  • In this episode, we discuss what Overlanding means, I show you how a VHF two way radio is fitted, and I talk GPS and electronics? I also show what I use the useful side box/pannier for.

    Another great video, really enjoying the channel.
    Modern day 4x4's, no matter the brand, are more than capable of overlanding in a 'modern Africa' with absolutely zero modification. Just load the basics in the boot or even in a decent little Venter trailer and you're good to go (pretty much anywhere). Spend the money saved, on beer and the odd running repair along the way.
    Modern day vehicles are incredibly reliable and trustworthy.
    The whole point is just get out there and enjoy!

    As noted earlier, a refreshing view of how much kit you don’t really need. It’s so easy to get caught up in all the hype of needing this or that. Take a hike and wild camp in the hills to understand what really matters. Why? Because you are carrying it. Take the same kit for overlanding but with a comfy bed 😊

      Absolutely although we do do our “5 star” bush trips and take the trailer, but when I am alone I don’t need all the fancy stuff.

    What a refreshing video! So good to hear real world examples and to see vehicles other than a Toyota Land Cruiser doing the business. It often frustrates me that there seems to be the opinion that technology is evil in vehicles when over landing. In the not too distant future, we won’t be able to buy petrol or diesel vehicles but that does not mean over landing ceases to exist. Who knows, perhaps Landrover and the plug in ev and all their technology will be ahead of the game 👍 great videos. Keep it up !

    Hi Bruce, agree with the comments that overlanding is about the journey and from when you are packed and leaving on your trip. When i was a student in the late 80’s i was fortunate to have like minded friends who had bakkies as i only had a bicycle 😃. One of our best trips was 3 chaps going to the swamps in a Ford Bantam each with a rucksack 2 tents and one 3 legged pot (pot was mine and still use it). We had to go off the 2 spoor road due to the thick sand on our way to where we left the car and walked further as well as commandeering a poller to take us right into the swamps. So the new Landy will definitely be a good overland vehicle and especially when one gets a little rounder with age, taking turns in the back of the bakkie without a canopy is a bit harder on the bod. I also grew up in a family who had old Landy series 2’s with which we went camping/fishing to S/Moz and N/coast kzn when one could still drive on the beach and reach amazing spots on our coastline. In those days not every second car was a 4x4 which could take one to some of the fantastic spots we have in southern africa, The new 4x4’s are so capable whether a bakkie or a SUV, however you have to often do long distances on normal roads (which are also not so normal, due to potholes) in order to get to places where there are not too many people and you can enjoy nature, and other hobbies. Enjoying the series, thanks a lot, cheers ian

      Dont feel alone, but it was those rough trips that make one appreciate being able to do the trips with better and more kit,….. just must not get lazy and keep on making time to go to overland places 😎🍺

    Just found your channel Bruce and what a great channel and I really enjoy the “say it like it is” attitude that you have.
    Your explanation on “what overlanding is” was the best explanation that I have personally ever heard.
    I just bought a Ford Everest 4x4 to take us to more remote and further places (also started creating videos for TH-cam) , and had a bit of doubts that we would not be able to go everywhere we want because we do not have all the gadgets that these “big overlanders” have on their vehicle. But what you said about your parents using their car with 7 people in to explore Southern Africa hit the nail on the head. It is not about what you have, it is about enjoying the journey and making great memories.
    Well done, loving your videos, busy binging all of them so I cannot wait for the new one in the Kruger😁

    Half the fun of ‘overlanding’ (my definition: I’m going camping in the game reserve or National Park in my car) is preparation and buying stuff you will probably not use (I do anyway). Over landing differs from 4x4 course enthusiast requirements as serious obstacles tend to be avoided if possible in remote areas by OLs’ . There’s no reason the new Defender can’t be used for over landing as with most bakkies and other vehicles in the market. Rightly so you stated comfort is king 👍 My wife’s new Defender over lands a lot to Woolworths and my Puma to Botswana and each kitted out and fit for purpose.

    • @OverlandingwithBruce
      @OverlandingwithBruce  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      100% agree. Pumas and OD’s are not great for going to Woolies 😂The Old defenders are next level when hitting the dirt, carrying weight and living out of, but I am looking very forward to a proper overland trip with this ND. The transkalahari for example, is going to be a bit different with cruise control, silence and climate control :)
      We doing a short weekend trip to test our new setup in Jan and then will be doing a proper trip to Zimbabwe at the end of Feb. Will document it and do a comparison.

    Overlanding to me is going off the beaten track, and doing it in a 4x4 can save you from a muddy patch. 4x4 gives me the confidence to go where city vehicles cannot go.

    • @OverlandingwithBruce
      @OverlandingwithBruce  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t think there is a specific mould to fill to enable someone to use the term Overlanding to discribe their type of travel and it means different things to different people. I think Overlanding entails, travel, exploring and being self sustainable and using any form of vehicle, to achieve that.

    I agree with most, except over here in Australia LR has possible the worst reputation for reliability (both on road and offroad) everything that could go wrong often does, dealers and spares are few and far between, and the post sale attitude of LR leaves owners gutted.

    Another great video. Like what you did with the radio, it looks very neat. On a similar note re the wiring, I was wondering what to do to avoid having to use the lighter plug-in for a dash cam - I try to avoid those wires where possible. Ended up buying a pre-spliced loom (from PowerfulUK) which attaches very neatly inside the overhead lighting unit. No splicing required, simple plug in to existing connections. I may look at something similar for the radio.

      Thank you Grant. Please let me know if you find something like that. The other option I was thinking about was wiring it to the jump start terminals in the engine compartment but I’m happy where it is now. It makes it very easy to remove if I need to.

    Hi Bruce. Nice video and well done. How is the car treating you so far. I've watched your trips with Ryan, Ed Bath and Christof and realized that your tyres still look stock. Did you have any challenges during any of your trips in as far as the rims and tyres are concerned. In the one video, you and Ryan were climbing a really steep and rocky hill. Are the wheels treating you well so far and are you planning to change them?

      Hi Kagisho.
      I have had no problems at all. In fact on the Zim trip Ryan had the bad luck of damaging a BF Goodrich mud terrain tyre and my standard tyres were perfectly fine. Sometimes its more about luck than type or brand.
      I have since changed to 18inch AT tyres but I am still unsure and may go back to the standard wheels.
