This song (and album) is the soundtrack to my junior year in high school. It was 2005 and I was 16. I had just started working at a grocery store. I remember being blown away by the intensity and the balls-to-the wall vocals and performance of this video. Somehow extremely emotional and soaringly beautiful, and almost too much for me to handle on my first listen. My intrigue brought me back, and the album became one of the first purchases I made with my own money. One day I came home to my mom reorganizing my closet. My extremely conservative parents ended up finding my CD collection while it was still in its infancy (maybe 8 or 9 albums max), combed through the lyric sheets, and threw away everything except an instrumental Joe Satriani album. The only other album that survived was this one, Deftones Self-titled, because it was in my CD player in the car. The case and lyric sheet was thrown away with the rest. Even though at this point it's scratched up and barely plays, I regard this album as a trophy from my teenage years...a win for creativity and expression in a very sheltered upbringing.

Damn bro it’s crazy to see chi taking a picture of the crowd he looked happier than anyone in that building. And then one day he’s gone. It’s so sad what happened to him but I’m so grateful to this band for staying together and putting amazing music out all these years later. They are seriously special for that.
I was fortunate enough to be there that day, and was in the video ever so briefly... I was wearing a Far band shirt that day, which the Deftones band members really appreciated, and thus approach me about it. If you are a Deftones fan, you will know why they appreciated seeing someone support their friends in the band Far. Anyways, Chi was in fact in a great mood that day! He was so happy and friendly and chill. I’m glad I got to meet him, and he is sorely missed! We are all so grateful that the band carried on indeed, for what a staggering amount of amazing music they have continued to create since Chi’s passing. To be honest with you… I think that this is only possible to happen when it isn’t a front man vocalist that dies in a band. If you think about it, what would Nirvana be without Kurt Cobain? And even though I’m not that big of a Lincoln Park fan, what would their band be without Chester? Stone Temple Pilots without Scott Weiland? Mother Love Bone without Andy? Alice in Chains without Layne?? I could go on… The bands that tried to continue without the original lead singer simply weren’t given a fuck about anymore, because when a singer is so mind blowingly good and was such a huge part in creating the very sound/character of a band, it always seems to go terribly when they are replaced. The replacements NEVER remotely hold a candle to the original, and they will always constantly be compared and contrast did and not respected because they aren’t original sounding - they are trying to copy what someone else sounded like. As much as I love the musicians so much and Deftones, I honestly don’t think that they would have been able to continue with such a successful following if it was Chino that died instead. Many musicians can copy what other musicians wrote in a band as far as instruments (or be good enough to create music for new albums), but there is just no replacing vocalists without completely destroying the sound of the band or watering it down to an extreme extent.

I'm somewhat in that situation currently. Something about this song has made me feel sad , pissed off , and super confident at the same time. I struggle with bullshit anxiety that I want to get rid of so badly. I'm very uncomfortable in my own skin I can't even walk outside withount feeling awful. I don't know what it is , I have no reason for it , nobody has ever said anything about me or my looks in person , other than nice things. I wanna start skating so bad but I can't even walk outside. I have so much anger built up from this bs and it's affected my life for the past 4 years negatively. I'm literally 14 , no friends , scared of imaginary shit that's never happend before and never will, I don't take care of myself , I stare at a screen all day, I hate it. But I'm starting to get there , im finally feeling like doing something about it , I need to get out of my comfort zone and ignore every bad thought because in the long run it will help so much. I should just blast this song on my headphones and skate for miles. I'm so sick of it. Anybody who says anything about me won't truly effect me in any way that matters , so why am I afraid of it so bad? 8 billion people on a giant rock moving through a mind numbing amount of endless space, and I'm worried about what? I have one life and one life only, so why am I wasting my time being afraid of nothing?
Holy crap. And here it finally is. I have been quietly searching for this song for nearly 11 years. I first heard this on headbangers ball in 2007-2008 when i snuck out of bed and was watching it with the volume on level 2 and sitting about 5 cms away from the TV. I used to sit there with a pen and pad a write down all of the good songs i would hear. I will never forget rushing to find a pen and missing the Title and Artist of this song by only a few seconds. I also found ill nino that night!! This has made my day :)
i heard this on headbanger's ball when i was 17 and i was hooked to deftones and anything like this. i was into metal then death metal then later any noise music i could find
One of the great bands that didn’t need fucking auto-tune, like all of the trash that is out these days! I miss this era of music so bloody much. Everything was so much more raw, and that is why a producer wouldn’t have even thought about making Chino re-record this without his vocals breaking up mid-scream. Everything was so much more authentic years ago in music.

