Happy to see someone demo the realistic limitations of this tool. TH-cam videos too often show Adobe-friendly demos with perfect results. For my money, I’d rather see Adobe rewriting their software to optimize for modern hardware rather than incrementally improving these gimmicky features.
Yes, this feature helps a lot. As anything in this world, we can't just give a task to a robot or an AI that ambiguous. This technology still need human intelligence to do exactly what we want flawlessly. 1st, by giving an exact command, in this case is by providing a good selection to begin with. 2nd, by providing a relevant data to sample. Photoshop is only giving you some more option to help you. And that's pretty cool and useful. We can't just expect an instant 1 click of a button to fix every case. In the end of the day, user's understanding, preference workflow is still the key to achieve the best result. some case are just better and faster to do it with manual clone stamp tool, some case are just better and faster to use healing or spot healing, and even using brush. This feature is not meant to replace the old tools, it's just another option. To me, this is progress is still a great step to the right direction. Of course there are still rooms for improvement, but so far this is pretty darn amazing. Anyway, thank you Aaron and Phlearn for always providing a great photoshop content. Have a nice day :)
The old ways are still the best. With these new automated tools you usually spend more time figuring out how to refine and improve it than if you'd just dived in and done it manually. And c'mon, making selections isn't exactly the hardest job in the world anyway.
I think when you combine it with the AI powered object selection tool (or preciser manual lasso selections), you can get great results with this. If you treat it like the old content aware fill with the old selection tools available you're not using it to your full potential. Love to see more videos about these new 2020 features.
Congrats for your video, but a huge question here: how to apply Content Aware Fill in 16-bit? I mean, I knew that any active selection reduces the bit-depth to 8-bit. So, is there a way to use Content Aware Fill without selecting an active area? Thanks in advance.
A good frank tutorial ..........you shared your frustrations ........I'm unsure if these "improvements" will stand the test of time. .......... a good straightforward tutorial!
Ha. I hadn't even noticed they updated that tool. I'll probably use it now. If it can do 90% of the work on a messy shot, and all I need is a little brush work here and there, then I'm all for it.
I think it is great to have more tools than less. It's just like carpentry tools, you don't have to use all your tools all the time but every once in a while that unique job comes up where that one particular tool does the job better and easier. Even if the tool doesn't do a perfect job 100% of the time it could still get you a long way toward your objective leaving only a small amount of tweaking. Plus, there is not an add-on fee for the tool so why not have it available? Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Aaron.
Thanks for your great tuturial. I tried doing it and ended with the area being replaced as “foggy” or sort of transparent. How do I adjust the opacity?
How do we know how much extra space around object to be replaced, to include in our initial selection? I notice you include a relatively generous amount...Thanks!
Great feature! That preview dialogue box isn't popping up for me after selecting content aware scale in the edit menu. I get a box around my selection.
Appreciate your candor in showing strengths and limitations of the updated tool. I use it more than the prior version and see improvements. With more complex backgrounds, making several smaller selections seems to help. Some clone and healing needed to complete the job.
Played with it tonight (my Google searches probably led to your video being suggested) but ended up using clone stamp. Maybe give it another try after watching this. Thanks.
Actually I just noticed you do not have an APPLY button. I take it this was this added later. Currently watching video end of May 2020. Seems to be a learning curve. I selected first area , duplicate layer then apply to stay in dialogue box. Use losso (tool top right corner ) to select new area with current layer. Edit is merged on the now duplicate layer. Auto selects new collection area around it , but custom needs to have any previous collection area removed and repainted if not suitable. Yes thanks for a real tutorial. Not sure how much I'll use this as I tend to be a healing brush tool / clone stamp tool user.
Heh, I agree with there being still significant limitations to this tool - but this video made me feel like you could have gotten better results by refining your selection from within the tool, by fading/expanding/reducing it. But I also agree with the others here saying that it's great you're showing things as they are, and not making it look like black magic like some other TH-camrs! On a personal note, ever since I learned how to better use the clone stamp I actually use these automatic tools way less than I used to, but I still think they're exceptionally effective when used with a bit of patience!
