You Need to "Brake" Your Swing

  • What does it mean to put the Brakes on your swing? This is something that golf instructors rarely talk about because they just don't understand that the golf swing is more than just movement. The golf swing is stabilized movement.
    This means that you can't move the speed producing parts of the swing if your lower body isn't able to provide support. This means that if your lower body isn't supported, you can not move your arms fast. This just makes sense. It's been said that you can't shoot a cannon from a canoe. Similarly, you can't hit a golf ball standing on ice. How can you expect to swing fast if you aren't stable?
    In this video, I discuss the mechanics of the body's stabilizers and support systems and how, starting from the ground up, you can stabilize your body in an ideal position - without even trying.
    About the Single Plane Swing
    Starting at address on two planes where the arms hang straight down at address, the Conventional golf swing is complicated. Because the arms are hanging straight down, a conventional golfer must lift the body into impact creating stress on the back.
    This upward movement to accommodate the two planes is unnecessary.
    The Single Plane Golf swing simplifies the golf swing by eliminating the need for the upward movement by starting and impacting on the same plane.

    Thank you so much for this video. After so many years of frustrations and embarrassing moments (30 yr retired Marine) where your friends don’t let you forget those bad shots, I finally found a system and great coach to learn from. I started watching your videos just over a month ago and fortunately here in Northern Ca., we are able to practice outdoors and play for most of the year watching your videos has taken at least five strokes off my game. I continue to follow all your previous videos and look forward to some more great ones.

    Yes. Keeping the right foot down until just past impact is so good for the swing, I cannot stress it enough. I teach this key element to my students as well. Especially good for anyone who suffers from early hip extension. Impossible to do with the right foot down. Works with all swings too, not just single plane swing. I learned this from studying Moe's swing. It is one of the main keys to being a straight hitter of the golf ball.

    This is great to see. I teach hitting for baseball and I’m so big on back foot sideways and not rotating up on the toe to hit. I tell all my students it’s about a stable lower half so the upper half has something to rotate against. They don’t believe it because they have been taught for so long to ‘spin the hips’ instead of firm up the lower half. We call it ‘blocking’ in the baseball world instead of ‘stopping’. I’m glad I stumbled on your videos. I’ve been a single plane golfer for years but didn’t really know enough to make it work well. So much of what you speak about is relatable to hitting a baseball. Same nuance, different ball👍🏼👍🏼 Can’t wait to watch the rest of your videos ‼️

    A very helpful video to come across as an inconsistent golfer looking to experience more enjoyment by following the single plane swing technique. I had the pleasure of watching fellow Canadian, Moe Norman many years ago when he did an evening clinic in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. To watch Mr. Norman on video is one thing, but to witness his golf skill genius in person was a true head shaker.

    Great stuff as always, Todd. Simplistic explanations of difficult biomechanics. You have a gift for that. Much appreciated.
    I "discovered" your videos this past fall, and decided to go All In to learn the SPS. Most frustrating thing for me so far is training/convincing my body to "unlearn" 38 years of my unique, conventional golf swing. The body wants to "default" to the old swing during certain parts of the swing. Breaking the new swing down into segments seems to help the most, using the single plane trainer and ABP trainer. Slow process -- but I love the challenge!

    Great and simple explanation and boy is it working for me in a short period of time. I’m hitting it straighter with at least as much power. Lead foot pointed slightly outward, side bend, trail foot on the ground through impact and just swing the club. And it feels very good. My body likes it. And that’s saying a lot for a 60 year old.

    I've been following Todd for just about a month, and placed my "Old Swing" in the dumpster. LOL 65 yrs young, and hitting balls in my pastures is cheap entertainment.     I like the analogy of cracking a whip. Only when the motion stops abruptly does the speed of the whip’s tip accelerates to break the sound barrier and produce the “crack”!

    I thought I was pretty spot on with my Moe swing. But to be honest. After this "inside" of how the brake works in detail, my swing is getting much better every shot. And I feel that the more I brake the more accurate the ball goes down the line. Thanks Todd.