I don't know what it is, but this music video has always been so incredible to me. It just matches the song so perfectly, but it's not like anything special is really happening... it's just them performing. But something about it is just so perfect to me. My favorite music video from them.
This is the most intense and heaviest song of the band.... Just mind boggling and out of this world!! Screams are visceral and shakes the demons out of you, bone crunching, soul numbing stuff! Nuff said...
I remember reading somewhere Chino explaining this album is the toughest for him to revisit and play certain songs from it live because it was just a really rough time for the band. And regarding this track specifically he mentioned that this track is just pure dread. When coming up with the guitar riff, Stephen came up with what I believe the perfect representation of dread. It just sounds like giving up. Hard to explain
Chino's voice has always been a mystery to me. How has he not destroyed his voice for all these years, screaming like mad then hitting these incredible falsettos immediately after
This is hands down my favorite video from them, simply because of watching this drummer. This Is a prime example of how simple does not mean less. And I love how absolutely bassey and sharp all his drums sound
True story. They opened up for the summer sanitarium concert in Orlando around 2004-05. I was lucky enough to help out my uncle who was a vendor so I got in free. I was so excited because I was going to see Linkin Park and Metallica, Limp Biskit, too. These fucking guys came on to open the concert with Hexagram and my mind exploded. Never heard something so fucking hard and beautiful at the same time….which is what their music is. Show stopping. Their set killed all the others.
I never was into Deftones. One day I bought the Deftones- Deftones CD because it was low-priced and I knew and liked Minerva. At home I put it in my stereo and Hexagram started....I was totally blown away. '...And the camera makes you seasick!!!!!!' Sick lyrics and a riff that smacks you in the face. Long story short; Deftones forever.
Deftones are such an absolutely amazing band. Almost every album is unique and high quality work. This is one of my favorites from them, you can hear every ounce of emotion in Chino’s screams/vocals

THANK YOU DEFTONES FOR EXISTING!
This has made my day :)
i borrowed the headbangers ball CD that had this song on it from a friend of mine and the screams blew me away
I love this song, the scream around 1:36 always gets me bro. It’s one of the only ways I can feel the awful emotions I have leave my body
thast the Scream!!! oh yeah baby!
the screams give me the chills
One of the great American vocalists. Chino Moreno, I salute you.
1:44 Tool shirt - nut grab
fahq8484 nut grab😂?
Lol wtf? xD
He was grabbing his tool...
I wanna smoke what you smoke 😮💨
why anyone says this is deftones worst album is beyond me.
IMO Saturday night wrist is the worst, for me it's the only Deftones album that's not absolutely epic.
totally agree. Still a sick album though.
thembluetube That just shows how amazing Deftones is. Their "worst album" is still awesome as hell.
KocuRisko That's my fav album haha. Diamond Eyes is my least favorite.
It's a Love/Hate thing
one of the best deftones songs of all time
Lol....I'm in that crowd somewhere. Man- childhood was fun.
I don't know why, but this song makes me feel like I'm saying goodbye to someone and never seeing them again.
Man the raw emotion at 1:38 just made Deftones legit one of my favorite bands ever
i heard this on headbanger's ball when i was 17 and i was hooked to deftones and anything like this. i was into metal then death metal then later any noise music i could find
I love the break in his vocals, sooo good!