I am sure I am the odd man out, but, it was nice to see a pro like you have problems with PS. So often the video works like magic and my life was more like your video today! Thank you!
Thanks for the vid. I did not even realize the new tool was there as I had just been right clicking my selections and hitting fill, and then selecting content aware. The new options are interesting, will have to play with them a bit.
Hey PHLEARN I never stop searching for you on youtube and finally I have found you. Thank you very much for taking me through great tutorials in 2017 and am happy to tell you that I have also use the approaches and am starting my youtube channel. I never thought I will get there.
I used to use content aware every day. The new one 2020 just is NOT working for me. I keep on getting an error message that says, "Could not fill because there are not enough source pixel on the selected layer." Any ideas? When I click on ok, it closes the content aware window, so I cannot even use the custom tool or the rectangle or auto. It closes down and kicks me out. UGHhhhhhhh
Glad adobe is leaning towards A.I. software and they need to refine it better like other software.. I love the clone stamp tool and I also love saving time in my workflow.
Great demonstration, all the better for being ‘real’ and showing it not quite working. The techniques you used to work around this were just as informative. Thanks
Aaron, honestly I really enjoy learning with you, your tutorial was great. Especially when your debuting new subject matter, I find that your very thorough in presenting key information in the short time you have. Due to Covid-19 my wife and I have been staying inside spring cleaning, taking care of much needed upgrades I'm almost caught up, going forward I'll been spending a portion of my free time trying to improve on my photoshop skills. It's nice to know that you guy's do what you do, please take good care of yourselves and stay safe, thank you for sharing this information.
I liked the video overall. Towards the end you kind of shut us all out when you brought in the new layer and then stopped teaching. I would have liked to understand what you did on the new layers.
I love that they are taking the steps utilising AI for those tasks that no one wants to do too often. Even though the results aren't close to perfect just yet. Also, I wouldn't mind if Adobe adds an option to send image and selection data to their servers (without personal information), so it actually turns into a data set the AI can learn from. (It just needs to be easy to turn off again when working on top-secret client projects. 🤫)
I continue to wonder about the integrity of content removal (and cloning, for that matter). What shots can we clean up, and what should we leave alone?
As with most tool "upgrades' Adobe manage to over complicate whereas the tool was fine in it's more primitive state. There are plenty of other ways to do the same job. Don't think I'll be using this much!
I cant even brush with the new photoshop. It gets all weird and stops. I have a pretty good computer but it just cant handle it. Photoshop keeps getting bigger but they need to stop making it so big that my goof computer cant handel it anymore. Its annoying and I can not work properly. Not even that good of an update
It f-ed up the horizon line. I am a little disappointed - the old fill-in was doing a pretty good job as well and it's pretty old in terms of in-painting technology.
It looks like you phoned this review in. You didn't seem to use it correctly or in a way a real pro would do. You should have made those cutouts tighter. Spend an extra 10 second getting a better cutout instead of fiddling with other options.
This is not AI. AI is when the computer figures out how to do something by itself, this is just an algorithm coded by a human to do something a 3 year old could do, so its not THAT intelligent either.
No improvement at all in regards to the AI Adobe Sense except for the custom button. We expect more from Adobe sense like what Skylum did in Luminar 4 AI Enhancement and AI sky replacement. Unfortunately, Adobe lately becomes more money oriented rather than creativity oriented.
I see no reason/value for that large video of yourself? You're hogging valuable screen real estate.Your demonstrations are much smaller than they could be. I'm not sure why you think we need to see you at all? When you show the layers panel. You are literately devoting over 25% of the screen to You.......from left to right. I want to see the examples/what you're doing. Not you drawing on your pad.I can't learn a thing watching you work at your desk. The layers panel could be easily reduced by around 80%. Without the layers panel, you still hog almost 25% of the screen from left to right. I like your content, I've been away for a while.I find this newer "look at me" format as overkill, without value.
Great to see a Pro struggle with some of the tools. Thanks for an honest tutorial!
Happy to see someone demo the realistic limitations of this tool. TH-cam videos too often show Adobe-friendly demos with perfect results. For my money, I’d rather see Adobe rewriting their software to optimize for modern hardware rather than incrementally improving these gimmicky features.
I love your tutorials!!!!!!!
It’s a test, guys, not a tutorial. He tested and showed us the weaknesses of the tool.
Pretty hard to see this as an improvement on the previous version...