    Great video Todd. I think most people (without formal instruction) learn to swing from the top down and as a result never learn the proper sequencing from the bottom up!

    I immediately started hitting shots more consistently and straighter with both my Driver and Irons as soon as I started a single plain with my arms, side bending to the right and changing my grip to where it felt stronger and square at impact.
    I had the worst slice to the right with the Driver. The side bend itself seemed to change my swing path coming more from the inside which was the biggest fix of my slice problem. I watched this video before I went to the driving range yesterday. Best performance I’ve ever had on the range.

    I think this teaching could be why I am not consistent with my irons. I keep hitting to the right (right handed). I haven't been putting my lead foot 30 degrees out. Thanks again for the excellent teachings. I am hoping one day soon me and my son can come to one of your clinics.

    Just went out to my practice net to try this have been struggling so much with worrying about positions that that it freed me to just swing even just putting the side bend on my normal swing it correct my attach position thanks for the video do video with a driver please 🙂

    Biggest benefit of this motion right here. The limitations allow the confidence to let the arms accelerate without variables. If I KNOW something is going to be in the same place with the same motion, my only objective then is to maximize the clubhead speed and find the outer limits before additional variables are introduced.

    I'm new to the Single Plane Swing, but most of it is working pretty well. I'm 71 and a 5 hc. My friend is 81 and he tops the ball all the time. Would the wider stance help him to get under the ball a little easier. His narrow stance gets him going more up and down than a linear move. Thank you so much for making the game easier for us former tennis teaching pros to transition to the great game of golf!!

      I'm sorry nobody has replied to your question, let me lend my $0.02 in your question.
      Will a wider stance help your friend's topping issue? Yes.
      There's a caveat though...
      If it's a Single Plane swing that you're thinking about for him then EVERYTHING else has to be taken into consideration.
      - Wide feet.
      - Aligned lead arm and club.
      - Rearward Tilt.
      - Grip.
      This is very simplified but if any of these are out not correct then other issues will arise.
      The Single Plane Swing feels kinda odd to me as I've had a traditional swing for decades but I've recently made a correlation between the SPS and what it was like shooting a Slapshot back when I was playing Hockey.
      I hope this helps and thank you for being a good man and thinking of your friend.

    Hi, I was working on a thought recently about conservation on the ineria momentum. This is the physic concept that explain how ice skater make spinning accélération. I think you now that and I like the way you illustrate it without extra Word. Kudos ! Iike this approach, lower body source of power, upper body source of speed. And to convert power to speed you need to brake! Also this concept of conservation of moment of ineria explain why heavier play generaly generate more speed.. Just because rotating their body, they have more energy to convert to speed. Many thanks!

      How is your "sidebend" in the downswing. This is where the upper body stays back as your lower body moves forward. Are you coming out of sidebend?

    Todd, A good point I think about why progressive “braking” creates extra speed other than just stabilization is that from the transition to the early downswing there exists accelerating rotational mechanisms that help further accelerate those stacked above it- the hips accelerate the torso which accelerates the shoulders/arms unit. However, The consecutive sudden deceleration of those same stacked mechanisms in the same order- left hip to then left torso causes a significant transfer of energy to the rotational mechanism still moving above it. The concept is similar to that of snapping a towel or a whip. Do you agree with this?

    Todd, when you say rotation and limitation, does the right hip do what every it can and that's it? as in conventional golf they want you to make sure the right hip gets "WAY" around> enjoy your videos, thanks!

      I stop the lead hip (lead knee flexed) and move the trail hip as much as I can with trail foot on ground.

    Todd, it’s frustrating that I am flexible enough to keep my trail foot down, stay in right side bend and my lead knee flexed but my lead knee flexes to much to where it will go past my ankle which doesn’t brake me enough to then allow for torso rotation. How can I stop that lead knee from flexing too much ?