Do you have reading comprehension issues or something? Or did you forget to finish writing your comment?
@@anti-ethniccleansing465 Do you need to shit on something else in order to enjoy what you like? Or could you try being a normal person?

99% of music today deserves to be shit on. We will never get better music if we don’t express our hatred for it. Lol at you taking my comment personally or some shit, like you’re offended by my factual comment. 🙄
There’s nothing “un-normal” about what I wrote.
Man deftones is something else 😊. Pure joy 😊😊😊😊😊
1:37, 2:44 those screams are unreal.
Modimus Prime agreed
Yep. I'm from San Jose.
Still just as impressive.
Unfortunately it's unhinged screams like those that most likely have resulted in his shot voice now :/ kinda worth it though, IMO
i think this song is only screams
Yep. And they've never been the see sense, in my opinion. But he still sounds great today. Chino went ridiculously hard on the self-titled.
Such a dark song yet so inspiring...
Everytime I listen to this I always feel better
WOW me too:)
rock on. just home from the hospital after a few months. my sister broke in and robbed all my clothes, computers, cds, phones, and smashed my car windows in. now i'm being evicted after about eight years since she destroyed my home and smoked it up. it's sad. i'll be homeless soon but i wont give up my service pup and my cat and birds. they're all i have... and my music.
thanks for keeping me alive. i love you.
why would anyone do something like that?
I'm so very sorry to hear that..:( I hope everything ends up how you hope for!
I hope things turned around
Right!, Keep your @@fingerscrossed2453
As above. Hope you're still listening.
My tattoo artist started my 6 hour session with this album blasting in his shop, hell yeah!
filmed August 8,2003 @ SkateLab in Simi Valley,CA. I had the pleasure of drinking with Chi.
+THEUNHINGEDSANITY u lucky son of a bitch
u were drinking with chino ? that's bad ass
Toma pang no, he drunk with Chi Cheng, the band's bassist who died two years ago or three i can't remember
Oh lucky
One love for Chi. man. :(
So many memories of this band throughout my life. Their feeling and depth and emotion really goes beyond any band I've ever known. They are my favorite band and they always will be.

They don't have a single bad album.

@@explodingegg123 ohms is pretty decent idk about gore tho heard it’s shit
this album honestly has no skips and is arguably their best
the fact some people call it their “worst album” is pretty crazy to me
God I would've loved to have been there.
Drew Thomas I know someone who was in this vid...said Chino was an absolute D*ck....but I suppose he has earned the right to be...
James Gabe Chino is literally Jesus dude I don't believe that
Believe it, it's true...
James Gabe am gonna pretend i never read this lol
James Gabe Airbug11 He was the lead vocalist of one of the most well known bands of the genre, even to this day. Not hard to believe he was an asshole.
why is this the first song on the album? I listened to it at least a million times before i could advance to track 2.
tiffstarshining I don't care at all for the rest of this album...
R.I.P Chi Cheng 4:04
ASSANTE SOUTHERLAND dude that killed me 😯
I think it's sweet of you
+matt borriello and you parents are proud
I don't know what it is, but this music video has always been so incredible to me. It just matches the song so perfectly, but it's not like anything special is really happening... it's just them performing. But something about it is just so perfect to me. My favorite music video from them.
Best band to ever grace earth! Proud to have found these 15 years ago 🌍🕊️👽
Who's here waiting on the new 2024 album it's ☀️ let's get it
I love the guy taking the picture with the disposable camera.
Lee Roth yes, that is rad.
The guy is Chi!! rip
@@Thholyghstt it´s Chi
Those were the days
i love him too... we all do... ⭐️
2:55 so awesome. Abe is a great drummer. Love Deftones!
Deftones is a gift to humanity
I remember this album giving me a sense of nostalgia since I was a kid, and I never knew why.
Anyone else just get goosebumps everytime u hear that gut wrenching high squeal ?
Those screams are actually kind of terrifying.
when i first heard this song on a mix CD i thought he wrecked his vocal cords to bits
@@patrickgrondines6781 he did before he recorded Hexagram
@@michaelotis223 right
Chino just screams his lungs out on this tune! So heavy!
my mom thought he screams like a dying animal in this song
Chino's voice has always been a mystery to me. How has he not destroyed his voice for all these years, screaming like mad then hitting these incredible falsettos immediately after
He has destroyed his vocal chords
Yeah he definitely did like 20 years ago, interestingly though this was after his injury
He did.
Recovered, and got professional training after.
@@miserirkenthis song is actually after he got training
Shut up jdwoods
Their best album in my opinion.
Couldn't agree more!
RIP Chi. What a personality
the scream at 3:50 is wickedly & insanely emotional. Simply amazing
My dad is in this he is in the deft ones shirt behind on of the guitar players and one time they let him hold the mic and sang together
You just described everyone at the video shoot.......
Cool!
Stephan cuz
Best band ever, best song ever.
Hexagram will probably always be in my top 5 Deftones tracks of all time.