super clean super clear LOVE IT ❤️❤️

I'm not sure if any of this is new in mac. But this functions are all on PS last version on windows.
Congrats for your video, but a huge question here: how to apply Content Aware Fill in 16-bit? I mean, I knew that any active selection reduces the bit-depth to 8-bit. So, is there a way to use Content Aware Fill without selecting an active area? Thanks in advance.
A good frank tutorial ..........you shared your frustrations ........I'm unsure if these "improvements" will stand the test of time. .......... a good straightforward tutorial!
super helpful and real thanks!
The closer you can lasso your target area, then the closer your sampling area can be, which usually makes for a better result
Ha. I hadn't even noticed they updated that tool. I'll probably use it now. If it can do 90% of the work on a messy shot, and all I need is a little brush work here and there, then I'm all for it.
Great and professional, as always
Very helpful. Thank you for sharing the issues that you had. VERY Helpful

Thank you, very much! Very nice feature!

Thank you! This helped so much, xoxo

Thanks for taking the time to show us this! This helped me as a beginner to photoshop

Complicating a previously simple process. I guess it will become simple again with practice. Thanks for sharing.

Now this is a vast improvement of this tool!
I am happy for the upgrade but my beaten paths will take some time to widen.
I'm using a mouse with this feature and it appears way blotchy. Is this because I'm not using a pressure sensitive stylus?
I am sure I am the odd man out, but, it was nice to see a pro like you have problems with PS. So often the video works like magic and my life was more like your video today! Thank you!

I do not understand how splashes were moved 10:57. If someone got it could you please explain.

Can this same concept be applied in Affinity Photo?
nice tutorial from victor! hello brother come on lets get this project done bro
Plz do a video on How to make low key images in photoshop
I used to use content aware every day. The new one 2020 just is NOT working for me. Adobe keep up the good work , everyday photoshop keeps getting better and most of all thank you Aron
Glad adobe is leaning towards A.I. software and they need to refine it better like other software.. I love the clone stamp tool and I also love saving time in my workflow.
good video I have this program and like it a lot thank you for your video it was very helpful

How to watch Phlearn videos:
Step 1: like the video
Step 2: then watch the video
I like it, with reservations.
Horizon on the second one is still pretty bad Aaron... ;-)
I liked the video overall. Towards the end you kind of shut us all out when you brought in the new layer and then stopped teaching. I would have liked to understand what you did on the new layers.
Great video, Aaron. Nice to see you struggle just a bit, like the rest of us. But I totall Phlearned stuff!
In another timeline you just made a power outage in a small coastal village!
I love that they are taking the steps utilising AI for those tasks that no one wants to do too often. Even though the results aren't close to perfect just yet.

TY, it will improve
The simple image is an image from my country, Greenland! *_*
Hey Aaron, can you add a feather to the content-aware selection? That might help take away the harsh edges. Great video
Within the dialogue box the lasso tool now has all the options normally available including feather.
OMG THANK YOU! I'm cc on Sims 4 and they put bunnys on everything :D
GooD Job
thank you
always love it when it works and despise it when it fails and I have to spend time getting it right the old way. Guess i am just a bit lazy?
Nothing wrong with the old clone brush. Doesn't seem much of an improvement to me.
thnx dude
excellent!
thank you :)
Ah, yes, brother
Perfect!!!!!
Thanks from Iraq
thanks
Would be easier to just clone stamp that surfing image
Is better but not perfect, with some help from others tools after is fine.Nice tut as always.
it is awesome
I continue to wonder about the integrity of content removal (and cloning, for that matter). What shots can we clean up, and what should we leave alone?
I can't do it ? Why is that
good video

Great Kermit the frog impression
Same or similar function to Healing Brush tool and Clone stamp
It will be a significantly life-prolonging experience if only Adobe gets chosen to put the "A.I." into Boston Dynamics Robots.
Good demo except when you suddenly leaped to "color range" and completely lost me.
It f-ed up the horizon line. I am a little disappointed - the old fill-in was doing a pretty good job as well and it's pretty old in terms of in-painting technology.
Thank you Sir.
It is very good Video for me.
Didn't know Tony Stark is using Photoshop
I like the tool and I like using AI. AI can be continually updated and improved.
I HATE power & phone lines, utility poles, etc.
You are adorable, Aaron. Not in a I think you're cute kinda way, just an I wanna smoosh your cheeks kinda way 🤭🤣
Is it really necessary to introduce yourself in each and every video for all those years again and again?
It looks like you phoned this review in. You didn't seem to use it correctly or in a way a real pro would do. You should have made those cutouts tighter. Spend an extra 10 second getting a better cutout instead of fiddling with other options.

This is the least useful update imo

This text is not fully content aware
I hate this now!!!!! Its soooooo much more work. It does a horrible job even when you choose areas to use.
This new version really sucks!! Too over and too complicated makes it become more stupid than before!!

Well, Obviously its nice video. But try to make it short as possible without. I think you can made this video 6 or 7 minutes. I just my opinion.
“it is fine, not bad, but it could be better....” that’s is what you saying all the time about photoshop :D just say it, photoshop sucks :D