    Would you say that more powerful arms and shoulders through muscle growth produces a faster more powerful swing speed than a weaker arm and shoulders. Or is it just speed of movement whether powerful or weaker arms.

      Generally Men hit the ball farther than Women because of upper body strength. So strength is a factor. But it is only one factor. Sequence is also a factor. Stability is also a factor. lever lengths are a factor too.

    Thanks Todd .. but does this put a great deal of pressure on the lower back towards the tailbone? The finish seems out of balance if you swing hard, I do like the ideas of braking though . .. I mean, look at Rory M. Hell, he goes backwards in the middle of his swing.

      The Single Plane Swing, when done correctly, will take pressure off of your back. How does it do this? Simple, when you start and impact on the same plane, your body doesn't have to "back up" and lift like Rory. This reduces compression and shear on the back.

    Todd, the scientific principle that you are so effectively exploiting is Conservation of Angular momentum. When the lower body is stopped by the biokinetic limits the lower body momentum is instantly conveyed to the upper body and arms. The upper body and arms then accommodate the transfer of momentum by accelerating. This is why having the head of the club lagging the hands is so important; it makes sure that the lower body has stopped

    Todd. Fascinating physics of the swing motion in the braking points. So it’s actually a good thing your left hip is prevented from “rotating” before and during impact to reduce variability and improve consistent impact. We’ve all seen pro’s who teach straightening of the left knee to promote more rotation and club head speed. So you’re swing speed is not any slower in fact actually faster ? Because you’ve stabilized lower body and allowed arms to swing through with less variation. I tend to hang my weight back and use “all arms”...I’m hoping your technique will help me. At first it appears counter intuitive but it seems you have as much weight shift and rotation as the other teaching pro’s at impact. I took stills of your video before, during and after impact

      yes. it is a good thing that you "stop" your lead hip. Even the straightening of the lead knee is a "stopping" of the hip. There is always a need to slow down and stabilize the lead side of the body in the downswing. The Single plane swing has the same amount of rotation of the pelvis into impact, the fact is that the trial side of the pelvis can continue to rotate even if the lead side of the pelvis is stopping.

    Right foot on the ground I understand but shouldn’t the right leg straighten to keep the upper body from dropping back?

    Your right foot heel is on the ground at impact but lifts up on your followthru so you finish on your right foot toes. Your master instructor keeps his right heel on the ground throughout his entire swing. Please explain the difference. Thanks.

      You can do both as long as your weight is on your lead knee through impact and into the finish. The Mechanics of the motion through impact are the same.

    My lower back is wrecked. Started playing 17 months ago. My back gave out. Last 2 days could not stand up. In bed watching TH-cam on meds. Local pro lessons, and of course I am high hcp. Looks like your approach is less torque. How do I know or check or feel that I’m not stressing the lower back w this swing? Thank you. I love the game but I’m in a world of pain.

      You have to use the legs correctly to save your back. No straightening the lead leg! Must make sure that you are taking stress off of the pelvis when you turn the body.

    Fantastic Todd Graves video which simplifies the Single Plane Swing sequence and really explains in layman’s terms how the body can create more golf swing speed and become more consistent if this sequence is learned. This video also reenforces the importance of hitting the SPS positions correctly and the importance of practicing correctly. Thank you, Todd, for yet another GREAT Single Plane Swing video lesson.

    Always remember that the faster the hands move laterally though impact :the slower the clubhead will move and the excess speed will just drag the stationary clubhead, without the deceleration force, which will release it!

    Brace position!!?? As a student who you pointed out did not move my rear hip at all im certain now I move it too much and all straighten that rear leg. Will get out the video and keep working as it def is the only way!!

    i don't know why single plane swing isn't widely taught or practiced. Before last week, when I found Todd Graves' videos, I couldn't hit a driver to save my life. I hit the driver slightly longer than a 9 iron. LOL. I started incorporating the techniques and it's much better. I still need to work on the mechanics but I'm ripping through the ball and am hitting much farther.

