed, repeat it again with the engine back to normal and in Park.
Interesting option on Post 16:
I figured before I replace the throttle body , I figure WTF do I have to loose, so I tell assistant to turn the key on , engine off, and to depress accelerator pedal WOT to the floor and throttle plate opens . Release the pedal, and throttle plate closes but it's still kinda open a bit, so I hold the throttle actuator plate completely closed and ask assistant to cycle the key off and then on a couple times while I'm holding the throttle plate completely shut when he turns the ignition key off against the actuator pressure as it automatically tries to crack the throttle open and closed after the key is turned off. I put the air duct back on and start engine and engine idle is good. Damn it worked, I wouldn't recommend doing what I did except as a frustrated last resort measure before sending a turd to the dealer and letting them throw a throttle actuator and ECM on it.
I'm hoping something here will work for you :)
@@MotorvateDIY Love to see the detailed response in helping out your community!
I might be wayyy to late lol, but yeah that doesn’t make sense to why your throttle body would get damaged. You are definitely just overthinking it.
Does it makes power ?
Hey SillyChillie,
Nope, but it does give you much better throttle response :)
Thank you!
I hope it helped :)
Is this an ASMR ?? cause it feels good
Hey S,
To be honest, I had to google "ASMR" as I had no idea what you are asking.
So no, it is not a "autonomous sensory meridian response" video.
Just me trying to help others.
I'm glad you enjoyed it :)
This dude scrubs like a princess
Ok then... call me "Princess Scrubber" :)
Its o.k to open the butterfly when you clean it
Hey Joseph Passero,
Sorry, but don't know if what you are saying is a question or statement...
It is OK to move the butterfly valve to clean it. Just make sure to do the released pedal learning, throttle valve closed position learning and the idle volume air learning: th-cam.com/video/HIiaF0VaTlQ/w-d-xo.html
There really needs to be a disclaimer on this video!!!!!!!!!!!!!. Manually moving the throttle body on these vehicles commonly results in damage to the throttle body motor. They are very delicate. I dont mean to be overly dramatic but even my local Infiniti dealer warned be about this.
im sure you can have sum1 sit in the car with car on not started put in drive butterfly should open then you can clean it like that.
Maybe.... with the drive by wire systems on the G37 & 370z, when the ignition is on, with the engine not running, the ECU is smart enough to know, if the engine isn't running, it won't open the throttle.
@@MotorvateDIY true that being said would it be any different to 35hr as i have 06 350gt sedan
I don't have access to a HR to test, so I really don't know. Maybe you could tell me?
arent you suppose to unscrew the bolts and disconnect the throttle body so you can also the the other side which is the dirtiest ?
Hey Akira Maruyamam,
There is no need... Slowly push open the butterfly valve and use a toothbrush to scrub and clean both sides.
-or- if you want to remove it, you can.
The most important part to clean is the outside edge, as that is the part that controls air flow.
@@MotorvateDIY oh I see thanks a lot for the info going to do mine soon just saw another youtuber remover it so was wondering why
Hey Akira Maruyamam,
There are different ways to do the same thing, and get the same result.
I show the way I like :)
Nice vid
Hey DoomFinger511,
Thank you!
It was difficult getting the proper camera angles as the throttle body is mounted very low. BUT after 4 tries I got it :)
@@MotorvateDIY I just bought a 2012 g37xS with 49k miles last week. I subscribed to your channel. I know I'm going to need them at some point. Plan to use your advice and check the computer to see if I need a throttle body cleaning. Seriously your vid angles and explanations are great!
Hey DoomFinger511,
Nice purchase!

Thanks for subbing and your kind words :)
wow I never thought of using a toothbrush
Hey Nazje Chatman,
It is a great tool to use for cleaning throttle bodies, dust around buttons and dust in vents. Have fun cleaning!
P1233 P2133 P0228 I received all these codes after tb coolant delete I need help
All codes point to the bank 2 (driver's side) throttle body. Check for any broken or damaged wires... Also unplug the throttle body connector it and check for any bent pins and plug it back in firmly.
Makes all the difference with a throttle re learn after.
Well this is obviously not an electronic throttle body because you NEVER touch or move the butterfly valve. If this is an electronic TB you just got very unheard of lucky if you TB is not damaged.
The best way is to have someone in the car that switches the accessory mode on and off as you spray the cleaner... DON"T START THE CAR! This will open and close the butterfly valve correctly with out damage to the computer /TB I have always understood you never manually move the butterfly valve on any TB that is electronic
This is on an Infiniti G37 that has a VQ37VHR which does have an electronic throttle. (look it up)
On that engine you can move the throttle to clean it. In fact, in the shooting of this video I had to clean/move the throttle body 5 times to get the proper camera angle.
What is true on one engine may or may not be true on another.
New sub thanks
Hey Freddy Villalba,
Thank you for subbing!
The next episode is under development where I compare different drop-in air filters and measure how efficient they are. (pressure drop across the air filter using an medical/industrial high resolution pressure sensor mounted in the air box)
Can you move that throttle plate manually on a electronic throttle body without ignition on and someone to press the gas
I don't think so 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
No need to do a relearn?
It is recommended and I have an episode right here for Nissan/Infiniti:
