Absolutely loved this. I spent my first 16 years in Devonport. Many kids explored those tunnels (unsupervised!) during the 60s and 70s. Legend has it, that some of them have seen live ammunition in there and that it has since been sealed off. I only took a few steps into those tunnels but got scared and ran home instead. My Dad used to take me to that library every Thursday night. It was very modern for those times. The wharf is a LOT different now than it was then. It used to be an old corrugated iron structure with concrete floor and it echoed with all the voices and footsteps of rushing workers. I had my first kiss at Devonport beach (can't say I enjoyed it very much because I didn't really fancy the poor boy). Thank you for taking me back to my old stamping ground. So many memories.
Great channel, guys👍I am planning a longer trip to NZ this winter and therefore this channel is a great source for me. I like the rather unedited style of your videos giving a very authentic impression of how walking around is over there. I wish this channel to grow much more. Best regards from Cologne, Germany
So pleased you went to see Devonport! I used to live there, right on the waterfront of Cheltenham Beach. That side is the better side, overlooking Rangitoto rather than the city! Thrilled they've opened up the area by the carpark: it was also a mushroom farm 🍄🟫 at one stage. You have made me want to take a day trip back there... ❤
Maungauika (north head) and takarunga (mount victoria) were pa sites (maori villages/defensive settlement) which were settled around 800years ago which had strategic defensive positioning for incoming ships into the harbor
Have only found yas recently on here. It’s been a privilege seeing our beautiful country through your eyes. I will binge your NZ episodes now 😊. Have the best time on your next adventures in a new land! Us kiwis will miss your tiki-touring vids of our home. Kia ora 👋
Holly Moses as a Kiwi I’m a little shame, I’m not being aware of the military defence Fortress in Devonport, thank you Mado and Glen for reminding me of the proud history we have in Devonport Auckland,🎉
It's been 40 years since I've been home,, I played and discovered with friends a hidden tunnel, we un covered it by moving a ton of rocks , , long stairwells to the beach...wow thanks for the memory.😊
What have you got Mado, a vegan burger, what sort of meats in your vegan burger, oh, I dunno, chicken lol ... love it ... oh by the way, you forgot to mention its supposed to be winter ... looking forward to seeing some of your Aussie stuff as well, and the AB's play England tomorrow night as well 🤞🤞
The Devonport defences are awesome to see. There is gun emplacements all over new Zealand. There some great ones around Oamaru and timaru as well. Although not to the same level as Devonport. Also its kiwifruit not kiwi.
@@GlenAndMado I was a regular there for about 10 yrs. It's Wellesley St. CBD, live music, good atmosphere. I enjoyed meeting many people from Ireland (my mothers homeland) and from all over the world. Young people travelling, etc, it's a good place to meet fellow travellers and NZers.
Lmao not you both talking like Devonport is an independent town when it's literally a suburb of Auckland, y'all cities in Ireland must be small alright 😂😂
We used to go up the mountain as kids with cardboard boxes, then slide down the hilly parts overlooking Rangitoto.
That you for all your wonderful videos over 10 month showcasing New Zealand so well, good luck on all your future travels we will miss you.
Totally agree it has been great following you both around New Zealand,,,,, safe travels
Yep,there's just so much to see in our beautiful NEW ZEALAND
Your so right Rob, such an amazing place. your very lucky to live there!
Glad you like Devonport, it’s a lovely unique place to live, with great people.
Aotearoa is diverse. The people, lifestyles and the scenery. We have it all

What a great clip. So glad you had an excellent day to spend on one of your farewells. Devonport looks an idyllic place to live.
And very expensive
One of the wealthiest suburbs
@@robertbaird4822 All NZ cities expensive
Good on you Glen and Maddo! Thanks for sharing your adventures in NZ, Goodluck in the future!
North Head is great - one of the truly unique places to visit and live

thats pretty amazing that we can give you a flash back of the past :)
I used to wag school at North Head 😁
At 7.03 you can see the last volcano in Auckland (Rangitoto) that erupted just 600 years ago. You would have had a great view from that spot.
Army camp still in 1962! Did not know that. That would be a good posting. I know this area well, fossil trees on the beach too
☀️ 🇳🇿

Awesome vid guys.
Fantastic views.
Big Respect to the guys who manned those defences, back in the, not too distant past 🕊

Mado has those maori place names sorted.
Well done.
Hey bro as a kid growing up I was told there was ammo an guns buried in that hill and they sealed them off in those tunnels

You two are mmm , lost for words but been watching your work, all I can say is Awesome.
Tom no need for words, your support means enough to us ❤️
8:43 well yes it is called the "City of Sails" for a reason. Auckland has one of, if not the, highest boat ownership per capita in the world.
You guys should come to Papakura it is a wonderful town to visit
Did you go to the Auckland museum and the wintergardens at the same place?
💖
Oh no, you missed the best part of north head, the staircase tunnel down to the beach
I think you had a Steinburger or 2 Maddo.😜
Welcome, welcome, welcome and stop in at Father Teds Irish Pub in the city. But the best parts of NZ are away from the city
father teds pubs??? haha love the name.

Why don't you two come back and live in NZ, start a family and become kiwi's.
Best place to bring up a family I reckon.
We feel its a good place to retire but at the moment we want to continue travelling :)
If you believe in ghosts, there are stories of strange things happening in those tunnels.👻
Got caught skipping schhol here when I was 16😂
Is New Zealand (Auckland) actually safe for an Individual for work?
Absolutely! Feels safer than London that's for sure! Devon port is very expensive, you need to be very wealthy to live there.
Bad things happen everywhere, but Auckland is generally a safe place.
Lmao not you both talking like Devonport is an independent town when it's literally a suburb of Auckland, y'all cities in Ireland must be small alright 😂😂
I mean we pre much the same as ireland population wise but I think nz is about 3x larger than ireland land wise so I guess that's why
The Russians Neve were coming ...
hahaha yeah it definitely worked out that way in the end.
i don’t believe it , , it’s definitely Germany
🤔🙄🤪
Im glad you showed that place because I live in Auckland - have never been there and now I dont want to go there. Thanks.