    I just noticed that the caption about cause and effect is incorrect. It says “ Cause and Affect”. Affect is about feelings or emotions like I am happy. An effect is caused by something.

      Not True. Affect is a verb meaning implication. Effect is a noun meaning result.     Actually, if you look at Mo Norman swing in slo mo you will see that on the downswing Mo. flexes his right knee and with that. he clearly elevates his right heel a little and shifts his pressure to the front of the right foot and off the heel. SO there is some movement. And that movement must be controlled to be repeatable. So stability is not automatic. with he set up.

    Kyle Berkshire lifts his trail foot A LOT prior to impact during his long drive championships, as do other competitors.
    I'm not saying that's best practice for an every day Golf Swing but they're hitting it 400+ yards regularly.

      I'm in search of exactly that, Consistency, which is why I want to thank you for all your contributions to this great and often frustrating game.😁
      I've been learning from your videos and practicing the SPS when I can. I really do feel like progress in the right direction has been made.
      Although I haven't been on a Range or a Course in a few years, I have been doing some practice around my house and in the local parks for the last few months. I'm really looking forward to testing my progress at the Range soon.
      My Wedges and high Irons have really come along well so I'm hoping that will translate across all clubs.

    What you will do with this method, is an over rolling of the wrist through impact and follow through producing hooks, pulls. Another point, many golfers don’t posses enough flexibility in the hips to keep their rear foot on the ground impeding torso rotation. Finally not allowing the rear heel to come up early in the downswing may impede some golfers ability to transfer weight so their low point is ahead of the ball at impact. I like some of the concepts here, but not to the extent you’ve presented.

      @@ToddGravesGolf this method restricts torso rotation for most golfers. I stand by my claims. Your method won’t work for most golfers. Let’s leave it at that. You don’t have intentionally roll your wrists with your method. It will happen with a restricted hip and torso rotation in the follow through.

      @@roberthaar No. This method does not restrict Torso movement. We have 95 total degrees of torso turn in the backswing, 35 degrees (positive) at impact. We have 40 degrees of pelvis turn of the pelvis at the backswing and 30 degrees (positive) of pelvis turn at impact. How exactly do we have less turn than traditional golf swings? Do you know the metrics of golf swings or are you just making assumptions like every other person who doesn't know the facts. Lets see you data that Shows the evidence of your assumptions. I would be happy to show you that the Single Plane Swing does not restrict movement but actually makes the SAME movements with less stress and effort - efficiency. Furthermore, Do you not think after 30 years of teaching the Single Plane Swing that I don't know my method? Interesting how you will makes assumptions as if I just throw theories around like I'm at a golf instruction casino. Laughable.

      Affect is a verb implying “impact” and Effect is a noun implying “result”. Actually cause and affect implies that the cause has an impact - so both of the terms apply to this conversation. Let me give you an example. If you grip the club incorrectly (cause) you to have the face open (affects the face) and you hit the ball to the right (effect). My mother was an English teacher.     Todd Moe’s trail foot always toed after he made contact to his ball: especially when he extended his body out of his golf posture his trail foot had to be lifted and toed for his hips to be free to pivot at the end of his swing. Wouldn’t you agree? If we try to keep the trail foot down to the finish of our swing; the momentum of the club head would surely hurt our hips. At least I know it would most certainly hurt mine at age 73. Cheers

      I believe Todd was talking at impact not follow through. Its obvious mo ended up on his toe after the follow through but was always in contact with the ground at impact.

    The right foot is a lever. This technique is not how real body motion works. As he says, it is limiting to get a result of a square clubface. There are many ways to get a square clubface without the need to hit the breaks in the body.

    My trail foot pushes straight on to toe then I spin out. I didn't use to do this until I started watching all this rotational videos which have screwed me up

    Imagine driving a van with a load on the back, you can accelerate all you want and the load stays still. Hit the brake hard and the load will shoot towards the front with a massive force, CREATED by braking. This is the POWER from nowhere in the golf swing.
