  • What happens when you ignore the serve rules of table tennis?
    The service rule in table tennis is not clear.
    It makes many confused for both players and umpire.

    To be fair, judges are in a terrible position to really be able to tell if a toss if vertical, if the ball drops behind the head hiding it. If the receiver can see the point of contact. To really determine that, they'd more likely have to be behind the table vs way off to the side.

    These rules should be enforced, that's what I've always thought. It's supposed to be a very nearly straight up toss, and if there's anything about it that even puts a little doubt in the official's mind, he's supposed to call it a fault. That's how I learned it.

    sadly, illegal serves have become the norm. table tennis has allowed players to ignore the spirit of the rules by straddling the line btwn legal and illegal serves too liberally. this is NOT on the umpires. what IS on the majority of umpires, is not doing their jobs, because its too hard, and the hardship is the result of the federations blind eye to this issue.

    1. Ma Long's serve is almost always illegal due to hiding the ball behind the head. While it sounds like the umpire is faulting this serve from the height, it appears from the full clip that it is the angle that is the issue (as for clip 2). There are some players who lift the ball (pretending to throw it up) and essentially just let it drop - this is illegal and would have been a better illustration.
    2. I agree with the commentator that Such's throw-up is within the usual tolerance and it is notable that Gardos also thinks so. It is an area where the regulations should imho be clarified. There are many serves where the horizontal distance covered is much larger than for this one but are not called as faults.
    3. Very difficult for us to tell from this angle whether Steger's backhand serves were over the table or not. He does appear to throw the toss backwards so it could well be that he presented the ball over the table.
    4. The umpire is 100% correct on these serves - the ball clearly falls behind Steger's head. It would be great if more umpires were willing to call these serves as faults. It is simple cheating. Saying that it is not possible to make a table tennis serve without hiding it behind the head is just ridiculous.
    5. This is clearly an illegal serve, both because the toss is >45% away from vertical and because the contact point is hidden behind the body.
    6. Amateur match - this comparison is just silly.

      I'm sure Ma Long never hides the ball by his head when he touches it, it's impossible to do so. The one called fault was hidden on the way drop but shown to his opponent when he hits it, so it's not a big deal. Also if this specific rule be widely applied, I'm sure more than half of nowadays players serve illegally all the time.

    Wrt. the first clip, that umpire was terrible. There were multiple points during the match where she didn't understand what had happened on the table but didn't let that stop her from yelling incoherently at the players, including one episode where she berated and then carded Maze for not serving quickly enough when he was waiting for Ma Long to get back to the table! By the end of the match, Michael Maze and Ma Long would just stare at each other in confusion trying to figure out what to do whenever the umpire made another mistake. It's a shame, because both of them played really well and it was otherwise an excellent match.

  • @jcjensenllc

    The commentators are wrong. Rules are rules! The toss has to be VERTICAL to the floor. Up is NOT VERTICAL! Vertical means 90 degrees +-10 relative to the floor, not 45 degrees. The reason for the rule... spin can be induced during a non vertical toss, it is harder for receiver to watch/see the ball, the ball is traveling faster the a vertical toss.

I think thrown up at least 10 inches, no hiding of the ball at any time. The toss must be ruffly vertical.The serving hand immediately dropped away. One warning, then points there after.

    If you are a very mean umpire. Then Samsonovs serves is just 98% correct. You can see in the first split of miliseconds that his thumb is covering the ball.
    The rule says, that the ball has to be seen at everypoint of second without a bodypart cover the serve.
    But it would be more than ridicolous if some umpire or player call this serve fault. :D

  • @volotile8301
    @volotile8301 ปีที่แล้ว

    It is very obvious that these umpires have never played before. It is extremely common to toss the ball at an angle so that it is in a better position to hit it at, allowing the player to hit more serve variations. The vertical toss rule was to ensure that players do not toss the ball behind their body to hide the serve, but in this series of clips all of the serves are very clearly shown and not hidden. So these serves are every much fair and do not give the player an unfair advantage. In other words this umpire has no idea what he is doing.

      Das sind alles Profis, die garantiert nichts an unbewussten Bewegungen in ihren lange antrainierten Aufschlägen haben. Und die wissen ganz genau, dass sie den Ball zu sich hin werfen, mit Kopf oder Schulter den Balltreffpunkt verdecken oder wie hoch sie den Ball werfen. Ich finde es gut, wenn die Schiris da intensiver gegen vorgehen, nur sollten es alle auch scharf machen. Dann hätten sich so manche „Marotten“ schnell erledigt…

    • @nenek5533668
      @nenek5533668 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, you don't have to cross serve on singles matches. The umpire called it fault because the throw was not vertical, and the ball was dropping behind the server's head. Similar to the one at 3:06.

    • @wfberkhof
      @wfberkhof 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Doesn't have to be 100% straight, but close to straight. Most serves you see are thrown into the body 30-40% and they should all be faulted.

    • @RatatRatR
      @RatatRatR 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Everyone understands that you can't throw it perfectly straight up. The rule calls for it to be very nearly straight up. There's a clear difference between that and throwing it toward your body.

    When the service rules are unable to be followed by the MAJORITY of the players,even among the pros,to me they need a closer look and reevaluation. Surely the pros themselves try their best to abide by the rules,in practice and in matches but even they commonly make fault serves. Only one logical conclusion follows,which are the rules being too difficult to follow in its entirety. In my humble opinion,the requirement of tossing the ball up 15 cm is already enough,without being too strict on the verticality aspect of the toss(not easy to totally make it totally vertical due to table tennis ball being so light as opposed to say a tennis ball) and whether the body/head partially obstructs the ball. Rules that can't be followed by the majority brings into question the viability of the rules itself.
