they might not be that rich in money, but they rich in culture and community these areas. i realised this after I migrated to NZ from sri lanka. lived in otara for a bit. compared to other parts of auckland, sure the crime rate might be high (i dont think its high now as it used to be) ....but there is unity and resilience in the community..the cultural vibrancy is refreshing, and people who look out for each other and got their neighbour's backs, the volunteering and youth developments and the civic engagement of these support networks and preservation of traditions...is something unique to remember and be positive about. thanks for showing the good side of Otara..which is like 95% of it
This is one of my favourite episodes of your travel in NZ! Thank you for taking us along on your journey! I hope you are going to the Cook Islands but all other Pacific islands are also beautiful! Enjoy your last day in our beautiful Aotearoa and hope to see you back one day! You are such a beautiful couple! God Bless ❤️🙏
@@GlenAndMado That’s awesome! Both beautiful island nations! Will always be following you two and when you do come back to NZ, we will put up a big feed for you 😁 Take good care 💕🙏
Wel, this made my day watching this, born and raised but not living in the area but family still live in the area, love it. Thank you for showing this to the world!!
If i had known the exact date you guys were coming to Otara I would've let the whanau cook a feed for you.. I hope next time. Its nice of you to give me a glimpse into my home town, good old tincity, thank you guys so much.

Loved watching you chat with the locals everywhere you go. Great video and some lovely people in Otara. "You're world famous in New Zealand" as the saying goes.
You have to try the Taro guys, its really nice, but it has to be prepped and cooked by Island people that have been cooking and eating it for all of their lives ... it can be eaten hot or cold as well, plenty of salt and white pepper ... yummm
Nice to see you guys visit my hometown. I’ve been here since birth, 26 years, and like you’ve said there are bad people everywhere but personally I’ve never run into any or seen any here. I believe Otara’s bad rep is from pre-Y2K but bad things may of course happen every now and then. I use to walk down here all the time with my primary school and college friends to stop off at the bakeries or library and I never felt unsafe as an Asian passing person. My mum and a lot of family members are white and they’ve never had a bad experience and my mum often goes here weekly for cheaper groceries. Definitely sad you guys couldn’t catch the Saturday market, I have a lot of fond childhood memories of waking up early Saturday morning and walking down to the market with my grandpa to buy fresh produce and food from the stalls, it was always a great vibe and I looked forward to it every week.
I've lived in all the areas of south Auckland and otara you meeting the most loving people in these areas i am new zealand maori lived here my whole life thanks for showing me the south island can't wait to travel the whole of south island I've traveled most the north island

I hope you are enjoying your last night in NZ. I'm a local and went to school here, even when it was supposed to be really bad in the old days I had no trouble. I have enjoyed all your episodes. Hiere Ra.
Thank you for reminding me why Otara is a beautiful place, it's the people! I appreciate you using your platform to shine the light on our community. You'll always be welcome here 😁
I used to live in Auckland, and my visits to the Ōtara market were a highlight. The people were the friendliest, kindest folks you could imagine. Well done for going and talking to the local people, very cool video.
What's it like here compared to the cook islands " there's more coconuts here than in all the islands put together, thought I was escaping from those eggs.
Always respect Scottish and Irish people. From the struggle to. I hope you guys had a blast in SA. I believe that little uso that he makes the kele pua’a 😂
Otara is lovely if you mind your business like any other suburb, it has one of the most popular weekly markets in Aotearoa which attracts people from all over Auckland and the locals are down to earth and will help you if you need a hand. I feel more threatened in Ponsonby with all the stuck up snobs everywhere and there was a shooting death in Ponsonby's main street recently
But are there any pies in Otara? And I am going to miss you two showing us around NZ - have to watch you in other countries too to see what you are up to🌏
I have always loved the Irish and to have you both promote Otara, and what our people are actually doing in comparison to the story and narrative our government wants people to believe is a wonderful and humbling kindness we so desperately seek. Thank you both from the bottom of my heart. May the lord bless the path before you both and keep you safe for all your journeys 🙏❤❤❤
Otara born and bred, during my early teen years I worked in the gardens at Korkiri Te Rahuitanga Ki Otara back in the 80's ❤ Best Saturday markets ever! Roxy's and Yogi's video games arcades! OMAC! 34:26 the store behind you used to be a toy shop / bike & skateboard shop and there also used to be a brick constructed public toilets where the trees are now back in the 80's.
Ōtara is a beautiful place, Polynesian people by nature are very friendly. You can walk around all day and nobody will harm or attack you. You experienced that yourself. NZ perceived worst area is paradise compared to other cities in the world. I do hope that both of you are well, where ever you are now. Lovely couple, you even said Kia Ora.
Otara or any district in New Zealand is not belong to a certain race . Coloured people in this country call most white people racists when they behaving in and out of political ask for coloured ppl only is racist . NZ is all races not just islanders ! Auckland is a European name RECOGNISE! 😊
It was a safe and happy place to settle in to back in the days . So I remember could walk anywhere without hassle. Going to discos movie night at the Otara hall centre. Now it's none of that these days. Now 64 . Now I don't need to visit anymore. Thanks for sharing 😊

I'm from the South Island of NZ and visited the Otara markets 25 years ago. I got more than a few sideways glances from the locals lol probably more due to the fact that I was sporting a mohawk and wearing steel cap Doc Martens boots. First interaction I had was with a guy trying to sell me drugs 🤣 Loved it though. I managed to pick up a few bargins then tucked into some delicious island cuisine - Chop Sui, Taro and Palusami 👌 So good!
Wow that’s some special memories you had in Otara, it’s definitely an incredible place full of great people! We already miss it a lot, and don’t get me started about the food! Your totally right with that 😋😋
Bro can't believe he got that amount of panikeke (pancakes) for a dollar 🥞👀) lolz.. Man, I was going to comment you should've stopped in at Evelinas if you just walked past it, but you actually went in.. Nice island food there.. 🏝 I wish they had one around Mt. Albert/New Lynn/Avondale.
Otara is a great place and holds alot of culture. Its the very few gangs that make it feel as though it is dangerous due to the types of crime they commit. It's really a minority group, however. It's ironic that you can hear a Police helicopter chase around when he speaks to the guy basking. 😅 Hope yous enjoyed NZ in general. Its a mixed bag of cookies. 😁
It’s not a misconception you just haven’t seen what really goes down lol that area is run by gangs , if you don’t involve yourself and keep to yourself , you won’t have any trouble.