@betomarin3067 it's just a small joke. Calm down
I literally come close to crying every time I hear these guys. Amazing is an understatement.
Straight chilling...
I remember blasting this in my Pontiac gtx and making my ears ring after I listened to this at full volume all night.
This is hands down my favorite video from them, simply because of watching this drummer. This Is a prime example of how simple does not mean less. And I love how absolutely bassey and sharp all his drums sound
Abe is the pocket master
Love their self titled record as much as all their other releases.
2:44 chino’s scream is so fucking raw and potent. goosebumps- every time.
Happiest and most powerful deftones song...
Their set killed all the others.
fav song hands down love love the energy yes!!! this band gets me through love them so much!!!!
Love seeing Chi Cheng rock it out!!!
Death is the standard breach for a complex prize
I never was into Deftones. One day I bought the Deftones- Deftones CD because it was low-priced and I knew and liked Minerva. At home I put it in my stereo and Hexagram started....I was totally blown away. '...And the camera makes you seasick!!!!!!' Sick lyrics and a riff that smacks you in the face. Long story short; Deftones forever.
Chino's voice is insanely talented!!

Deftones are such an absolutely amazing band. Almost every album is unique and high quality work. This is one of my favorites from them, you can hear every ounce of emotion in Chino’s screams/vocals
Beating them drums like they stole something 🤣🤣🤣 the energy in this video was crazy. I could only imagine being there.🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
simply a work of art
Ive been a fan of deftones sìnce their early days and i honestly believe this was one of their crowning points in their career. When i bought this album it was on repeat for over 2 weeks. R.I.P Chi Cheng you will never be forgotten.
I know, rose coloured glasses and all, but how good were the early 2000s?!
Not one of these kids with a smartphone, nobody needing to validate their existence by posting to instagram, they're just taking it all in and enjoying the beauty of the moment.
This is so amazing. There truly is beauty in pain if you can see it that way.
Why does this song ALWAYS give me chills?!🤘🏾 Thank you Deftones🖤🖤🖤
Same here
Such an incredible song
shoutout to the guy wearing the Tool shirt.
ippo tsk it absolutely is. I wore a limp bizkit shirt to a deftones concert this year
yup exactly, i saw deftones and rise against this year and i saw a chevelle shirt, an enter shikari shirt, a tool shirt, an underoath shirt, and a few others, but no deftones or rise against shirts
+Squeezed Weiner (The_Moisturizer) I Saw them in July of this year too. Chino came out into the pit and hold his hand as he sang Knife Party.
I'm glad my dad showed me Deftones!! They are beyond amazing!
Deftones forever!!
Im showing my son what songs and bands i grew with
