  • How to replace air springs on Mercedes Benz w212 E63 AMG.
    In this video I show you how I go about fixing the infamous leaky air springs (air bags) on my Mercedes Benz E63 AMG.
    The E63 has the Airmatic suspension system, but only for the rear, unlike the E550 and other models. The job isn't too bad to complete. The hardest part I would say is inserting the new air springs into the very tight space you have after removing the old ones. All in all if you are a DIYer you can definitely perform this job and save yourself a ton of money!
    Let me know what you think of the video in the comments below. If you have any experiences or tips you would like to share drop a comment.

    Thank you so much for this tutorial. I just replaced the left rear air spring on my 2011 E350 wagon by watching your video. I had to use a hammer as well to free up the bottom of the original air spring because it was stuck in the bottom of the control arm. One tip that might be useful to others who attempt to change their air spring is the to compress the new air spring and place duct tape at the white plastic tip that is on the brass air line nut so as to prevent it from expanding...it makes the air spring more compact so as to be easier to place into the control arm and the top mount. Thanks again for showing that it is possible for diyers to tackle this job and save tons of money.

    Thanks for the tutorial. I replaced both air springs on my 2014 E350 wagon. Getting the springs in was a challenge, however. I ended up using a small bottle jack between the top of the wheel well and wheel hub to push the wheel hub assembly down. This opened the distance between the top and bottom spring mount and made installation reasonable.
    I tested the original springs for leaks. They were leaking with about 25psi at the steel compression ring holding the rubber to the plastic mount. The original springs had about 110,000 miles and nearly 10 years of life.

    Nice video man! I just did the same job on my W212 Wagon. I opted to loosen the following 3x screws, to make it easier to get the airbag in and out. 1: Lower Shock bolt, 2: Stabilizer Link lower bolt, 3: Rear bolt holding wishbone to subframe. Camber is not adjusted at the rear bolt of the wishbone, so it wasn't a problem removing it and dropping the wishbone an inch or so.
    After doing that, I had plenty of room to get the airbags out and replace with new ones. Once you figure out how to do it, it takes around an hour per side :)

    I took the wheel off and only undid the top drop link bolt.

      @@JerelLorenzo Turns out my "leak" was well within Benz limits, took about a week for the rear to drop completely, and Benz said it's good until it takes less than 3 days. The DIY's are rare because these high mile high dollar Benz's aren't actually that unreliable as everyone would have you believe. $180 bucks to tell you if it's leaking or not is dumb. If you come outside the next day and the car is dropped then it's leaking. If it can hold air for a few days assuming no other circumstances like temperature drops as you mentioned, it's fine. A small leak isn't a big deal anyway, the compressor can keep up with it no problem. If it drops in just hours then at that point it's probably not safe to drive.

    Nice video. I just did this job. I had to do a little more tapping than you did to get them out. I found that spraying wd40 around the bottom of the spring helped to release some of the rust and dust in there that was preventing the spring from coming out. Also, instead of pulling the arm down, I left the white piece in the air connection. I compressed the bag and put a piece of tape over it so it didn’t inflate. Once installed I removed the white tab with the tape and it inflated in the space.

    Just did my CLS550 today. I had my car sitting all the way down when I would come out into the garage. I had my car lowered with lowering links about 2 months ago. Soon after lowering, I noticed the rear would sag all the way down. So, I don't know if I had a bag leak or if lowering the car affected how the bags retained air. Either way, decided to replace the bags and the rear shocks while I was in there. Job is def easier with the shocks out of the way. I didn't have to remove the bolts you had to remove, just the bolt holding the shock in. Your bags came out hella easier though! My were fused into the suspension arm. Literally took me 2 hours to get the passenger side bag out. I couldn't hammer it out so I put a jack under there and raised it while I lowered the car on the other jack. I literally had all the weight of the rear end on the air bag and it still wouldn't pop out. I ended up torching the hell out of it(make sure you watch the flame so you don't burn important stuff). The back split in two with all my torching and beating and prying. I eventually ended up with the "cup" that sits around the base of the bag still stuck in the suspension arm. Some more beating with a hammer and chisel got that out. Lol it's like the factory super glued my air bag into the suspension arm. Outside of that, everything else went smooth. Good job on your video!

    Nice to see that repair is also possible in the garage.
    Please pay attention, watch 12:31 and color marking on the air hose. I think so far you shuld press in the air hose, see 12:42. Connecting the air hose to the air bags 12:42 is not safe without removing the original air spring screw nut. This could be even dangeroues, since it is not safe enough without a thightnig of the air hose in to the air spring screw nut. Please check that because sudden los of pressure by high speed could be very dangerous. Greetings from Germany!

    Just Changed My 2014 CLS550 4matic passenger side today. It was lowering at night in the left resulting in both left and right lowering. I just have a question. Do we need to replace the air sensor as well if the issue continued and how we know the air sensor is damaged or leaking?

    • @DriveTalkCars
      @DriveTalkCars  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The air sensor is to determine the level of the car or how much air to add or take away to make the car "leveled". If there are no leaks present then it could be your sensor. But I would say if the air springs inflate and then deflate over time then it is a leak somewhere. Also, you may get a Air Suspension Malfunction error message on dashboard. If issue continues then the leak could be from the valve block. This is where the air lines connect. Good luck!

However, i did have some difficulty in getting my new Arnott air bag to fit into the opening. I also accomplished the replacement by myself and I did not have the tools recommended to make the opening wider. So I compressed the air bag and i used tape on 2 sides, securing it on the left and right sides of the airbag; to keep it compressed and was able to get it into the fitting area and adjust the seating, then removed the tape. I noticed, you did not use Mercedes Benz brand air bags, and I can only find Arnott rebuilt. Your video is two years old so your car has been running with those for a while. How are the Arnott bags doing for you, any trouble with those?

      Thank you for watching and leave comment.
      From my research, Arnott is the go-to aftermarket brand for the air springs/bags. Some say they are better than OEM. I haven’t had any issues with them since I have installed them.

    Stupid Question...
    why you did not need to extend the spring for removal but had to do it for the installation ?
    is there a diff in height form the new and the old one?
    btw thanks for the tutorial ;)

    • @DriveTalkCars
      @DriveTalkCars  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The air springs are relatively the same size and height. (if there is any difference in size). On the driver side, the shock compressed after removing the air spring and required more space to install new one. Same thing on the passenger side, except I didn't have enough room so I had to remove bolts on lower control and other components to make more room.
      Thanks again for leaving comment and checking out the channel!

    I have a 2010 E63 AMG like yours and after the few snow storms, the rear went down. For me though im getting a malfunction error on the dash after starting the car and the car doesnt rise up. I do hear the compressor how ever for maybe 10 - 20 seconds befor eseeing this message. Would this be a bad air spring as well or is this a bigger issue? EDIT: Checked with star system and got code C156C00 (System 'Compressed Air distribution' is leaky). Checked the lines leading to the air spring but didnt notice any leaks.

      Leaks can always be a tough thing to track down… One thing that comes to mind is maybe the valve block in the truck is leaking.

      Sorry, it isn’t in the trunk but under the trunk. It’s on the drivers side close to the exhaust tip. It has a black cover over it. You should see white air lines running to it.
